This place is so very beautiful! The land surrounding it is breath taking. Inside the building is gorgeous. Rich wood, state of the art design. Their wine was delicious! Really impressive "one off" Zin. The two different Cabs we tasted were great. I love it when we get to taste superior wine, such a treat! Then if all the above was not wonderful enough. O'Shaughnessy now has the very best sommelier! DaMarcus is friendly, welcoming & so knowledgeable regarding everything wine in our Napa/Sonoma Valley, all while totally taking care of business. This was a private party for wine club members. We had never heard of this winery, but our friends, who are serious oenophiles, are wine club members here. We met Betty O'Shaughnessy, the founder and owner of the winery. She was so gracious and welcoming, with no affectation. The winery is high up on Howell mountain, above the Silverado Trail. The grounds are stunning and the winery is beautifully built of Sonoran stone. There is a cave that was bored into the mountain, where wines can age. We also met the winemaker, Sean, who has been with the winery since it's inception. He studied oenology at Fresno State--who knew there is a wine program there? The wines were wonderful. I only tasted the Mt Vedeer cab, the Howell mountain cab and the Chardonnay. I really enjoyed the two cabs. The Mt. Vedeer seemed more austere but was very smooth. The Howell Mountain had more fruit notes and seemed like it could age well. The Chardonnay was my least favorite--I described it as "bright" maybe because of its multiple fruit notes. The food served was really excellent, including a cheese board, filet mignon Philly cheese steaks, lamb sliders, caviar, oysters on the half shell, and Chinese style duck breast wraps. The staff was super friendly and concerned with our feedback. Excellent wine and food in a spectacular mountaintop setting, off the beaten track. read more

Going out of our way to visit this winery is something I now regret. Granted, this was the tasting that followed Pine Ridge and lunch at Auberge. It's incredibly hard to compete with those two experiences. In a nutshell, the winery and tasting room are on Howell Mountain and quite the drive from Yountville. Not surprisingly, the beautiful building is used for special events. The grounds and architecture are right out of a magazine. A long row of rosemary in bloom greeted us as we drove up. Initially, I was grateful they were able to fit our group in on short notice, given they came highly recommended. Rare for us, but in the spirit of full disclosure, we did run about fifteen minutes behind. I called to ask if that would be OK, and was told it would be. Great! We were immediately greeted and then given the beyond abbreviated version of the "tour." Basically it went like this: Put your stuff down. Let's walk through here. Walk through there. Here are the tanks. Here are the barrels. Here's the owner's private collection of wines. Let's drink some wine. Twenty minutes later, we sipped, and left. The hostess, while charismatic, had somewhere to go. I get it. It was a Saturday. Things to do. We called. We were late. Perhaps it would have been great to mention (when I called) that we would get a fuller experience on another date and time and offered the choice or known going in. As we gathered our things and took photos outside, we saw her lock up and rush to her car. Got it. In the end, (and to make things worse) the wines we did sip weren't too memorable. Four wines (a sauvignon blanc, a chardonnay, and two cabs) placed on a piece of paper (with the descriptions) with a pen next to it, overlooking the lush grounds, on a high top (no chairs, we stood). Perhaps we'd have to try an older vintage or spend a little more time there allowing the newer ones to open up? I guess I'll never know. Not planning a return visit. On to the next one. read more

We had the best tasting today with Bob, who is our new friend, He is an absolute rockstar...the world needs more fun people like Bob. Of course the wine is ridiculous and fabulous. We loved everything and I just want everyone to know that if you want to end up at O'Shaughnessy -- you have to WANT it. It is a bit tricky to get to but you will not regret it. I visited O'Shaughnessy after sampling some of their wines at a tasting event during the Napa Valley Film Festival. I was impressed with their Cabernet and booked an appointment. It was fairly easy to get a tasting appointment. I e-mailed and got a return call within a day. I felt like the person on the other end of the line was sort of interviewing me to see if I was serious about wine. I'm not a fan of wineries that seem to be "testing" you to decide if you're worthy to come in for a visit, but I totally got that vibe. I obviously passed the test because we were all set up for a 10 am visit. The winery is spectacular. The views are gorgeous as it's located at a high elevation. The drive takes a while to get to, so make sure you allow extra travel time. And bring your camera, it's really beautiful! We were warmly greeted and invited into the tasting lounge. I was surprised that this wasn't a seated tasting and instead, we were standing at a sleek and modern tasting bar / table. We were told to leave our bags in the tasting room and to follow along for a brief and private tour of the caves and the lovely cellar (make sure you ask to see the owner's private wine collection, there are some cool bottles in there)! There wasn't much to the tour (which is fine with me), and it mostly just felt like a bragging session about how rich the owners are. The wines were all very good, their quality reflected in their price points. The best wines were in the low triple digits. We tried two whites and two reds and signed up for their Wine Club so we'd get our tasting fees waived. The club isn't a huge commitment and since it included wines we were going to purchase anyway, it made financial sense. We've since dropped the club, however. This is worth a visit if you are a big cab lover. I really enjoy the wines here, and the views are amazing. read more

Great experience with my tasting appointment at O'Shaughnessy! We had a greek goddess as our host. Well, it was halloween weekend...thx Sawyer! :) On the tasting menu that day was the 2012 Oakville Sauv Blanc, 2010 Howell Mountain Cab, 2010 Mount Veeder Cab and a special barrel tasting of a merlot. Beautiful property. Great views from the parking lot and from the main entrance to the winery. Equally stunning tasting room and wine cellar with quite a collection (I've never seen so many bottles of Araujo in one place! Tasting room is at a standing table. Very tricky (but not impossible) to find. Follow the directions that they send you when making the appointment. This is one of those places that is a little out of the way but completely worth the effort to get here. You will not be disappointed! read more

Went with a friend, former co worker, at a local winery to get a first hand look at this location we had heard such great things about. Having made a appt. almost 6 weeks in advance, we were really looking forward to getting some firsthand information to share with other wine lovers and peers in the business. All I have to say is order the wine on line. Being born in the southern US, I have to say hospitality is not something the staff was capable of delivering. Would not recommend anyone visiting unless they wanna be grilled about their credentials and treated like poop. read more

Visited this winery on my recent trip to Napa. Figured it was a nice stop since I love the wines (cabs) and it's off the beaten path. Actually you can't find it on any wine map and visits are by appointment only ($25 per + tour) so no worries about too many people - very private. Anyway, I made the reservation a week in advance. A winery point of contact was responsive, even provided lunch recommendations. Needless to say I was excited. Well, the visit was very disappointing. The best way to explain it is...host was not engaged at all. It seemed like "a job" to her and she wanted to be anywhere else but talking to us and handling the tasting. It was 45 minutes of small talk. And although we paid for the tasting and tour, she asked if we still wanted to do the tour after the tasting was over. I couldn't see her fingers, but I bet they were crossed hoping we said no. Anyway, the wines were good, but to me part of the experience is the host. In this case It was lacking. Considering how many good wineries in Napa, look somewhere else. read more

O'Shaughnessy is a boutique vineyard tucked away on Howell Mountain. It's not easily accessible, and the instructions are a bit hilarious (e.g. stay right after passing the big tree and water tank) because there aren't named streets -- but the instructions are clear. In fact, we drove up here on a foggy and drizzly afternoon and still made it safely (in a Toyota Matrix nonetheless!) We absolutely loved our experience and tour. Let's be clear -- if you're looking for a large, boisterous, bachelor(ette) party place, this is not it. This isn't a place where you run around sampling 7 different wines. O'Shaughnessy captures the essence of the cabernet grape grown above the fog line -- and it's so wonderful to enjoy select wines (my favorite is the Mt. Veeder cab) above the din of the party buses and nonsense on the valley floor. read more

Beautiful location and some of the best wines that you will ever have the pleasure of drinking! Taste and tour is by appointment only. The trip up Howell Mountain is very interesting. You need to pay close attention to their directions and follow them to the letter. The tasting room and facility are beautiful and the experience is very personalized. The barrel room and cave are stunning! Their wine making process is unique. Sawyer our host was nice, but took a little time to warm up to. Sean the wine maker is a SUPER NICE man and took at least 10-15 minutes to sit and talk with us! Well worth the trip....and the wines simply speak for themselves. Perhaps one of the most elusive wine reservations to pin down but well worth the advanced reservation! For a red wine lover, their Pinot was unique and memorable and their Cabs were to die for. Ended up going home with quite a few of their signature Howell Mountain Cabs. Maggie was the ideal host who was incredibly attentive to our needs and entertained us with the ingenuity of O'Shaughnessy's winemaker and the scandalous history of Napa's stolen Bordeaux varietals. I've been to this winery a handful of times and absolutely love it. I noticed many people reviewed this place as having a difficult way of finding it or weird directions, which isn't the case at all. They give specific directions that get you exactly where you need to be. Plus the drive in is so beautiful and scenic, I guarantee if you appreciate nature you'll love it. Consider that it's like a mini adventure into the woods, to one of the most stunning views you'll taste wine at in the valley. The next best thing here is the staff. They've always made me feel welcomed and helped me enjoy the experience even more. Their hospitality has me coming back time and time again. The wine is amazing too and I can't walk away without a few bottles. Don't sleep on O'Shaughnessy, it's the best hidden gem in Napa Valley!!!! read more

There is simply nowhere else in the Valley that combines exceptional wines, warm and welcoming hospitality, and a beautiful setting. We visited O'Shaughnessy estate winery this week. Beautiful property and nice caves and wine cellar. I would say for the price $50/pp and the limited pours there are better places to visit. The tasting fee is high relative to the wine quality and punitive amount of bottles must be purchased to get the fee waived. Wine club requires too many bottles as well. Maggie was a good hostess but not as knowledgeable as most winery staff. Never asked if you wanted to re-visit a wine etc. I would have to recommend passing from visiting this winery, although it's beautiful, due to the value proposition. read more

This was my fourth visit. Usually, I walk away with at least a case. Was very underwhelmed with our guide along with the product. Asking if they had anything off the menu to taste and getting a no was surprising. Then being told another tour was coming, we needed to move along was not good. While they're plenty of places to visit in the area, this would not be one of them I would seek out again very soon. read more

The setting, with the Amphitheater Vineyard atop Howell Mtn, is stunning. The cab and cab blend continue to get absolutely top reviews.
