Date of Visit: 8/6/2023 Highly recommend the Spring Mountain Vineyard in Saint Helena! We visited on Sunday afternoon and our hose Jacob warmly welcomed us with a splash of 2022 Sauvignon Blanc. He took the time to bring us into the cave, pass the stainless steel and French Oak Tanks, and explore the cave with a tasting of the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon with candles on the side. We also walked to the Victorian building "Falcon Crest" House for a side by side tasting of 2004 Elivette and 2015 Elivette. I personally love 2015 Elivette on the nose and 2004 Elivette on the palate. I took my little cousin who just turned 22 to this beautiful winery. I read that it was one of the better experiences in Napa from Reddit. We booked a 3pm tour on Monday & there were only 3 of us in our group so very intimate. I love our wine host (Can't remember the name though)!! Came for a wine tasting with our friends, who are members. I would say this is a pretty hidden and not well known winery. But it's a gem and super cute and have pretty good wines. They have a gate at the front but you just let them know that you have a reservation and the name and they'll buzz you in. We were greeted by Jacob, who had our first wines ready for us. He lead us to our outdoor area - which had 4 large patio chairs, a few wine barrels acting as tables, and a personalized menu/price list of what wines were trying today. The scenery was gorgeous and our view was of the vineyards and the mountain. It was a super nice day and our area was covered by large umbrellas to protect us from the sun. We did the Cottage tasting, which was 4 wines - 1 white and 3 red. We never felt rushed even though I think the tastings had a time limit. They do not allow dogs though - FYI. Even though it was all outdoors. Jacob was super nice and informative. And we had a grand old time here. We left with a few bottles of their sauvignon blanc. Incredible property with an awesome tour and tasting! Our guide was awesome (sorry, forgot her name!), she was very knowledgeable about the history of the property and the wines. Wines were lovely, this place has a lot older vintages than most you'll find in napa, we tasted many from the 2000s-2010s, and one all the way back to 1992! Tastings took place in a historic mansion which is apparently also the set of a famous tv show from the 80s. It would be worth coming here just for the landscaping. It's absolutely beautiful and I saw dozens of plants I could not even begin to identify. When you check in at the little house, you're not really sure what to expect, and it seems a little underwhelming. But a short, easy walk a few meters up and you'll see what you're really there for: a one of a kind experience, it a beautifully restored old estate, full of stained glass and hard wood, stories and legends and rumors. After a brief look around, we were led to a large dining room with a massive table. In our tasting there were a total of 10 of us in four different groups. We all loved our tasting, which afforded us the chance to try several wines, and two vintages of the same wine for comparison, which was fun. We also had a blind taste of what turned out to be an old wine that was just about at it's perfect point. I was surprised and impressed they poured that for us. Our host was funny and affable, and after he got some of his more practiced bits out of the way, he relaxed into our group and seemed more natural and relaxed. My brother and his husband are members, so we left with some more wonderful wines to try soon. Don't miss this breathtaking winery if you can swing it. read more

The wine educator, Ish, who originally hails from Puerto Rico and has the "hot blood and personality" of his culture put on a lively presentation. He took us around the grounds and we visited the estate home that has many stories to tell. One of them was how over 40 years ago while the house was closed up and no one residing in it, the local kids would sneak in and roller skate on those beautiful floors. He even hinted who those kids were and now are known personalities in the NSV. I visited Spring Mountain Winery many, many years ago and happened to be there when the current owner, Jacqui Safra, was on the property. While Jacqui did not say very much at that time, I learned from the staff ( they were not set up for tastings at that time) the many stories about Jacqui and how he accumulated the acreage over the years as he focused on the various micro climates (it was an incredible story and one I better not share as it was very personal.) But Jacqui, being ranked as one of the 50 wealthiest people in the world (Donald Trump does not come close) bought the vineyard and estate in 1992. There were three well known wineries on the property and he acquired them all farming over 200 acres and the remaining 600 odd acres was left as a natural setting. They use cover crops and not pesticides and everything about their techniques are sustainable. MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TIME SPENT WAS THIS LATEST VISIT DID NOT INCLUDE THE WALK THROUGH THE VARIOUS SLOPED VINEYARDS, the micro climates and A BUT MORE ABOUT JACQUI. Why? Based upon my accumulated experience visiting here "back in the day" (and this is why I knocked one star off the rating) there is so much more than just tasting the wine. While the story about Jacqui is interesting, during my first visit back in the 90's, it was related to me that the winery was bought to demonstrate the amazing finished product that can come from the Spring Mountain area and its many microclimates. The caves that are within the hills that have been enhanced are incredible and "back in the day" I caught a glimpse of all of the Premier Grand Cru and Grand Cru wines stored on site as Jacqui loves Bordeaux region from what I was told, such as Pauillac and Sf. Emilion varieties. I am mentioning this as the Spring Mountain wines were not sold for many years and were just laid down and aged after the property was acquired. I believe Jacqui wanted to assess how the Spring Mountain wines would perform over time and once the team confirmed what they had, they started to release it. It must be great to not have to worry about cash flow but now the wines are elegant and to be enjoyed each vintage. The terroir gives an amazing variety of grapes due to the landscape, terraced vineyards, microclimates and the winemaking team. If it were my call, I would push for.more of a visit to the vineyards and explore the land and what God has provided as it is impeccable. I believe Jacqui acquired Spring Mountain as thought these grapes could provide more of an old World finish which is what I think he sought. Spring Mountain Winery produces 25% of the total grape volume of the Spring Mountain AVA. The estate and vineyards start at 400' and go to the top are 1,600'. Couple that with the microclimates, terroir shifts, temp changes, soil changes/ wow, the winemaker has an amazing arsenal to work from. The tasting room is beautiful within the original estate that was done over several years ago. The Chardonnay had a good oak balance, the traditional cab can be laid down for several years due to what the winemaker has done searching the various blocks, and the 2012 Elivette Cab just blew me out of the water; it was very nice for our wine educator , Ish, to offer that. Tasting that alone was worth the trip. On the drive up Spring Mountain Road about 0.5 miles before you reach Spring mountain Winery, there are some cool photos op places/ a waterfall on the right, and some great photo ops on the left of the vineyards and the mustard plant ; as each year towards the end of winter, the vineyards scream color below the bare vineyard trunks!!!! They come alive with gold, yellow and orange; it is mesmerizing. Worth a stop. But I wish the tour included a suggestion to "bring your mudders when you come" as you are going out to the vineyards as part of the tour. Spring Mountain is amazing, the story of Spring Mountain Winery and what Jacqui has done is terrific, and finish it off with the Elivette cab. Then stroll through the property one last time before you leave with many memories. read more

Tracy is the Tasting Room managers who makes it very special for her guests and is very knowledgeable about Spring Mountain and the area in general. Located in beautiful St. Helena on Spring Mountain Road, I would have never known about this lovely winery if it wasn't for my Yelp friends Dennis T and his wife Gabby! Thanks so much you guyss!! We went as a group for their Wine tasting "September Wine Pick-up". When I walked up to this event I was totally speechless! We walked up to a table of lovely workers who welcomed and greeted us and handed us our wine cups with the listing of all the wines that will be available to taste. Although we weren't able to go inside at all we were able to explore their outside and see the beautiful scenery. Our tasting was under the shade of their olive trees surrounded by the vineyard. We had a selection of delicious wine. We had the delighted pleasure of tasting the following selections of wine: ~2013 Chardonnay ~2012 Elivette ~2011 Pinot Noir ~2006 Estate Cabernet ~2004 Estate Cabernet My favorite was the 2013 Chardonnay. I'm a white wine type of chick and all I kept thinking about when tasting this lovely wine was how nice this bottle will go with all my dinners that I make! HA! All the wines were really good! I personally haven't had Cabernet older than 2006 so this was definitely a treat! All the workers were very knowledgeable and new TONS of information about their wines! There was also food that was catered to us by Oak Avenue catering! The hospitality that they provided was stellar! I couldn't ask for anything better. I was greeted by everyone making the food! Did I mention the pizza was made FRESH! Yes, FRESH! They even had Fresh Wood Oven Pizza on-site! Some of the toppings were even from Spring Mountain such as: Basil and the mission figs. How neat! The crew and I were able to walk around in beautiful 90 degree weather and even check out the little farm that they have in the back! I even was able to take pictures near the grapes that were growing! I was in awe at how beautiful and gorgeous this winery was! Thank you to all the amazing workers for having my group and I experience such an amazing event! I truly had a great time and still look forward to coming back for their wine tasting! I really want to love this place, but I just don't enjoy their wine at all. It gets a 3/5 from me, but I can totally understand if this is a 5-star spot for others. More details below: Grounds: 5/5 - Absolutely beautiful location. The gardens are lovely, you can get close up to some of the vineyard plots. There's shade for hot weather. Staff: 4/5 - In two trips I had one wonderful and one mediocre host. The good one was funny, gracious, and left us with gifts from the garden. The other was brusque and kept things as short and impersonal as possible. Wine: 2/5 - This one is personal, so take it with a grain of salt. When I'm in Napa, I'm looking for bright, fruit-forward, full-body, etc. Napa's specialties are the wines which are ready to drink without much aging. Spring Mountain's approach is to age their wines a great deal. This mellows the flavor a lot. To my taste, the wines drop the wonderful and unique characteristics that I look for in Napa. If you hated most of the reds in Napa as being too tannic or fruity, then maybe Spring Mountain is for you. For me, the wines are dull and weak. read more

I found this place prior to our trip to Napa when we were looking for new wineries to visit. I was intrigued by this one because it got great reviews and was by appointment only, so I figured it would be less crowded. I went online about a week before to make a reservation for the following Saturday for midday. We drove up the narrow road to the winery and arrived at the gate. We pressed the button and spoke to a friendly staff member that asked us for our name and opened the gate. We parked the car and walked over towards the yellow cottage where we were greeted with a splash of wine by Marilyn. We decided to sit outside as there were some olive trees that provided shade from the 90* heat that day. We opted for the standard tasting. Marilyn took us through each glass and explained about the vineyard. My husband enjoyed the Pinot Noir, while my favorite was the Elivette. During our tasting we went on a short walk around the grounds and saw their donkeys. We really enjoyed this tasting and spent about and hour-hour and a half here. It's relaxing and they do not rush you through the tasting. When we went there was only one other party tasting at the same time. So if your looking for a quiet place to relax and enjoy the scenery while sipping delicious wine, then this is the spot. Ask for Marilyn, she was awesome! Will be back soon! read more

This was the last stop on my self-planned wine tour for my husband's birthday. We had already tasted at 3 other wineries - for a total of almost 20 wines up to this point - so I was worried that my "palate" would be numb. We were pleasantly surprised to arrive and see that we would be privately hosted by a young, but incredibly knowledgeable wine host who definitely knew his wines. His knowledge and candor were appealing and possibly made the wine taste better. Although, as he said, the wine does speak for itself. The 2008 Sauvignon Blanc was amongst our favorites, but the cabs and syrahs were pretty good as well. All the wines were obviously crafted with care, producing well-balanced intricate taste profiles that would drink very well on their own. The wines would also age well, as the flavors became more refined. And f you don't dig wine, at least look at the grounds; it's gorgeous, very "Secret Garden"... read more

Spring Mountain Vineyard - MIRAVALLE HOUSE. - Wineries Near Me - Saint Helena, California

This vineyard is hidden deep on Spring Mountain, on the way to Pride. You need to make a reservation in advance, and it's usually $25 a tasting (we were comped cause we had an viticulturalist with us). It's a huge estate, with wine fermenting in caves dug into the mountain. They have a large herb garden outside the main manor house, where the actual tastings are done, making the walk outside aromatic and pleasant. Extremely quiet and peaceful on the Saturday afternoon we were there... Sometimes almost seemed too quiet, like a set of a horror movie or something. Some of the grapes are grown the Gobelet (goblet) method, where the vines are grown in a goblet-like shape. The syrah and syrah coferment with viognier were expertly crafted with a solid structure and lasting finish. Plenty of fruit, and, with the coferment, a floral bouquet. We had the absolute BEST time at our tasting at Spring Mountain. From the beginning, the Spring Mountain staff could not have been more helpful, accommodating, friendly, or knowledgeable. They supported us in setting up a cave tasting for 13 women and it was more spectacular than we could have imagined. When we arrived, Jacob, our incredible host, greeted us with a refreshing glass of wine outside prior to beginning our tasting. He then began the tour, providing interesting and extensive details on the history of the vineyard and their processes. He answered all of our questions and was as friendly as one could be. Our tasting was in a private space within the cave - the setting was gorgeous, the wine was incredible, and the experience was unforgettable. We will be back as soon as possible!!! read more

I placed my reservation for 2 tastings on Monday for the upcoming Saturday at 11:30 without problem. The next morning I received a call asking if I could change my time to 10:30 to better accommodate their schedule. Since I had to discuss this with my BF I asked if I could have some time. The gentleman said that was fine and he would call me back towards the end of the day to confirm my time. Close to 5:00 he called me back to see if I could change to 10:30. When I told him that we would need to completely reschedule our day but should be able to manage he seemed to be pleased. Then I asked if he could do anything to accommodate us since we needed to upend our schedule. He didn't seem to understand. I asked if we could get an extra pour? He then went on to explain that the website was having troubles and when I booked my reservations it was already booked at 11:30. So I said that they must have website problems. He said they didn't. And explained that it took a real person to go in and phone people who had been overbooked. So, I said, you have website problems. He wasn't happy with my response. Unfortunately he did not mention this to me in the morning. Only that they wanted to move people around in the booking times to better accommodate the winery staff. When I asked again if they could accommodate us in any way, he said that unfortunately the 10:30 booking was full. Interesting, because at the beginning of the conversation 10:30 was available. Next the gentleman said that he had waited all day for me to return his call to confirm my time. I reminded him that he was the one who said that he would call me back towards the end of the day. He pretty much called me a liar without using that word. This has to be one of the worst displays of Customer Service that I have experienced in quite some time. I had received several recommendations to visit the winery. However, if this is the type of people who are employed there, who presumably assist customers, then I see no reason to visit. There are many wineries to visit who would love for us to visit, taste, and spend our money. Apparently Spring Mountain is not one of those wineries. read more

Just visited from Southern California this past Saturday after a colleague of mine recommended this winery. Pros: The winery was fairly easy to get to and parking was readily available. The estate was so gorgeous and peaceful! Really enjoyed the tranquility. Cons: When we arrived we were given our first taste, which I recall was Sauvignon Blanc. We went to go sit in some lawn chairs and take in our surroundings. We were next prompted to join a group at the tasting bar outside. I found this non-traditional for a paid tasting, but we rolled with it. The young woman that poured for us was on her third day, and bless her heart, but she was awful. She even made a point to tell us that other wineries she's worked at told her that she doesn't have the skills to work the front of the house -- big no no. Worse than that, the pours she gave us were literally (and I do not exaggerate) one sip and we only got to taste 3 wines. Afterwards, we were escorted inside to pay... for $40 a tasting! I paid half of this at Charles Krug and had our own wine educator with 5 wines. Had to share because after such a glowing recommendation from my colleague, my mom and I were very disappointed with our experience. Unfortunately I will not be recommending this stop to other friends and family that visit the Napa area. read more

Came here after visiting another winery in the area. we heard good things about Spring mountain on a previous trip to St. Helena. First off this place is by appointment only ,we where lucky to get in like we did on Father's Day. When we drove up to the gate we gave them our name and they told us to park on the right and follow the gravel path on the left where we where greeted by Amy who walk us into this little house and was the one who poured our tasting for us. We where kind of in a rush to pick up wine at another winery so we skipped the how the winery was started and just did the tasting we stated with Estate Sauvignon blanc and ended with Elivette all where good I'm not to much on the white wines but will drink it. The estate Cabernet was real good and also the Elivette was real good and the one me and my girl both liked was the Pinot Noir we got a bottle of the Pinot noir and joined the club cause it's so worth it if you like to drink good wine. There is no fee to join the club you just got to buy 8 bottles of wine a year and that no problem I would drink any of their reds any time and really looking forward to it really want to see the estate. So if you're look for a winery with good wine at reasonable prices this your place. read more

The grounds and buildings are beautiful, and the caves are supposed to also be a real treat to see. The wines were good, though I didn't like the chalky texture they had (due to being unfined). The process of fining can make a wine un-vegan (is this a word?) however, so that's a cautionary note to all the vegan winos out there. I'm giving three stars because the staff member pouring for our tasting was a bit condescending and pretentious, and I didn't appreciate that. I understand that this is Napa and arrogance can be found all around, but please don't bring that out on a paying customer who is trying to learn about the wine. When asked what my favorite wine was, I answered that it was the '07 Cabernet. The staff member then rolled his eyes and said there were four Cabs we had tasted. I told him it was the '07, not the Elivette. If I had liked the Elivette more, I would have said Elivette (which I know is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, but it isn't presented as a red cab during the tasting, it's called the Elivette). 5 stars for grounds, 4 stars for price (I had an amazing tour at Arkenstone that was free, included their caves, and was very thorough, here a tour including the caves costs $75 I think), and 2 for the staff member we were fortunate enough to have. I was really looking forward to my visit here and things were going well until the tasting started, which is a disappointment because it really was pretty. read more

Spring Mountain Vineyard is an exemplary winery. With a very lovely setting, extremely courteous and professional service and great wines, it is definitely a place to take discerning friends. The 2008 Sauvignon Blanc was different and interesting and not the grapefruit bomb that some Sauvignon Blancs have become. The 2008 Syrah Co-Ferment demonstrated how good a syrah can be when it is not all fruit, whereas the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon ($75) was big, balanced and delicious, reminding me somewhat of some of the long cellared 1960s Krugs I drank many years ago when Krug and BV Reserve seemed to make the two best known Napa Valley Cabs. The 2006 and 2007 Elivettes were in the tradition of a really good French Bordeaux. Every wine at Spring Mountain Vineyard was an interesting tasting experience. This is a winery where you can join the wine club and never have a disappointment. Spring Mountain requires reservations but it is well worth it. It is a truly great Napa Valley winery in every respect. Addendum 10/6/11: We opened the 2005 Spring Mountain Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($75) and it was one of the best I ever tasted over the past 40 years. All three of us were in ecstasy. Spring Mountain Vineyard is really making some great wines!!! I can't wait to return next year. read more
