Amarillo Records is the place I go to purchase vinyl when traveling to Davis. They have a wide selection of vinyl with every different type you could think of. If they don't have it in their shelves, just ask and they will do a search for you. The team that works there is always very helpful and remember, they have an upstairs as well - although it is mainly tapes and cassettes. Most of the music is used and prices reasonably but there is a small section for new vinyl as well! New is the typical prices so I always look though all the used albums for hidden treasures! read more

Never been here before but i loooved looking through their records collection but I mainly came here for their record coasters that i heard so much about from mutuals. I was sitting by the coaster basket looking at them one by one to find an artist i may recognize and i did!! I ended up getting a George Benson coaster!! Used it immediately when i got home hehe. I LOVE coming to Armadillo whenever I'm downtown with time to kill! They pack a crazy amount of stuff into this little shop and I could spend hours and hours here. My favorite sections of the store are the upstairs, which has tons of older CD and tapes, and the bar section of the downstairs area, which has a rotating selection of coasters made from old 45s. The prices vary based on what you're looking for; obviously, newer releases are sold at retail value, but their older releases and less popular mediums can't be beat. They have tons of stock for Western music, though I wouldn't hold my breath on anything niche or any new K-pop releases. The staff are super knowledgeable and are all people who love music, so it's a relaxing store to stop in at and explore! read more

Good records, good people. Even had this rare record by the one hit wonder band "The Honeyfuckles" I've been after. Sounded like shit but that's why I like it. I was nervous about getting into vinyl because I thought I'd be treated to the snootiness of John Cusack a la High Fidelity. The staff of Armadillo Music couldn't be more welcoming to newcomers of their passion. I started off just looking for a bossa nova album as a gift, and was lucky enough that they had Getz/Gilberto. I then did some "harmless" browsing and after finding Stop Making Sense, I had to get my own player. Unfortunately, I was foolish enough to get a udreamer off of Amazon and everything sounded awful. When I came into five giant storage bins of a punk and new wave collection, I knew I had to invest in better equipment. Once again, the staff was so enthusiastically helpful. They explained to me why built in speakers ruined the sound, helped me to my car with my new equipment, and told me "Enjoy the journey" as I left. I'm hooked, and I'm so grateful Davis has such a knowledgeable and gracious store for newbies like me. read more

It seems as if music stores are a dying breed these days. Since the days of vinyl records, 8-tracks, cassette tapes, and finally compact discs, the majority of the population seems to stream music on their phones. Whether it is Spotify, Apple Music, iHeartRadio, Pandora, etc., not being able to physically feel a piece of music seems like it is now a thing of the past. Fortunately, "Armadillo Music" has a TON of music available for sale in all formats. And I am a HUGE music fan of all genres; I presently own well over 800 CD's and 100 vinyl records that I've purchased dating back to the 1980's. Located directly on F St. and in between 2nd and 3rd St's in the heart of downtown Davis, Armadillo Music has been a staple store here for several decades. There was once a time when other bigger retailers were operating, especially "Tower Records", "Sam Goody", and "Virgin Megastore", all of which are now defunct. However, this place survived and with the resurgence of vinyl in recent years, this place has quite the followers of new and existing customers. I came here during the afternoon of Saturday 6/24/2023 at around 1:30pm. It was quite busy during my visit as this place was packed with music customers including myself. Inside, you will witness a vinyl listening station complete with headphones. Sometimes, there is nothing better than putting a needle on a 33 1/3 or 45 record and listening to that scratchy sound. And if you are in the mood for a cold drink, this place actually offers 6 different beers on tap! And this is from open to close! If you make ANY music purchase, they'll knock off $1 on a cold beer! Now onto the music itself; there are thousands upon thousands of records from all different decades. This includes, rock, soul, jazz, blues, reggae, country, hip-hop, world music, trance, techno, disco, bluegrass, folk, classical; well you get the idea. And this place sells used as well as new records. I also saw a very sizable amount of compact discs with prices that range from $0.99 up to $12.99 for a single CD. Additionally, they sell a fairly decent selection of cassettes and even 8-tracks! Talk about a blast to the past. In addition to their music, there is also quite a bit of posters representing a varied selection of artists/groups. And if you need a good receiver/stereo system, there are also full entertainment centers with big brands including Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon, and Yamaha. Some of the miscellaneous items they sell are t-shirts, pins, stickers, and even incense. I've got to say this place reminds me of when I lived in the Bay Area and frequented Amoeba and Rasputin. All in all, "Armadillo Music" is an excellent store to check out if you're a music fanatic like myself. They have generous hours of operation; Monday-Wednesday 10am-8pm, Thursday-Saturday 10am-9pm, and Sunday 11am-7pm. they are a buy-sell-trade business so if you have music you want to get rid of, this is the place to come. I like to drop in on this establishment whenever I am in town. Although they now focus on mostly vinyl (I have all I need), I still like to peruse the CD section. It's the furthest from where I live but I try to get there every month since they have a great selection and turnover of vinyl and the owner and staff are super friendly and helpful. NOSTALGIC! This is more than nostalgic though. Armadillo is a Davis namesake. Since I was in high school this was *the* place to go for *true* music lovers. What I appreciate about this place is that they always have the classics and now have a much more expanded section of new music. Seems like the college kids love it! Most recently they have a little "listening section" in the store which is super cute and a cool offering. (See pics) They now also have a mini drink area where you can enjoy the vinyl store atmosphere while having a sip with your friends!! (See pics) This last year they ordered my fav album for me on Vinyl, it was there within a week. They gave me a call to pick it up and made the process super easy. I'll be upfront and honest, I'm not that huge into records, but that doesn't stop me from stopping into Armadillo Music every time I walk by. There is just something about them that draws me in. Maybe it's the great atmosphere, the super friendly staff, or maybe even both. Whatever it is they've got me hooked. The only time I usually walk away having purchased anything is when I'm shopping for someone else - let me say if you have a music enthusiast or record collector in your life this place is a goldmine for gifts. But this time around I was in fact shopping for myself. Everyday (or close to everyday) they have a table set up outside with super discounted products on it - stuff like VHS's, CD's, or whatever have you - but the most exciting thing they put out for me is old record covers without the record inside. I've been having a blast going through and finding albums I recognize to bring home and hang up in my new apartment. I have maybe 9 or 10 now (a good majority of which are all Simon and Garfunkel) and I'm so excited to hang them up. And the best part is? They only cost a dollar a piece! I know for a FACT I'll be coming back next week to find more. And to top it all off, when entering today I was asked to sanitize my hands - which seems like a small thing - but in a place like a record store where everyone is thumbing through all the stock, I feel far more comfortable knowing that they are taking necessary precautions. This is a cute little vinyl record store in Downtown Davis. Lots of records, though most of them are not in the best of conditions (even the most recent RSD section). Great atmosphere, and they have a great collection of CDs as well. Outside, there are discounted items and even some free binders. Some of the sections of the store I think were mislabeled or maybe some records were put back in wrong areas. read more

this is the place to be. This magnificent display of soulful sounds and rythmatic beats will transcend you back in time. Records bring back fond memories of jams and chill times. Once you step through the door your lost in choices. Don't know where to start then just start by looking up at the ceiling or the walls because you might get some ideas from the posters that are displayed everywhere for your viewing pleasure. Ideas will spark interest and as you will salivate excitement trying to find that love, chill, sad, mundane or happy song and album. Don't stop there because they are now setting up a bar for you to partake in some adult tasty beverages. The new bar is laced with old school players and speakers and timers which I think is the cats meow ! Even though we didn't buy much this time. I love Armadillo. As a former Texan, finding anything with Armadillo in it's name was a plus. :) Wow...what an ever-changing and comprehensive collection! They have vinyl and CDs--some which are very obscure and rare finds. Here is something new---they sell BEER. Good beer, mind you. Spare nothing, Armadillo. If I can find an Eagles LP in the same condition as when I first bought it in 1978, you have a customer for life. Give me a nice IPA while I do that? Even better. I do need to give a shout out to the staff. I've never had anyone who isn't incredibly helpful and friendly. As for COVID considerations, they seem to take things seriously. Staff and patrons wear masks. You are also required to sanitize your hands (which makes perfect sense if you are flipping through albums). I don't know if they limit the people in the store---there weren't many when I was there so I dont' know if that's ever a problem. If you're looking for music that isn't a download or streaming on your iPhone (YES, FOLKS, IT EXISTS) this is your place! read more

Stopped in here on the way up to Sacramento. What a great record store! The store is organized well, they have a great selection of new and used records, and the prices on used records are some of the best I've seen. To top it off, the staff are friendly and not snooty like some record stores can be. They ended up taking a few records I had for trade-in, even though they weren't in the best condition. This record store not only boasts a decent collection of great vinyls that collectors would appreciate, but also beers and ciders on tap! Armadillo Music has an organized selection of vinyl records ranging from various genres and artists. I feel like any music lover and vinyl record collector will find something amazing here. They have great deals and I found records for less than a dollar, what a steal! I ended up walking out of this store with six records all for under four dollars! While browsing, you can enjoy drinks from their selection of beers and ciders. The selection is a tad limited, but it's varied enough for you to find something enjoyable. They tend to have drinks from local breweries available. Staff is incredibly friendly and made my shopping experience enjoyable. I'll definitely be coming back some time soon! read more

Was my first visit to this shop which is located in what appears to be the downtown city center of Davis. Staff was really friendly and allowed us to stay in a few minutes longer after closing. There was a large section of alphabetized bins dedicated to newly ordered vinyl compressed of all genres. Wish this had been a little better organized as it could have save me some time. Jazz section was just ok but pricing was reasonable on some of the more rare 2nd/3rd pressing titles. They have a rather decent sized cd collection but it was difficult to look through as everything was stored on a bookshelf like setup and you could only see the titles. read more

I'm a pretty specialized 45 collector so I haven't come across anything on my want list (their 45 selection pretty small) but I've picked up a few new release albums and singles (60s garage/beat/international stuff). Last time we came my boyfriend sold off some of his collection for and the compensated him decently. I've been a patron of Armadillo for YEARS. Since the old location in Davis, and when they even had another one (in Rocklin if I remember correctly). Today on October 4th, 2022, I was in the area after a local appointment, and decided to stop by. Even waited until they opened at 10am. As I looked through the cd section, I found a release that was marked $0.00 (see picture). I asked the one and only employee "Are items priced as marked?". He replied "Yes.". I told him it looks like I found the deal of the day, and presented the cd to him. He kind of laughed and said "yeah" as he scanned it without looking at the tag closely. He suddenly realized that it said $0.00, and proceeded to tell me he couldn't sell it for that. I replied "priced as marked". He said it was obviously a mistake. "Not my mistake" I said. He said he would sell it for $6.98. "No, you said priced as marked" I told him. "It wasn't my fault a mistake was made". He wouldn't budge. All the while trying to switch out the jewel case with the $0.00 tag as fast as possible. Too bad I took a picture of it beforehand. I told him he lost a customer for good. All over a cd they probably paid $1-$3 for, and wouldn't honor their mistake. read more

Great atmosphere, great staff. They like to talk to you about shared music tastes. Biggest collection of classical CDs I've seen so far, so this is my main place to go if I'm trying to find something. Still, the selection is a bit lacking, but I've found some good picks as well. I stopped in here when walking downtown Davis, CA. Cool shop with a 70s feel. Loved that. Iam a huge analog fan and have 1000s of records with a $1500 record player. Not rich at all but a costly hobby on the high end side of things. Im an afficionado or connoseur of sorts but a slave to listening to black and death metal on a high end Technics pro dj turntable with a Shure needle. Lol. I know. Metal in high fidelity. Sounds odd. I digress. Hehe. Sooooo I love the dinosaurs called record shops. If I see one I must check it out even though I listen to stuff you never find in vinyl stores other than Amoeba and Rasputin that has a big following for black and death metal vinyl and cds in Berkeley and SF. Still I check for some of my roots like Priest or Maiden on vinyl in top condition. Fun but they are normally not well-cared for. I will seek out vinyls in tip top shape with sharp corners on the cover or still in shrinkwrap and scratchless shiny vinyls too. Usually find those in specialized markets like Ebay and Discogs. This shop is cool. A lot like a Ken Watts record shop where I grew up in Novato. They sell lp players and used gear. Grab bags and cool posters etc. Good shop but small selection. It is hard to have a record shop with a large selection like Amoeba and Rasputin as it costs a mint in rent. But if you like discovering new music and not too picky or a collector then this shop will do. There is so much music out there that it is hard to stock it all without a massive shop. This is not one of those. Small selection for a small college town. read more

Vinyl records galore!! This record store is very clearly labeled by genre, time period/style... they also cell cds, surprise packs of 5 vinyls for $1, and records coasters. You name the vintage music style, and they got it! I'll definitely add this to my list of places to grab some records once I get my player :)... I plan to decorate my wall! I bought three records for about $10. Most of the super old ones being around $2, more popular ones $5, and more modern ones around $20-$25. Gotta check up on my Yelp fam!! So for Xmas my mom got me a brand new record player...so cool! Needless to say I was v excited but I needed some vinyls to jam out to! Armadillo Music to the rescue!!! I've never bought vinyls before but the staff was super helpful and friendly . They answered all my dumb questions and made me feel like a million bucks . They have a listening station and the nice man with the cool sideburns gave me some pointers lol. I listened to some Kenny Rodgers, Madonna, Ronnie Milsap, Beatles and my all time favorite FLEETWOOD MAC! I decided to buy Fleetwood Mac Rumors and couldn't be happier with my choice! As you probably know when I visited Davis, I was pretty charmed by the feeling of the downtown area. Everything is so small, feels really local and effortlessly authentic for the most part- and the Armadillo is definitely a place that epitomizes that feel. Inside, there is this cute little display with some fake armadillo figurines and A BILLION CDS, VINYLS, AND DISCS EVERYWHERE!! Never really being in a music store like this, I was really taken aback and spent a good while in here just soaking in the hipster feels. I was really impressed by their ginormous collection of different genre of music- from classical to blues and contemporary. Then there was the CHEAP DVDs (from WHOLE series collections from the movies that were just a few years old- my friend totally picked up the complete Bourne series.) as well as these really cute CD coasters, which are repurposed discs that can no longer play but HEY it can look dang good underneath a cup of coffee (insta-worthy!) Totally worth the check out if you are in the area. :D It charmed me! read more
