Went here for the first time a last month with my sister. Was really looking forward to going here because of the reviews. We bought vinyls, CDs, and a cassette tape for my dad's birthday gift. The vinyls my sister chose were pretty pricey but the CDs and cassette tape were set at great prices and very affordable. It was really hot in the store when we went but I still enjoyed the experience. Staff was really friendly but the layout of the store was a bit confusing at first. I loved the upstairs area because the overall look of the store is really cool. I liked this place overall and it was a cool petite record store. Not my number 1 favorite record store but it's certainly in the top of my list! read more

This is basically a 'first impressions' review. I'm not a local, but if there's vinyl being sold around the corner, I'm there. It may be a small record shop, but I've found some great gems in this store. I like various types of music, but my music taste has been tailored to a more specific sound that has grown so much stronger for ska-punk/crust punk/punk/psychobilly etc. I've loved Tiger Army, Anti-Schism, and Choking Victim ever since I was fifteen. Nowadays, I listen more to Subhumans, Bad Manners, Madness, Citizen Fish, blah blah blah.... Anyways, this record shop has a pretty impressive selection of the mentioned genres compared to Rasputin's on Powell St. in San Francisco (I DESPISE THAT SPECIFIC RASPUTIN'S). Just by looking through the cd bins, I've found more bands to grow my music collection to the genres I had such a hard time looking for during high school. Plus, they sell local art work, endless Culture Club pins, iconic records perched on the top shelf surrounding the store, some posters shoved in a tiny corner, and d.i.y. vinyl coasters. I was pleasantly surprised. Pros: NICELY ORGANIZED: -All CD Media is protected and behind the counter. Cover is only available and provides all basic album info. -A few labels recommend related artists which is nice for a music fiend. -A few labels mention related record companies I believe.....it's lovely. (I'm a fan of Two-Tone Records, Hellcat Records, Dischord Records..) Good looking, knowledgeable staff Lots of girls show up to this spot Recognizes the true valued price of vinyls Charming Shop atmosphere Cons(?): Somewhat overpriced (CDs that cost $14? The Cramps' Bad Music for Bad People is a great album... but it's a cd.... welp, whatever a record store needs to do to keep the lights on and function.) This is one of the best record stores that I've ever been to. It's small, but the people who work there are really helpful and knowledgeable. The discount racks are the best because the CDs there are REALLY cheap. Once in a while they'll put the clearance on half off, so they become, like, 99-cents each. If you really like 90s music, this is a great place to go because that's the stuff that usually gets binned. Found treasures here like early eurodance, Hilary Duff's Christmas album, S Club 7, Lisa Loeb...all of which I plan to listen to IRONICALLY, of course. I like that they let you listen to the CDs too. Also, one time I accidentally left the CD I was listening to in the machine when I bought the album. I called them immediately and was like, "HEY, SO TOTAL BLONDE MOMENT, BUT..." They held the CD for me and I was able to pick it up the next day. Awesome. read more

"Best indie selection" is by default. How can you have a good indie selection without carrying vinyl? Too bad they ever closed the vinyl annex. I used to shop there about weekly then. It was an uncommonly good store for a city this size. Far less crap to sift through than at the Beat, and there were some astounding nuggets of garage, punk, psych, and weirdo sounds like you hear on KDVS. Now, it's pretty much the same indie selection of CDs that you see at larger chain stores. I have been in there three times in the last year and twice left emptyhanded. The other time, I picked up a used CD for $5. Davis really does have enough vinyl shoppers and freaks for unusual music that the city could support an Ameoba Jr. or maybe a Rasputin's that's half as good as the Berkeley location (or 3x better than the Vallejo or Stockton Rasputin's). Armadillo does not seem willing to cater to that market. They seem content with being just barely better than very average. This was a 5-star store at the height of the vinyl annex. Very sad demise. read more

The new location is a nice little upgrade from the previous spot next door. Now a little bigger, but not not big that it loses its intimacy. It actually looks like theres space for events like in store signings or shows. The best part is there's a bargain bin for CDs and their movie/TV DVD collection is growing. read more

Super organized spot to do some Vintage Vinyl Searching. The guy behind the counter was very helpful when I told him I was traveling he actually packaged the 2 records I purchased in a cardboard box and taped them down so they wouldn't get destroyed. That earned this place an easy 5 stars. Going above and beyond like that is so rare these days. read more

A cool little independant CD shop. But it's so small, that the selection is limited. It'd be hard to come in looking for something specific - much better to browse around and hopefully uncover a few cheap finds. They also have cassettes, DVDs, incense, and other stuff! As I said in some other review, I'm a huge classical music fan. Being a poor student, I had to rely on used CD shops a lot to explore the world of classical music. This is one of them. Store is a little crummy, and their selection not as diverse as Rasputin or Amoeba. Listening station's headphones were so worn out my ears got itchy. Still, it definitely served my need. I bought tickets for my first concert ever here, so it holds a few special place in my heart.. Whenever I'm in downtown, I just have to go here and browse through their selection. The listening booths are great in that they let you pretty much browse through an entire album. I am slowly moving more towards digital music (I am in no way an audiophile) but this place is why I still have to buy entire albums instead of just one song. I just feels good to have a real copy in your possession. Always check the bargain bin, you might find something interesting for cheap. read more

I have been buying records for 30 years everywhere in the US and outside the country. I came here the other day and this record store charges way too much on their vinyl records and cassette tapes. The records that you could get for $1 at like Rasputin, Dimples or Esoteric here they charge you $8 or more. I lived all over the place in the country and the best places to go to with decent prices are A1 record store in New York if you are in the area it is a must visit. Graywhale in Utah. Reckless in Chicago. Hungry Ears in Honolulu. Wall of Sound in Seattle. These stores appreciate their costumers who love music. First, a disclaimer - I like just about any shop with used records and cds. Armadillo is a small shop. Their selection is limited, but their used selection is nicely varied, and they do great deals on things that they don't typically carry. They have a nice selection of dvds, stereo equipment, and other goodies as well. They are very happy to help you out, and work to help you with whatever you need. Today I witnessed sorry customer treatment. This store was "at capacity " and an older person was at the door merely wanting to ask about an exchange and one of the store employees stood right in front of her and demanded she leave the store. Once outside the employee was within 2 feet of the customer so he wasn't following the stores own guidelines. Incredibly rude to a paying customer. When this "covid era" is over I hope these people remember the sorry treatment they get. I will NEVER step foot on this store again. I can get what I want at other stores, Discogs or Amazon. Where do I start? I about freaked out when they relocated next store. I thought the future had finally got a hold of them and destroyed one of the last brick and mortar stores that sold music. This place has been around forever. You can preview your records and cds before you buy! Unless the records are super valuable or rare. You can special order concert tickets, vinyls, cds and dvds. They offer a great frequent customer punch card. The owner is very aware of good music and all music for that matter. I have literally had people come out of town (from san Jose and san Francisco to visit me and see this place and the davis co-op). It is usually the reason my friends come see me instead of me going to see them. They carry all sorts of movies here and have a lot of free posters and sometimes have live music. They have record players here too. And I am not talking some cheap Crosby record/tape/radio/ cd combo from target. Real record players that won't jack up your precious vinyls. I believe they also buy record players. Anyways this place is amazing, awesome atmosphere and even when I can listen to a cd on pandora or you tube I still choose to go to this place because nothing beats holding the actual album in your hand and supporting a local business. I will support places like this as long as I can. I hope more people learn the value of holding your music in your hands and admiring the cd booklet or vinyl sleeve. read more

I love this place. They always have good stock that seems to rotate often. Every time I come in I find new diamonds I didn't even realize I wanted. Plus, their prices seem decent. They have used turntables and speaker sets and I'm thinking of going vintage. Those seem to be different every time I come in. read more

This store is close to my heart. i live a ridiculous distance from Armadillo, but ill go in every time i go by. they have a ton of indie music and if they dont have it they can usually order it for you and let you know when it gets there. they're not arrogant or snobby and they never treat you like your money is no good. they answer your questions and they don't try to trap you into buying something you're not sure about. its a very comfortable store. its not uncommon to find my nephew and i digging through the hip-hop section trying to decide what we should buy vs what we want to buy. read more
