I know this is a hot take, but one of if not the best steaks in B'ham! We started with the corn bisque and pork belly both which are incredibly delicious and fresh. We then split the 16 oz wagyu ribeye and wow - the marbling was incredible and cooked to perfection. We also enjoyed the succotash with the lovely addition of the aioli and the rapini which was lightly charred. We finished with the affogato and the bon bon service which were both good. Amazing night out . Started with the complimentary valet staff , walked us in to introduce us to the hostesses. Hostesses checked us in said would be small wait and showed us the main bar and walked us down to the POGO speak easy and ordered us an adult beverage . Food service was quick and efficient. Quality of food is top notch and quantity is surprisingly generous for a high end restaurant. This is a very nice setting but not pompous . The people watching is also very entertaining. Armour House is a beautiful concept that the city of Birmingham was missing. It is pleasantly designed and the open kitchen is really fun. The food was delicious overall. The pork chop did lack a flavor but the seared gulf fish was bursting with flavors but was a little salty. The staff were professional and knowledgeable about the menu which is always a plus. We celebrated a birthday at the Armour House and it is a cozy(yet large) dining room, nicely appointed bar and large windows to view the city streets, amazing! We started out with bread(fabulous) and a charcuterie board amazing choices! The staff was so attentive and helpful with our menu and drink selections. Water glasses and drinks were never left unattended, soiled plates removed promptly and always a smile on their faces. I had the filet, perfectly cooked medium, juicy and charred. One of our dinners had the Gulf Fish on rice and gumbo base and yet another had the Mushroom Risotto. All presented very well, our only complaint, everything tasted too salty. My husband and I had a wonderful experience. Right from the start, free valet parking what a great service to not have to worry about parking. I love how much care and attention went into the restoration of such a beautiful building. It was a topic of conversation during our experience. The staff, all of them we interacted with were very friendly and helpful. Especially our server, she set the tone for our meal and enjoyment. We didn't order a lot since I was not very hungry, but what we did order was really, really good. We started with the tuna crudo then had the prime ribeye, collard greens, and wood fired mushrooms. For dessert we had the bread pudding and affogato. My husband loved his steak, I thought the greens and mushrooms were the best I have had at any restaurant. Living in Las Vegas we have access to a lot of phenomenal places and Armour would be in the top 10 category. If we lived here it would be a regular go to, not just for special occasions. read more

The place has a great ambiance. The service was top notch. The tuna crudo appetizer was one of the best things we have ever eaten. The only negative was all the steaks are dry aged and we do not care for the taste of dry aged steaks. And yes we realize a lot of people love steaks like this. There were not any options for a non dry aged steak. We would still go back for the tuna crudo alone but would choose something else as our entree. We had the Denver cut Australian waygu. I am really excited to write a review about Armour House and Pogo since I heard about their opening. The exterior was beautiful. I went with a good friend of mine and we were greeted with warm professional welcomes. Mind you, you will have to make a reservation to sit in the interior. But we were lucky enough to snag a seat at the bar. We were very well taken care of with multiple interactions with the bartenders who gave us lots of cool information about the restaurant and speakeasy. *please note the prices coincide with the quality of the food and drinks. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny.* We started off with wood fire oysters as our appetizer. For my first drink, I had the armour house martini. Im normally not a big fan of martinis but this one likely changed my mind with how good it was. And the oysters were incredible. The best I've had in a while due to the delicious toppings. For the main course, I decided to get the bone in pork schnitzel and the mango sesame mojito for my second drink. Both were money well spent. The schnitzel was a great size for the price and you will likely be taking home leftovers. This was the first time I had Brussel sprouts that I actually enjoyed. My friend order the gulf fish. It tasted like it was straight out of New Orleans. Amazing. The presentation of both food and drinks were outstanding. Once we were done at the bar, we decided to visit Pogo, the speakeasy below the restaurant. I won't say too much other than they have a unique menu, entrance, and atmosphere. Im glad that the Birmingham community has encouraged the development of such a distinct establishment. 10/10. If I had to sum this restaurant up in one word: LOUD. There are no soft surfaces for sound absorption and the owner should seriously consider adding some. It's nearly impossible to hear your waiter or enjoy conversation with your dinner. Service was great when our dinner first started. Appetizers were quick and absolutely delicious. Highly recommend the goat cheese!! Pork belly was fantastic as well. Fun spins on cocktails. However, as the restaurant got busier around 6:30, our entrees took way too long to come out and our waiter became too busy to check on us. We wanted dessert but by the time our entrees came out and our waiter returned, we were tired and ready for some quiet. The Denver cut is a very interesting steak. It has a different flavor than anything I've tried before. Highly recommend. I had the gulf fish and it was ok. I've eaten at many upscale places along 30A where the fish was caught the same day, so it's fair to say you can't really compare the two. Totally exceeded expectations, and I had high expectations going in. This was the best steak I have had in a very long time. Normally when faced with a "special cut" like the Denver cut at Armour House, I usually scoff at it because it can't possibly be as good as other cuts per price point, and I always feel like the restaurant is trying to sell me something that I normally would not get. Not so here. We ordered multiple steaks to compare, and the Denver cut lives up to the hype. Our service was New York City steakhouse first class. The ambiance is beautiful I can't wait to go back. The bar tenders were great, but Logan Turner their GM was nearly physical and we have never been treated. At a restaurant the way he treated us. He was completely out of control, arrogant hateful, aggressive toward Misty. He would be arrested in normal situations. My husband and I made reservations for 6:00 the week of Thanksgiving. We arrived early and headed to the downstairs speakeasy, Pogo, for a drink. The drinks were delicious and the ambiance was perfect. At 6, we headed back upstairs for our dinner reservations. Our server, Bradley, made our experience incredible! He started by sharing all about the building and the chef, and gave some drink and starter recommendations. We got the bread service and split the Caesar salad (one of the best Caesar salads we've ever had). We chose the 14oz NY strip, Mac and cheese, frites, and whipped potatoes as our main. Everything we had was delicious and perfectly cooked. For dessert we chose the cherry chocolate trifle and the Satsuma roll- both incredible! I couldn't stop looking around at the place- from the original hardwood floors and subway tile to the lighting, everything was perfectly designed. The interior is very sophisticated and contemporary with large banquets, comfortable oversize chairs and lots of black and white. Valet parking is complimentary. What a unique destination restaurant that Birmingham deserves. We had the tuna, beet toast and baked oysters to start. Could not have been better. Perfect service and next level food. Then the lamb pie and redfish. Perfectly cooked redfish served over gumbo with shrimp. Could have eaten it twice. Lamb pie was a five star pot pie that screams gourmet comfort food. Favorite new restaurant in town! On the 1st trip neither of us got a steak and we head a great meal for around $100. The grouper over gumbo was outstanding and the pork schnitzel was massive and had great flavor paired with the Brussels. On our second trip went the steak route and was pleased. A little higher priced than it should be, but best steak in town for me. The setting is awesome and service was 1st rate. read more

Armour House is the real deal. My wife and I went for date night. Right from the valet, the team was exceptionally friendly and wished our experience to be wonderful. When we walked in, the hosts greeted us as if we were old friends, like they were happy we finally made it. One of them quickly seated us, and before she left, she told us she was glad we were here, and they hoped we enjoyed it. From there, our server, John, immediately greeted us and set the tone. He went over the building's history, the background of the Head Chef, and the intention of the menu selections. Within two minutes, the atmosphere had been solidified, something my wife says she's never truly experienced before. John gave us some excellent recommendations, and was never pushy to upsell. My wife had the Signature Martini, while I had the Signature Gin and Tonic (I can't remember the exact names). The Martini was smooth and savory; perfect. My Gin and Tonic was refreshing and fruity, but never too sweet. We started with the Steak Tartare, which was so good, we had to retain ourselves from scarfing it down hastily. For entrees, my wife ordered the Duck Pappardelle, while I requested the Seared Gulf Fish. When we got our second round of drinks, I was recommended the New York Sour, while my wife had an Old Fashioned, with a spirit recommendation from Carla, the Beverage Director. Both were equally as enjoyable as round one. The Sour was sweet with a dash a sour, but never too overpowering. My wife's Old Fashioned satisfied her and more, a drink she always uses for a litmus test when it comes to the expertise of the mixologists. We did not wait long at all for our entrees to arrive. The Gulf Fish was exceptional; Seared to a satisfying light crunch on first bite, then hitting a light, buttery texture of the fish that melted in my mouth. The Duck Andouille complimented well, rich and creamy, and standing on its own while never taking away from the other elements of the dish. My wife's Duck Pappardelle was also wonderful, and while she wasn't expecting it to be sweet (not a nitpick, I think she just overlooked the significance of the butternut squash in the dish), she soon adjusted and fell in love with the dish, which was creamy, sweet, with the Duck bringing in the savory finish. We tasted both of ours and felt if we each had ordered the opposite, we'd have had no regrets. On the side, I also ordered the Crispy Brussels, which were exactly as described; a nice crispy outside with an interior not too soft, and not too crunchy, just perfect. The vinaigrette added a wonderful tangy savor to it. When we were finished, we had the Matilda Trio for dessert, a delectable combination of chocolate, cream, and cherries, which we also finished off. That was such a big thing for us: Everything was portioned perfectly down to a science. We made it through each course and never felt too heavy by the time we finished. Mind you, we were definitely full by the end, rightfully so, but not so much that we felt lethargic. It allowed us to truly chart a course through the menu from start to finish, and I'm glad we could. John was exceptional as our server. As I mentioned at the front end of this review, he took great care of us and we never felt ignored, nor like he was overbearing. He was a delight to talk to, and I would definitely request him by name when (not if) we return. As we exited, we were acknowledged and thanked by every employee we passed for coming to spend our time there. The team at Armour House should be very proud of their accomplishment. It's the real deal when it comes to an exceptional restaurant experience, whether you're looking to celebrate something special, or just to have an outstanding date night. We look forward to returning, and we look forward to experiencing Pogo we it opens its doors. I hope others soon recognize this place as a Birmingham staple, because it absolutely will be. read more

Dinner at Armour House: After a much anticipated wait to book a reservation we were able to get a table after a 3 week wait. Ambiance is amazing and the location is prime! Plenty of street parking and valet make it very convenient. The bar area is beautifully designed and decorated and once you are seated in the main dining (right past a beautiful display case of meats) you feel like you are transported to another city. Our server greeted us and gave us all the menu changes, specials and prices (which were quite a lot, taking they/them a good 5 minutes to go through them). The options were endless and after ordering a cocktail for myself, we placed our appetizer order. While we waited, I went to the restroom (which was also stunning and beautifully decorated). Women and Men share the same restroom but with different toilet closets. There were two for men and two for women and a shared sink/dry area. Upon opening Women's Room #1 I was appalled to see that some had defecated on the toilet floor and an entire roll of toilet paper was strewn across that room. I moved to Women's Room#2 only to open the door to find a woman sitting on the toilet who said that her toilet room door would not lock. Upon leaving the restroom I looked high and low for the hostess to tell her that it needed attention but there was not a hostess to be found. By now, my stomach was queasy and I really just wanted to leave. Thirty minutes passed and our appetizers arrived. They were small in portion but good. After an additional 45 minutes, our salads arrived. Water and beverages are filled by a beverage attendant so we sat with empty glasses of water/tea throughout most of the visit. We had now been in the restaurant 1.5 hours and still no entree in sight. Finally after 30 additional minutes they arrived. My ribeye was heavily seared/seasoned on the outside and a perfect temperature of medium on the inside. However, first bite in it was cold. Not just lukewarm but cold. My spouse had fresh grilled snapper and it was served on a bed of cold potato salad (odd combination) and other sauteed vegetables. He rated it as mediocre. Two hours in and we are starving. I eat a few bites, then ask for box to take home for the dog. By evening end, the restaurant was very busy and lively (incredibly loud making it difficult to communicate/hear). I'm so disheartened, so we get the check and decline dessert (as we are afraid of how long that might possibly keep us there). It is expected that a fine dining experience will run around $300 for two people (with only one cocktail) BUT it is very unexpected and unnecessary for a dinner meal for two people to run 2+ hours WITH inadequate service, cold food AND unkept facilities. I suggest adding a bathroom attendant to your payroll as this might help with unruly bathroom etiquette. I really don't know when we have had a meal this bad in Birmingham. Ever. WOW! Birmingham has another wonderful restaurant! Armour House is a fabulous restaurant! It is located on 1st Avenue North in a beautifully restored building. There is a speakeasy downstairs called POGO that is fun to enjoy before dinner. Armour House also has a wonderful bar upstairs outside the restaurant. The food is fabulous. It is similar to Bones in Atlanta. Excellent meats. Everything is al la cart. What most impressed me about Armour House is the staff. They are amazing. Very professional. Very customer focused. The staff is a notch above any other restaurant I have been to in Birmingham. If Frank Stitt had found this amazing staff he'd have been able to open Highlands backup. Our table was not ready on time and they profusely apologized and gave us each a delicious tuna appetizer to makeup for our wait. Also one of our party's steaks was not cooked properly and they gave us each an extra glass of wine. The food was delicious. It was the best pork chop that I have ever had. Now it's not inexpensive to eat here but it is delicious. If you haven't already been then you should treat yourself to a fun night at a beautiful restaurant in downtown Birmingham.
