Cayo Coco has been on my list of restaurants to try for a few months now, and I can confidently say that I'll be back soon! I genuinely could have ordered almost anything off the menu; everything sounded delicious. Unfortunately, I don't have the budget or the ability to consume every dish off the menu, so my boyfriend and I settled on splitting 2 small plates and 1 entree. What we ordered: -Smoked Fish Fritters: a Cuban delicacy. Still thinking about how good these were. Plenty to share! -Snapper Ceviche: personally not my thing, but my boyfriend loved this. I honestly wanted to like this, but the raw fish started to weird me out. -Jerk Chicken: served atop a tomato/bbq risotto that was devine. The inside here is so cozy and slightly tropical. I went to this place once before and was lukewarm about it, so I decided to give it another try. Kind of wish I hadn't. My friend and I stopped in for some light bites early in the evening before going to a bar that doesn't serve food. The ambiance is nice. I did find it odd that the hostess seemed surprised we were "just walking in" since there was almost no one there. It took a pretty good while for our server to greet us, but we weren't in a hurry. We ordered mojitos and they were terrible. The lime and mint weren't muddled, rather just garnishes, so the drinks had no flavor. Unfortunately, that was the theme with the food too. We ordered blistered shishitos, empanadas, and ceviche. The empanadas came out first and the picadillo inside tasted like manwich sloppy joes with sugar added. It didn't have any Cuban flavors at all-- no cumin, alcaparrado, cilantro-- just sweet tomato paste. Next came the ceviche, which was unlike any ceviche I've ever had. It seemed to be maybe poached in coconut milk or something? It didn't have any discernible citrus flavor (or really, any flavor at all). It was just a pile of bland shrimp with nothing else in it-- no chiles, onion, tomato, or seasonings. Honestly, the plantain chips served with the ceviche were the best thing we had. Finally, we had the blistered shishitos. They weren't really 'blistered' much, so they were overly firm. They also could've used some sea salt or any kind of seasoning. They had a smoky flavor, but a fake one, like they were blasted with a butane torch rather than cooked over a flame. They tasted like someone had put out a cigarette on them. Very disappointing meal for over $100. Definitely will not be back. read more

Horrible meal. Fish was way over cooked, fries were cold. The service was OK but the poor server was working as hard as she could but had to many tables. I went here last 2022. I gave it a five. Cayo Coco restaurant missed the mark for me. I really enjoyed how the dining areas really lean into the tropical theme. I ordered the Espresso Martini ($14); it was lacking something in the flavor, but that could possibly be from me going against the grain when ordering. I had the jerk chicken, it was not a true jerk chicken ($29) it was basically grilled chicken with sauce so when expecting something more authentic it was disappointing to say the least. The tamarind caesar ($15) was also different than I expected; although I would make a trip for it, I would order it again when visiting. The best thing I tried was actually the typhoon brusssel sprouts ($12), I was very happy with them and honestly would have been okay if that was the only thing I ordered. The wait staff was great, very personable and being willing to dicuss the menu and give suggestions. Espresso Martini(Vodka-Carajillo) 7/10 flavor is not what accustomed to might have been better with the Rum normally fixed with. Tamarind Caesar- at first glance definitely not my regular Caesar. Definitely not an average Caesar the lettuce is grilled giving it a smoky flavor, caught off guard but I would order again. 8/10 Jerk Chicken- overall was a good dish first time trying farro wasn't sure what to expect made me think of oatmeal, the mango salsa and sauce on the chicken was good the chicken itself was a bit dry but still good. Overall I would give the dish a 7.5 I rarely order chicken out and I think this was a reminder why. Typhoon Brussel Sprouts- had great taste 9/10 I could come back and get a drink with the Brussels. Would consider the Star of the night The price was consistent with the area, nothing seemed overly priced. Portions were also large enough to be split so if with a group and wanting to try multiple items you would be able to do it and have enough. read more

Me and Cousin had the most laid back and delicious dining experience at Cayo Coco a few weeks back. We are both new to Birmingham, her having been in town for a little over a year. I was surprised at the proximity to our work place. I was even more surprised at the quaint area that it was tucked into. We went on a weekday at 1930 and had no trouble with their parking. It was not busy, and we were greeted, seated, and served our drinks within 10 minutes. The drink selection was my favorite park of the experience. It is a unique collection of rum cocktails that are sure to please everyone. And they were absolutely delicious!! The food options rotate and are as delicious as they look in the photos. This is such a hidden gem! I think a lot of people know about their drinks but there's also a dining room in the back. It's small (6-10 tables) which makes the meal feel more intimate. The wait staff were excellent and very attentive! The drinks were amazing (great mojito!), the food was surprisingly good and the desserts were to die for! I think a lot of restaurants just put basic desserts on the menu to check off the box of offering them but Cayo Coco's desserts were very intentional and well done. I would recommend the filet, oxtail fried rice (seasonal) and the empanadas. Cayo Coco - A Dinner Worth the Hype Finally did a full dinner at Cayo Coco and honestly? It hits. From the moment we sat down, the vibe was chill but classy--dim lighting, great music, and everyone around us just seemed to be having a good time. The staff was fast and friendly, and even though I didn't grab a seat at the bar, I saw the same bartenders from my last visit--still killing it. We kicked off with the crawfish mofongo, which was super fun and a little different. The texture was unique, and that creole sauce? I'd come back just for that--it had depth and flavor without being too heavy. For mains, the crab fried rice surprised me. It was light, which let the crab actually shine (instead of drowning it in soy like most places). Perfect balance. The Cubano sandwich was thick, juicy, and flavorful, with pulled pork that was seriously tender. The yucca fries it came with were such a fun surprise--crispy outside, potato-like inside. Loved the twist. Drinks were a highlight: the banana painkiller was smooth, tropical, and that banana-almond foam? Next-level presentation and flavor. The Zombie delivered big rum energy--bold, not overly sweet, and strong enough to live up to its name. No dessert this round, but honestly, didn't need it. The food and drinks were more than satisfying. Final thoughts? Cayo Coco nails it. Great food, great drinks, great energy. Definitely coming back for another round. read more

The rum-focussed cocktail menu is everything. I want all drinks served to me in a fish henceforth. The appetizers were amazing, collard green cornbread was approved by me (cornbread snob). I had the Jerk Chicken, it was certainly spicy and certainly delicious. Portion sizes are suitable for large groups. Parking can be hard around Morris Ave but it's worth it! Inside is dark and colorful. Staff is super friendly and punctual. I will definitely be back! I believe the menu rotates fairly often. Cayo Coco Rum Bar and Restaurant offers modern Caribbean cuisine with Cuban influences. Owner Andrew Collins, a really nice guy I might add, has created an attractive restaurant space with an awesome vibe and it is consistently superb in terms of food quality and service. We noticed from their Instagram page that they added a few new items on the menu and decided to make an early Friday evening reservation. We were lucky to have Ashley as our server who was full of energy and personality. She has thorough knowledge of the menu items, including beverages, and she was ready to answer any of our questions. We started with the tasty collard green cornbread with hot honey and rum butter. This unique combination sounded too interesting not to try. For entrees we chose the oxtail fried rice and the jerk chicken with risotto. The oxtail fried rice is some of the best fried rice I've ever had and the charred yum yum sauce is just perfect! The jerk chicken has a bit of a kick as one would expect, but it is a beautiful dish. I would suggest getting the spicy sauce on the side. Kudos to the chef for thinking out of the box with these cleverly conceived menu items. Cayo Coco checks all of the important boxes and this visits gets an A+. The only challenge of the evening was parking. They don't offer valet so you might have to circle a bit for a spot. Still just a small inconvenience for an excellent dining experience. read more

I think a restaurant should make an effort to accommodate a diners request if not an imposition to the restaurant. that didn't happen with Caya De Coco unfortunately. I wa ted to order a dish that came with pasta. I requested to have the pasta set to the side and have some sauce on the pasta. the waiter said they couldn't because of how busy they were. Anyone with common sense knows it's not a challenging request to place pasta to the side and place sauce on the pasta. it's not like I was asking them to reinvent the meal or change the recipe. Cool and modern atmosphere with kind staff and delicious drinks. As of February 2025, the red snapper with chickpea curry and mint chutney will be on the menu until mid-March. It is the best snapper I've ever had! The flavor and quality of the fish was absolutely incredible. The crab fried rice was nothing special in comparison. First, the good. The ambiance is very nice. I just got back from colombia and I recognized a lot of the foods and flavors. They had soft tropical music playing in the background. It def has a good vibe. My food all tasted very good! It felt like they used high quality ingredients and everything was super fresh. My okra was hot and crispy and I devoured it!!! They have a huge rum bar and a large selection of rum cocktails. They are all pretty and fruity and mine tasted good, and I am sure they all do. My service was also really good. The waiter didn't act pretentious or judgy. The ONLY downside to me was the price. I know that food cost more nowadays, so it cost them more to make. But the portions were not big enough to me to warrant the price. Or if you're going to have a "small plate" menu, make it affordable enough that people can order multiple items. I couldn't afford an entree so I got two small plate items. That with my drink was nearly $50. Overall I liked this place and would love to come back, but I know I would have to save up to do so, and I feel other places in Bham offer more food for the money read more

Everything about this place was excellent! A couple of friends and I decided to try it before a night out in Bham. It ended up raining hard when we were ready to leave so we stayed and got more drinks at the bar. They change out their menu often to where the foodies can try new things because less is more -- a superb concept that I always believe in. The place is super cute, with rich greens, gold, and other cool colors as decor. The hostess was super friendly and got us seated swiftly. Tried out Cayo Coco for the first time with our friends and it was great. We made reservations in advance, and when we arrived, we were quickly seated. The customer service was great. We ordered several cocktails, which were all amazing. Very fresh and made with fresh ingredients and housemate syrups. You can definitely tell when cocktails are made with high-quality ingredients. The boa buns were delicious and the Canelli (I think they were Canelli) beans were great. They were cooked with some type of pork fat butter, which added a unique twist on the dish. I cannot try the shrimp ceviche because I'm allergic but my friend said they enjoyed it. Everyone tried each other's main entrées, and we personally loved them all. The only critique I have was my jerk chicken was a little bit on the dry side, but it didn't bother me too much. If it was cooked a few minutes longer it would have been too dry to eat. The flavor was still good and paired well with the sides it was served with. We will definitely be back to dine here in Birmingham! Looking forward to being back soon. It's a super cute place to dine at with friends or for a date night. The establishment is well decorated and aesthetically pleasing.
