Matcha has officially exploded in the United States, and Saikō has clearly tapped into that culture. They have a really fun menu with creative combinations that go way beyond a basic matcha latte, but what really caught my attention was the Hojicha. I'm calling it now: Matcha was the beginning. Hojicha is coming next. Hojicha is roasted Japanese green tea, and it has a completely different flavor profile from matcha. It's smooth, earthy, nutty and almost toasted, without that grassy quality some people associate with matcha. The one I had at Saikō was absolutely delicious. I also love that they're not treating Japanese tea like a trend that needs to be watered down for everyone. There's some real creativity happening with the flavors and combinations, and the menu is interesting enough that I'd want to come back and work my way through it. The location is definitely unconventional, but there's something kind of cool about watching people play pickleball while you're sitting there drinking Japanese tea. One of the workers walked out when they heard the door open and greeted me, but they have a touchpad kiosk to order from so I ordered there. Another worker came out and they worked on making my drink. I waited a few minutes before it was ready, exploring the small trinkets for sale and claw machine in the back. I ordered a fresh brewed oolong milk tea with almond milk, boba, and pudding at 75% sweetness. I was pleasantly surprised that the tea was strongly brewed and really tasted freshly made! The boba was a good texture. I've had better pudding elsewhere, but I was craving it so it definitely helped satisfy those cravings.
