I listened to the ladies in front so I would know how to order. It's my turn, I say what I want. He looks at me, "do you know how this works"? I admit, NO. He explains, I order, I leave and I eat it at work. From my choices I think it's a good deal. At ate I'm full and I don't break the bank. Good spot. My only complaint is the salad. Amazing deal at lunch!! Huge selection of hot and fresh food (yup, even for a "buffet") and more food than you eat, all for $8 (includes drink; get the tea hot or over ice) The servers will serve your selections from behind the counter, but feel free to snag as much pita and sauces as you like; there are several kinds -mmm garlic - try them all! Not at all what you might expect inside. Atmosphere is a huge plus here, would be perfect for a date: you can sit at regular tables, but it's way more fun to cozy up on pillows on the floor :-) I have only ever eaten Mediterranean food here, which I enjoyed immensely, but they also serve pizza and wings. read more

Wow! The customer service is superb! Fatoush fell a bit flat in flavor, but everything else made up for that one small thing. Sit down on the floors, take your shoes off, sit back relax and sip on some delicious green tea with honey. Our server gave us a complementary hummus. Top notch! Oh the warm pita bread, so divine. A large group of us went at an off time (3pm on a Sunday). Although some of our dishes were good, others were not so much. One person in our party got the kabob beef sandwich and her meet was literally uncut-able with a knife, much less impossible to chew. I was surprised to see that some of the sandwich portions were small, but they are cheap. Someone in our party ordered a side of rice to go with his but it never came. Service was in fact slow and sparse, but it wasn't the worst I've experienced. I had the roasted chicken and it was pretty good although pretty dry. The basmati rice was also decent. Excellent, excellent food for a great price. This place seems like a hybrid counter and waiter service. There's arrows for an area near the front where you can order food at a counter, either for lunch or for take out. When we arrived for dinner we were sat by who I presume to be the owner. Very friendly gentleman. We ordered the hummus as the appetizer and the waiter noted it was a good choice. They boil their own beans and prepare everything fresh, and it sure tasted that way. In fact, next time I go to a party, I might be tempted to swing by here and pick up the hummus to go, then pass it off as my own. Because that's me. The plates were tasty. Schwarma and kebabs were ordered and enjoyed. My kid got the cheese pizza, and even that was better than I expected. Great crust. The only downside was the service. While eager, friendly, and helpful, it was sloooooow. It took our party of four for dinner, from entrance to exit, almost 2 hours. It's probably not like that at lunchtime I'm guessing. Sometimes I get a little frustrated with the service here (they are extremely nice, just slow sometimes), but usually it's because they are just so busy, but once I get my food and take a bite I don't care anymore. The atmosphere here is like being in a different country and is definitely authentic-seeming. That being said, the food is not spectacular or seems to be made from the highest quality ingredients. The hummus was bland and greasy and the chicken shawerma was good but nothing to write home about. The wait staff was very welcoming and friendly and just generally a great bunch of people who really work with you with your order and provide a pleasant experience. There is natural, local and raw honey at the front desk for $10 that's made from bees with a strictly wild flower diet. The waiter said you can tell this by taking the honey and trying to light it on fire with a lighter. If the honey is not tainted by feeding the bees with sugar -- to get them to produce more and sweeter honey faster -- then the honey will not catch on fire or keep the fire burning. Will probably not be back but it was a good and different experience. I would want to like this place more but it just didn't seem as spectacular as people hype it to be. read more

Pizza and Greek/Mediterranean food? works for me! and when they say that they treat you like family, actually, they treat you better than family! our server was attentive yet relaxed, friendly, accommodating and not fake. the pita bread used for the shawermas were way better than what came with the platter we ordered, but no matter because the dolma and baba ghanouj were the best i've had. not too excited about the falafel, hummus was okay. we ordered the greek pizza which had gyro meat, olives and feta (and other stuff) and it tasted delish! not the best pizza in the world, but the toppings hit the spot and while the inner crust was a little thin, the outer crust was just the right thickness-- perfectly crusty and chewy and good for mopping up hummus and dolma. a YES on our Austin hit list. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant for years and the food is always so great! My favorites are the chicken shawarma plate, lemon chicken soup, and any of their pizzas! Everything is very fresh and good portions. The staff is always friendly and speedy. The ONLY thing I think needs improvement is their pita bread - it's a little tough to eat. I went here for the first time recently having no idea what to expect. My husband and I go to China Palace, in the same strip mall there, for Chinese food, and we would always wonder if this place was any good. Finally decided to give it a whirl. THE FOOD: We have gone twice in the last month, and both times we ordered baba ghanoush for an appetizer. It is SPECTACULAR! They serve it warm, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with herbs and kalamata olives. As many others have pointed out, yes, the pita they serve is very flat, not the pillowy variety. I really like it, because it keeps you from filling up so much on bread before your entree comes...and the pita they serve their wraps on IS the pillowy kind, which is good. I think it's cool that they serve such a wide variety of mediterranean/middle eastern dishes. Most places in Austin serve EITHER gyros/wraps or kabobs, not both. This place does the entire spectrum of med/mid east food, including pizzas. Sweet. We have yet to order anything other than wraps for entrees. The first time in, I got the falafel (superb, possibly the best falafel I've ever eaten), and my husband got the Koufta wrap. He said it was great. The second time in, I got the gyro (delish), and I already forgot what my husband ordered, even though it was only last weekend that we were there. On this visit, I also ordered a piece of the cream filled baklava for dessert. It was THE best piece of baklava I've ever tasted. The cream is like a rose-water infused cream, and the top is sprinkled with what appeared to be crushed pistachios and cardamom. To die for. THE SERVICE....is weird, but not horrible. They are kind of friendly. Depending on whether you go at lunch or dinner, you will either get table service, or a strange combination of counter and table service (i.e., you order your entire meal and pay at the counter, and then they bring it out one course at a time). Honestly, I have been so happy about what I was eating both times, I really didn't care that the service was a bit off-putting. Also, both times I've gone in, it was really warm in there...as in, I don't think they were running the A/C. It was around 85 or so degrees, and they had big industrial fans placed around the restaurant. That's pretty chintzy of them, but again, I love the food enough to keep going back. Best Greek food in Austin. I have been searching and yes, Pheonicia is great too but this place has it all. There's hookah if you're interested. There is a buffett (ca-ching) and the hummus rivals Tom's Tabooley on the drag. The best part about Arpeggio is the unapologetic Medittereanean kitsch throughout the restaurant, with an emphasis on the mural. The owners of this restaurant have masterfully executed the American dream of owning a restaurant that offers real, authentic flavors with a little bit of interior design cheaziness. Was quite nervous as I was bringing my teen son to lunch and wanted to show off my Yelping skills. He and I were both impressed, to my delight! Sometimes it's important to go with the right expectations... Austin has always had a group of restaurants that cater to the more relaxed student vibe of the town. Arpeggio is one of those types of restaurants. The food is probably best described as "home-style" mediterranean- the kind of food that you would be served when visiting someone's home in the middle east or at a quick lunch place in any number of countries in the mediterranean. For lunch, it offers a buffet style selection of appetizers (mesas/mezes) and well as grilled meat on a skewer (kabob) and spiced meats on a spindle (shawerma). The food is spiced but not too spicy. For vegetarians, there are mesas that do not have meat. It's a shame that Austin doesn't have more variety of middle eastern restaurants. Most of the middle eastern restaurants are very casual places that offer the more basic mediterranean foods that appeal to the american fast food palate. As curry lovers, we could also be Greek food lovers -- and it has become our mission to try all the Greek places around Austin. We checked out Arpeggio Grill a while back thanks to Yelp's reviews. Decor wise -- totally agreed, empty cave-like feel, and a bad choice for a first-date place. A pay up front type of place, but the owner is very nice and pleasant to do business with. Despite the decor, the food was tasty (GET THE GREEK PIZZA omfg the ingredients are so fresh) and we split the Arpeggio Mesa Platter (a plate piled with hummus, baba ghanouj, a dolma, tabbouleh, rice, a couple of falafel medallions, a little of both beef and chicken shawarma, and some pitas. It was so much food, we rolled ourselves home that day. Last weekend, we went back and dragged some friends along to participate in our Greek food craving fancies (we had Greek the weekend before that). Beforehand, I had warned them of not "judging a book by its cover." But I was shocked when we walked in--- They have totally revamped the place! There's a cool mural on one wall and carpeting on the floor. No more random shelves of food that made it feel like a convenience store. A tv in the corner above the once strangely placed fireplace makes the place more homely. Yum! Cheap! Great Service! Enjoyed the dinner special, kind of a buffet style for $9.99 (which includes both self-serve pop and hot tea-all you can drink). The special was a greek salad, your choice of meat and three different sides! Greek salad was really good, had some roasted chicken, hummus, roasted vegetables, and some other things I can't pronounce of spell-but they were really good. More than any of us could finish. Went there to meet another couple and arrived before they did. The staff was so helpful and attentive. They were so friendly and gracious. I think there were about 4 different people waiting on us during that time-just making sure things were good. I was craving a good combo plate of Mediterranean basics and their vegetarian mesa plate was perfect (I added a side of tzatziki since it doesn't come with the plate). The baby ganoush and tzatziki were my favorites. The price was completely reasonable, especially considering I had enough for dinner and lunch the next day. This would make a great plate for friends to share for a healthy, filling dinner. The service was excellent & friendly. I am happy that I was finally able to get here. After months of scanning my bookmarks and skipping Arpeggio every time, I decided that today was the day. Excellent service right when we walked in. Sat down and ordered right away since we were starving. We ordered a hummus, a gyro plate, and the chicken shawerma. The hummus was flavorful but I want a creamier texture from my garbanzo beans. Definitely worth it but I wanted more. The gyro plate was definitely good. I'm glad to see it wasn't pre cooked, dry meatloaf that was soaking in oil for "more flavor." The sides were excellent as well. The chicken shawerma though was the best part of the meal. Definitely lots of flavor and spice. The chicken stayed moist through every bite. I think we dropped maybe $24 for everything. I would definitely hit this place up again and try some of items from the pictures. Arpeggio Grill 'Tis a shame, because the Greek vegetarian food deserves 4.5 stars. Itemized deductions: 30 minutes to receive an appetizer is wrong. Another 15 minutes 'til the entree - that's only acceptable if the ambience makes up for it, which it doesn't. The dining room was only 1/3 full on a Saturday night, and they didn't seem particularly under-staffed. Talk about slow service! Empty drinks for 10 minutes?!? Clearly done eating for another 10 before asking about desserts?!? Then the waiter never even came for my credit card, so I scrounged cash and gave him the 4¢ tip he deserved. The pizza crust was entirely mushy and uncooked. Putting more than a couple kinds of veggies on a pizza means you need a different dough recipe to allow for the moisture, and they don't have it right. Eggplant as a topping sounded intriguing, but come on - you''ve gotta cook that stuff separately first. They could learn from Home Slice. LH's roasted chicken looked intricate - entirely covered in rice (which turned out to be overly oily and covering chicken that was entirely dark meat.) The prices are really fair - and there is some real promise in the menu and quality of preparation, but their scope is too ambitious. As I mentioned, I really loved the "Vegetarian Mese" - tasty falafel, good sit-down-quality hummus and baba ganouj and dolmas and tabouleh. Only come here if you're jonesing for a step up from Phoenicia's offerings and you have a bunch of time to kill. read more

I have been craving Mediterranean food since I moved to Austin from NYC. I will openly say now that I am slightly biased just based on what I used to eat back home. However, I know Austin is HUGE on food, so I'm starting my Yelping journey in Austin with an open mind! I absolutely loved this place. I legitimately teared up because it reminded me of home and I've had a hard time adjusting to Austin. The food is authentic and delicious. The decor is cute--they have regular seating and a section that is traditional floor seating! Our waiter was wearing a yellow shirt, young guy, very polite attentive and made conversation. Loved his service! All the other workers were very friendly as well and seem to know their regulars (lots of conversation going on just like you were visiting a family home). Super cozy. I'm anemic so I get cold super super easily. I brought a sweater with me, as I always do, and I DIDN'T HAVE TO WEAR IT. This was amazing as I was able to enjoy my time here in comfort whereas in most places I'm focused on how cold I am. My bf gets hot incredibly easily and he also felt comfortable--so it's definitely not hot either. (: The service is excellent, the food is delicious, the environment is welcoming--this place was a great find! My only critiques: I ordered the chicken kebab plate. Overall fabulous. I do wish the chicken had a little more seasoning, it was just a tad bland for my taste, but still great nonetheless. The tzatziki sauce is to die for, I would order jars of it if I could. The portions were huge--definitely a plus. Though, there were a few pieces of chicken I had that were just a tad chewy and a tiny bit on the dry side. I would really hope meats are fresh, but I grew up in the restaurant industry so I understand if at times meats need to be frozen. This restaurant uses Grubhub as a delivery option. I tried that today and waited one hour to find out that my order would be delivered an additional 1 and a half hours later. So, I hangrily cancelled the order, which is a hullabaloo in itself. The business did call and tell me my order was ready 15 minutes after I ordered it. So, while I appreciate the call, there's some problems with that. They likely would send my food, that they had sitting there (meat) for almost 2 hours when the driver finally decided to show up to bring it. That could make me sick! They also contract with Grubhub. The person who left a message suggested I use a different company next time. Clearly true, and if they know that, why join up with them??? The food here is amazing and very affordable. The staff is super nice and helpful. Although you order at the counter, they bring you your food. They also checked on us a few times while we were eating. My boyfriend and I had half a dozen dolmas, a falafel "sandwich" (actually a pita), and the arpeggio roasted chicken. We were hungry. But we ended up with a ton of food, more than we could eat. All that and two drinks cost us under $20. The falafel was really good. The hummus was delicious, though creamer than I've had before. The chicken was to die for. It fell off the bone, and came covered in rice. Other yelp reviews I read made me suspicious of the premises. However, the place, while bare bones, was not dark or cave-like. We would definitely like to go back and try the pizza and other dishes-- as well as pursue the small grocery section. I want to give this place 5 starts, but the serivce was horrible tonight. I WILL go back and give them another chance, however, because the food was outstanding. We were there for 2 hours, and finally got our drinks 5 minutes before we finished eating. The table next to us got their drinks, but nothing else, and ended up walking out. However, when we went to the register to pay, we discovered that the kitchen is TINY, and since the dining room was PACKED, no wonder it was taking so long. Apparently, they got a good write-up in the Chronicle 2 days ago and were way understaffed for the onslaught of business that followed. To back up the "unprepared" excuse, they actually ran out of glasses and silverware and had to serve us drinks out of a bottle. The gyro plate was awesome, and the shish kabb mix plate was also good. The babaganoush was very tasty! We took a large piece of pistachio baklava (with a cream center) to go, and it was WONDERFUL. The service level was bad, but I felt sorry for them. Hey Arpeggio! I have got to ask this question. Why is a Greek restaurant using an Italian word? And what do "notes are played in rapid succession rather than simultaneously" have to do with food? Okay. Now that that is out of the way, on to your food. Wait. First I want to address the decor. You've taken some hits from my fellow Yelpers on your decor. I am not sure why. I find the murals and lamps to be right in line with a small out-of-the way Greek place. You are a bit hard to find. I'll give them that one. But so worth the drive from 78741! We went on a Sunday. We were greeted immediately by a very nice young man whose name started with an R. Sorry, but I've eaten since then and can't remember! We didn't order any appetizers but went straight to the food. My companion had the gyro plate while I had the chicken shwarma. MMM good! We both got salads with house dressing. Not sure about the complaint about no feta in one review. We got feta. And black olives. And peppers. Oh yeah. The salad was good. My only grief was in the large pieces of lettuce. I am not a hippopotamus. I don't like my lettuce whole. My chicken was delicious. The rice that it came with was just the right amount of dry over moist. My companion enjoyed his gyro plate. The hummus was perfection--very smooth with a great flavor. Minor quibble here is that we did need more Tzatziki sauce. The pita was fresh as well. All in all, this was a good experience that we both agreed we would repeat. Our server even told us about their carry-out service and how we could call ahead so the pizza would be ready when we got there. How he knew we loved pizza is a mystery. Summary: come here for the falafel and gyro, and keep coming back for the outstanding service. For posh travelers, the location is not in the most ritzy part of town, but well worth visiting. On to the food: Salad - pretty standard fare, the vinegar-based dressing was good. Falafel - solid execution. Great flavor, crispy outside, soft inside, served hot, and sized right. Rice - hope you like butter! If you're a calorie counter, it may require some extra workout time, but it tastes great. Chicken - I'm used to mediterranean chicken being dry, but Arpeggios didn't have the flavor to compensate. And when I had the gyro meat, I didn't come back to the chicken. Gyro - the highlight of the meal. It's as good as everyone says. It is seasoned well, reasonably tender, and leaves you wanting more (especially when paired with the yogurt). Pita bread - it is more thinner and drier than other places, but will keep carb watchers happy and still tastes good. Baklava - skip the creme filled and go with the traditional. It's pretty good. Service - I had a waiter named Ihab, and he is one of the best waiters I've had anywhere. So, a certain OTHER internet site has recently listed Austin as a pizza destination city, with which I most heartily disagree. HOWEVER, if you are looking for a mighty tasty pie while you're in this no-nothing town, the place you need to go to is Arpeggio. Take it from me: I have tasted the best in New York, Chicago, Montreal, and even the #1 Pizza City in America, San Diego. But back to the 'za! Get the 30-inch pie, as others have mentioned. Peep the pic: it is truly enormous. You may have to turn it sideways just to fit it through your front door. But this isn't just a big pizza, it's also a well-made pie with quality ingredients at a crazy low price ($25?!). Lots of stretchy mozzarella, fresh toppings, and meaty goodness. They only deliver to a limited radius around the restaurant, but it's worth it to call in your order and drive over to pick up the best (kept) pizza (secret) in town. Arpeggio is my go-to place for Greek food in Austin! I have been coming here for dinner every so often for years now, because the service is super friendly and (more importantly) the food never disappoints. I usually get one of the Mesa platters, since it has a bit of everything such as falafel, hummus, dolmas, tabouleh, baba Ghanouj, and shawarma. The hot tea with a huge side of delicious honey could be dessert in and of itself, but I recommend you save room for the melt-in-your-mouth baklava. I haven't tried the wings or huge pizzas yet, as I am a sucker for the more healthy, refreshing options. Those pizzas look impressive though. Plus, the portions are huge no matter what you try. I am actually quite surprised how NO ONE has ever told me about this place. Me and my friend had to yelp mediterranean, and this was the first to come up! Once again (like Yahala - hookah lounge next door), we came here two nights in a row. I don't eat pork, and my friend only eats halal. We were BEYOND happy when we could have pizza with all the meat we wanted ;) The service is amazing. Our first night we had a young guy (his name rhymes with pecan), who was very polite and attentive. The second night we had an older guy, who was just as sweet! Its a family owned restaurant, and they do an awesome job running it! especially short staffed. Its also nice to know, they can take any personality and jokes that come at them. Got the lunch special which consisted of chicken shawarma, Greek salad, 3 sides, pita bread, and a drink for $7.95. Added a piece of baklava for a little over a dollar. For around 10 bucks I got a massive amount of food. The chicken shawarma was perfectly cooked with great flavor. Put a little olive oil on the hummus and it tasted great. The falafel ball is a must have as well. Nice bit of spice. Dipped it in the salad dressing and almost had to buy a few more. The chicken and rice was a little spicy for me but had good overall flavor. The icing on the cake was the baklava. Now I'm no baklava king, but I've been around the block. This is probably the best baklava I've ever had. It wasn't overly sticky or dry like some place manage to make them. The crust was nice and crunchy. I was highly impressed. Had Dr. Pepper to drink. 23 flavors of awesomeness and all that. Seating inside was good and well spaced. There were a couple of seating area with couches and pillows. Worth trying with a group of friends looking for a relaxing place to eat. Parking was easy to find due to arriving before the lunch rush. The place got packed right after I sat down so I lucked out. This is one my favorite go-to's when I get off work early...or actually have a day off!!! Wowzers, better than ever!! I like the LUNCH SPECIAL (7.95 - 10.95) includes choice of meat, Greek salad, 3 sides and drink. Whoa dude...awesome right? Plus they make the biggest pizza in town. Family owned and ran. Really nice people who own this place, a true Austin gem. No Mediterranean fusion here. Come and get it!!! read more

Delicious food! Great seating! I love the wings here! Most likely the best wings in town! I have also tried the GIANT pizza and man, that was amazing. There were four of us guys there and we couldn't even finish the whole pizza. That pizza was HUGE. I haven't been to their other location, but I bet it's gonna be good. Only drawback: you have to wait a bit to get your order. I usually order before in hand, so by the time I get there, it's ready! read more

We showed up just after lunch ended. The restaurant was quiet, which was nice, the place is wonderfully decorated, we sat at the regular tables, but they had pillows and shorter tables to the right where you can sit on the floor, we're trying that next time. We had the dolmas, lentil and lemon chicken soup (large chunks of vegetables) and hummus to start. Didn't realize how much food there was until we were halfway through the starters. This is a great place. The food really tastes very fresh and high in quality. The spicy chutney is great - ask for some and mix it with tzatziki to give your gyro a little bit more flavor and spicy kick! Anyone I know who lives close enough I've recommend this place to and they all were very pleased! My 2 year old loves the gyro meat. I just order her a side of it and she goes to town! She's very picky when we eat out so it was great we found something she enjoys here with some naan! The tea is very good, and I don't even like or drink tea! Be sure to try it, you'll be impressed!
