How is this place getting 5 stars when they don't ever answer their phone nor are they actually open the hours that both their website and their voice mail say they are open?!?!?!?! Here I am sitting outside their shop at 4:45 on a Tuesday when they are supposed to be open until 7pm and the place is closed up tight, no lights, nothing. I wouldn't even give them one star, but it's the minimum required by Yelp.

My daughter and I love coming here. Always clean and friendly. Great selection. We will keep coming back.

Art and Clay Studio is just about as cozy and fun (especially for kids) as it gets in the "paint your own clay" department. We've tried other such studios before, but A&C is the most inviting we've found. It's rather small inside but has never seemed cramped. And the selection of molds to paint is good. They even have a little area in back with a potter's wheel to make your own clay project (you have to take a class first, unless you can demonstrate you know what you're doing). The owner is kind and attentive, and always quick to help out with a technique, give advice on color, and to give a heart-felt compliment to a finished project. My daughter has been here a number of times, often staying for a couple hours and couldn't be happier. She's also done a couple of wheel projects (she learned the wheel in High School) and never fails to have a wonderful time. Great little place if you're into clay projects.... 5-Stars all the way. As you walk across the street to this building that looks more like a freight warehouse you wonder am I in the right spot? Yes you are, walk up the steps and turn left and you immediately see the studio. Now this was a date day for my wife and I and have never done this before. The staff were supper friendly and were there to give advice, but let you do your own thing. They have lots of pieces to choose from, all prices are in the bottom of the pieces. We selected our pieces and went to work, so how I missed the whole part of "you need a base coat before painting" and I just started to paint. My wife on the other hand listened to the instructions and followed them.. her pieces were painted well, mine looked like my 3 year old grandson painted it. Now we wait for them to be fired in the kiln which takes about 1-2 weeks )depending on how busy they are) to get it back... So for 3 pieces ran about $114ish plus tip. From what the staff states is that it gets busy on the weekends, we arrived at 11:05 and left at around 3ish...

Here is what happened: One of the first interview questions that was asked was around kicking people out that didnt agree with their political opinions. Next, the white women discussed blood/moon rituals, and was scolded by the other owner to stop. It was unprofessional and did not highlight their dynamic in a positive light. I was then asked to teach someone who had never thrown before, the owner, which I wasnt Informed of, or I would have prepared. The expectation to teach a surprise lesson was incredibly inequitable and a horrible interview practice. The fact that she didnt know how to pull was shocking, as this is a basic technique in ceramics. She didnt inform me that this was a skill she needed to be taught. Unfortunately, all the owners now how to do is turn a kiln off and on. Everyone who purchases a peice is lucky that the glazes stick. I went home feeling pretty terrible about the experience. When I called to ask about the status of the position I was told that they chose someone with more experience and a degree. Y'all i have a masters degree in ceramics and have taught high school ceramics for 10 years. Linda then admitted she didnt really know why they went with another canidate and offered a sales position which i declined. Overall incredibly disrespectful, inequitable, and unprofessional.

She has a genuine love for her artisanal work and it mirrors in the way she treats her students. Thank you for such a wonderful representation of small businesses in Tacoma. It's located in a very cute portable surrounded by other businesses, it reminds me of a little village. She painted me a planter pot and painted half of it in two colors so that I can switch the sides, so creative. We were there for almost 3.5 hrs, never felt rushed or anything like that. When you arrive, the staff will walk you through with the process and will ask that you pick out the pieces that you would like to paint. Then, when you're done, they will show you the process and off to painting you go! It takes about 2 weeks to get the pieces back, so if you're in a hurry, you might want to plan accordingly. They do not charge for studio fees like other places, the price is already incorporated into the pieces and I appreciate that. I would totally recommend this place.

The signage can be a little confusing sometimes, but the employees are super helpful and kind with answering questions. The only down side is that during my most recent trip I was told I needed to wait two weeks for my piece to be fired. In the past and at other places I've only ever had to wait a week, but I love supporting a local place and I love that they have so much business.

The staff was friendly and helped us understand the process of picking out a piece and painting it. There are also instructions on the wall on the steps you need to take to decorate your piece and there are labels everywhere to make sure you know what you're doing. When you first walk in, you pick a piece of pottery out to decorate/paint. There are a ton of items to select from including bowls, mugs figurines, and plates. I picked a little bowl to paint and pulled up my Pinterest board for inspiration. I went to go pick out my colors and they all had swatches on them with 1-3 coats of paint to show you how it looks when fired. They also have precision tip paint bottles (in the same selection as the regular paint) for little details and stamps. They provide you with assortment of paint brushes, decorated pieces for inspiration and different foam applicators for ombre looks. They also give you ceramic palettes and a water mug to clean off your paintbrushes. After you're done with decorating, you clean up your items and put them in the correct compartments for the staff to wash. Then you pay and they tell you when you can pick it up (usually within a week). There was only one staff member when we were there, but she was super helpful and kind. As we left around 6 PM on Friday, it got very busy.
