Two stars for barely mentioning Betty Reid Soskin when she has been such a big part of completing the Rosie story by including the Black perspective of the Richmond shipyards experience during WW2. Even the Park Officers working at the museum reception seemed turned off regarding our interest in her story. (I'm really sad that I didn't visit before her retirement in 2022, but thankful for YouTube videos of her lectures.) Five stars for being such an interesting taste of the past and doing it in such a way that the visit didn't feel rushed. The exhibits and artifacts were broad and interesting. It was great to see how women played such and important part of our wartime manufacturing history. Five stars for being free... with free parking, if you can figure out that you have to go through the gate guard and around the corner to the right to the very, very small parking lot located behind the entrance of the museum.

If someone would've told me 20 years ago that I'd ever have an interest in history I'd have…read morescoffed, so certain was I that "History", as presented in grades 1 through 12 could ever be fascinating to anyone. But if you're lucky, life is long, you grow, you change, and things you once slept through are suddenly fascinating. Richmond Museum of History is suddenly fascinating. In a former Carnegie Library, circa 1910, the compact Richmond Museum is crammed full of fascinating finds. It helps that Richmond has an utterly compelling history: After the Gold Rush (1848-1850), the most dramatic migration to the Bay Area occurred in WWII, when high-paying shipyard jobs brought hundreds of thousands of people to the area. The most explosive growth happened in Richmond, home of the Kaiser shipyards. Within a three-year period beginning in 1940, Richmond's population quadrupled to a whopping 93,000+ residents. The Richmond Museum of History houses extensive photos and memorabilia about the town - and people - not just from this period but from the period preceding it as well. The sheer volume of interesting old photos they have is amazing and they only have room to display a fraction of their cache. The space is crowded and dusty and compelling. Combined with their changing exhibit (currently: Jews of Richmond), it took me upwards of two hours to make my way methodically through the place, then I spent a little longer before exiting. A make-shift gift shop near the entrance/exit has hand knit caps, mittens, and scarves priced so reasonably that you should make a trip here just to get yourself outfitted for the next storm. The Richmond Museum of History is a fascinating, under-the-radar, offbeat attraction that should be a must-see for anyone interested in that sort of thing and/or local history. They've been blessed with an exceptional amount of archival material and it deserves to be viewed. Tickets run $5 ($3 for seniors) but free tickets can be obtained in advance from your library's Discover & Go site. Ample street parking can be had out front. Go. It's really interesting.

Admission is free for kids (up to age 16) and $5 for adults. They accept cash or credit card payments. The workers were friendly, and we were free to explore at our own pace. This model railroad display was amazing, two floors of detailed scenery and miniature trains, buses, and cable cars moving along the tracks. Loved seeing the setup for different cities in the east bay, old companies and factories, and various landmarks and bridges, representation from the 1940's to today. A diverse range of scenes in the exhibit included people camping, fishing, and boating, emergency vehicles and rescues, a movie theater, casino, Starbucks Coffee, C&H Sugar, the city of Sacramento (including the CA State Capitol building), and the China Wall at Donner Pass, part of the Central Pacific Railroad. There was even an entire amusement park with a ferris wheel, carousel, various carnival rides, and colorful blinking lights. More than enough to keep visitors engaged. They offer a scavenger hunt too. This may be the largest model railroad exhibit I've ever been to. It wasn't too crowded, and obviously the place is family-friendly. Parking was free and easy out front. I was truly impressed with this train show, and with the changing themes and designs throughout the year, I wouldn't hesitate to return for another open house event.

Daniel Hunter invited my Honey to his art opening. They are old colleges. I was thrilled. I've…read morenever been to Benicia. When we arrived I was surprised how quaint Benicia was and there huge art community. It turns out that we arrived for there 2nd Saturday Art Walk. I had no idea they still existed. I loved the environment and people. They were all so nice. Our first stop was Gallery 621. We lucked out at finding a parking spot a little over a block away. The place was packed. The gallery is a co-op gallery. Every member takes turns manning the gallery and they all pay in to show there art. They had a good collection of art work and a few statues. The galley was really buzzing. The few people I talked to either were artists or people who followed the artists. I talked to another couple and they drive in once a year to see Daniel's shows. He has quite a following. His work has evolved over the years. This show was wax and spray paint and many layers. Below you can see page 3. We are now proud owners of page 3. Helen was still so welcoming even after we 4 strangers popped in without an appointment. To top it off, we were all new to the process of pottery painting. Helen was so patient and helpful that it made all the difference in the world. And don't get me started on the value....it is so inexpensive! There is no way that she is running this place with any profit. It's clearly a labor of love for her! We had a fantastic experience and were grateful that Helen was so accommodating. She also hosts Paint Nites so we will definitely schedule that in the future with her! She's a gem and Benicia (and the surrounding areas) is lucky to have her!!!
