Talacona Gallery and Studio - Fine Art Gallery in Benicia by Artist Maria Talacona. Her work has been celebrated for over 20 years.

Maria Talacona is an amazing artist. Her studio in Benicia on Columbus Parkway was always my…read morefavorite. She went to Sonoma for many years where there was a greater demand for fine art but now she is back to Benicia on First Street. Her work is wall to wall amazing and honestly, I have so many of her pieces and I actually just bought another piece that I am waiting to be framed. I always tell her that I can't think of anything else I would want on my walls. I have a lot of art from Jim Buckles, Eyvind Earle, and Caroline Young but I must confess I have more works by Maria Talacona than any other artist. Her works are so near and dear to my heart because she is local and I know her so well. She mainly does fine art commissions for the Napa Valley Wine Community but here in Benicia, she is well known for her florals, grapes, and olives. At her studio downtown, she has a wonderful kitchen line with plates, towels and oven mitts that were in all the stores like Kohls, Target, and Walmart. She has won many awards but she gives back to the community by teaching Paint Nights on Friday Nights from 6 pm to 9 pm. I went to her Friday night class and it was super fun and I did really well. She does a Family Fun watercolor workshop three Saturdays a month (she is closed the 2nd Saturday of each month). They are super affordable as well. Anyway, I am her number one fan. Anyway, I hope Maria captured all I had to say when I wrote a testimonial for her website but also I just had to share again how I feel about her awesome work.

When we arrived I was surprised how quaint Benicia was and there huge art community. It turns out that we arrived for there 2nd Saturday Art Walk. I had no idea they still existed. I loved the environment and people. They were all so nice. Our first stop was Gallery 621. We lucked out at finding a parking spot a little over a block away. The place was packed. The gallery is a co-op gallery. Every member takes turns manning the gallery and they all pay in to show there art. They had a good collection of art work and a few statues. The galley was really buzzing. The few people I talked to either were artists or people who followed the artists. I talked to another couple and they drive in once a year to see Daniel's shows. He has quite a following. His work has evolved over the years. This show was wax and spray paint and many layers. Below you can see page 3. We are now proud owners of page 3. Honey is on the left and Daniel on the right. I love Daniel's shirt.

The next time you are in town..stop in and experience their art displays, who knows you may find a piece or two that you would love to buy and take home with you!!

Amazing gallery filled with art from local artists! My husband and I wandered in here during the…read moreweekly farmers market to check out a sale they were having. We weren't expecting to buy anything since we were in the middle of shopping for vegetables, but we were pleasantly mistaken. We saw one particular painting hanging on the wall and knew that it would be perfect for a big empty wall in our house - we've been passively looking for some art to hang there for months, and this piece spoke to us! For an original piece on canvas, the price was very reasonable. The artist is Mimi Wirth - a woman local to Martinez which makes the painting even cooler. The painting itself was quite large but we managed to fit it in our 2 door Honda with some interesting maneuvering, and after even more clever choices involving a ladder on a staircase, it's now on our wall. OSHA would not be pleased by any of those choices, but we are very happy with the painting and will be back to peruse this gallery regularly!

My review has to do with the interactions, or lack thereof, of the artists who staff this gallery. I walk in here frequently, as I regularly shop the farmers market on Sundays and this gallery is right next to it. The staff here tend to interact in a friendlier manner with the older, white patrons. This is not a one-time occurrence but a regular thing, so regular in fact that my 12-year old commented on it. Perhaps it's because they think we're not going to purchase anything, but it is a major turnoff. I also think they could add some diversity to the list of artists who display their work here. This won't stop me from frequenting this gallery when I'm in the area, but something to keep in mind if you've never been here before or are not familiar with the area.
