I visited this salon yesterday as a "hair model," for textured/curly hair (the nice way of saying ethnic hair). My stylist was Seven. She is very nice, very thorough, and seems to care a lot about hair care. I really admired Seven's ambition to learn about and style ethnic (specifically African American) hair. It's no easy task, especially if your a natural head like me, to complete while just starting out. I didn't expect a miracle, however, I was very pleasantly surprised that my hair wasn't burnt, for the most part it was straight and given style. As someone who has had my share of salons, I think this one was quite nice. I'd love to go back and let Seven become my stylist once she becomes more versed with doing African American hair. read more

I want to start by saying I am a man, not a miser but not lavish by any means either. That being said; I am writing this review for men and men only (or women planning on sending a man to Art & Science for his next cut). I have no opinion good or bad about A&S as a establishment for women. Women generally have longer hair which I am guessing requires more detail than my average Joe haircut and maybe the good folks at A&S are the Cats Pajamas at dye jobs... I'm used to paying $10 to $20 for a hair cut. I kind of freak out inside my head when the price is twenty dollars and quietly write the place off as a "never going there again". I generally get the same cut every three weeks or so. Not hard. I sit down I say "make it shorter" They giggle and say "okay, how short?" I say "I don't know about this much" and then hold up my hand with my thumb and index finger extended making a gesture of maybe a half inch or so. And that is that. I don't know what I was thinking going to A&S. I am so NOT the type of guy that would go here. $52 + tip......... ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS? Never again read more

Isobel, aka Christina, is back at Art + Science. Since she styled my hair for 3-4 years before she left, I was able to get an appointment with her. Of course, she did a great job and was accommodating since I ended up being about 10 minutes late. She is a great listener and always gives good advice about what would look good on a person's face. She mostly does barbershop stuff now, so I will be bringing my boyfriend in for a straight razor shave sometime soon. read more

Also, both people who I had work done by were super nice. Sometimes you go and get your hair done by someone new, and it feels awkward, but not at all. I love this place. I have tried all the usual Men's haircut outfits around Chicago, paid anywhere from $15 to $75 in search of a guaranteed great cut every time I sat down in the chair. Needless to say, that was a challenge. Several years ago I was lucky enough one day to stumble upon Katie who now works in Art + Science's barbershop division. I followed her from a less expensive men's only haircut place to Art + Science and happily pay the small up charge as the venue itself is super clean, fun and friendly. This review is for hair color. Art + Science is the second salon I tried after moving to Chicago in 2015. I have found my spot. It's everything a quality salon should be. After scouring Yelp reviews and checking out websites, I decided to give Art + Science a try. It is evident from their thoughtfully designed website, hip and trendy photos and Yelp reviews that a high level of service and professionalism could be expected. I was not disappointed! I booked an appointment with Susan, the color director, and for a first time appointment, no prior relationship, the chemistry was great. She is an extremely talented and competent colorist. Jamie who is apprenticing also was very polite and professional and did a great job on my rinse and style. The salon offers a variety of high-quality professional products. The reception/scheduling staff is extremely attentive and friendly. Overall my experience was outstanding. I highly recommend Art + Science color service. read more

Tara is the coolest hairstylist ever. Seriously. Not only did she turn my un-cool long bob into a fantastic, modern cut, but she is cool as hell to talk too. The space itself is ok - nothing great - trying a little TOO hard to be hip. But damn if they don't do great work. Plus, the fact that they trim my bangs for free (or would if I weren't too flipping lazy to go in) makes them my favorite salon in Chicago. read more

I've passed by Art + Science for quite awhile now and from the outside looking in, figured I would have no interest in what was going on inside. My hair is an amalgamation of Asian genes - namely it's course and full, far more cumbersome to work with than a person with thinner hair. As a result, I tend to toss it to a swoop and let it be (though I often get labeled by a certain three letter subcultural name - a price to pay for convenience I suppose). Those genetics combined with my dad's side of the family being almost entirely made up of hair dressers and my having atleast nine million ex girlfriends who were cosmetologists - well, I was cool with doing it punk rock style with someone coming over to our house and just cutting it in the living room or something. My criteria isn't high - choppy and longish, no big deal right? I was lured into Art + Science after corresponding with Guy over a cut he was looking to work on. Over email I described what I was looking for (take an inch or so off and remove a bunch of excess off the top to increase volume) to which he replied that such a cut was what he was looking for before confirming the appointment. My reasoning for finally going to a higher end salon for my hair was due to the experimental arrangement of the affair - on Mondays, Art + Science have class. Up and coming stylists scout for willing guinea pigs to work on and the cut is free in exchange. Not the hugest risk right? Upon walking into the shop, there was a bit of confusion and I waited until Guy came over and informed me that he had actually been looking to do a more complex bob cut for a female. In an odd snafu, he had assumed I was another gender due to the spelling of my name. No harm, no foul, it's happened a number of times before in the past - this isn't a new occurrence for me. He went on to explain that he could still do the cut I was looking for due to its relative similarity to the original cut he was looking to do anyway. I apologized profusely for the mix up and I'm pretty sure that while he replied with phrasings of things being okay, he was actually somewhat irked - he of course never expressed it, but if I were in his position, I imagine I wouldn't be the happiest with such an inconvenience either. After giving my hair the initial shampoo, he began to get down to the cut. Utilizing a razor to take off alot of the edges and remove a majority of the excess, he seemed to have a bit of an issue with the back (even going so far as to consult with his instructor on the matter several times). As time went on though, the cut began to gel and the final product came out pretty spectacular. The elements of shagginess and choppiness were retained but were now fused with a more cohesive sense of order. Guy's style of working is professional and on point and his quick conversations with his instructor showed a blatantly high standard in terms of attention to detail. I would imagine this is why Art + Science has the reputation it does - they take this seriously and aim for perfection. After asking me what I thought of the final cut, we made arrangements to do another cut within the next two months. As of this writing, I'm extremely happy with Guy's professionalism (especially in terms of the mix up that happened from the off set) and the only reason why I'm not doing four full stars is because I would like to see how consistent the cuts remain in the future. As for now though, there's no where else in the neighborhood I'd rather go. For now atleast, the living room hair cutting sessions have been retired! read more

Tara has been cutting my hair at A +S since 2005, and I can't imagine going to anyone else. There have been few times that I have experimented with other stylists, but I always come running back to her -usually ashamed :( Tara has given me a wide range of haircuts and that is very impressive considering how thick and coarse my hair is. I'm currently sporting a short french bob with one side shaved underneath. It might sound a little extreme, but I love it and get compliments all the time. Actually right after Tara first shaved the side of my head, I was stopped by the photographer of Chicago Street Style, and she featured me (and my hair!) on her blog and refinery 29 -a true testament to Tara's sick ass skills! Oh, and I've even referred my sister to Tara, and that's a huge deal because she doesn't trust ANYONE with her hair and rarely gets her hair cut at all. My sister continues to make appointments with Tara for her tri-annual haircut :) But best of all, she's one of the sweetest people I've ever met. Truly a kind person and soooo easy to work with. Needless to say, ya'll need to pay Tara a visit at A + S...like now! read more

This is, without a doubt, THE BEST SALON EVER!!! Susan is the most amazing colorist I've ever encountered. She makes going to the salon feel as though I'm going to grab a glass of wine after work with a friend, it just so happens that I get to look fabulous and fresh once I leave. She has given me the most vibrant, beautiful red hair that I think I've been trying to achieve my whole life. Luckily, she loves reds, so it's always fun and exciting for us both when I come in. The hardest part about moving to San Diego was leaving her. Luckily, I still plan to visit home and every visit WILL include a trip to her chair. Guy has always given me the perfect hair cuts and advice while growing my hair out. I was so sick of getting bad hair cuts that I actually hadn't got my hair cut for about a year before I relaxed enough to let Guy take a scissor to my locks. He is amazing!! For the first time, I sit down to get my hair cut and I'm not nervous or scared. He always knows exactly what I want and explains what he's going to do so well. Communication is key and he's got it! So thankful he was able to whip my hair back into shape. Everyone should go to this salon and see Susan and Guy! :) read more

I have been on the lookout for a good stylist for the last THREE YEARS! I have tried many many places and it resulted in pure hatred towards all the salons. Thank god i decided to give art + science a try! Jessica cut my hair and honestly I don't remember it looking as good as it does now. She was super helpful, informative and fun to talk to. I am totally coming back. I took my mom with me as well- she was in the same situation as me- Seven did her hair and she keeps praising the haircut everyday. I'm giving them 4 out of 5 only because of the receptionist- she seems like she's bored with her life- never looked up from her computer to ask if we need any help when we walked in, never offered us anything to drink. I had my hair cut by Seven a few weeks ago, and then again a few days ago for minor modifications. I went in knowing I wanted a small part of one side to be cut real short...but thats all I knew. I showed Seven a picture of the general idea and she went straight to work, giving me a great cut that eased me into my new look. It was more conservative than what I showed her, but we decided to stay conservative and see how I would feel with it for a few days. After feeling great with the haircut and deciding I wanted more, I came in and she cut a bit more (and it looked even better!). Even though I took up a good amount of time, I was still not charged under their "free-trims" policy. She is so friendly and easy going, and absolutely knows what she is doing. The general staff at the salon was also really helpful and friendly as well. Good coffee too! Highly recommended!!!! read more

I needed a new hair stylist after moving to Chicago, and I was pretty nervous about making the switch (Tabatha's Salon Takeover has left me very skeptical about the level of quality/professionalism I should expect). So, I am happy to report that I have been returning to Tara's chair every 8 weeks for the past 7 months. She does a great job and makes easy small talk. Perks: they offer complementary water/coffee/wine and always have the most recent magazines for reading :) I didn't give 5 stars because I've never had an appointment start on time--usually 15 minutes behind schedule. read more

I've been pretty negligent in the past when it came to my hair. I had just let it grow and grow, and I'd just tie it back. I'd only get it cut when it was absolutely necessary (twin sister's wedding, etc). For a number of different reasons, I decided that it was time for a change. I don't know how to explain it, but there's something about how a really good haircut really changes a man and makes anything seem possible. I got exactly that kind of haircut from Christina at Art + Science in Wicker Park. When we arrived, we were promptly served beverages, coffee for me and wine for my girlfriend. I visited the restroom, and by the time I returned, Christina had been chatting with my girlfriend and already had an idea of what kind of cut I was thinking about (that makes my girlfriend sound kind of controlling, she's not, we had looked at some hairstyle pictures prior to the appointment and agreed on ones we liked). To be clear, this haircut was a complete overhaul. It's not like it was just a trim or as if I walked in just looking to go back to something I had done before. I'm pretty certain that only a particularly skilled stylist could have pulled it off. All I know is that I lost TONS of hair (it was longer than my girlfriend's, for sure), and that the result was pretty fantastic- fashionable and sophisticated. Bonus: Nice salon, great design aesthetic, great line of hair products, good prices, friendly people and great service, and the hot steam towels on my face during the shampoo was pretty nice. read more

Wow what a great men's haircut from Christina! A dear friend recommended her the other day. I was pleasantly surprised to learn (while my hair was being cut) that she was one of a few women to attend a barber college in San Diego, I never new this existed. It was obvious that her schooling was very effective. Unlike Floyd's or one of those national chains she actually uses scissors which results in a styled cut. If you want a buzz cut either go to those national chains or buy a "Flo Be" system on the Home Shopping Network. She is also a pro at a shave or a beard trim. I have gotten my color and cuts done at Art + Science for some time now. I started going because I knew Jo who works at the Evanston location from a previous job. She does an awesome job cutting! I am pretty picky about my cut and she gets what I want every time. She is always professional and meticulous. I don't think I could ever have someone else cut my hair! I would highly recommend her for for detailed hair cuts and mens cuts. I was recommended to see Elvis for color. I had been going to another salon for color and they were not getting what I wanted at all. On the first visit to see Elvis, he totally got what I wanted and I was really happy with the color. I have since seen him a few more times and every time it turns out great! I have worked in a couple salons before in reception and have worked alongside a lot of stylist, Elvis totally has natural talent and has an understanding of color that not all stylist have. I was dedicated to KIM, my stylist at Art & Science for years and was heartbroken to have to leave her when I relocated. I highly recommend Kim to anyone seeking a reliable and skilled stylist. She is very talented and cares a great deal about her work. She really understood my hair and helped make it look it's best. She built a relationship with me as a client and paid her full attention to me during each appointment. I met with her many times over the years and was consistently pleased with my hair. Kim managed to make my hair style interesting and progressive while making sure that it was executed in a way that I could replicate at home. She never pressured me into buying products that I could not afford. My budget did not allow haircuts as frequently as I would have liked but her hair cuts always grew out in a really nice way. They have my Vote. The Experience: I gave art + science a try after I heard my main barber was fired from an old spot I used to go for simple haircuts. (Mainly using clippers.) So I was pretty shocked when I first found out that the stylists here didn't use clippers to cut mens hair. I was skeptic at first but I went for the ride. I asked the stylist what type of cut I was looking for and she put in great results. I've been going to this place ever since. The prices are a little steep, but to be honest I don't think I've never been this happy with a haircut in ages. So yeah I minus one star for the price but from my understanding neck trims are free, so I'm all for that deal! lol. The Staff: I'll keep this short and concise. Cali Shields is an amazing stylist. I have had medium to long length hair (thin/fine) for a long time, and I've been pretty bored with my hair the last few years, so I was looking forward to getting a high-quality haircut. Cali listened to what I had to say, made some insightful suggestions, and gave me the best haircut I have had in a very long time. She took her time, and was very precise with her technique. She gave my hair a lot of shape and movement, which is great because I am very much the wash-and-go type. I get frustrated when stylists talk incessantly during a haircut, as it makes me think they are not paying attention to the cut, and Cali DID NOT do this, which I so appreciate. I plan to only go to Cali moving forward, she is really the only person I trust to cut my hair! read more

I used to come here when I knew some stylists-in-training who needed hair models. I highly recommend the cheaper cuts and color that they do here so that the trainees can get some practice. I wasn't worried about my hair getting ruined because the regular stylists are there and consult with you as well. The place itself always seems really busy with all of the chairs full. I went here for a wash and blowout. From what I understand this place puts employees on a year long internship and on Mondays they offer this promotion. The girl that took care of me was new. Apparently the salon made her change her name because another girl already had her name ? ? ? I had Piper....the other Tara. You need to remember that most of the stylists are in training and you need to be patient. Don't make plans for what you think is going to be the end of your appointment because sometimes they have to start over. Piper took the time to learn how to make my very long straight hair look curly. She twisted it all and then diffused the hell out of it. What a pain, but she did it with a smile on her face. Lemme put it this way: I live in LA now, but will leave my hair un-cut for months just to have Paul cut my hair when I'm in Chicago. That guy understands hair texture and movement like no one else. If you have curly or otherwise textured hair or weird cowlicks or anything else that is a little "outside the box" I would highly recommend him. You will get a hair cut that looks amazing with no help, no product, straight from the shower. Moving to Chicago, I had to find a hair place for a trim/refresh. Art + Science has great reviews and decent prices so it seemed like a safe bet. Hannah shampooed, cut and styled my hair. I loved everything she did. I also love that she did everything from start to finish vs. some salons where different people handle different parts of the process. She was nice, friendly and did a great job. The space is more hipster-y. I hadn't been up to Wicker Park in this area but since the entire block was similar, it made sense. I'll be coming back here for my haircuts. I don't do anything fancy, just like to maintain the length but keep the hair healthy. read more

A few things about Art & Science: It is hipster-ish, and I am not. I still feel comfortable there. It is expensive. Most of my friends flip when I tell them what I pay... Paul is the best damned stylist I have ever ever ever ever had. It is worth the expense to go in to a salon trusting thatyour hair will look great when you leave. Paul never pushes products, he always listens to what I want, and will make suggestions on what can work for my hair if I am feeling daring. Quality has declined over time, but it's still a great place for a haircut. I've been going to Art & Science for sixteen years, so I've seen the highs and lows of the place. I've probably had ten different stylists, and they've all been very good. Charlie has been my favorite over the years, though, so it was great when he came back after his two-year hiatus in India. There may be better places for women to go for a haircut, but, for men, I can't think of any other salon that has had such a singular focus upon men's hair and hair-care products (this is the salon that gave birth to American Crew after all). read more

Justin is a doll! I volunteered to have my hair blown out and absolutely loved the experience. I've had some awful blow drying experiences where my hair just gets bigger and bigger and frizzier and frizzier. I left Art + Science with some smooth and shiny hair that was complimented about 5 minutes after I left. Twice! On Mondays it's all apprentice training and I think that it really says a lot about a salon that dedicates an entire day to training their future stylists. It has been a long time since I cared about what my hair looks like. Call it the weather, call it laziness...call it what you want, really. It was long and all one length, and when I did style it- it looked like bed head that I did on purpose. Well, one Sunday afternoon I decided to give Art + Science a shot and OH MY GOODNESS did Becca do wonders with my hair! It has style and body again! She did an amazing job keeping the length and giving me layers that move. It's soft and manageable for someone like me who hates to get up early enough to style my hair. Becca truly has a gift for not only creating beautiful hair, but for making me feel comfortable. By the end of the appointment, I felt like she was an old friend of mine. Art + Science is laid-back and cool. Micheal does a GREAT job listening to what you want, making suggestions based on your hair and trends, and then executing on what you decide together. She asks questions as she cuts, so there's never a "OMG that is too short" moment. Also, I think the cuts are very reasonably priced....I recently paid $55 for my cut. Bang trims are FREE. Gil was the best. Did a fabulous textured long layer look on my long hair and styled to perfection. Too bad I'll never have the talent to replicate his masterpiece at home. Definitely worth the $65, which for me is pretty expensive for a hair cut. My appt. was at 5pm and he was ready for me at 5pm. Not to say you shouldn't expect to wait at a hair salon. So I wanted to go dark and get bangs. Susan found the perfect shade and walked me through our strategy, allowing for exit plan if I decided the jump was too extreme. Paramount. Loved the color, loved the change, loved the security that if I woke up day 2 and hated it that not all hope was lost. It's week 4 and I'm ready to go back and maybe even go permanent. Tara was booked, so Seven cut my hair. Wow. Seven has bright eyes and meticulous hands. She was intense about my bangs and I appreciated it. Job well done, cut makes my pumpkin face look humanoid.
