I am a 61 year old woman who, when stressed, cuts my own hair ending creating a mess. My hair is also thinning and yesterday looked really dry and "sad". I went to the salon because I needed to be presentable for a wedding. Kelly looked at my head and said not to worry but she needed to shorten the length by a bit to fix the back ... I opted to try this salon for my first ouidad haircut, since I am on a curly hair journey. I booked online which was easy and it listed a price range, and of course ended up being charged the highest rate possible for my cut later. Though I did like my haircut, it wasn't good enough to go back. The interior is beautiful and I was greeted kindly and offered tea. I did drink some of the tea once it finally cooled but the rest of the experience was not so relaxing and I ended up leaving with half my cup still full. Because we had to diffuse my hair, I ended up spending a lot of time uncomfortably draping my body low on the chair, as told to do by my stylist. I wish they had a recliner or a better way to diffuse my hair - it was incredibly uncomfortable. For such a high end salon, I feel like there needs to be a better way! Vibe seems very cold and I did not feel good upon leaving. I was sold up on some curl shampoo, conditioner, and post shower leave in - and felt I couldn't refuse. I started to take a photo of the label so I could buy it separately later, and the stylist said "Well where else are you going to buy it? No one else carries it". I bought them since she had talked them up the whole appointment and the pressure was high. Turns out they haven't worked very well for me, despite being told I needed to use something better to get rid of all the "buildup" I had on my hair from my other shampoo/conditioner. I followed every instruction given by my stylist but using LESS product actually has been the best thing I could do. She gave me a hug when I was leaving - trying to mend the blow of a $250+ purchase I guess. I also was pushed to make a maintenance appointment for 3 months later, which would be about now. I declined. I wanted to see how my hair grew in - since I don't get my hair cut very often. Unfortunately I don't feel comfortable coming back, it was much too expensive for the experience I had. I don't have my own Yelp account so using this one for this review. My name is Vanessa. First off, I loved this salon. Last year I was a new client and got my hair done throughout 9 months. Staff was always nice and so were the owners. Nikki ended up being my stylist. I loved her work. I've always felt that quality hair is one of those things that is worth the money. I thought we never had a problem.. I know I didn't on my end. I was encouraged to wait for my hair to get stronger and healthier to continue lightening and called this spring to get on the books. I left a message with staff for a call back, didn't get one. Didn't think anything of it. Called the next day. No callback. That's when I started think maybe something was up. I was so confused. I tried thinking back to what I could have done ... I'm like, did I miss an appointment? I combed through my calendar and emails and saw I didn't miss any appointments. I've never no showed, cancelled or been late.. Then I went thru my Venmo and saw that I forgot to tip her at my last appointment! That sucks! I would never do that intentionally! I am a firm believer in tipping. Can't believe I'm only realizing 7 months later. She did know at the time I had a medical emergency that summer. I had a lot going on with Drs appointments and scans for the next few months afterwards it was just hectic on my end. So I just genuinely forgot. Not being from the east coast I am still not used to having to tip separately on an app and that's my bad. But even if that wasn't the case... it could happen to anyone innocently.. leaving the salon running errands etc and forgetting by the time you are home. I would have loved to have a conversation back in September and I would have sent it over instantly and been so thankful for the reminder. Typically owners/managers inform a client properly if there is a reason to not want to work with them anymore. I am not sure why this was the approach you chose? It's not only not professional but it's not kind. You know how hard it is to start all over when you've already invested time and money with a stylist and salon, why not be sure what they did was intentional first? And if it wasn't the tip, then doesn't anyone deserve to be given an opportunity to make it right or be informed? Once I realized they didn't want me to schedule, I called to get the details of my Appts and what color was used so I could start finding somewhere else to go... When I asked for the color last used she said, "we don't give that out to clients". Salons post color shade codes all the time on their socials I've never heard of that being hidden. It was just a shame, to not only not return my calls but you can't at least give me helpful information to go somewhere else? Just very unfortunate way to handle things. I've recommended this salon to my friends too. I normally don't leave negative reviews but this is just exactly what happened and what I would've told you directly if you had called me. Went here on the spur of the moment impulse to get my hair done. Got a stylist named Francesca. She was super sweet and gave me the exactly style I wanted. Parking was confusing. You have to park on this hill then walk through a building to get to the salon. I made the mistake of walking around the whole block before I found the right parking. I was super skeptical after I read the previous reviews but was pleasantly surprised. They recommended a couple products to me but you have the ability to decline politely (it's probably just a part of their job). Overall I will be going back. read more

Rarely am I compelled to write a review but stylist Arielle at Artists and Architects in Ridgewood deserves these 5 stars, as does her assistant who's name I am ashamed I don't recall. Arielle and I talked about my most recent cut, what wasn't working for me and the changes/improvements that I wanted to make. I showed a couple photos of the look I hoped to achieve and we got started. As soon as the blow drying started I knew I was going to like it. She also "thinned" out my hair, if that's the correct term, which only one other stylist has ever done. Thinning makes a world of difference for me in terms of movement and body and taking some weight off. To top it all off, easy and good conversation flowed. The best part about the experience...I LOVED my hair the next day when I had to style it on my own. I'd say that's the hallmark of a great cut. Thanks A2! read more

(sheryl here) I have been here a handful of times since 2021. I felt every time as if I'm an inconvenience to the stylist because I only want a wash and cut, not color or anything else. I ask for advise and only get a shrug, but when I tell the stylist what i want, she questions me and makes me feel insecure about my choices without giving any positive recommendations. My stylist was so rough blow drying my hair last time it actually hurt, and she's always seemingly distracted by some staff drama going on back of house. There is just an unhappy vibe here. The last straw was when I called and needed the same day appointment, and my regular stylist lied that neither she nor anyone else was available that day, then tried to pressure me to come the following day. So it really pains me to have to do this but unfortunately my last experience at this salon was so bad I will not be returning. And to be honest it has nothing to do with the stylist; she wanted and was happy to fix it but the manager I felt with was rude and inconsiderate and spoke to me like I was a moron who had never had her hair done in her life. I came in earlier this week for a bit and a balayage with that kind of ombré feel. I have not colored my hair in over a year and have been trying to grow it out form my once pixie cut. So needless to say I have pretty healthy optimal hair to work on. I went in showed the stylist many photos of what I was looking for. In the end it wasn't even close to the photos. The haircut was what I wanted to no complaints there. I had to rush out because I had to pick up one of my three kids from school and I wanted to give what she had done a chance before complaining. I went home and washed it, looked at it in several different lights and even curled it. At the end of the day I couldn't stand it. It was brassy/orange had no depth and so overly subtle. I called the following day because after all that the salon was already closed. I spoke to Hailey and asked to speak with David or Nikki(the owners). She was very nice and let me know she would need to speak with the manager and my stylist and then someone would call me back. I received a call back from one of the managers who said well we can put a glaze over it but it's going to make it darker. I said it isn't just the brassiness I do not like the overall result and it isn't what I had asked for. She said come in tomorrow and we can fix it. Ok great! I come in today and the manager only give the stylist a 15 min window for consultation after telling me that she would have her fix it and then the poor stylist has to move her other appointments around because of it not only that when I am done and the issue has been rectified to the best of its ability the manager tried to charge me another $150! I just spent $300 for a botched ass job and now you want me to pay for the fix. This woman had the nerve to say well if it was just a glaze I could do that but we had to redo the whole thing. I said yes of course you did because it was a horrible job and I hated my hair it was absolutely awful! Then she say well I can just charge you for a partial. At that point I told her to take my money and I'll never come back which she tried to somehow make better by then charging me $80 for the fix. It has nothing to do with the money but the fact on pure principal. If you do a shit job you should fix it not charge to fix the mistake you made to begin with. Looks like I will be in search of a new salon after being here for three years. What a shame... read more

They harassed my niece plain and simple. She needed an estimate and they didnt let her leave or else she would have to pay $300. So she gave it a shot. My niece is young and didn't know that she could have just walked away without paying and if she was charged she could have disputed the charge and put a police report on them for that. So, my daughter called ahead of time to inquire about fees based on her needs. She was told a single process color. Would be $85. There was no mention of hair length, potential add on costs etc. she was charged a total of $152. The color was $120 plus a glaze of $32. They refunded the glaze plus $10 (?) for a total of $42. However they should still refund the remainder which would be good business practice. Make sure you ask a ton of questions before you make your appointment. read more

I hate to write this review but after coming here for years - I just had to stop. The owners have involved themselves in SO many side business and ventures that their bread and butter has just suffered. Ever since they partnered with some new folks, it's just been straight downhill. The first few times I went post pandemic, I noticed the service was lacking but I didn't think much of it because I thought maybe folks called out sick and I was just so happy to get my hair done - I trusted the place - I went for years. I finally caught on that they no longer have a receptionist which explained why I would sit there for 20-30 mins waiting to check in for my hair each time. Then I started to notice that my stylists were washing my hair in addition to doing it. Seems they also eliminated that job. So essentially you have one person checking you in, doing your hair, washing it and not able to give their customer full attention. I get it, it was COVID, times were hard BUT they also jacked their prices - and I'm not talking about 25 or 50 bucks. My hair cost legit 150-175 more than used to. If you eliminate several positions to save money, do you really have to price gouge so much?? Final straw was when, after waiting 30 min yet again to check in, they charged me 95 dollars to cut my 7 year old's hair (she literally has baby hair - the cut and blow was MAYBE 15 min tops) and no one mentioned that a child's 15 min hair cut would cost this much. Now if you want to charge literally 70 percent more than you used to, you have to at least provide a service worth the cost - not make people wait and work your stylists to the bone. It's just a bad vibe. It used to be zen and chill and now it just seems sterile and money hungry - right down to the decor. I would say they were really hit hard by the pandemic but I see what they're all driving around - it's just gouging and taking advantage. After being a customer for years, it just left a fowl taste and my last visit was just that. Shame too - they have some talented folks but also have been losing talented folks. Some advice - be honest with your customers, inform them of the new costs, OR hire the people to justify the cost and focus on far fewer business ventures. I was going there since hey open the Salon in Ridgewood. Dave, the owner is involved in every possible business except the salon and it shows. My stylist left last month on the morning I had my appointment. They offered me someone else and I asked for the same price I was paying for Alexa's services. The new stylist charged me $40.00 extra than what they told me and when confronted she said she had to use more color because my roots were white. Daaa that's why I color my hair every 4 weeks. There is no fee schedule posted in the store or online so they charge what they want. I wouldn't be surprised if David the owner is getting less than what was collected. read more

I saw the negative review and that's unfortunate as I had nothing but the best experience. I have often tried NJ salons to make life easier but almost always end up back in NY. Then I received a reco for A&A. My hair is oddly difficult to cut - very fine strands, but lots of them. And when my hair is too long, it hangs heavy and looks awful. Most cutters end up giving me bad surface layers instead of removing weight from my hair, which I suspect is because they don't know how to cut my kind of hair properly so layers are their answer. The net result is on a humid day I have a triangle shaped hair style that makes me look like a Christmas tree. Really HATE THAT!!! I tried David and finally found someone who understands the issue and how to cut my hair properly. Hoo-Ray! The salon is nice, not pretentious. And, it's sustainable - how great is that! I know hair is very personal, as is the experience, which could go either way. But I will just say that as an often frustrated customer - I finally found a place that understands my hair. read more

I am DISGUSTED with the treatment I have received at this salon. I had shown a dark warm blonde balayage to my stylist, and I told her I had previously used a red direct dye over my hair. She reassured me that it was fine and she would" transform" my hair. 5 hours passed and she checked the foils and reassured me everything was lifting well and it was going to look great. Meanwhile she was nowhere to be seen. She was in the back room with the rest of the staff for HOURS. Finally she rinses me out and slaps a toner on. Once she rinses it out- she tells me it didnt turn out right. So she puts on another toner. At this point she took on another client and had someone else blowdry my hair. Once it was done- there was no transformation. The lightened pieces looked the same as when I entered! They charged me $230 and reassured me it'll lighten up with washes, or it'll show in the sunlight. I had never colored my hair before and believed them. Five washes later- my hair looks like Halloween!!! I go back to the salon and tell them I'm unhappy and please fix it or refund me. The stylist tells me she couldn't do anything because I have red "box dye" in my hair. But she knew that before starting! I told her before the appointment, before I was in her chair. Three times. She reassured me, lied to me, and took my money. Then her boss told me they can't refund me in a condescending manner. He smiled and sneered telling me that I have to "compromise" with them. He refused to give me any money back, or any color or toner today. He said I'll call you to schedule another appointment. I am BEYOND angry. Also very unprofessional, the stylist reached out to my close friends asking if I had used henna in my hair recently. You know, these are the questions you ask and make note of during the consult! She didn't ask for my hair history but proceeded to ask about it to mutual friends AFTER I came in upset with the results. Speechless by this. Never go here! read more

For the same exact color and cut 4 months ago the price was $100 more this time. The owner explained it went up because they had price increases, the stylist was promoted and there was extra dye needed. I understand the COVID situation is effecting us all but when you try to make it up on loyal customers, shame on you. Upon checkout the stylist had already scanned hair care product without asking. There was no itemized bill at checkout and was told that it would be e mailed to me. It was never sent! When we questioned that the prices went up and we should be made aware of that the owner aggressively defended herself saying the prices are on line. Well, guess what the prices are NOT on line. The prices are not even posted in the salon for anyone to see. When we asked to see the prices she had to pull them out from under the counter. For a salon to allow me to walk out looking like my 2 year old was given a bottle of hair dye and scissors, while claiming they gave me their top level stylist is beyond me! I was going to allow them to "fix" my hair, but after hearing another patron express major dissatisfaction, I realized that taking my money and running was the best option. Love coming here for a cut, color, and blowout with Arielle! I followed her here from her last salon and now have fallen in love with this one. It's so cozy and everyone makes you feel at home from the second you walk in (when they hang up your jacket) until the second you leave. They're constantly checking in on you to make sure you're taken care of. Free WiFi, charging station, snacks, beverages. Nice facility that's been newly renovated. Friendly and helpful staff. Products available for purchase and discounts. And Arielle is the best to talk to--I always look forward to my appointments with her. I used to HATE getting my hair cut (sometimes I'd literally cry) and was afraid to get it colored. But Arielle always checks throughout the process to make sure she knows what I want and that I'm happy with how it's going. She's even blown out a piece of my hair mid-coloring to make sure I love it before going any further. I get so many compliments on my hair and how natural and pretty the color looks. Some before I even leave the salon! I'd been itching to try out red hair for years and Arielle worked with me to achieve my dream color. She even cuts my boyfriend's hair now. I have very curly hair which I have grown below my shoulders for the first time in my adult life. The weather and humidity so far this summer had made it so out of control. I love the wave just not the frizz. I went in for a Cezanne treatment with Meagan. She explained that it would smooth the frizz and make the wave/curls much more manageable. The treatment did EXACTLY what she said it would. Everyone was very nice and friendly. I did go during the week but the salon was very low key and pleasant. I will never set foot in this salon ever again, I should have thought twice about going here in the first place. Before getting my hair cut at the Summit location, I had very long hair down to my belly button for many years and wanted to cut it then donate it ASAP. I normally go to a more professional-higher end salon which I've gone to several times and love but was unable to get an appointment. I decided to go to this salon where I showed the stylist how short I wanted my hair and how many inches I wanted off (about 8). She told me if I don't layer my hair after cutting it then my face will look "like a triangle". I've never heard this expression from any hair stylist in my life. Unfortunately I gave in to her "advice" and I told her to do VERY LITTLE layering in the FRONT ONLY, which she agreed to. Lets just say I ended up with hair much shorter than I wanted, layers in the very back of my head, and the difference between the longest part of my hair and the shortest with the layers was 5 INCHES. This place acts professional and the employees are not very friendly. Although my hair went to a good cause I was very unhappy with the whole experience. I been to the salon a couple of times for cuts and color with no major issues. However, this last experience was the worst. I showed the colorist and stylist an exact picture of what I wanted. I even pointed the color similar to one of the employees working at the salon. Moments later, I received a color totally different than what I had instructed. Although I pointed out light brown with warm highlights, I received dark roots with orange tips (a very bad attempt at the ombre look). I came home, looked at it again in natural sun, and hatted it. I went back immediately to the salon, and was offered a poor glaze. When asked to see the stylist who originally colored my hair, was given his assistant. When asked if the glaze would tone it down, the assistant didn't even ask the main stylist and proceeded to apply the glaze. After being shuffled around like a yo-yo and complaining, I was given an opportunity to return later in the week to fix this botched attemped at color. The only saving grace is that the cut was good. Note, if your going to try to save money and stay local, instead of going to a reputable salon in NYC, this is the baggage your going to have to deal with. You do get what you pay for! read more
