So wanted to like what was on offer here and have an addition to my excuses-to-go-to-Perth list…read more But. Yikes! Did not particularly want to write a negative review, but this was such a waste of money that it feels worse to not warn people. Caveat: perhaps meat entrees are good, or baked goods are good; we don't know -- we only bought frozen take-away vegetarian dishes. And they were uniformly awful. Tried: bread pudding -- bland, gritty, soggy, nothing to redeem this. Stir-fry with cashews -- overcooked, incredibly bland. This came with rice and the sort of mistake only a very amateur cook could make, viz: let's season the stir-fry without considering that we're going to mix in rice and... But I doubt the stir-fry was adequately seasoned even before it got all the (somewhat mushy) rice stirred in; the entire thing was flavourless. Sweet potato casserole -- probably okay for what it was supposed to be, a very Americanised dish totally overloaded with sugar, with no textural or flavour helps. We attempted a fourth dish which is now forgotten; I think it may have been a soggy and bland pasta -- it wasn't edible. None of the four dishes we took home were worth finishing, and we would've been mortified to serve them to anybody else. The people behind this are apparently so lacking in so much basic knowledge about cooking and freezing that I wouldn't hold out hope for other dishes. Very simple things that anybody who cooks for family or friends would know -- like how food will be transformed by freezing, and what modifications should be made to account for that -- were clearly quite beyond the cook's ken here. It would have been a very disappointing set of meals from a discount mass-produced frozen food line; it was a rip-off for a specialty store. So disappointed at the wasted time and money and high hopes. It is in general hard to find good food in the Valley; Perth has some notable exceptions to this, but "Sweet and Savoury" is not one of them.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Cool health food store in Perth,…read moreON. Lots of local, organic, and ethically sourced products. The Long Version: I love health food stores, so I had to check out Foodsmiths when we were in Perth. It's similar to Dandelion Foods in Almonte, and Natural Food Pantry or Kardish in Ottawa. Foodsmiths does seem to have more local items though and they have a formidable bakery section that the other stores I mentioned lack. They had tarts from Mrs. Garrett's Bake Shop (in Inverary, Ontario). As an aside, when I hear Mrs. Garrett, I will forever think of Charlotte Rae's character in "The Facts of Life." Lol. This clearly exposes me of being of a certain vintage ;) The regular prices of items that are easily found at other stores (e.g. Carbonaut, Made Good, Organic Meadow, etc.) are a tad higher than at the stores in Ottawa, but they have clearance sections and discounted items throughout the store. We were there at the end of January (2025) and I noticed a small Lunar New Year display with red lanterns, red parasols and a blue dragon. I was surprised to see that they sell sandals (!) They're all Birkenstock style sandals though, lol, the brands I saw were Finn Comfort, Haflinger, and Mephisto. I enjoyed poking around the store. Lots of free parking in their private parking lot. Foodsmiths is an unexpected gem of a grocery store, with a solid selection of personal health care…read moreproducts too, and some devices in Perth... I doubt that most other towns the size of Perth have such a store. This is one of my fields of expertise as an urban geographer, so I am planning to pursue this hypothesis further...
