Don't waste your time. They are very particular about the work they take and won't even consider you if your not in that realm. I stopped for a quote to have the center console cover redone on my BMW. The guy looked at my car and said they wouldn't even touch it. Then he quantified that it would be $175 an hour, which was actually totally fine with me but again they wouldn't even consider doing it. I would have to highly disagree with any of the positive reviews for this business. I came here thinking all the negative reviews might have just been a fluke. He doesn't have a unique personalty, he's just plain and simple rude. I tried to stop by to get a simple quote and repair on my car on a Saturday afternoon. I pull in the empty shop and I ask him if he can take a look and he tells me Go away, I'm busy. Then waves his hand and with a smirk says good bye and turns his back. I would have been more surprised if it wasn't for all my fellow Yelpers warning me beforehand. I am really shocked to see any poor reviews on Art's Upholstery. I have been going to him for years for work on a variety of auto and motorcycle upholstery jobs, and he always does fantastic work at a reasonable price. He has done complete restoration of a classic car for me, and I have even had him do his handiwork on my Porsche with no complaints. Art is a really nice guy and does exceptional work. I priced new upholstery at the two shops in SD that have good reviews on Yelp (including Art's). I went with Art because his pricing was significantly less than the other (which I'm sure does great work as well). My interior looks brand new. The job was perfect. A few things about Art: His forte is NOT small talk, pampering, or long extended goodbyes on the phone (like my mom). He's a very efficient man which is probably why his pricing beats the others. Asked for a quote over the phone on doing a new head liner on my car and it was pretty fair me knowing it's just an " estimate " and the price could change not a problem so I spent almost an hour driving to this place I show up while he's working on a car and tells me to wait so I waited.. 15 minutes later while he's upset cause the car is giving him issues and finally ask " what do you need I'm busy " told him I called over the phone and quickly says I cannot afford his work or his time got all mad and had a serious attitude problem and just tells me to leave so I left and I will NEVER ever come back or recommend anyone to this angry old man shit hole upholstery shop!! Art's personality is rough around the edges, but that's because he gets straight to the point. I did tell him to work on smiling every now and then..... anyway..... Pretty disappointed with this guy after our interaction today. I have had three motorcycle seats done by him and have referred upwards of 20 other guys and gals that I ride with to him and all I get is him blowing me off after pulling up in my car. He wouldn't even look at my car because it was a Mercedes which was pretty aggravating after the amount of business I have referred him. He wouldn't even come outside, just yelled that he wasn't even going to look at it, to take it somewhere else, and that he won't do anything Mercedes. I drove all the way to his shop to get an estimate and without even looking at my car he gave me an estimate that was over 10x the next highest estimate that I had gotten. I seriously thought he was joking at first! I told him about how much lower the other estimates were and he just blew me off. I dont doubt that he does good work, but that is not how you run a business. I would not let him anywhere near my car. We have a 1999 Lexus SUV which was in need of the seats being upholstered. The leather seats were cracked and was an eyesore. Art's Upholstery was highly recommended by our auto mechanic, Gus. We took our Lexus into shop on Saginaw in Fresno and talked to Art and let him know what needed to be reupholstered and cleaned. We got call Lexus was ready to be picked up. Unbelievable what amazing work Art did to Lexus. Seats in front were reupholstered and car was detailed inside and out and even cleaned under hood. The car looks brand new in the inside. I did not take a before and after picture. We since have referred some friends to him as they loved his work and are in need of their 1999 Lexus SUV reupholstered. I called my old friend Jesse Fox who works at GP Motorcycles to ask for a referral to a shop that does re-upholstery work on motorcycle seats; fortunately for me he said, "Art's Auto Upholstery". After a quck search on Yelp! I had all the info necessary to give this place a call and set something up as the Corbin solo seat on my recently acquired R100GS was cracked, worn, and in need of replacment. It was immediatley noticable that Art only answers the phone while his actually in in his small shop on Adam's Avenue in San Diego and his hours run roughly from mid morning to evening - maybe some weekends. Art was out of the vinyl I liked and had to order more so I left my seat with him and rode home on a carpet covered cushion he whipped up from some scraps laying around. A couple of days later, my seat was done and all for $95 and no extra charge for trimming down the foam to accommodate my inseam. It came up in casual conversation that I had recently experienced re-upholstery on my bike and a few of the guys in the group actually did the same as me, - they contacted Art, and are now sitting on fresh vinyl too. Shad Baze called to thank me for the referral and bragged that the seat was done same day; I passed that info along to Larry "Stoner" Stonestreet who also experienced this incredible level of speed and service. Hey....threw away my seat covers from Pep Boys that looked like crap on my vintage 1993 Geo Metro Convertible. Art did a fab job on the seats!!! and talk about quick, I stopped by around 10am, picked out fabric, he took the front passenger seat out, called back around 2pm, one seat was done, he put it in, took the other out and I was out of there in 45 min. I had the pleasure of taking in my motorcycle today for Art to help me in my seemingly endless quest for a comfortable seat. Art had recovered a seat for me a few years ago, and did a nice job. This, however, was a complete redo- he listened to what I was hoping to achieve, crafted a new foam shape, and recovered it beautifully, giving me the most comfortable motorcycle seat that I have ever experienced, stock or after-market. He let me watch, asking me to try the seat at various stages to make sure that we were getting it right, answered all my questions, and was a pleasure to deal with the entire time. Cannot say enough about Art. He's quite the character, and the defining reason to go to small, local businesses rather than chain stores.
