For me, auto body shops are in the category of handymen, plumbers, barbers, auto repair... I could look on Yelp, but I usually start with people I trust. I mentioned to friends that I needed a scrape fixed on my right rear door panel (it only takes a momentary lapse in focus to scrape against a concrete pillar in a parking spot you've pulled into a hundred times). The panel was not dented, but the paint was scraped deep enough that it needed to be addressed to mitigate rust. It was also in an obvious location so it would always be staring me in the face. For added context, my car is over 15 years old, and though well maintained, has its reasonable share of minor dings. My point in sharing this is that I was not seeking a perfect redo of the entire car... just the equivalent of patch on a skinned knee, ignoring the other bruises. Friends gave me four recommendations and visited them all for an estimate, making it clear that this would not be an insurance claim and that I was paying cash. I asked about lead time and duration needed for repair. All four shops were professional and the folks I spoke to were courteous. George (the owner of GA Coachworks) was straightforward and reasonable and offered to take it the next day (I deferred due to my own schedule). He didn't try to sell me on his shop. Also, the office manager who did the paperwork, June, is efficient and organized. To sum, I dropped it off on a Monday. June called on Tuesday to tell me it was done. I picked it up on Wednesday morning. In addition to the scrape, there were two small dings on the same panel, but were located nowhere near the scrape (the type of ding you get when the person parking next to you opens their car door into yours... sigh). To my pleasant surprise, George went ahead and fixed them for me. I wasn't expecting it, so that made it all the nicer. One could say that any shop would have done that. If so, then good on those who do. In this case, George did it, so a well done and thank you. Circling back to my opening point about tending to prefer recommendations over Yelp, one might ask why I am posting here. Two reasons: (1) I know there are folks who start with Yelp because that's their thing or are just new to San Diego and don't know anyone and (2) as thanks for the little bit extra that George did. I had to bring in my new (to me) Hyundai Tucson with some recent damage from a little oopsie that I did not want to keep looking at but wouldn't be getting my insurance involved. I reversed into a pole in a tight parking lot on Convoy and had a big dent in the lift tailgate with paint chipping. It looked bad. I called ahead to GA and was able to come by at a time convenient for me in the afternoon so they could take pictures and email me the quote. I went ahead with getting a dent in the hood (bought the car with it) also assessed and I was pleasantly surprised by the price when I received the estimate including both repairs. I got on the schedule right away and everything was repaired in FOUR days!!! I got the call it was ready and picked up a freshly-washed car that looks like nothing ever happened! The worst experience ever. My car was taken here a few years ago and I'm writing to talk about the experience I had that still bugs me to this day and warning others not to choose this shop. I brought in my car which had be vandalized along with other cars by a homeless person in my neighborhood at the time. This shop was recommended to me by a friend of a friend who used to paint cars so I thought okay he knows best. I take my car in they are super cool people at first and then that's it I request the entire body be repainted and the windshield. And then I waited. I called in because I haven't hear any news or updates in a while it had been a few months they told me they were still looking for the windshield and asked ME to look with them. My car is an import but they treated this thing like an alien. They said they had attempted to put a windshield in but it didn't fit so I guess they gave up? After a few more months passed I was pissed I told them I would do the windshield just paint the car already so I can bring it home it had basically been there a year. Anyways, get the car back it's looking great until I start looking closer. The paint was literally cracking a month after taking the car home and garaging it. No washes! Panels are all flush and don't rub. This paint job looked so great at first but was very obvious it was lazy and rushed!!! They also molded my bumper to my car so I can no longer take off my bumper if needed... Huge pain. These might look like small complaints but cracking paint one month after garaging the car is not okay. I was expecting this paint to last the rest of the time I have this car and look absolutely beautiful and unfortunately it looks like I painted it myself. Final note: When I got my car back and replaced the windshield me and the guys I called were able to get it done in 3 visits. First they measured, brought in one option, and that option didn't work so they brought it one more which was able to fit. read more

I recently took my black Tucson to GA Coachworks for some minor damage to the driver's side front fender and the wheel well molding. This was self inflicted damage that I did when trying to pull through a narrow garage door. Lots of white scrapes on the fender caused by hitting the white rubber molding attached to the wood of the garage door. No dents; just lots of deep white scrapes which really stood out against the black bodywork. They did a great job of blending the area they painted with the undamaged part of the fender where it extends onto the front of the car. I tried hard to find where the new paint meets the original paint and it is literally invisible. Can't tell this area was ever damaged. I selected them based on the Yelp reviews. Before I selected them I did of course see the few negative reviews, but they were far outnumbered by the very positive reviews. Based on my own experience, I can highly recommend this firm for you autobody work. read more

Took in my Tesla Model 3 in. While I was driving on the highway I was hit by a random object causing my front bumper damages. I took it here because they recommended it to me. George fixed the main damage with a fantastic work but he created minor issues. My bumper wasn't installed properly (like the factory). My front sensor gasket was damaged. George also told me he was going to paint the whole front bumper and he didn't he covered the other damages with just paint leaving it noticeable. He also lost two bolts from the frunk I didn't noticed until I reinstalled the front bumper due to him not installing it correctly. He charged me $900 for all these "hours" he had to work. read more

My former auto body man retired and I had a ding in my Ram 1500 tailgate and my almost 20 year old Corvette paint was getting to the point where it could not be corrected anymore. I was recommended to GA Coachworks from The Corvette Shop as the owner said that he had a number cars repaired and painted there and GAC always did a great job. For the tailgate, I removed it from the truck and brought it in. A few days later, I had a better than new looking tailgate for my truck. A couple weeks later I brought the 2004 Corvette in. George painted the hood, top, roll bar, and blended in the fenders. And now the car looks like brand new again, they did an excellent job, like it came from the factory. I also had a scratch in my driver side rear mirror. I had wet sanded it out, but I had not yet buffed out the sand marks. GAC buffed that out and I did not even mention the mirror to them! I got a quote from Bob Stall Chevrolet and they quoted $3626.63 for the same job that GAC charged literally more than two thousand less for. I have found a new body shop for my fleet. read more

I unfortunately backed into my roommate's car in our driveway which caused the before photo in my review. I went to a few shops to get quotes and honestly, did not get a good vibe from any of them. I was tired of searching and was honestly about to just go with the cheapest quote but luckily a colleague of mine recommended G A. I emailed in some pictures to get a quote and within a few hours was given a range which seemed reasonable. My roommate works in the medical field (12 hour days), is on call, and also goes to school so it was really hard to find a good time to bring the car in. Luckily, he had a short vacation scheduled so I emailed George on a Tuesday asking if I could bring the car in on Thursday in hopes to pick it up by the following Monday or Tuesday. My Honda was hit and had some cosmetic damage to the bumper, trunk, and quarter panel. I wanted to replace my bumper and paint the rear end of my sedan but didnt know where to go. I went to Suspension Plus on Midway becuase I have recieved 5star service from them in the past when adding a lift kit to my Toyota and really liked the service experience and needed a recommendation. My guy recommended I used GA Coachworks and ask for George. I called them up asap and a young guy, Jared, answered I told him Id like to use George's services and that I needed a quote ASAP so I can get compensated by those who hit me and get my car looking pretty again. Jared said with great confidence that he would be able to take care of me and that I could come in the same day. I took my car in, Jared took a look at it, and said that he had a few qutes ahead of me and that if he couldn't send my quote that evening he'd send it the following day. 48 hours later and I have yet to recieve my quote so I called into the shop midday Friday. I talk to Jared again and I get pretty much the same response if I don't send it today I'll send it first thing Monday. Monday has come and gone, its been over a week. I'm safe to say that they have forgot about my quote request. I had a dent on the hood of my GT-R and they were the shop I was sent to to have the headliner removed. The headliners in these cars are a PIA, but they managed to do it with no problem. Everything looks as good as before. They work with many high end cars so I trust them. If you have a low car like my gtr then you'll have no problem entering and exiting thr facility. The inclines aren't steep and very safe. The lady working the desk was very nice! She gave me a bottle of water while I waited to pick up my car. The owner was very professional and courteous. About 3 years ago, I tried to get my Tesla bumper "refreshed" (from the nose cone bumper to the new style). At that time, I purchased the an OEM new style bumper and got it color matched to my car all by the guy that said that he could do the job. Long story short, he was unable to complete the job. Also at that time, I tried calling several other places and no one would want to touch this job. I hung onto the bumper. Fast forward 3 years later, I damaged my bumper and figured that instead of investing in the old nose cone bumper, I'll try it again. So here goes another round of calling place after place; no "certified" Tesla body shop was willing, nor was Tesla. One one of my last calls to a bumper repair place, the guy highly recommended to call GA Coachworks. I called them, spoke to George, gave him all pertinent information and got my car in after I ordered the parts. They did a great job in retrofitting the new style bumper to my car. If you're trying to do the same, this option is considerably cheaper than going through Tesla (they don't even do that work anymore) and even less expensive than the aftermarket options (T Sportline, etc).
