Swope Art Museum, officially known as the Sheldon Swope Art Museum, may not have all the…read morerazzle-dazzle of Indy's Newfields, however, this is an impressive regional museum and a source of pride in Terre Haute. The Swope Art Museum has a collection of nearly 2,500 works of American art including paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from the 19th century to the present. Changing exhibitions from the permanent collection include selections from American Scene Painting of the 1930s and 1940s, 19th century American art, early 20th century modernism, Indiana art, and Post-World War II figurative and abstract art. The museum is particularly known for its American Scene Painting collection with artists including Thomas Hart Benton, Charles Burchfield, Reginald Marshall, Grant Wood, and Edward Hopper. 19th century American art movements include William Merritt Chase, George Inness, Frederick MacMonnies, Mary Fairchild MacMonnies, and Tompkins Harrison Matteson. 20th century art includes works by George Bellows, Arthur B. Davies, Manierre Dawson, Jack Levine, George Luks, and Fairfield Porter among others. Indiana artists are also represented here quite extensively - J. Ottis Adams, William Forsyth, Theodore C. Steele, C. Curry Bohm, Otto Stark, Carl C. Graf, Genevieve Goth Grath, and Terre Haute natives like John Rogers Cox, James Farrington Gookins, Janet Scudder (who is directly related to the physician who delivered me!), Caroline Peddle Ball, and Gilbert Wilson. Finally, more contemporary artists like Robert Indiana, Andy Warhol, Paul Jenkins, and Robert Motherwell also have art works here. You can schedule a guided tour here that lasts about an hour. In terms of accessibility, the Swope is on two floors. There is a small elevator that can accommodate most wheelchairs/mobility equipment. They also have a wheelchair that can be utilized in case yours doesn't work (assuming you can transfer). There is 2-hour street parking around the museum (it is watched, so watch the time to avoid fines). For special events, visitors can use the Old National parking lot. This is a 1901 building - so efforts at accessibility are appreciated. Admission is free, however, I'd check the website as there are somewhat limited hours. While Swope is certainly not a national museum, it's a much nicer than expected regional museum with a lot of impressive art and genuinely warm staff and volunteers. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Terre Haute has quite a bit to visit and a stop at the Swope should be a part of any weekend getaway.

The only downside is bad lighting; perhaps the renovation will pay attention to that. Worth a visit; free parking for 2hrs downtown nearby. Largely ADA accessible; if at standing-observation height.

If you find yourself stranded and not into Big Ten sports? Where do you go in such a place? Trust me, walk through the door of Cinema Gallery and you will find yourself in some other realm. There are many more colors than just Orange and Blue, especially if you catch some of the glass pieces casting rainbows during the day. Some say culture traveled between New Orleans and Chicago and moved as fast as it could between the two cities once. Something must have fallen from the train and it stuck around Cinema Gallery. It is nothing short of gorgeous.

A Chorus of Trumpets was placed on the campus of Indiana State University in 2011 and is considered…read morea permanent art exhibit. It's located in Rankin Plaza and was designed to complement the indoor performance venue formerly known as Tilson Music Hall (now Tilson Auditorium). It's used by student/faculty musicians and the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. The piece was conceived by Howard Kalish, a Brooklyn-based artist who created it utilizing stainless steel, aluminum and tinted urethane. It's 10' high, 9' wide, and 9' deep. A Chorus of Trumpets is easy to get to and close to a main campus entrance. It's adjacent to the area known as the Arts Corridor. Kalish actually did visit the campus to envision the piece and worked to create a piece that interacted with the area's natural elements. The piece features translucent tinted urethane elements resembling the shape of trumpet bells. Kalish intended for the piece to be analogous to a musical composition. This piece looks particularly impressive at night, though I failed to get a night picture while in the area. ISU has a permanent art collection and this is considered part of it.

Still, the intricate detail of the stainless steel and aluminum frame holding the horns must have required a great deal of skill and planning. We found some great handmade soaps, linoleum-block-print cards, and handmade wooden pens. They also have a nice selection of handmade leather wallets and belts that are very attractive and affordable. The owner also takes portrait commissions. We stopped in on the way to McCormick's Creek State Park. Downtown Gosport has a few other places to visit, including a candy shop, a gift shop called the Crazy Lady Next Door, a bike shop, and a cafe (we heard good things about the pie). It is a nice little town to visit if you're in the area.
