The man wanted sushi for his birthday, so of course that's what we're getting. Asahi revamped, a new date night spot that needs to be added on your eat list. Under new ownership, this is a completely new menu, experience, and vibe. Y'all know, I love some good fresh fish, and trust me... I know how hard it is to get in Mississippi Not that you can't get fresh, you can, you just have to pay a little more for it. I LOVVVEEE Uni (sea urchin) which isn't always readily available, so when restaurants have it, I'm ordering it. I've said "This place has the best!" Well the best has been beaten. Asahi holds THE BEST uni I've had in the last several years. Even better than the ones I've special ordered in from Cali a few weeks ago. Their sweet shrimp was SOOO SWEET!! Melt in your mouth perfection. The crispy fried shrimp head was so good, I had to stop and look closer at it, because I swear it was stuffed with something haha like shrimp crack, it was simply amazing. The man has been to Japan several times, and is a bigger sushi fan than I am (can you believe that?!), he approved, and said this might just be his new favorite spot. We usually go for the omakase which is chefs choice of premium pieces, but since we didn't see it, we just went for the biggest combo which includes 12 thick pieces of sashimi, 9 pieces of sushi nigiri, 1 tuna roll (but we subbed for a philly roll), California roll, and your choice of the specialty roll. We got the Out Of Control roll, not only was it out of control, it was out of this world good!! It had something crunchy and sweet in it, almost taste like a sweet pickled radish, whatever it may be, I don't care, it works, and it was amazing. Even their simple philly roll, when you think simple is just, ehhh... simple... no, they've set the bar. The fish tasted like it was just cured in house. Fresh fish should have a little chew, a little tug, a little bite, it had it all. We didn't see the Cali roll, but we ain't mad about it, everything was so good, we didn't even noticed. The owners mother came out and gave us some of her homemade kimchi, it tasted like it came out of a Korean grandmas kitchen BTW they have an array of sake, they let the man try some carbonated sake, which we haven't seen around here, it's uniquely good in its own. If you haven't had carbonated sake, come try it here! Our server was very knowledgeable, and whatever she wasn't sure about, she asked, much appreciated for that! They've just opened so the menu is still limited. The staff is new, so be patient, be understanding, be kind because the wait might be a little long, but it's worth it. Came here while I was in Flowood to visit family. I was wonderfully impressed as the food was delicious and the service was great. Our waitress, Savanna was patient and very attentive. I received the wrong sushi roll and they were quick to replace it, no questions asked. The sashimi is good quality and fresh which is always the first thing I look for in a sushi restaurant. We wanted to love it here. We really did. Sushi chef's are some of the best! We've followed her from another great local restaurant. The sushi is rolled and cut very thick, if you like Osaka, you will love here. It's a cooler vibe Osaka is all it is . Sushi is subpar and it's the quality not the chef's. Service was great, options are great but what should be the star of the show, the food, just isn't that good. Husband loved the sashimi but neither of us cared for the Red Bull or the angry dragon. No, flavor or spice in the spicy tuna. The Red Bull, I know it's a favorite per other reviews but our review on it, it lacks flavor. We are very familiar with a sushi menu as we eat sushi 60+times a year. Larger than one bite rolls aren't our favorite but a roll witha lot of flavor would make up for the size but that wasn't the case tonight. Again, I'll stand with that if you like Osaka you will love it here, it's better, much cleaner and cooler vibes. Went there for dinner last night. It's hidden off of the main road, but was really good. We got a couple of sushi rolls, 2 of which were at the waiters recommendation. My girlfriend was scared that the Godzilla roll would be spicy and it ended up being one of her favorites. We also tried the bbq salmon roll and the tootsie rolls which we liked a lot. I heard great things about this restaurant. My two friends and I decided to eat there on a saturday night. As soon as we sat down, our server ( a young dark haired women ) became hostile and unhelpful. After waiting for food and drinks, it became evident she was uninterested in helping my table as she continued to serve other patrons while ignoring me and my friends. It was obvious that the server chose to neglect our table in some sort. We received our food which was great. As dinner came to an end, my friend and I paid together (2 of us) while my other friend stuck to water and didn't eat at the restaurant. There was an automatic tip for a large party of 2 people? I confronted the manager a African American woman at the desk and she shrugged with a demeaning look and said "i'm sorry"? We went to Asahi a few weeks ago for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. The portion size was not what I was expecting in the best way possible. I ordered what was the equivalent of hibachi chicken. When our food arrived, there was a significant amount of rice chicken and noodles along with the soup and side salad served prior to the main course. We also had a dessert that was fantastic as well! 11/24 Been back a couple times now, the place is awesome and consistent in great quality and deliciousness. Ask for the secret menu item the Asahi Roll. ------- I loved this place! The owner also has a restaurant in Flowood called Osaka. I'm glad he opened this new place closer to my work and home. I've been a regular at Osaka for 10 years. I first noticed the environment and feel inside. The warm purple and reds are complimented by a refreshing cool blue tone in lightening. This atmosphere is very fitting for a modern sushi restaurant. It reminds me of some of the great sushi places I've been in other big cities around the country. Although new, the wait staff are very friendly, attentive to the needs of the patrons, and pleasant to interact with. They also were quick to serve and provided refills on drinks without having to ask. That shows great environmental awareness. The owner even came to check on us and offered an appetizer of beef satay on the house. It was delicious. Now for the food. I ordered pan fried Gyoza and sushi for appetizers. The Gyoza was the best my brother and I had ever eaten. I'd taste a little of the sauce before dousing the whole dumpling though because the chili oil hits you hard at first. The sushi didn't come out until after my entree. This is one reason for the four stars. I didn't want to eat my hibachi entree and then be too full to eat sushi, but as I waited on my sushi my hibachi got cold. I think the only reason this happened is because the waiter was still learning. The owner assured next time sushi is supposed to come out with appetizers. I got the scallop gonkan, salmon roe, and a salmon roll on the house. I wanted my salmon roe with quail egg but they were out. That's okay, it happens because it's a rare item on a sushi menu. The roe was perfectly chilled (it's not suppose to be room temp) and so fresh! I didn't order the salmon roll, I think they made it by mistake, but they let me keep it. It was also good. My scallop gonkan was amazing. I always get mine with extra sauce. It's cooked scallop mixed with Japanese mayo and masago, then baked and placed in a sushi roll. It was perfectly heated and overflowing with scallops--just how I like it. Osaka (same owner) also has this roll. For my entree I got Steak and Shrimp combination hibachi. Lunch price ($13) was exactly right for my expectation and the serving size. Actually the amount of fried rice was more than I expected. The steak was cooked my requested medium rare perfectly. The shrimp was huge but a tad over cooked for me. Still tasted good though. The veggies were mixed. Some like the zucchini was cooked just right and others like the broccoli and carrots were a tad under. Another reason for four stars this visit. This place easily has potential for 5 stars. I recommend unique rolls, apps and entrees that can't be found anywhere else, keep great staff and well trained, and a few tweaks on cooking prep. With these changes this could be the go-to place in Greater Jackson for traditional Japanese and sushi. read more

I've been back several times, and it just gets better. The dinner hibachi is more than one person can eat, and the lunch portions are also larger. The hibachi is great. It can be a little pricey at dinner, but you will be taking a box home. The sashimi, sushi, and rolls are all terrific. Everything from the tuna tataki appetizer,standard and exotic rolls, to the yellowtail sashimi, is all fresh and presented beautifully. If you are on the Rankin county side of the rez, I recommend you try Asahi. read more
