Dirty shop that doesn't look like a shop. Almost no inventory, very vague over phone. He rummaged through a Tupperware box of random items looking for the bullion piece I was after. Silver was off color with no mint markings. Owner seemed to twist everything I said, acted confused and hurt when I asked which mint it had come from. It's hard to put in to words just how incredibly disorganized, messy and bizarre this place is. Ash took my chains to be fixed, I went to get them back on a few occasions and they were never done on the dates he gave me. Finally on my last visit he told me it would be better to buy new chains from him. The whole experience just seemed shady from the start. Chains are still broken, waste of time. read more

I'm not sure what my experience today at Ash yielded. I entered the shop, which is sketchy and smells of stale cigarettes, to have a peek at what the store offers. The woman behind the counter greeted me, but was working with another client at the cash so I went about perusing. Problem is, there's nothing to browse. The place is filled with empty display cases, knocked over mannequin necks, and a whole lot of nothingness. There is a massive flat screen TV facing the counter, and the other customer appeared to be looking at a scrap book filled with pictures of potential products. I gathered that since the business has been broken into so many times, maybe they just show pictures of what's for sale and then get it from a safe (just a guess though). I suppose if you're hoping to pawn some heirlooms, this is the joint to venture to. They buy scrap gold and jewels, and apparently do repairs. Ash Jewelers looks really sketchy. This is a fact, but if you can get beyond this little issue you will find a decent little business with a very bizarre watch battery deal. The sign in the window (which may be covering a broken window pane) that Vanessa mentioned is legit. It's there and the offer stands as of the last time I was in the shop. I don't know what the gimmick is, but you should definitely take advantage of this offer. It feels far too good to be true and I wouldn't be surprised if it disappears any day, so take advantage now while you still can. The man who holds court in the store, who I assume is Ash, seems friendly enough. He is constantly busy but always takes a moment to great a customer as they walk in the shop. The store itself is nothing to write home about as I've already mentioned, but that may be a matter of not wanting to draw more attention to a store that deals with buying and selling jewelery. If you're looking for a few bucks and have some gold to sell you might want to stop here. The selling prices seem reasonable and you may walk out with a few bucks for giving up things you don't really need. Ignoring the way this place works, it's worth taking a step inside! read more

Never usually write negative reviews. But. Called several jewellers to get quotes for my gold. Ash Jeweller gave me the best quote compared to other jewellers I called, and they were also listed to be open later. Told buddy I planned on coming in the next hour or so, that was all fine and dandy. I drove 45kms from Enfield to Halifax. When we got there, my boyfriend and I stood at the door for 15 minutes in the cold, buzzing the buzzer trying to be let in. I told them I was coming, they knew. The television was on inside and there was a dog roaming around. I figured maybe the buzzer died or something, so I tried calling the mobile number, no answer. I called the store, and watched the phone ring and still nobody came to the door. I got my brother to try calling from home (he has a different number than I called with earlier) -- no answer. It got too cold for us to wait any longer so we left. Almost immediately after we left, my brother tells me that he returned his call. I haven't heard anything from them since. Waste of time, energy, and gas on my part. Why is it as soon as we left, my brother got a call back and I didn't? I will never attempt to go here again. I walked into Ash Jewelers this evening after reading the reviews here, and had very low expectations. I wanted to sell a ring, I assumed that this place was a jewelery reseller, or pawn broker. When I walked in (around 6:30), the place was brightly lit, clean, smelled neutral, and was generally pleasant to the eye. What immediately caught my attention was the empty cases that (who I assume to be) Ash was sitting behind, chatting on the phone. I would have let him finish his conversation by looking at merchandise, however, there was nothing to look at. All of the cases lay empty, with what seemed to be red velvet lining the bottom. I showed him my ring. He held it in his hands for a couple moments, weighing it, and proceeded to tell me that the stones were created. I was taken aback, because he was able to tell me this without the aide of a loupe! (That's that magnifying glass thing that you see all reputable jewelers use.) Unfortunately for Ash, this deteriorated my opinion of him greatly as the stones are genuine, which I informed him of. At that time he informed me that there would be no point in selling to him because the value is so low, it's (and this is a direct quote) "embarrassing". This is when he informed me that all he does is buy for melt. This whole exchange took about 5 minutes, and the whole time he had the cordless phone in his hand with his palm over the microphone, waving it around as he flourished his speech with his hand movements. After the main point of the visit, I wanted to look at some merchandise, and I pointed out that the cases were empty. I asked about seeing some and he basically said that he doesn't do that, and the "girls" take care of that during the day. It doesn't seem that customer service is the strong point of this operation. Perhaps I need to go in during the day, which is when there are more employees. If you're expecting a pawn, don't bother. Also, if you can't be there from 9 - 5, also, don't bother. Also, if you want to see actual merchandise, don't bother. Otherwise, it's a nice shop. read more

Sketchy is right. More a gold buyer than a jeweler. Steer clear of this place. You get what you pay for. Past date Chinese battery installed for free. No deal. Just up the street on Quinpool at 6281 is Vina's Jewellers (Est. 1987) where a fresh battery installed by a master clock and watch repairman for $5.25 tax in. Make sure your watch isn't damaged by someone using the wrong tools. Vina's has all the correct tools and has rescued my favorite watch from water damage. read more

window clearly says: "free watch battery and replacement" surely there's an asterisk missing or fine-print so fine that i just missed it. free?!? doesn't matter. it says 'watch battery' and i need a replacement. so, i walk into Ash with the full intent to pay for a new watch battery and replacement (i know, i know, but this is a special magical watch and i'm not about to fidget with the inner-workings, no matter how easy everyone says it is). the guy, Ash?, behind the counter is with another customer, but pauses to ask what i'm looking for. i stumble, not wanting to appear an opportunist and lay it on the line: 'i know it says... but i'm going to pay'. he says nothing to respond, except that i'll get my watch back in 10 minutes. there's another customer when i return 3 hours later. he interrupts to hand me my watch as I try to inconspicuously-yet-conspicuously pull out cash, as a way of saying 'see? i'm going to pay... but i'm not trying to throw cash at you in a disrespectful manner'. he waves my gesture away. "are you sure?" he returns to his conversation with the other costumer. he's sure. i leave slightly confused, but a bit more smitten with the friendliness of halifax :) fyi: i reserve 5 stars for free and super-duper greatness (not mutually exclusive) read more
