We camp but we have had friends stay in the cabins. We stayed in the wooded sites kindling is our favorite, big sites easy to pull thru and lots of space for the dog to hang out too. Fire pit is always cleaned up and looking nice. Water and sewer hook up area is clean and looks nice too! We have stayed in the sites facing the lake too and those are nice as well. I have heard the lake is beautiful but we have not been out on the lake yet! We always look forward to our next stay!

Mt…read more Carmel is a beautiful family Bible camp on a large chunk of shoreline on Lake Carlos 4 miles north of Alexandria, Mn. A great swimming beach- diving dock, kayaks, canoes and a pontoon boat are there; kids are supervised by a lifeguard and there is a campfire ring as well as a sauna. No extra fees for using boats- or anything for that matter! We were looking for a Christian Camp with multiple programs for all ages and let me tell you, Mt. Carmel has something for everyone. There are Worship services in the morning and evening, Bible discussion groups, activites for the kids including crafts, games, movies- you name it. There is a gorgeous brand new Chapel overlooking Lake Carlos, and a beautiful lodge- plus 30 cabins and cottages. Mt. Carmel is one of the hidden gems in Minnesota that begs to be discovered. You can go there, be at peace, let your kids do their own thing and not have to worry about their safety or what they are doing. Their counselors are college students with a strong commitment to Faith and genuinely love teaching and being with children. This place is so wonderful- you can literally do all of the programs or do none of them. There is no pressure to participate, but you'll want to. Many of the guests have been going for generations, and there are just as many new guests who are discovering this sanctuary from the pressures of the world. The accomodations range from cottages, rustic cabins, remodled cabins, brand new cabins, RV sites and luxurious lodge rooms. A family of four can spend a week there for well under $1700, and that's with a top-tiered lodge room WITH FOOD! Cabins and cottages are less expensive and have a wonderful charm of a forgotten Minnesota. The food plans here are variable- you can go no food, some meals or full plan, which is what we do- breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks. There are a few special nights like a Hoedown or an ethnic buffet.' The food here is spectacular. Entrees range from grilled ribs and chicken to homemade lasagna to pizza to tatortot hotdish! Every lunch and dinner had homemade bread or rolls. Theres also a healthy salad bar and special diet considerations are available. My kids are a bit picky and they ate everything. They now have free WiFi too. Please treat yourself or your family to a week or weekend at Mt. Carmel- they are now open year-round for vacations, retreats and even business meetings. We have made many friends there and are so grateful we "took a chance". We usually do the same things- same restaurants, etc. This is now our most anticipated destination of our year! There is one bad thing about Mt. Carmel- my kids cry when we leave. That's quickly extinguished by the Dairy Queen in Alexandria on the way home.

It really is worth the time to stop in, enjoy a meal, and take in the tour. Jay Johnson, who was the last owner of the property before it was donated to non-profit company that owns it now, was our tour guide. He does a very good job of it. He covers a lot of history through the history of his family that lived in the house beginning in 1882. The house was built, and expanded by his family, who used it both as a residence, and as a hotel. When Johnson inherited the property as the last, surviving member of the family, he inherited a jumbled mess of boxes stored for many years with items dating back beyond the Civil War. The really interesting part of it all is that he has all the provenance - the pictures, the letters home, and the legal documents - to go with the story. And, there's something for everyone to see there including toys, clothes, furniture, family paintings, antique and obscure pieces of dining implements, and a complete room devoted just to the Civil War. The house/museum is so complete, and so interesting, it has been licensed by local schools as part of their education program, and students are brought here to learn not only about the history of the town and family, but of the country as well. For $8.00, the price can't be beat. Children under the age of five are admitted free with a parent, and students are only $5.00. Of course, they take donations on top of the admission price, and we were so impressed, we left $50.00. It was that good!

First of all the Prospect House is the name of the Hotel that used to be run out of this house…read more One of the owners was a Civil war soldier that took some bullets and traveled around defeating the confederate soldiers. He was good at documenting things and writing letter so the history is well preserved. This is a great grandson telling the stories of the first house in town, they were first for a lot of things, electricity, phone etc. I thought the way that it was organized into different person's items or time frames of history. The basement is the Civil war area with some fascinating things to see. The tour is only $8 and they last about an hour and a half. There are structured times for the tours. Check out my photos. Of course, times may change. The older i get, the more I appreciate the history and the people that made this country great. I enjoyed the tour, the many items and Jay's weird sense of humor. It was a fun lesson and trip back in time. Jay's family didn't get rid of anything. Maybe someone needs to tell American Pickers. He has a LOT of stuff not even on display, just in storage. Lots of history for sure. Very fascinating.

The owners of Lake Le Homme Dieu B&B have no decent courtesy or respect for their neighbors. During…read morea storm in June 2013 their dock, which is not fully secured down, was blown off its frame and continued down shore. The dock was made up of large, maybe 4x4 ft. pieces reminiscent of pallets. These pieces, after being blown down shore, came to smash upon my father's small fishing boat which was tied to our dock. Our boat had been weathering the storm just fine, as we all were watching it from the window with flashlights, until the dock pieces began to hit it. The dock pieces caused severe damage to my father's boat, as well as tipping it starboard until it started taking in water. It sank. We spent a full day bailing and trying to recover his fishing equipment. We even spent part of that day helping the owners of the B&B recover their dock pieces. In the end, they offered no apology, no help - not even a bilge pump - to my father in return. I even wrote them a letter explaining how their dock ruined our boat, as well as our vacation, and they never responded. For shame. Don't support their business. Also, they have something against dogs.
