We moved from the Sonoma/Napa Wine Country and to say the least, we are picky about our wines. Our two favorite Chardonnays are from Sonoma and are often the highlight at dinners. Recently a guest from Franklin, TN surprised us with a bottle of Luli Chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey, CA. And Wow! What a treat it was. In fact so good, that it is now #1 on our Chardonnay list. So now comes the hard part: trying to find a wine store that carries it. We searched high and low and even at the local Big Box Wine store they couldn't get it. After calling 12 stores in Knoxville ... Bingo!! Ashe's had it in stock and they put it aside for me. While visiting out of town I was looking for beer to pick up. This shop was not my first choice since they specialize more in wine. However, as it turned out it was a fantastic decision to pop in. Parking is very limited. Signage is there, but with the way the road is figured it would be easy to drive by. The lot and walks clean. I walked in with a friend and was immediately greeted by an older gentleman with a white beard. No it was not Saint Nick,but he was a kind old soul. He pointed out the beer area up front. It is tiny and they do have a cooler. TN law has the higher ABV items at liquor stores such as this one. The dark beers I enjoy are often over the 10% limit for beer shops to carry. I immediately spotted a gem of a beer. Oskar Blues Ten Fidy Barrel Aged and the clerk said no limit. I grabbed a few and was a super happy camper. The store has wine in the rear and liquor by the checkout. The shop is good size and I suspect you can find just about anything you want. The beer find was a big deal because it was a rare limited edition. Checkout was smooth and another clerk assisted me. A nice clean and friendly shop that I would return to. read more

Spent several days in Knoxville, Ashe's just happened to be the nearest liquor store when I searched for one. I went in hoping to get a nicer , top shelf Gin. To my surprise and delight they had like 30 varieties of Gin to choose from. So many that it was hard to pick. That's not really a problem though :) Staff was friendly and suggested visiting The local distillery . Wish I had a little liquor store like this near my home in California. read more

Very nice selection here of wines, liquor and all the trimmings. My mom and I found much that was new to us on a recent visit. We also found old favorites. The staff were very nice and helpful, even though we popped in right before closing time. Parking is limited. Prices are a little bit on the higher end. read more

This place is handy in a pinch, if you're looking for wine. But you have to know what you want. Usually there are three or four young guys working, who will greet you as you come in, but don't usually offer to help you find anything and quite frankly don't even look old enough to be selling wine. I've had a couple of good recommendations, but if I'm spending more than $25 on wine, you better be able to talk about it like you made it yourself. As to the other stuff, the spirits are overpriced and the beer selection is poor. You can go down the road to Toddy's and save a few bucks on your liquor, and/or pop into Bearden Beer Market for a much better array of beer. read more

Ashe's is a great family owned store. It's very rare that Thad or Mrs. Cox, or both, are not present to greet you. Ashe's maintains a significant wine collection. The staff is very informed and always happy to make a suggestion. Thad travels extensively studying wines around the country and abroad. If either Thad or Paul makes a suggestion for you, you will definitely be pleased. If Paul comes off a bit aloof, he can't help it ... he's a Yankee. His geographical handicap aside, Paul will always steer you toward the perfect wine for any occasion or meal. In addition, the staff at Ashe's will carry your purchase to your car. In fact, if you buy a case of wine they insist on carrying it to your car. It's store policy. And this may seem like no big deal, but the bags at Ashe's are not thin and prone to ripping. Nothing puts a damper on a great meal like getting out of the car and some cheap paper bag rips shattering your bottle of wine on the carport floor. In a nutshell, Ashe's is a great local family owned store. Try to remember that when the large grocery stores are peddling wine. read more

I stopped by after eating Mexican for their Wine tasting of the day. I tried their red wine and they gave us a thin slice of cheese. My friends and I thought it was a series of wine to taste but it was just one. I don't think the server took us seriously either or maybe she was having a bad day? read more

I worry our locally owned wine and alcohol shops will become extinct when our grocery stores sell wine. Ashe's is a delightful neighborhood wine and alcohol stop. It is well staffed and stocked. Best of all it is locally owned. Although, to contradict myself, as I generally do, I do love the convenience of running through the wine section at the grocery store. Tennessee is about 20 years behind the rest of the US when it comes to alcohol sales, and, come to think of it, a few other things, but I love it here and appreciate the complexity and contradictions. read more

Original review: 5/13/16 Be careful about doing your research if you are thinking about buying some of the higher-end wines here. I went in to buy a case of wine during their recent sale - 20% off of mixed cases. That's an ok deal by itself, though it really just brings their prices down to about what you can get online if you order from an out-of-state vendor. But when I got to the cash register, I was reminded that I also had received a "we miss you" email promising an additional 15% discount. So at a total of 35% off, I was really feeling like this was a great deal. Once I learned about the extra 15%, I decided I'd go ahead and splurge on a very expensive bottle for my cellar that I had been eyeing as I put together my case purchase. It had attracted my attention because the store's price label said "RP 100" right below the price, indicating that this wine had received a perfect 100-point score from one of the world's leading wine reviewers, Robert Parker. Parker rarely gives out this score, so I thought this must be a very special bottling. That one bottle cost as much as the case of 12 other wines combined, but I was excited about it as a collector's piece I could age. Well, I got home and decided to read up on my new baby, and it turns out that Parker actually gave it a *preliminary* rating of "97-100", which is very different from what the label at Ashe's had implied. Reviewers sometimes do early tastings of the best wines to forecast their potential, and while a preliminary rating of "97-100" is still outstanding, it is by no means the same as a final rating of "100". There is no way anyone from the store could have read Parker's review and honestly inferred that he gave it a perfect 100 score. I ended up keeping the bottle because I still think it'll be wonderful to enjoy in 10 - 30 years, but I definitely felt like I'd been mislead by the labeling in the store. I should have known better than to make an impulse buy on something this expensive without doing my research, but it was nearly closing time on the last day of their sale, so I had to make a decision on the spot. I'm posting this as a reminder to others thinking of making high-end purchases not to rely on the store's reporting of scores without verifying them. I have seen this once before in another local shop (McScrooge's), except in that case they put the correct score for the same wine *from a different vintage year* on their price label. The year they were selling was something like 4 points lower than the one from the review. In that case, I caught the error in the store and pointed it out to the sales guy. He looked at it and said "oh, thanks" and was going to just walk away and leave it, but I pushed back and said "aren't you going to take that label off now that you know it is wrong?" and he reluctantly did it. Makes me think this sort of misrepresentation could be standard practice in our local shops. Caveat emptor! Updated review: 8/25/16 This is an update to the review above from about three months ago. Two weeks ago today I received another email from Ashe's telling me "we miss you" and offering to give me 15% off my next purchase of any size with them if it was within the next two weeks. Then yesterday I received another email from them advertising a sale for 20% off of cases of wine. The only restriction listed on any of these promotions they sent me was that the 20% off sale did not apply to clearance items. So I went there today and spent a fair amount of time checking the claimed review scores of my selections in the store (see my previous review above). Got to the cash register, unloaded my cart, and showed the checkout guy my email with the "we miss you discount". He said they could not apply the discount to the sale prices. I asked him to show me where it said in either the sale ad or the "we miss you" email that I could not combine them, and he couldn't find it anywhere. I pointed out that there was the disclaimer in the ad about not applying to clearance items, which demonstrated that they hadn't forgotten to include disclaimers. And I pointed out that the last time I had been in during a sale with a "we miss you" discount (see above) they had given me the full 35% off. He called his manager on the phone, and came back saying they best they could do would be to extend the deadline on the "we miss you" discount another two weeks, but they would not allow me to use it on the sale. He said they would actually lose money on some of the bottles if they gave me the 35%. My response to that was it wasn't my fault they hadn't checked their business model before making the offers. I told them they shouldn't have wasted my time and that I would not be back, and walked out without purchasing anything. Needless to say, between this and the incident described above, I would discourage anyone from patronizing Ashe's. There are other wine stores in town with better selection anyway. read more

Hands down the best wine shop in town!! They probably have the most knowledgeable staff in the area.. they have tried everything they sell and only stock the ones deemed to be the best.. I've been in bigger stores that have every wine under the sun and I was overwhelmed and often disappointed. Ashe's is like my personal shopper for wine narrowing down to the best selections at any price point!! The staff is friendly, clean cut and courteous. If I had a complaint it would be that I was offered assistance too many times while I was there. Service, advise and atmosphere at Ashe's are the reasons why I will never shop at a grocery store for wine. read more
