Normally, when I get dragged to a fabric or crafting store by my Wife of the 1000 Projects, it's absolute torture. While I can't say that my visit to Asheville Cotton was the most fun I've ever had, I was just blown away by the sheer variety of fabrics they had. There are around a dozen tightly-packed aisles, each one with shelves simply jam-packed with different varieties of fabrics, all with different prints. I imagine it would be a quilter's dream. I've got no occasion to be inspecting or looking for fabric of any sort, but I still found myself ooh-ing and aah-ing at the sheer variety offered here. They also sell sewing and embroidery machines. I knew they could be expensive, but did you know that a full-featured sewing and embroidery machine for home use can run $12,000? Neither did I. The employees were very kind and helpful, and let you go about your browsing without tapping you on the shoulder every three minutes to ask if you need help finding something. Unfortunately I can't comment on the relative value of the place, as I have no frame of reference for what fabrics can or should cost. There were also a bunch of awesome quilts hanging around the place, which were part of a voting contest that we got to weigh in on as we checked out. They were taking votes for overall winner, as well as a subset of five quilts made by first-time quilters going for a type of "Rookie" award. They've got tons of fabric but not a lot in the way of patterns. I'm old enough to remember when quilt shops had patterns to inspire you. Not so much anymore anywhere. read more

Got to Asheville Saturday night, looked for quilt shops I wanted to visit there weren't many that popped up but from the photos on Google I was looking forward to this one. I travel and often spend $$$$ at every quilt shop I go to. Google said it was open on Monday I drive 20 minutes from where I'm staying in the opposite direction of home and they are closed mondays. This store is amazing! A true dream come true for any quilter, sewist or just general fabric collector. The staff are super friendly, and the selection is massive. There are fabrics for every season and every color imaginable. It's mostly quilting cotton, but they do have a few apparel fabrics, particularly flannels. Highly recommend stopping in here if you are in the area! read more

Visited Asheville with a quilter friend, so of course we had to check out the local fabric store. I was a little let down with the *very* limited flannel section (one small shelf, basically) but did walk away with a yard of cute fabric. I had to hold myself back from purchasing pretty much everything in this store seeing as I do not know how to sew and do not own a sewing machine, but I wanted to buy yards and yards of fabric to send to my sewing friends/family to make things for me. They had a surprisingly large selection of trademarked (??) characters, like the Very Hungry Caterpillar and Disney items. I loooooove their candy themed fabric, the pirate ships, and so on. Again, I wish they had more flannel, but I was really impressed with everything else. read more

Great quilt shop with tons of fabric choices but the best part was the friendly people. Now I have more fabric for my stash!!! Oh boy!

The ladies were super helpful, first on the phone, and then in person when I arrived. They helped me diagnose the problem with my entry level sewing machine and even offered to order the part I needed. I wish I'd had more time to look at fabrics, because there were plenty! read more

I have never written a negative review but want to warn people. I moved to the area with a Bernina machine that needed oiling and cleaning, I patiently waited for a time to open to bring in machine. I never received a receipt for machine, waited 3 wks to get a call to tell me that several buttons were not working, everything was working when I shut the machine down to bring in for service. The conversation did not go very well, I was told to pick it up as he was not going to work on it and he hung up. Needless to say I felt compelled to verify serial # before I left shop. I am extremely disappointed in this shop and will never return. I could say more but I have since taken my machine to someone else who states that he could find nothing wrong with the buttons in question??? Again I will never return read more

You guys. This place. When you walk in you see a lot of fabric, but what you don't see is all the fabric *behind* that fabric. And then more behind that. They've got holiday stuff, kid stuff, theme stuff, traditional prints, fantastic modern selections. And the batiks, holy moly. They're beyond. The shop is well organized by color and theme and they have multiple colorways of lots of designs. The staff are terrifically helpful, cheerful, and laid back. There's a nice class area in the back as well. If you're a member of a guild, bring your card for a discount! This is the most impressive shop I ever been to and makes me wish I lived here. I love this shop! The batting and thread/needle collection for quilting is great and the girls I talked with were so helpful and knowledgeable. When I left, one of them said to me, "Welcome Home". I wish I could've spent more time in this store.. I was very on the fence whether or not I liked this shop. I wasn't greeted when I walked in and there were 3 people working so there was no excuse at least one of them could've acknowledged me. The store is so packed full of fabric that it's even on the floor, because they have so much the selection is great except they don't carry any Moda fabric which seems odd for a store with an otherwise great selection. They have a large Bernina selection, so large that maybe they should give up some of the space to get their fabric off the floor. I have two issues with the fabric being on the floor, if I were elderly I'd think it'd be difficult to bend over to look at fabric sitting on the floor and for fabric that's $11+/yard it seems dirty to have it sitting on the ground. Their row by row is one of my favorite I've picked up this summer and I can't wait to add it to my quilt! read more

As a beginning quilter I went in looking for advice on needles, and left questioning my decision to ever start quilting. They asked what type of machine I use, and three different employees told me (in so many words) that my machine is a piece of crap and although Singer used to be a good brand, it's now a punchline. I get that they are Bernina dealers and it is their job to persuade people to buy high-end machines, but there are far better ways to go about it. I would think quilters would be happy to support someone new to their hobby, but instead I left feeling like I wore last year's dress to the prom. read more

Huge selection of quilting cottons in the most glorious colors. I could spend all day in here. There were quite a few other people shopping when I was there. I like that. Great selection of novelty and seasonal fabrics. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. Could have been more professional in attire. We had to look for kits--why aren't they right by the sample? As a quilter, I enjoy looking at fabric/quilt shops when I travel, but I'm always disappointed because I live near Asheville Cotton Company and that has me spoiled! They have an ENORMOUS fabric selection and have great machines as well. If you are looking for Moda, you won't find it here, but they have practically everything else including a ton of batiks, a lot of flannel, some solids and blenders. They also have a decent selection of wide backings. If you are looking for a cutesy store with quilting knick-knacks and such, you won't find it here. If you are looking for the fabric motherload, you've found it. read more

Asheville Cotton does have great quilting fabrics, but DON'T buy a Bernina sewing machine from them. I have had constant problems with mine - over three years they have not been able to fix the problem and will now not provide a solution. They suggested I send it back to Bernina (for another $500+ fee). They offered me one quarter of the value toward another machine! That is NOT a solution - they obviously are not interested in keeping customers. Why would I now want another Bernina when they won't support the first one? Buy your machine where someone cares about their customers. read more

I love this place! I have just ventured into the world of quilting over the last year. They are super knowledgeable and offer classes to teach beginners where to start. Wow! What a selection! Came during a shop hop so pretty busy. Staff seemed friendly although the shop should have a dress code! Eeeck the tattoos were pretty gross and the nose rings or whatever the piercings were-were all a bit of a turn off. Not very professional. But again nice fabrics. read more

I called on Wednesday 9/2 and inquired about the purchase of an embroidery machine, Bethany called me back the next day 9/3. She quoted me $5400 plus tax (the total she said was $5883.93) and said the price was good until October 30th. I asked her about 60 day 0% financing, she replied that she needed to talk to the owner. On Friday 9/4 I called her back (she was just getting ready to call me), Bethany told me the owner said the price was $5400 with 0% financing for 60 months and we spoke about the fact that I already had the required Sewing and More CC. I told Bethany I would be in on Saturday to purchase the machine. When I arrived Saturday it seemed like the store was in chaos, I guess it was due to a sale. I spoke with Bethany who proceeded to ring up the purchase and I verified again about the financing. Bethany stopped and said she needed to call the owner, went in the back room and was gone a long amount of time. When she returned, the price of the machine went to $5999!! She told me that this was what the owner said and said to me "it's only $500.00 more". I am writing this because that is BAD BUSINESS!!! You do not quote one price, then when a customer comes in give another! It's also bad business to not honor what you already committed to. So, that owner lost not only my sale of $5400 and any additional items that I would have purchased but lost my friends sale who was with me. She ended up buying an $8000 machine! So for "only $500" you missed out on $13,400 plus of business! I hope you think it was worth it! read more

Love this store! I have shopped with Asheville Cotton for well over 10 years. I have purchased both Babylock and Burnina machines with no disappointments - and they get used a lot!. The fabric is as the name states, only cotton but a tremendous selection of that. If you are interested in sewing you definitely need to check this store out. Robin always has plenty of professional staff on hand to help and inspire. Always busy but from my observation, nobody goes unnoticed or lacks assistance and the staff is friendly and very well educated about sewing. read more

I recently bought a Bernina 790 at Asheville Cotton. Love it. It developed a problem with the automatic thread cutter. Took the machine back. New part ordered and it was worse than before. I didn't even have to ask - I WAS GIVEN A BRAND NEW 790. Picked it up today. Love Asheville Cotton. I always find Karen, Robin, Chip and the rest of the staff helpful. read more

This is the first Yelp review I have ever written. Last Tuesday, I planned my trip through the mountains of NC with the idea of a quilt shop stop at a store I had never visited - Asheville Cotton Co. The store was very busy with a class just finishing up as I arrived, so perhaps none of the multiple employees spoke to me because they were so busy. However, given that on their website they refer to themselves as a "tourist trap" I thought they would be more welcoming to someone they didn't recognize. I stood in line at a cutting table for several minutes while the associate continued to talk to the person ahead of me although she had already been helped. Then another associate asked me if I needed fabric cut, I said yes, and made the mistake of thinking that she wanted me to come to her side of the table. She then said, oh no, I'm not going to cut it, she will help you, but you have to speak up if you need fabric cut! This was not said in a joking or friendly manner, but more of an irritated, talking to me like a child manner. When I later told my husband about my encounter, he said I should have just told them I had changed my mind and left the store. I am not a shy person, and I have visited quilt stores all over this country and buy fabric to add to my stash on a regular basis. I am also not someone who complains or demands special treatment. However, I did not experience the "friendly staff" that others have mentioned. As I said, maybe I caught them at a bad time, but speaking to a customer so rudely is just not appropriate. I have been to stores where associates may not greet you, but this was unexpectedly rude. If I were a new quilter, I would be shy about going to another store given the lack of welcome I received in this store. As for the selection of fabrics, there is a great quantity, but some of my favorites were missing - like Kaffe Fassett, and if they were there, I wouldn't know it because as mentioned, no one helped me or even spoke to me (except to criticize). read more
