There is a wide variety of art supplies available in this store. I was specifically looking for Encaustic wax and pigments. Which is a little less well known painting process and not supplies that can be easily found at Michaels. They had everything I needed to get started with this type of painting. The Asheville art Supply store has lots of really great high quality supplies available. I was visiting from out of the area and extremely impressed with the selection. I don't know if I've ever been somewhere else that had open stock Conte pastel pencils, Finetec watercolor, and Pan Pastels. Also a huge selection of any kind of paper. So excited to receive a holiday gift card to Cheap Joe's Art Stuff in Asheville. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. I'm excited to have a local option rather than the big box 'craft' stores! Bought seven different colors of the Cheap Joe's acrylic paint to try and also purchased a few different sizes of stretched canvas. Got home to try out the paint and was presently surprised at how well it flowed for the price. Will definitely be back very soon! read more

I was lucky to be in Asheville NC, which has a brick and mortar store. There were items, such as an easel, that are difficult to judge on-line. CHRIS JEHLY helped me not only with this but answered numerous questions and showed me how certain items could be used in more than one way. I like the on-line store but there's nothing like having a fellow artist help you in person! read more

This review is for Cheap Joe's Asheville store at 829 Riverside Drive. Although I live just north of Asheville, I normally drive to Suburban Paint Company in Greenville, SC to get what I need or buy online from Dick Blick or B&H Photo. I don't think Cheap Joes is that cheap, they don't carry Somerset Velvet paper or Epson Fine Art papers which I prefer, and I don't have to deal with the aggressive panhandlers and vagrants that seem to be everywhere in Asheville. Last Friday, January 21, 2021, I ran out of Fabriano Bristol for a project I was working on, didn't have time to drive to Greenville, so I went to Cheap Joes. Walked in, the woman behind the counter asked me if I had a mask (I didn't), asked me if I wanted one, said yes and took it. Walked back through the store and before I had a chance to put it on, she said loudly "Please put your mask on". I did, didn't complain, just got what I was looking for and left. Not debating the pro or cons of masks (it was not the N95 mask), but that's the last time I'll be shopping at Cheap Joes, I can get what I need at Suburban Paint Company in Greenville (no masks required) or online, better prices and selection and I don't have to be bothered with "Karen". read more

Cheap Joes has practically everything a fine artist might need, the staff is friendly too. You'll find the usual suspects at Joes; quality brands of canvas, paints and a moleskins galore. However, Cheap Joes appears to be completely disinterested in supporting commercial artist & designers who blow through costly consumables, such as 3D printer filament, laser engraving materials, etc. Once again, I left CJ's empty-handed, which is sad because I can expense my large orders. They are also ignoring the growing cosplay segment. They don't even carry EVA foam, foam clay, etc. Joe, if your reading this - please consider the other creative market segments that your completely ignoring. I own a design agency in town and enjoy support local business. Sadly I'm spending thousands on Amazon and Blick. Overall, I think Cheap Joes a wonderful cultural asset. That said, they're proudly behind the times. read more

Had the best time here!! People are really helpful and clearly know their art stuff. Things are clearly laid out and marked with prices. I would come here anytime I need great paper, canvas, paint, supplies for embossing. I even found the gold leaf I was needing. They have a gorgeous selection of brushes that are arranged beautifully. Just got notified that water color paints I ordered in February just got sent out from warehouse. My Art class is finished! Come on! PLUS turns out I have to pay to return the paints that it's too late to use. Don't bother buying from Cheap Joe's. With all the shipping costs, the only thing cheap is the management and policies. Cheap seems about right... my partner and I - while running pre-Christmas errands - managed to each buy a $100 gift voucher for the same friend. An honest mistake, and we'd both given the same recipient name for the shop's record, so no disputing that. But when we asked if we could get a refund for one of them, we were told "they're good for five years and it's not our policy to give refunds". We won't use this place again. Buyer beware. read more

I love their online store. By all means--shop there. I was desperately hoping for a great art supply store in Asheville. The NC owned aspect makes me want to shop for supplies here. It is just not great. The selection is extremely limited. The prices are higher than they are online and they don't price match their online ads. They do have high quality items and the prices are not ridiculous. I didn't find any "great deals." I just really hoped for better. The "Cheap Joe's energy/vibe" isn't really in this store. Maybe that will change after it has been established a little longer--I hope so! There is a fun and funky ?collaborative? mural/painting near the restroom though! I can't say enough good things about this place. It's my grand daughter's "go-to" place for art supplies. I live in California and when her birthday came around I ordered a gift card to Cheap Joe's and put it in a box with some other gifts and sent it on it's way via UPS. The package got lost by UPS and they are refusing to admit to anything nor compensate for the loss. Excuses is all I get. However when contacting Cheap Joes about the gift card that was in the "lost" box they immediately took the steps to replace the card. What a stand-up, honest company. Hope everyone rewards them by doing business with them on my and my granddaughters behalf! read more

While the selection is not as extensive as the online store they still have nearly everything I need. I prefer talking to actual people and getting recommendations for new products. I've taught art and been a working artist for 35 years and I still enjoy learning new things! read more

So, they havent had their grand opening celebration yet but I've been celebrating already. I've been there several times so far and am so happy to say -- Cheap Joe's is exactly what we needed in Asheville. Their prices are great, they have quality items and a decent selection (that seems to grow every time we go in), and the staff seems super friendly.
