K2 Studio did not stand behind the products they sold to me. I bought a 4 piece bedroom set from K2…read moreStudio in 2019. All four pieces were built improperly with alignment issues. At first, Kim sounded like she was going to help. She acknowledged that there were issues from this particular manufacturer, and that the brand was switching to a different manufacturer in 2020 due to them. We talked about the possibility of getting a replacement from the new manufacturer, but that it would take time to get the product going with the new assembly line. Eventually she offered a partial refund instead. I wanted to get an estimate for repairing the furniture so that I could assess whether the refund was a fair offer. Kim offered to send a repairman to my house to do an estimate. Up until this point, Kim seemed like a trustworthy person so I accepted this proposal. The repairman she sent wrote a report saying that there was nothing wrong with the furniture. He claimed that the gaps were at or under 1/16", but he took no measurements. There are 16 places with gaps larger than 1/16", and they are as large as 3/8". I used a depth gauge to take these measurements, and I offered to send video evidence to Kim showing the depth gauge measurements so that she could see that I was using the tool correctly. You can see the issues I'm describing in the attached photos. I spoke to another furniture manufacturer to ask what industry standards for wood manufacturing tolerances were, and I was told that they were 30/1000" for moving parts, and 10/1000" for non-moving parts. Thus, even 1/16" is outside of spec. Kim also tried to claim that humidity explains the gaps, but the manufacturer I spoke with said that furniture shouldn't have gaps this severe from humidity. I own other wooden furniture in the same house (same humidity conditions) and it does not have these issues. Kim later forwarded me an e-mail from her repairman to her where he admitted that he hadn't taken any measurements. Despite his admission, and despite the evidence I submitted to her, she declined to do anything about our furniture. She also used the repairman's report to close a credit card claim that my wife and I had opened since Kim was taking too long to solve our issue. I recommend staying away from this merchant. The styles are beautiful and enticing, and you might be lucky enough to get furniture that isn't damaged. However, if you get furniture that doesn't meet industry quality standards you may have an experience like I did. It's not worth the risk - there are plenty of stores around North Carolina that offer similar styles but that support their customers. If you like a piece in their showroom, I recommend finding another merchant that sells that piece.

They also offer workshops and studio space. The employees were so friendly and welcoming. They were celebrating International Women's Day when I visited and invited customers to each sew a button on a dress. They were also dyeing yarn in the back. It's really great to see such community!!

Asheville has no shortage of magical spaces that kind of transcend space/time when you wander them. This one is a doozy! Walk down the stone earth entry to the grotto below and tell me you didn't just schloop through an unseen hole in the veil only to emerge into someplace much further than it looked from "out there." It's like the TARDIS of nurseries, it's bigger on the inside. A bit north of UNC Asheville on Merrimon, the only negative thing that I could mention is that parking is a little tight and close to that road, but that's a pretty common gripe in the 828, but I had to mention it for credibility. I mean this is a Yelp! review fercryinoutloud it can't all be pixies and rainbows. They have pots. And plants. Indoor and outdoor types. Annuals and perennials. Gifts and creativity abound, if you can abide. The staff that I encountered were big on hospitality, helpfulness, and that Southern Appalachian humility that I respectfully embrace. We left with a giant clay pot and a half-price Aloe that is entering the rehabilitation porch at home tomorrow at sun-up. Oh, there is a chicken coop just a bit farther out back, past the little creek and through the back greenhouse. Totally worth a peek while you're meandering about. From the looks of it, this place is evolving and growing. I can't wait to see it next time I come. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

I stopped here twice. When I got here I wandered around upstairs and although many of the studios were closed, most or all of the artists had works decorating the walls. The first place I stopped was at the studio of Galen Frost Bernard, because he happened to be opening the door of his studio and welcomed me in. It was really fun to talk to him about his background, his art, some of the elements in his pieces, and learning about a few prints that I was particularly interested in. I ended up purchasing one of them, and getting the name of one of his completed originals so that maybe I can ask about getting a print of it later. He also painted the mural on the walls between his studio and the Art Garden. Next I stopped in Lori Portka's studio, and she was one that I had originally planned to visit. She has really vibrant, joyous paintings, and also has pillows, cards, prayer-type flags, wood prints, and so on. I bought a print of a piece called Abundance Goddess, which I felt an affinity towards because I have similar coloring and it felt really special to see myself in art. I also got a pillow and several cards, because I love greeting cards. Her work certainly brightens up my home. Sarah Faulkner is an artist whose work I saw at Woolworth Walk, and she has a studio here but currently, during the pandemic, is only open by appointment. I stopped by her studio to peek in the windows anyway, and also caught a glimpse of her neighbor's work. When I returned the next day, I ended up buying two original pieces by Elizabeth Carrington Porritt, as well as a small print. I'd love to have a larger original by Elizabeth one day--perhaps a commission--and a work by Faulkner as well. In fact, I already plan to purchase a giclee print of her work 12 Karats to put in my kitchen. I rounded out my visit to Riverview Station by visiting The High Fiber. They make hand-dyed textiles. I bought several flour sack towels; I love the beautiful, vibrant colors that are used in this work. I'd really love to purchase some napkins as well, because when the pandemic started I moved to reusable placemats and napkins. I'll be watching their site and instagram for when they come back in stock (particularly the adorable bear ones!). I didn't get to do all I wanted whilst I was in Asheville--in particular, I didn't get to visit all the artist studios I wish I had. So I certainly expect to return, and I will definitely find myself wandering Riverview Station again. Hopefully with as large a car, and with bigger pockets!
