There are so many things that can go wrong with a blind selection but this one had not one disappointment! The house was built in the early 1900's and has been restored to the grandeur the original owner envisioned. Alan and Patti are the owners and they have worked hard to fill the house with furniture and art appropriate to the age. I believe every guest will be pleased when they first walk in the door. The bedding is very good and very comfortable made up with nice linens not high count cotton thread but very nice. The breakfast served each morning is wonderful. We had scrambled egg, perfectly done, bacon and toast. Fresh fruit and a fluffy croissant filled with chocolate and whipped cream. Sound decadent? It is! The next morning we had quiche with cinnamon raisin toast, fresh strawberries and yes yet another croissant. Just wonderful but breakfast was not the best part. The best part is the caring attentive inn keepers..! Patti and Alan are welcoming, caring and just great people. We talked and the conversation took on the style of friends conversing not acquaintances exchanging small talk. There is an art to that and each of them possess the prompt skills to engage strangers. Little did I expect a PBS TV series to make such an indelible impact on my life, but "A Chef's…read moreLife" has made palpable not only the inner workings of Vivian Howard's Chef and the Farmer, an upscale restaurant in the small North Carolina town of Kinston, but also the key local people who supply the high quality of the food being prepared. Prominent on the show is the congenial farmer Warren Brothers who along with his wife Jane decided to turn their charming home in pastoral La Grange into a B&B. Once I got wind of this, I made a reservation for a private room for my partner and myself in April, so we could frankly meet Warren and see where several of the key scenes on the series took place. What I didn't expect was the overwhelming generosity of our hosts in providing an experience that will remain parked comfortably in my memory. First, Jane was extraordinarily kind in ensuring we had a good time that she connected me with Vivian's wondrous assistant Holley. Holley took us to several places of interest in Kinston like Mother Earth Brewing, the Buy Local art gallery, and the newly refurbished O'Neil Hotel. As Jane was unfortunately out of town when we arrived, Warren took over and immediately made us feel at home. He not only took the time to stay up and chat with us after our marathon feast at Chef and The Farmer, but he asked Lillie to come over early in the morning to make her famous biscuits (photo: http://bit.ly/1G870iS). We already adored her from the series, and as it turned out, she is even funnier and warmer in person. As for our accommodations, the 1853-restored farmhouse just felt comfortable the moment we stepped through the back porch door. Our bedroom was warm and spacious, an ideal setting for the claps of thunder we heard through the night. They certainly made sure to stock the bathroom with every amenity. We loved all the family photos and paintings on almost every wall because you really felt the love in their family. I even thought it was heartwarming to see a huge "Breakfast at Tiffany's" movie poster on the wall since I am such an Audrey Hepburn fan. How did they know (photo: http://bit.ly/1bc4k92)? Oh well, I guess that's what family is all about, and that's what Warren and Jane are genuinely all about, making their guests feel like they are part of their family. It is decorated in a French theme and has a lot of charm throughout. We were lucky enough to stay in the room adjacent to the sitting room. It was very spacious and had a huge bathroom with a claw foot tub and pedestal sink. The locations of the French House is also great. It is in a historic part of Wilmington and taking a walk around the neighborhood shows how rich in history this part of town is. It is also walking distance (4 blocks) from the river and a quick 15 minute ride to Wilmington Beach. What makes The French House 5 stars is that it is run by a wonder hostess, Janice. She is kind and accommodating to her guests' needs. We arrived and found a fruit plate and mini refrigerator stocked with waters and soda. She gave us maps of downtown and recommendations of where to eat. She knew our names before we even introduced ourselves and always made us feel at home. When I burned my feet at the beach, she searched high and low for some aloe, even making phone calls to neighbors to find some. The breakfasts she provided always included some fresh berries, yogurts, homemade scones, and some sort of pastry (one day we had croissants, one day we had blueberry strudel). My only wish is that there were some kind of protein provided! We had a truly wonderful stay here at the French House. My only complaint was the other guest that was staying there at the same time as us...she had a guest stay late one night and rather than sitting on the front porch or in her room, she sat in the sitting room right in front of our room and kept us up for a good portion of the night. However, I will still give this place 5 stars because Janice and the house itself were excellent. We will be back :)

Only negative was the wonky shower faucet but there was plenty of hot water. It was just hard to regulate. If we're ever in the area again we'll stay here!
