I was searching for a hotel as it was dark and I just got gas in Dillion SC and sat in my car searching on line. Everything decent too far and motels did not look great BUT - The Columns B&B was rated 5 stars and was only two miles from gas station! Incredible BB beautiful and the hosts Michael and Mark so gracious ! The house is outstanding - really must see! And decorated beautifully!! What a delightful stay. It was a random selection as a halfway stop on a trip but it turned out to be an excellent choice. The rooms were beautiful and period decorated with incredible antiques selected by the owners, Michael and Mark. The owners made us feel like family right away and we shared some fun conversations. My favorite spot was the breezy balcony porch with the rockers. The bed was comfortable with fine linens. The full delicious breakfast was worth the stay. As a small town, Dillon had little to offer but the break from the hustle and bustle of life was worth the trip! read more

Wow, wow, wow. Talked to the owner to get a reservation and seemed low key but not lots of choices in Dillon so I stayed and holy cow - I would stay here, if it were in any city. Fabulous, fabulous house and such classy elegant bedrooms (with private baths). Top notch, gallery level, antiques throughout the house and so much beauty abound. Just an amazing vibe in a historical southern B and B with a fresh, delicious breakfast in the morning - and they served it on my schedule (which I appreciated). Simply amazing! We just spent 2 nights at the Columns Bed and Breakfast, and it was a great experience. 5-stars is not enough to explain all the great things this place has to offer. The Bed (bedroom): The entire house is decorated beautifully. I believe Michael said he picked out all the decorations and antiques throughout the house. With many areas throughout the house to sit back and relax, this is a perfect place for a relaxing weekend away, or a romantic getaway. Our room was pristine! We later found out that they even iron the bedsheets before you arrive. This shows the extra effort they put into making sure your room is top notch. This not only make the bed look perfect, but kills anything that you might not want in the bed. The bathroom is also amazing, and the bathtub includes bath salts and bubble bath stuff to take time and relax even more. I cannot keep trying to explain how beautiful the rooms are, so I suggest checking out their website to see what I am talking about. I am a tech guy, so a B&B might not sound like a place to stay connected, but they have free wireless internet, as well as free Netflix and Pandora radio on their TV's! The Breakfast: Delicious! Both mornings were cam downstairs and had fresh orange juice and coffee waiting for us, along with some yogurt with fresh blueberries and granola. Upon finishing the yogurt, Michael brought out a very generously sized plate of the some of the freshest and well arranged fruit. It included cut strawberries, cantaloupe, kiwi, star fruit, etc.. Accompanying the fruit the first day was home-made eggs benedict, which was also very good. The second day we each got a vegetable omelet with tomatoes, onion, peppers, etc.. We also each had an English muffin with some wonderful lemon jam/jelly. These guys know how to cook and to serve their guest! I'm not sure what time they wake up to start getting breakfast ready, but you can tell how much time and thought goes into this. Also... they will make it fresh each morning, depending on what time you decide to wake-up. Other: I planned our trip to the Columns for Valentine's day weekend, which was also our anniversary (dating, not yet married). It was also the time and place that I proposed. I called them up before arriving, and they had champagne and a dozen red roses waiting in our room when we arrived. It worked out perfectly, and she said yes! I will always remember the Columns B&B for this alone... plus we will definitely be back because of the great experience and hospitality they gave us. 5-Stars... easily! Don't believe me? This is an antique furnishings collection disguised as a bed and breakfast. We were given a very generous tour. The room was spacious and of course, the comped bottle of wine is a nice touch. If you are traveling north on I-95 lodging is slim pickings after Florence so this is a good option. Only a couple miles off the interstate and when you leave you can cut north to hit I-95 at the NC border. read more

Noticed there are still only six reviews. When we stayed at The Columns years ago, it had just opened. There were only six 5 star reviews, since it had recently opened, we thought we would give it a try. However, I was so creeped out from the experience, I've literally been afraid to post a review. When we arrived it was pointed out to us, "look the same picture that's in your room, is also out here in this book (on the glass table) outside your room." What does that even mean!? Plus, it was a creepy picture of a werewolf tearing off a young girls top. All I know is I had trouble sleeping. In the morning, I felt like we were sitting across from a two way mirror in the dining room. The Nikon camera in the corner of the room on a tripod, was "from a wedding." But the worst was that a habit I have of flipping my hair back, which I had done in the privacy of our bathroom before breakfast was mirrored back to me as a part of a story, during breakfast. I have never written a review like this, where we were seriously concerned. Since this experience, my husband and I don't go to Bed and Breakfasts anymore. read more

In my search for a hotel in the Lumberton area (short work-related stay), I stumbled on the amazing reviews for The Columns on www.bedandbreakfast.com (definitely check them out if you haven't seen them). Being that it was only a 30-ish minute drive from Lumberton (also 30-ish minute drive from Florence, SC), we decided to give it a try. I am so glad we did! Our experience was wonderful from the moment of arrival to the moment of departure. The home is as beautiful and stately as the pictures show and it was fascinating to hear the details of the restoration from Michael, as we recently bought a 1940's era home and are both interested in that topic. We thought the bottle of wine he brought us upon arrival was a wonderful touch and it started our evening off in a relaxing and enjoyable way... and the breakfast we enjoyed prior to departure was fantastic. I have food allergies, which he independently inquired about (not many people do, even in boutique hotels/bed and breakfasts) and gladly accommodated. We had wonderful breakfast meat/vegetable omelets and an amazing spread of fresh fruit (cantaloupe, honeydew, kiwi, strawberries and peaches). Michael even packed our fruit up to take with us as we couldn't finish our entire breakfast - and wished us safe travels. It's just so apparent that he loves what he does and we thoroughly enjoyed being his guests! Also, it's worth noting that a photograph of The Columns was used as the cover in a book about bed and breakfast design - there are some amazing bed and breakfasts featured within it, from all over the country, so that's really quite an honor. My family reunion was held in Dillon, SC this weekend and my parents, brother and myself stayed at "The Columns" B & B. This was truly a royal treatment atmosphere. The greeting upon our arrival was just as warm & inviting as the entire home which displayed historical figurines, antique furnishings collections and the overall appearance was elegant. The owner (Michael) prepared our breakfast each morning and ensured all items were supportive of any allergies among us. He felt like part of the family almost immediately upon meeting him. This is truly an experience that will never be forgotten. I highly recommend this B & B and provide it 10 stars!!! Five stars isn't enough for what you receive from this experience. read more

If I could give no stars, I would. I called April 20th to make a reservation at The Columns. Apparently, there was a problem with the credit card used for the reservation; however, I was not notified until April 25th that there was a problem. The owner claimed that some lady, I don't know who, tried to call me all weekend. That is a lie, as I have my phone with me constantly, and I had no voicemails from anyone from The Columns, nor did I have any missed calls from a phone number with an 843 area code. The only voicemail I had was from the owner when he called on April 25th. When I called back, the owner claimed that since no one was able to get in touch with me regarding the credit card, the room was open, but I could not make another reservation, even though I had another card that worked just fine. So not only is there supposedly another employee there who lied about trying to contact me, the owner believed her lies and went right along with them. The customer service had been great up until that point. The owner stated he didn't care if I posted a negative review about his establishment, and started talking over me and interrupting me as I was trying to ask a question. He clearly doesn't value his establishment's reputation, or his own. So, while I got sucked in by all of the positive reviews, clearly all that glitters is not gold. Customer service should be impeccable at all times, regardless of the situation. Dishonesty and rudeness will always be the demise any business. read more
