The house is in a bit of a shamble and could definitely use some TLC (the Trustees of Reservations, which own the property, seem to do better with outdoor landscapes). I had a moderately good tour of this interesting house. Those who enjoy architecture will be intrigued by the story of the home and its construction stages. I was more interested in the life and work of Bryant and the tour was moderately successful. I was most pleased, however, at the end of the tour when the guide noted she likes to make sure people leave the home knowing some of Bryant's poetry. So, she handed each of us a copy of one of his poems and read from it. This was a touching but important part of the experience - it was a poet's house, after all, so it's only appropriate we should be treated to poetry!

No longer allows vehicular traffic, but foot traffic is allowed. And easy drive to the Chelsea Royal Diner right up the road. Stopped here w best friend Pots & Pans, who drove up from Astoria NY and met me in northern CT. All I kept hearing was he wished that his beloved wife, the breathtaking Maria, was with him cuz he wanted to rename it "The Kissing Bridge". Get a room!

The bridge is off the road a bit. Easily visible if you turn your head and look. Once you cross the bridge you are in the personal drive way of the farm owners. They happened to be sitting out in lawn chairs when we drove over. Which was a bit awkward. But we just asked if they had maple syrup for sale and they pleasantly directed us to the self serve bridge. So we turned around, drove back over the bridge and bought our obligatory maple syrup. The whole inside of the be was lined with historical signs, syrup and other things for sale. A pretty cool set up. The owners were really nice. We were obviously tourists. City folk. But the owners just took us in stride. Turns out the maple syrup is damn good. Better than any of that stuff you buy at Christmas Tree Shops.

Place was not crowded at all, and there were a variety of apples to pick from. We appreciated that the rows of apple trees were labeled, you don't often find that at other orchards. Scenic views also (and the ride to the orchard was very scenic too). Staff was super-friendly, and the apple cider is the BOMB (we took a sip before departing and realized how awesome it was, so I ran back in to purchase another 1/2 gallon). Also, we picked up two butternut squash for only a dollar a piece -- a savings of at least $5, and it tasted way better than what you get in a supermarket, We will definitely be back again !

Extra Extra read all about it" (Pete Townsend) When I was a kid, a lot of black and white movies from the 30's and 40's were standard fare for television. A lot of those movies had scenes of young newsboys selling newspapers on the streets yelling "Extra! Extra! Read all about it". Nowadays, the only time you see newspapers being sold on the streets are by homeless people who catch you at a red light or an on-ramp. This unique Newsboy Monument is located on a triangular patch of grass bounded by Maple Street, Silver Street and Newsboy Monument Lane in Great Barrington, MA. It was dedicated on October 10, 1895 by a gentleman named Colonel William L. Brown. Now that makes perfect sense, because he was part owner of the New York Daily News. I read that Brown thought of the newsboys as "unsung heroes" in the success of his newspaper and the industry in general. The passage of the decades and the advances in technology have made this occupation all but extinct. It's a very cool 5' tall bronze statue of a newsboy perched on a 10' high granite base. He is dressed in the style of the day, with a cap, jacket, knickers and very long socks. He holds up a copy of a newspaper in his raised right hand and clutches a bundle of newspapers under his left arm. The statue sits on a fountain that was designed as a watering trough with several fountainheads to quench the thirst of thirsty dogs, horses, and people. A near bronze plaque is inscribed: Newsboy Statue and Fountains Presented to the town of Great Barrington by Colonel William L. Brown on October 10, 1895. Colonel brown was a resident of this neighborhood and part-owner of the first New York Daily News. It was Colonel Brown's wish to create a lasting monument honoring hard-working newspaper carriers. It's a nice piece of history commemorating an era where people learned about the news before radio, TV, and Facebook came along.

The Mission House was built with the intent of teaching local indigenous people christianity. Built…read morein 1742, missionary John Seargent lived there with his wife. Previously located across the road from Naumkeag, Mable Choate purchased the Mission house in the 1920's and moved it downtown for more people to learn about Indigenous peoples history in Stockbridge. The building is maintained by The Trustees group. This house is open during the warmer months for a self guided 'tour'. As there are only two rooms to see, it's a quick stop. The gardens are open to the public year round at any time. They do offer house tours about once a month. Check their website for dates, times and how to reserve your spot. We wandered their gardens on a day the house was closed. There are signs with information and one of them highlights a walking tour with some of the town's history. You can walk the town stopping at each site and watch the videos or enjoy the tour from home. It was interesting and we walked up into the woods behind town hall to see some of the historic sites there. Before the tour we had no idea they existed so kudos. We returned to the house on a day it was open for a self tour. There was no docent on site so we couldn't ask questions. The two rooms to view have plexiglass doors so you can only see them. There was a bit of information in the house and barn to read about local indigenous history which sometimes seems agressive. I can understand that. We all know generally how Indigenous people were trated historically. This is the story of Stockbridge. The three stars is based solely on my disappointment of not having more access to the house and more information. The gardens are a lovely, quiet spot with a medicinal garden area and the house is well maintained. If in the area, the guided tour may be quite interesting. Hopefully someone will leave a review with more info on that.
