I've been working with Ashley since I was pregnant in 2015. After injuring myself with the loosey goosey pregnancy hips, I wanted to work with a coach who could keep me fit and injury free while pregnant. I moved here exactly 15 months ago. I arrived in cold, windy San Francisco utterly bewildered. All of the fitness and nutritional knowledge I had accumulated in my life as a Southern California suddenly and very dramatically went up in smoke. I was totally and completely turned around, lost and quite honestly feeling awful. I tried damn near EVERYTHING. The days flew by, hundreds of dollars wasted and I was left feeling just plain ol' bad. I knew I needed to see a nutritionist. I had turned to gluten, sugar, flour, bread to comfort me as I was freezing. My previously healthy eating habits had turned on me - tempted with the consistently rich, heavy San Francisco fare. No one was getting me. Nutritionists were either too focused on calorie counting, fat grams, cutting this and that or worse they weren't even listening to me! I was lucky enough to find out about Ashley - probably when I was feeling my worst as well. I knew right away she was incredible. During our first meeting she sat with me over tea at a Peet's close to my office. It was like reconnecting with a friend I hadn't seen in years. Ashley and I have been working on and off together for the past two years. The off has been because I packed my bags and moved to Portland Oregon. At first, it seemed like I had lost my greatest source of healthy motivation. Luckily, this is not so. She and I have been working together at a distance. Setting goals, reviewing my personal nutrition, and concocting an exercise program that allows me to sweat without sweating the whole process. This might seem like it would be a huge stretch to work at a distance with someone. With Ashley, it's not. Between being able to text her photos of my meals, having our weekly iChat, and literally emailing her whenever I have a question or need a cheerleader I feel that the distance is no longer an obstacle for me to work with her. Ashley and I have been working together for 18 months (!!) I first began working with her after a knee injury. I was really worried about reinjuring my knee and I despaired about ever getting it back to full strength/range of motion, etc. Ashley was masterful at pushing me enough to see continuous improvement in my knee. My knee is at 100% and I am running again. There is no doubt in my mind that I could not have achieved either of those milestones without Ashley. (She has also helped me rehab the shoulder that I dislocated earlier this year. Yes, it would really help if I stopped injuring myself!) On the lifestyle-side, Ashley has been a tremendous force. There is a Buddhist saying that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. And what a teacher! I've gone from eating 75%+ of my meals "out" to cooking the same percentage. The best thing about working with Ashley is that she meets you were you are. If you are someone who works entirely too much and eats every meal out, she starts from there. If you are a dedicated gym rat with specific goals who lives on protein bars, she'll start from that point. I just wanted to update my review about Ashley specifically as a prenatal trainer. I finally became pregnant after many rounds of IVF (which can be a killer hormone-wise - Ash kept me even-keeled!). Ashley's knowledge of the proper exercises and nutrition for every stage of my pregnancy kept me comfortable, confident and fit throughout. I had no backaches, sciatic pain or anything! I worked out until the day I went in to the hospital. I gained 35 lbs - totally appropriate for my size... and lost all the weight within 4 weeks of delivery thanks to my excellent shape going in, and recovered quickly from a long labor and C section. I'm looking forward to getting back to my old self and have no doubt it will be a snap thanks to the muscles that were prepped properly. Just had my 6 week check up and my OB was suitably impressed. Oh - did I mention I'm 45?!! and another update! I moved to Palo Alto recently but didn't want to give up working with Ashley... So we have been doing a FaceTime session twice a week. I bought a few weights, a mat, & a ball and Ashley puts me through the same paces - at home! It's thrilling to not lose any travel time and still have to keep that trainer apt. She mixes it up every time (which I could never do on my own!) and my post preg body continues to improve - I'm already below my starting weight and 5 lbs from my ideal) Most importantly, I can feel my stamina and strength improving as I pick up and play with my ever growing boy. read more

I've been seeing Ashley off and on for years. We've been "on" for the past year+ as a prepare for my wedding. She's a great trainer and nutritionist, and really cares about her clients. While her expertise is pre- and post-natal training, (and she's amazing at it, having met many of her other clients), I am neither. I have chronic neck and back problems, plus recurring foot and ankle injuries that prevent me from doing the usual exercise class stuff, and I really need pushing beyond what I do on my own to move towards my fitness goals. Ashley is great not only at focusing on what works specifically for me and keeping each session different, interesting, and challenging, but she also is always checking in with me afterwards when we try new things to make sure my back or other injuries aren't aggravated in a "bad" way. I was diagnosed with borderline gestational diabetes early on in my pregnancy. I was so upset when this happened, but the silver lining was that I ended up finding Ashley! Determined to stay off insulin, I needed to watch my diet and exercise regularly, but I was nervous to hit the gym unsupervised. After just an initial phone consult with Ashley I knew I would be in good hands. She specializes in working with pre-natal women and is so knowledgeable about getting your body ready for birth (and all that comes after!). We met 1-2 times a week and she tailored my workouts as I got closer to my due date. I even had a session a few days before! As a result of starting early and sticking with a program, I felt healthier during my pregnancy then I've felt for years. I can honestly say that working with Ashley not only helped keep my gestational diabetes under control (no insulin!), but it also helped me gain the strength and stamina for a natural birth. Ashley is THE BEST. My husband gifted sessions to me with her as a Christmas gift around the half way mark of my pregnancy. I had become scared of working out while pregnant. I was being largely immobile, and unhappy, because I was not getting much needed exercise. He was concerned for me. He did some research where he found glowing reviews for Ashley, and decided to move forward. Ashley and I met twice a week at Studio Mix before we moved away from SF. These sessions were great for staying in shape, and safe, with the baby. It was also neat having positive contact with another human being who cared about what I was going through, and getting questions answered that I wouldn't have asked anyone else. I'm usually someone who ends up getting uncomfortable with personal trainers, but Ashley is just so awesome that, that did not happen. Actually, I look forward to our sessions! We have also used a couple of her other services, and now we feel really prepared for what is ahead of us! Now that we have moved away, Ashley and I have moved to doing FaceTime sessions, and it is going really well. I am looking forward to continuing our sessions for postpartum recovery, once I am allowed to start working out again. I tell my husband frequently that this was such an amazing Christmas gift, and that I am so glad that he signed me up. I emailed Ashley last Fall after finding her on Yelp - I was looking for a trainer in the San Francisco Bay Area who specialized in prenatal and postnatal health, women's fitness, generally knew mamas. I had just found out I was pregnant for the second time and I was thrilled! I was also nervous because I wasn't happy with my weight and level of fitness. I've always been a bigger woman with fluctuating weight - I'd drop 30 pounds with Weight Watchers and then gain it all back (plus some) over a couple of years. I was heavier than I liked when I first got pregnant and last October, when we got that joyous positive pregnancy test reading, I was heavier still. I was really worried about how I would manage - I knew that my doctor would recommend putting on little to no extra weight and I wanted to make sure I stayed healthy. When I found Ashley online, I just knew we'd be a perfect fit. I poured my heart out to her - all my stats, all my fears, all my concerns - in my first email. And she responded quickly and sincerely, reassuring me that there was hope. We met for a consultation and within minutes I felt like I was in confident and capable hands. Ashley really listens and is very thoughtful about the kind of person you are and the kind of person you want to be. I should pay her extra because I feel like our sessions are workouts AND therapy rolled into one. :-) As I've described to other friends, there is no black or white with Ashley - no do NOT eat that, only do THIS. Everything is flexible and everything is mapped out to my personal lifestyle and goals. I don't have any food allergies and I cook a lot for my family - my husband and toddler son, not to mention this new baby boy on the way! She helped me see what foods I could cut, substitute and lean on. Working out with her is the best place for me to be. Ashley really listened to me - she still does! I had a few goals for myself and this pregnancy knowing I had an expert to help me out. 1. Keep good glucose levels (read: not get diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes). I didn't had GD in my first pregnancy and in general my levels are fine, but being a heavier woman I know my chances are higher so I wanted to be mindful of that. 2. Put on as little additional weight as possible. My doctor had told me that she expected me to gain some weight, a normal healthy amount, but that as long as I was never hungry and ate good foods, weight loss would be okay, too. (My OBGYN from California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco is really into exercise during pregnancy and healthy family living. One of the reasons why I love her!) 3. Create good habits for a healthy family of four. I know that life is going to be crazy with a toddler and a newborn (our boys will be almost exactly two years apart) and I wanted to get into a groove of healthy shopping, planning, cooking and eating long before I give up my sleep and free time for breastfeeding and play dough time. With Ashley's help, and my doctor's blessing, I've been able to slowly change my way of cooking and eating, improving my health and giving my unborn son a great start. I'm at 32 weeks pregnant as I type this, and have only gained 12 pounds - and that's with this baby boy measuring a full 4 weeks ahead of schedule! I feel great, I am sleeping well, and I can still carry my 45lb and 37" tall 22 month old around... though not for more than 5-10 minutes at a time. :-) Mostly, I feel successful. Ashley has worked with me to find a routine that works - I see her once a week but through text and email, she maps out my workout plan for a full week or two at a time. I have not only have a personal live and virtual trainer in Ashley, but also a confidant, a cheerleader, a therapist (see note above!) and nutritional guide. And a friend. I know that with Ashley's continued help, I'll be able to get back to my pre-baby healthy weight. I also know that with her help and our commitment to each other, that hour or so of crucial "me time" that I might be tempted to pass up in order to spend time with the boys won't waiver. And it's crucial I have it so I can be a healthy, sane mama and a positive influence on my family and friends. When I was pregnant with my first, I began to look into prenatal exercise to help me stay fit and minimize weight gain. Even though I lived in SF I found there were very few classes that were appropriate for expecting moms besides a few random yoga classes and modified barre/pilates. I'm also the kind of person who has a hard time sticking with any sort of workout routine, so I started entertaining the idea of a personal trainer to hold me accountable. After my initial meeting with Ashley I was confident that this lady knew her stuff. She knew things that regular trainers don't when it comes to how pregnancy affects a woman's body and also how modifications need to be done to work out safely during different trimesters. I interviewed one trainer who thought it was ok to workout on your back after the 1st trimester, while another pilates instructor wanted me to do this sit up type of exercise. Um hello, that makes diastasis recti worse! At the time I was 13 weeks pregnant and still suffering from pretty awful morning sickness. She helped my get started with gentle stretches and movements, and despite the nausea, I left the gym feeling much better than when I came in. I started seeing her twice a week and began to really look forward to her cheerful personality. I was hooked and loved seeing my strength progress each week! We'd focus not just on building overall muscle, but also pelvic floor strength, breathing and balance (a biggie for preggo women!). Despite watching my diet and working with Ash, my weight started to climb more than I would have liked during my 2nd trimester and my knees started to really bother me. No problem as Ash would help me modify the movements while still keeping my heart rate up and challenged. We ramped up weekly sessions to 3x a week. When I hit 30 weeks my blood pressure started to be borderline high. Turns out I was starting to exhibit preeclampsia symptoms, most notably severe swelling and hypertension. I continued to work out with Ash until I was 35 weeks and put on bedrest. We had cut out the cardio, but we still worked on building core and pelvic floor strength. She was so caring and encouraging, something I really needed during this crazy and scary time. When I wasn't able to come in anymore, she would text me to check in to see how we were doing. So thoughtful! At 37 weeks I was induced. It took 4 days to get into active labor, crazy! Then it took 3 hours of hard pushing to get the kid out. I know for a fact that if I hadn't worked with Ash to build up my strength and endurance I would have ended up with an emergency c-section. My BP stayed elevated until 3 months post partum. Once I got the all clear, I was back in the gym with Ash. We worked on my 4 finger ab separation and she even recommended me to a pelvic floor specialist. Together we got my separation down to 1 finger and I was finally able to zip up my prepregnancy jeans, yay! Last summer we bought a house in the South Bay and for a while we were doing weekly facetime sessions at my convenience. I love how accessible she is! She recently went back to school and is a pro with nutrition as well. We still keep in touch to this day with monthly check-ins. Ashley is the full package and I can't recommend her highly enough. As a new mom I wanted to get into shape after having my first baby and I stumbled Ashley at a gym close to my home. What can I tell you about her...hmmm...well first, she is amazing. At 250 pounds I started out at a big disadvantage. Ashley got me on track to eating better and getting the weight off fast. Ashley constantly checks in to make sure I'm feel okay and takes our time together seriously. I work out with her on average, four times a week and have been for two months now. How do I feel? This is really a double review because my husband (a non-Yelper...gasp!) and I are both regular, longtime clients of Ashley. A few years ago, I started pushing my now-husband to see a trainer. He did that classic thing where he kept putting it off so he could get at least a LITTLE bit in shape so as not to embarrass himself. Predictably, he never took any steps to get in better shape. And finally, I think, he was mortified enough by how out of shape he was to finally agree to see someone. On the recommendation of a friend (maisnon--see her review below), I had him meet Ashley. I wasn't at all sure it would be a fit--she's bubbly and talkative, he's introverted and often antisocial. But here we are, more than 2 years later. I can honestly say that Ashley has done more for my husband's self-confidence and self image than anyone in his life. Ever. She happily started out slow with him as they worked to improve his endurance and strength. She keeps the work-outs challenging and interesting. He wouldn't still be going to her otherwise. He comes home, proud of his accomplishments and proud of his physique. Last fall, he told Ashley that I was hoping to get pregnant and she immediately reached out and proposed that she and I work together--both to help me be in the best shape possible before I got pregnant and to help me stay that way during pregnancy. I was an avid yogi and wasn't convinced I needed to work with a personal trainer, but her passion for working with pregnant women won me over and I decided to give it a try. After just a few weeks of working with Ashley, I got pregnant. I continued to work out with her, twice a week, for the entire 40 weeks of my pregnancy. She knew how to make adjustments to protect me and my baby and I had the most wonderful, easy and happy pregnancy imaginable. My weight gain was right on target and I could see that I retained muscle tone even through my third trimester. Not only is Ashley a skilled trainer, she is supremely dedicated to her clients--more so than any other personal trainer I've known. Not one week went by during my pregnancy without her texting me to check in, see how I felt, check to make sure I wasn't sore, ask about an upcoming doctor's appointment, etc. It was so clear to me that she was 100% invested in my health and my baby's health. I know she does this with her other pregnant clients too. Over the course of the past two years, Ashley has become a close family friend, so I can't pretend this review is a wholly objective one. But I can recommend Ashley, without reservation, to anyone who is looking for a fun, upbeat, knowledgeable and caring personal trainer. And if you are pregnant or looking to get pregnant, I particularly encourage you to seek Ashley out--staying physically fit was the best thing I did for myself during my pregnancy. Plus, you feel like a badass in the gym rocking a huge belly while lifting (appropriately heavy) weights. read more

Ashley is a phenomenal trainer, doula and friend. To start with Ashley and training, what started as something I "had to do" every week, became something I look forward to. Ashley was so knowledgeable about how to help me train through all stages of my pregnancy and recovery. She seemed to intuitively know when I needed to scale down for my changing body, or when I needed a kick in the butt to move. I laugh because the activities she had me do are mimicked in actions I take in raising our little guy (she said they would be, but I didn't believe her! Now I'll be doing something like pushing a strolled up a hill and be like..."Oh! This is why Ashley had me push the sled.") Additionally, I somehow left those sessions more energized than when I came in. At 30+ weeks I think that was quite a feat! Plus, as an added "bonus," she is always available via text to help with any pregnancy concerns that came up. Can't tell you how many times I texted, "Is this normal" and she'd either say yes or call your MD! Was a lovely support. From a Doula perspective, Ashely brought such knowledge and calm to my birth experience. My husband is wonderful, but there was something special about having Ashely there to support us both! I think Tom got as much out of it as I did. Finally, it's impossible not to become close to Ashley. What started as a business transaction became something more. In short, I've been working out with Ashley for 8 months and I just love her. Ashley helped me to get my shape back and balance my diet. But moreover she helps me to understand how to deal with all the changes my body is going through without judging myself. About 2 years ago, I moved to California from Russia. It was huge stress both for my mind and body which turned into 15 extra pounds. As I'm just 5`3, 15 pounds are A LOT to gain! Taking into consideration that I've never had any issues with my weight prior to the move, this situation was really devastating for me, moreover I had no idea how to fix it. I was trying my best to get rid of those pounds, but nothing actually worked. I was dieting, spending hours on elliptical at gym, but all the pounds I managed to lose came back just after the next cocktail party or dinner out. I was almost ready to switch to a larger clothes size and throw away all my tight fitting dresses, when my boyfriend proposed to me and we decided to get married right away at San Francisco City Hall. That was a real game changer, my weight issue needed to be addressed seriously and promptly. I found Ashley on Yelp just two months before the wedding and was sold on her immediately. She made me feel very comfortable from the first minute and I knew that she would be capable of making me a better person. And she totally is! Ashley is very knowledgeable and attentive to her clients' specific needs. She's very supportive and motivating. She always creates challenging and unique work outs making sure that my goals are achieved. On my wedding day, two months after out first workout, I felt and looked just amazing! Right now I'm in the best shape I've ever been and that's a wonderful feeling. Ashley is not only an experienced professional, she is a person who is very present, nice and open. I have been working with Ashley Mathe for 3+ years and have found her to be extremely knowledgeable, patient, fun, sensitive, caring and inspiring as a trainer. As a person who has cerebral palsy and needs more attention than the average client, Ashley has gone out of her way to help me reach my goals all while working around my limitations. Ashley makes you work hard and yet makes the time spent fun and engaging, so much so that when the hour is over, you can't believe you've finished until she's kicking you out the door ;-). She is extremely knowledgeable about body and form and will work hard to ensure you are doing the exercise properly so you get the most out of every squat, pushup, plank and triceps pull you do. One of the first things Ashley focused on when we started working together was helping me improve my balance, something I felt uncertain about and often balked at. Mainly cos it was so bad. She patiently waited for me to get used to what I needed to learn and gave me the space to come round to understanding what she was trying to do for me. All the hard work became very useful for me in light of a recent surgery which due to as cast on my left foot has limited my movement to hopping around on my right foot, both backward forward sideways and what not. My recovery would not be going nearly as well as it is if it were not for the time I've spent working with her Ashley cares about your overall well-being so she'll work with you not only on your exercise regimen but your diet as well and if anything is bothering you, she'll let you talk about it and get it out of your system, whether it's related to your workout or just stress in general. She's VERY patient and calm, one of her biggest strengths. Ashley cares deeply about her clients and will do just about anything to help them attain their goals. I know this not only from the treatment she's extended to me but to others who come in to see her as well. I cannot recommend her more highly. She's just fantastic. read more

Pregnancy can be tough at times and trying to stay active can be hard when you are battling fatigue and a growing body. Ashley helped to keep me motivated and on track in terms of safe exercises during my pregnancy. I maintained much of my tone and a very healthy weight throughout my entire pregnancy. Also, no matter how tired or bad I may have felt going in to our workout sessions, I always left feeling good. About 4 months after my baby was born, I began training with Ashley again. I successfully and safely lost all of my pregnancy weight within a few months of training with her. This is not only because she is an excellent trainer but because she also helped me stay strong and fit while pregnant. I still train with Ashley 2 times a week and my son is 19 months old now! I began working with Ashley at 26 weeks pregnant when I developed serious back pain - to the point where I was having trouble even walking. I continued to work with her through week 38! She was able to eliminate my back pain through focused exercises and keep me fit and strong throughout my pregnancy. It was seriously awesome. Ashley ROCKS. She has changed my whole outlook on caring for my body--and not just with respect to my pregnancy. My husband gifted me with 10 sessions with Ashely, as I am pregnant with twins.
