The Ashor System: From what I've seen, a newbie barber starts by sweeping the floor and watches, listens and receives instructions from the veterans and eventually get his own chair...Zayas is the first guy I remember seeing sweeping to having his own chair. I've been getting my cuts from Sargoon just because he was my first cut over 4 years ago but all of these guys are exceptional at fades. Even now at $20 per cut, I wouldn't think about changing shops. Honestly I have ambivalent feelings about this place. From all the hair salons I discovered near the Evanston area, this place excels incredibly in actual mid to high fades. The price coming in at $15 is pretty worth in my opinion compared to the other surrounding local barber shops. The issue I have is that there is always a long line and you can not make an appointment prior. If you go in at say 5 or 6 pm before their closing time at 7 then good luck cause they will tell you to come back the next day. The second time I came to this place, I was told that it would be a quick wait by one of the barbers on the phone but I ended up sitting in the lobby for an hour and half. Now to me that isn't quick at all but if you have an hour plus to spare by all means this place is excellent. read more

I was referred to Ashor's by a couple of friends that live in the area. Unfortunately my experience was not great at all. When I arrived there was a barber immediately available and he took me, which I thought was great. But that's where it ends. I sat in the chair and told the barber what I wanted (a "1" all the way around, and clean up the beard). The "clean up the beard" is very important to note as you'll see in two seconds. The barber repeated back what I asked for and immediately went to work, starting with the beard - by SHAVING IT COMPLETELY OFF. He had already done the damage when I noticed what he was doing. At this point it's too late as half of my beard is now lying on the floor. Obviously I was not happy because that's not what I asked for. He then goes to work on my hair - and does half of a "1", before I asked him to take it down more, to match the sides. He didn't really do that, and now it's looking a hot mess. Seeing as my lunch was almost over and I had to get back to work (and didn't want to cause a scene because I was already very much ticked off), I let him finish. I will say he did a good lining, and the price was less than I expected. I don't know if he didn't completely understand what I wanted (even though he repeated it back) or he decided to be creative, but I was not feeling it at all. Will I be back? Doubtful. read more

What's consider to be an appointment? Show up and grab a number on hold get out and return 1 hr later? Or set a time to show up. Last couple times am been deceptionated for the waiting . I try to set appointment and said to me that "no appointment needed". Yesterday I show up and there is a list with one person written down before me and one person waiting on lobby. After a while I saw the guy to be next and been seat with Ashor. Just in that moment few other guys arrived and couple were smoking with Ashor. I wake up to ask how many guys are before me?(Since the other person on list didnt had assigned with a specific Barber I assumed I could be after him) but Ashor started counting the 2 guys smoking. Plus the guy inside and another more who was in his way and told me I you could be next until 330pm. I arrived at 12pm and was almost 1pm. I really get upset and sid I had to be at Ohare at 330pm exactly and leave. Really Piss me out. Last time they dont accept appointment and nobody but 1 person before me in the list. My respect for your great job and miracles that u do for me . You are spectacular and professional. Either you guys need a secretary or make your mind that list needs to be updated with people present on hold plus waiting in lobby and your appointments. Giving you 5 stars because the great job. And I know you guys could manage by adding a sign to request everyone to sign up before entering the lobby so everyone who arrives knows the list. read more

We just moved to the Northshore from the city and I was looking for someone for my teen son. He leaves on an international trip for 1 month so I wanted to wait until last minute so he can survive 4 weeks with no cut. Asked for a low cut wave length and I got almost a bald fade and once he finished cutting my hair down he didn't line me up in the front. Terrible experience will not be going back. Ashor is the owner. He is terrific hair cutter. It's apparent to me that it's a family business. Be prepared to wait. It's busy. There are 5 beys each manned by an individual barber. Price for a basic haircut is 15.00. You are supposed to sign your name on a list, with your cell phone #, and the number of the hairstylist you prefer. Ashor's bay is #1. So, my stylist didn't speak English and WAS NOT CERTIFIED!! The only way I could communicate to him about what I wanted was through the owner of the store. The owner said I'd look bad with what I wanted (an undercut) and told the stylist to give me something else in Arabic. They ignored me when I said I had cowlicks, so part my hair was pointing in every cardinal direction. Also the store only accepted cash and Venmo and a lot of guys were coming through to only go into the back private area of the shop, so it felt like a sketchy operation and I will never go back read more

I don't know how much my haircut was but it was cheap. I asked how much a shave was and he quoted me $10. I said sure let's do it, and the haircut. Unlike other reviewers i had a really bad experience. There is only one person who works here. Even if there are 2 people on the line you will end up waiting here 2 hours. When i called before going, first 2 times no one picked up the phone. Later when they finally answered they said they don't do appointments. Ashor had 2 friends sitting on the barber chairs and talking to him while he is giving haircut. Ashor seemed really slow and at one point he went outside to smoke with his friends while we are waiting to be given haircut. I didn't find this place professional. My advice to Ashor is keep his friends away from his business. Hire more people and do appointments. I am not going back here again. read more

tried out this barbershop, i came in with decently long hair and i wanted to maintain a bit of my long hair on the top and just have the sides cleaned up - i even showed a reference photo. everything was going good until after he took a part of my hair from the top, he did ask me if the length was good (trimmed a bit of the ends), the length was just fine until it progressively got shorter and i end up leaving his chair with 3 inches of hair on the top. and a messed up lining on the left. you're better off finding another barbershop that actually understands what you're trying to go for. read more

This crap shop should be shut down. How are you a barber but don't know what a low mid or high fade is or even a lining or blowout. This guy's has been cutting years for two years. He's always busy and you will wait 3 hours min. The guy who runs it smokes cigarettes between customers and later smells on his fingers and hands when he touches your face.
