They say it's assisted living, but there isn't any assistance at all. My mother is on oxygen, and in a wheel chair. She is also on a 24 hour Milrinone IV for her heart. This IV is keeping her alive. Because of the IV we didn't have a lot of options as to were my mother could go once she left the hospital. A lot of facilities will not take a person in my mother's condition. My mother is dying. She is not ready for hospice yet, but we know that it's not far off. My brother and I just wanted a place to help us take care of her in her final days. We wanted a place to have her taken care of watched over, and to be at peace. We are not able to do this on our own. We need assistance. We have hired nurses to take care of the IV and to see to her physical therapy. We were told that Ashton Hall would be able to help us with this. Not knowing any better we moved her into Ashton Hall. Boy were WRONG. Once there the trouble started. Not once was she offered to be taken to the dinning room to eat. She was a prisoner in her room. So we had to rely on the staff to bring her meals. She missed several meals. In one day alone three meals were missed. When I asked the staff why this happened I was told they forgot about her. How do you just forget about a person living in your facility? Do you not notice you have an extra meal on your cart? Do you not think to check to see if every one got something to eat? If not for my brother,and myself bringing her meals those days she would not have been fed at all. My brother and I had to work out a system to bring her meals. That was just part of the problem there. It took over 2 weeks to get her medications correct. Missed doses and missed prescriptions. The medications were not given a the times they were prescribed. This was all supposed to have been taken care of before she was moved in from the hospital. During the time of her move in to Aston Hall the company was being sold. So the old staff just didn't really seem to care, they weren't going to be there after the buy out. For a lack of a better term they were "just phoning it in". They all knew there were going to be replaced by the new ownership. The new ownership isn't any better. If I heard the excuse of we walked into a mess and next week things will be better I thought I would scream. I understand that with new ownership there will be a transition period, but that does not excuse the lack of care one expects. We are paying a great deal of money to have my mother taken care of. We met the new staff. they came to her room to introduce themselves. Heidi the new manager told my mother that had they been in charge when she was admitted she would have been allowed in. They told my mother if she needed to go back to the hospital she would be able to come back to Ashton Hall, and this facility is month to month. So we knew then out time was limited. I spoke to Heidi one night, and was told by her in air quotes "that this is assisted living". My reply was it would be nice if we were getting assistance. I also told her that we would be leaving Ashton Hall. But seriously who threatens a dying woman? What type of person does that? In the mean time my mother isn't getting the care the I paid for. I was even told that if she were to fall call 911. Don't call the office. One night my my mother wasn't feeling very well. She was having a hard time breathing, and felt pain in her chest. She called my brother. he called the office and asked if some one would go and check on her. They said they would be right there. That was at 6:50 pm. I went right up. I was there in 15 minutes, and went to check on my mother. I asked her if any one had been in to see her, and she told me no. It turned out to be nothing urgent. When I was leaving at 9:00 pm I saw a nurse and asked why no one went in to check on her. I was told they were never asked. I said to her, when we call and ask some one to check on it's really not a suggestion. If I didn't go up there to check on her myself no one would have. I hate to think of what could have happened if that had been a real emergency. Never in my life have I ever seen such a disregard for human care. When speaking to staff I asked if this was some one you cared about how would you feel if this was the way they were being treated. Put yourself in my place. All I was given was shrugs and eye rolls. I could go on and on about how bad things are. All I will say if you have loved ones do not take them to Ashton Hall. All they care about is your money and not your family. If you want something done you have to do it yourself. You will not get any help from the staff.

We just got my grandmother out of there. She had caregivers working with her while she was staying there and all of them can attest that they would hardly see the staff come in and out of her room while they are working. Regardless of who my grandmother decides to pay for extra help the staff there still has a responsibility to check on the people there. We've had family members come up there during the night to help her because the staff would not after she hit her call Button... she would literally wait hours on someone to show up. She is bedridden and can not move on her own. One morning that we know of for sure they completely did not bring her breakfast they forgot about her. After a caregiver confronted them they tried to sneak her food in the room. She needed help one night and there was nobody on her floor they had to get someone from memory care to come up to her floor to help her staff is nowhere to be found during the night. Who knows how many other times this has happened to her or other people the neglect here is ridiculous you literally pay to be neglected it does not make any sense. I am begging you if you really love your loved ones do not let them go here. This place must be very short staffed and the workers there are only there for a paycheck they obviously do not care about the people there.

It is a newer facility 2. It is cleaner than a lot of places in this area - it rarely has the nasty fecal smell many memory care units have 3. The food is pretty good in terms of variety and portions 4. The staff usually makes adjustments asked for by the doctor or family when they are being monitored 5. Many times I visited they had residents sitting at a communal table doing activities...bouncing balloons, coloring, playing word games, etc. This is a big plus when compared to some other places that simply push them to the nurses station and leaves them there all day. Negatives: 1. It is often understaffed - I have gone more than once and called out for assistance and no one was there monitoring the residents. One time I found workers in a back hallway on their phones. 2. Although company policy (and legal requirement) is if a resident is injured they have to immediately notify the primary responsible relative, make a digital entry in their online system, and write up the incident in the binder they keep at the nurses station desk, they do not always do that. Unfortunately there were several times this did not happen and I only found out my mom was injured when either myself or a visiting medical caregiver saw the injuries. I had to contact corporate, notify state agencies, and even had to call the police once to get them to tell me the truth about what had happened. 3. They do not always tell you the truth about your loved one's status. My mother had a cerebral hemorrhage (stroke) that left her unresponsive. They did not notice until the afternoon and then told me she was "sleepy" and as a precaution needed to go to the hospital. The truth was she had a massive stroke/cerebral hemorrhage earlier in the day (per the neurologist) that took her life 4 days later. I will never know the truth about when she had her stroke and when they found her non-responsive, but I do know she wasn't just "sleepy". The bottom line is if you place your loved one there YOU MUST: * Monitor their care by visiting at different hours of the day and different days of the week * Advocate for them and make sure the staff understands you expect their needs to be met in a timely manner * Ask questions when something doesn't seem right and verify the answers you get across multiple workers. If more people reported substandard care at facilities like Terra Bella they would be forced to improve the quality of their care. As the saying goes...you have to inspect what you expect.

The Rehab division where they work out the patients both in Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy should be more aggressive. Patients are there to get stronger so they can return home but putting pegs in a container and using an extender grabber is only effective for a warm up. PT needs to get patients up and walking throughout the day. Literally, a rotation of a few nurses or aides coming by to pick up the patient to walk the hall is a more practical exercise than a sitting bicycle for 10 minutes, etc. A patient will typically try to get out of PT and OT and if the patient is truly ill or unable at that moment, OK, go get another patient and come back to that one later. Often PT or OT would come get mom before her breakfast (and she is a severe Diabetic) which would put her in for a whole day of sickness! A little planning or earlier breakfast would be more appropriate! Food (rated a 5 out of 10) is not served in consideration of a Diabetic patient in particular. They rely on the patient to "do the right thing" and eat what they should eat according to their own health issues. Most don't bother to do that. A menu repertoire of only about 8-10 entrees come around way too often. Patient-requested favorites come pretty regularly. Medicines are doled out at a dizzying rate and many are added at the whim of attending physicians, via phone mostly. I had to ween my mom off (literally) a couple DOZEN meds once she got home! You MUST be an advocate and EVER-PRESENT voice and watchful eye when your loved one is in there or any others for that matter!

Unfortunately, I ended up walking out from my shift today on Dec 5 (3pm -11pm) due to the fact that I witnessed residents being abused and the fact that staff members during this shift was neglectful and only gave the hard work to the people that are coming from the "agency". I literally watched the other caregivers shove food down the resident's throat so aggressively to the point that you were able to hear the metal spoon hit their teeth. I also watched these people allow the resident's clothing protector to become soaked with food on them because they are trying to hurry them up when they are eating and trying to get as much as they can down their throat so it can appear that these residents "ate" or are full. Several times throughout my shift, I tried to help the residents with all their requests but was told to ignore some of them because they do it for attention and that I need to focus on residents who were not even on my chart/assignment list. I started to become frustrated when I noticed that they were giving me all the people who desperately needed their diapers changed and have been sitting in their own feces for a long period time. For example, there was this lady who I was told to clean and help her change into her PJs but to my surprise, she had feces all over her body starting from the waist down and was very difficult to change alone.... to the point where I was very upset to just see the Med-Tech and other staff members just chatting so I walked out and went home. The way that these people were talking to these residents was so rude especially the Caribbean caregiver. They locked the resident's doors and forced them to stay in the common living room area and if the resident had to use the bathroom, they told them that the bathrooms were either locked or not there because they didn't want to take them or they believe that these residents are doing it for attention. The only reason why I walked out is because it pissed me off that majority of facilities like this one are the main ones who be abusing them and I can't stand the sight of that but other than that I don't think I'll ever work at this facility ever again but I will miss some of my residents.
