Friendly service every time we've been. Some of the better Asian food in Bellingham aside from the very fresh sushi place downtown- Jun Sushi and Bento. Don't sit in the bar area- I swear there's a blind spot there cause every time we have sat there, service is really really slow to the point of annoyance. Yet every time we've sat elsewhere, it's been just fine! Also, never been a fan of the fake plants in there only because they're usually filled with a layer of dust and I'm no clean freak- just not in to look at while eating some great food. I'm a fan of the Pad Thai and Honey Glazed Chicken among many other dishes. The sushi isn't my favorite in town, but it's rarely consistently available, not complaining, just how it is. This place before used to be Pad Thai I believe. This is one of my Yummers places NOW. The last time I had been here was years ago and they served me a drink with a bug in it and didn't comp my drink :-( HOWEVER, my latest experience was very different. I went there on 11/17/2014. Well! Today I went to Asian 1 for the 3rd time and big trouble I ordered almost $50 worth of food and they told me to wait 30 minutes but when I came back they gave my food to someone else so I had to wait for another 30 minutes and they didn't even give free food but made me wait longer. I called in a to go order of Pad Thai with a heat rating of #2. When I got home and opened it, the noodles looked dark on the top. When I peeled the top layer off the noodles were fresh underneath. There was no hint of spicy heat when I tasted it so my guess is I got someone else's canceled order. I called to lodge a complaint. They said I could bring it back. We live 7 miles away so I said no. If you order to go, better open it at the store and make sure you're not getting an old canceled order! read more

Asian 1 is a pretty decent bet. My food has ranged from okay to really good. The service has been okay, though I once purposefully ordered a vegetarian dish and had a single piece of meat on my plate as an unfortunate accident. They did apologize and discount my food by 25% which was appreciated. I would like to mention though, that although this is advertised as a healthier option due to having low carb / low sugar options, they still fry their tofu in canola oil. read more

Brandi is a great server! Sushi quality is fair to good. I asked for a side of sushi rice with my sashimi. It seems almost like loose ride one would serve with Thai food / curry. The sushi chef mumbles and places items where I can barely reach them. They may be trying to be good at too many things and falling a little short on all of them. They serve a variety of Asian cuisines here. With the good service from Brandi, I'll come back to try their Thai and other options. Probably my last visit to their sushi bar. read more

I'm typing this as we currently sit here... I'm pretty disappointed... the service sucks. It's busy I get it... we sat for 10 min without service asked for a high chair and had to ask twice... we sat for the last 30 minutes after we ordered food without any appetizers without anyone filling our drinks. I probably wouldn't recommend coming here during the busy time as their cooks cannot efficiently cook for an entire restaurant without clearly falling behind. The wait staff cannot serve more than like 6 tables so I can tell it's short staffed. Let's hope the food doesn't disappoint. Went for dinner on a Tuesday night, did not know that Tuesday is the Sushi Chef's night off... Very disappointing to find that out after you've already decided on multiple items from the Sushi menu. Tempura chicken was flavorful, but the chicken breast was very tough. Thai Fried rice with chicken was good, but it tasted like the chicken was cooked separately and with no seasoning, then added to the entree. This Thai restaurant is awesome! I was trying out various spots here in Bellingham in pursuit of my favorite Thai spot, and I've found it at last. The overall atmosphere is really nice. It can get busy depending on the day you go, but nothing overwhelming. The booths are very comfortable for large parties. My go to dish is the Mongolian Beef. Has lots of flavor, and will definitely fill you up. I have yet to try any of the desserts here, but I will have to soon. If you're in the area looking for some good Thai food, I would definitely check this place out. With the inviting atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious food, you won't be disappointed! read more

This is a 3.5 star review that COULD HAVE been a 4.5 had it not been for the poor service. The food is delicious, and is USUALLY fresh. But, despite the food, they really need a better serving staff. One with less arrogance and abruptness. Please, get off your phones, servers. Portion sizes are always limited. This aggravating during dinner hours. If you dislike the bar setting like I do, this place is a no show. Their bar is right in the middle of the entire dining area. Front of the house matters!!! This place always delivers on flavour and the kitchen is consistent! They have systems in place in the back of the house that works and have stood the test of time! However the disconnect between the back of the house and the front of the house is beyond massive! Their seems to be ZERO management in the front of the house, the inmates run the asylum is the best way to put it! Zero professionalism I honestly think they have hired McDonald's and Taco Bell's rejects when it comes to front of the house staff! It's inexcusable and it has not been like this until recently. Yes their seems to be a staffing shortage in Western Washington but the disconnect is so bad that it's not just that. Attitude reflects leadership and the front of the house has absolutely zero leadership and it makes you wanting to go to 7-11 and get a hot dog instead of spending your hard earned money at this place! 3 smoke breaks for a waitress without telling us once they were going arrived at 6pm for dinner with a 2 year old and waited 90 minutes for food because the waitress was too busy smoking then puting the order in! read more

I love their menu that is full of healthy tasteful options and very deliciously prepared. Fun casual atmosphere. I had the yosabi (spelling?) noodles with vegetables and garlic sauce...only 355 calories. The vegetables are always super fresh and bright colored. Went in with a group of 5 on Christmas Eve. wasn't terribly busy but also not empty. The restaurant is clean and nicely lit, very warm inside. Our server was really nice and made sure we were taken care of. The menu has so many tasty options it was hard to pick our meal. We ended up ordering the honey chicken, green curry, egg rolls, and spicy scallop roll. All the food was great, presented beautifully but the honey chicken was the real star. The sauce is creamy and sweet and the crispy breading was delish. Also very happy with the amount of chicken you get with the meal, they don't skimp on meat. The only criticism I can offer is that rice is an extra charge on top of the entree..... Curry dishes and stirfrys should automatically come with a side of rice, that's pretty standard. Just went there today, Saturday, for dinner. It was quite busy, so we decided to order to go. It took a full hour to get the food, as they seemed to be having problems in the kitchen. The Orange Chicken I ordered was unlike any Orange chicken I've ever had. The breaded chicken pieces were plentiful, but a completely soggy mess. The sauce was thin with overly crunchy carrots & veggies, and didn't taste like a normal Orange Chicken should. My wife's Tokyo Yakisoba also had too many uncooked carrots and broccoli, and was too sweet as well. The one item I found to be good was the Tempura shrimp sushi roll. It was tasty and the only item I actually enjoyed. This is supposedly popular and well reviewed place with a couple "Best of the NW" awards, so maybe they were just having an off day. Holy wow. This place has excellent food but the service is so poor I may never go here again. There have been several times when they have screwed up our order, messed up our bills, or just have been so so I incredibly slow without communication that you wonder what is going on. Normal I let it go because I just want to eat good Thai food. But tonight we had an order to go. My neighbor went to pick it up but forgot her wallet. I called in to pay and they wouldn't take payment over the phone. So I drove out to pay for our meal. The hostess was so Incredibly bitchy to me I almost left my meal there. Stopped in to grab some take out. I was visiting the area for work, but had never been here before. I was craving sushi and it had great Yelp reviews, so I decided to give it a try. Pretty busy for a Sunday night, which is a good sign, and the ordering went quickly. I ordered one of the sushi combo specials and it was out in about 10 minutes, even though they told me 25! The hostess had said that normally a soup only comes With the meal of you are dining in, but they were giving it to me anyways. On a chilly, January evening, that was quite welcome! Wow, just wow! Never has a waiter ever told me that they forgot to give the kitchen our order, until tonight. Wow. At least you were honest... It should have been an ordinary meal, we were seated promptly and ordered cocktails (really expensive ones at that), ordered some sushi for appetizers and ordered our mains from the friendly waiter... And then we waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. We finished our drinks and I made a joke about the fact that they may have gone out to catch the shrimp for our sushi when friendly waiter showed up and admitted that he goofed up and forgot to put our order in and did we still want to eat? Well, of course I had to get snarky (because I was a waitress a long, long time ago and not once did I forget an order) so I said- "yes, that's why we came in here, because it certainly wasn't for the $12 peach schnapps and vodka." So we reordered because not only did he forget to turn in the order but he LOST IT! When I asked him- "how did that happen?" He replied that he "had other tables" I shook my head and said-"YES, BECAUSE THAT'S YOUR JOB!" (In reality I didn't yell but in my mind I was eye rolling and yelling all over the place) Ok, 15 minutes later we get our food and hubby got another drink and friendly waiter was very apologetic and discounted our meal but wow, next time I will make sure that I have a different waiter. We made the mistake of getting a to go order. We ordered our regular favs, panang curry and the honey cashew chicken, and two sides of steamed rice. When we got home to open the contents of our to go order we were rather surprised by how small the portions were not to mention that we had to order sides of rice nothing came with it. Generally I'm a big fan of this restaurant however I caution you if you're ordering to go you may be very disappointed with the quantity of food that you actually get not to mention it was cold the rice was hard like I'd been in the container for a while and the honey chicken was not something you could even chew. I've been a frequent diner here - it being a spot I like to bring co-workers for happy hour. The food is generally good and the service can vary a bit but tonight was kind of a disaster. We arrived just before 5 but sat for at least ten minutes before anyone stopped by. Ordered food and drinks, had to wait for water. The drinks were wrong and while I won't go into details, I couldn't get the taste of soy sauce out of my mouth all night. The food was okay though I ordered three stars and couldn't detect any heat. When the bill arrived, the drinks had been comped but we didn't get any happy hour discount because the order had gone in after 5. This wasn't due to us but being waited on late. It was an unsatisfying experience and it may be some time before I visit again. read more

In Bellingham to visit our daughter, who recommended this place. I was leery, as I was not feeling too well after a long travel day. The wife and I were very pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent, just the right amount of spice, veggies were softened but not mushy, still had a good crunch to them. I had the Mongolian beef, wife had sweet and sour chicken, the meat in both were cooked perfectly. So what if you had to pay an extra dollar for a bowl of rice - it was a big bowl of rice. The portions, while not huge, were more than adequate - enough to share if you so desire. The best part of the whole meal... no MSG, no gut ache or headache, just the satisfaction of having a well cooked meal. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. The hostess didn't say anything, but I don't really rate anything on service (unless it's complete s***), went there for the food, not somebody else's personality. Apparently you can only get sushi during certain times and on certain days. I made absolute sure to go in during the "stated available sushi timeframe.". We got seated and tried to order sushi. We were told they don't offer sushi between 3 and 4pm. When I looked at my watch and could clearly see it wasn't 3pm, the waiter apologized and said they stopped serving sushi early today. Wow. Back when I worked in the "north end" of the Ham I frequented Asian 1 (it was called Pad Thai back then) and always enjoyed their lunch specials. Even though they changed their name a few years ago, the menu remained the same - which is a good thing. Yes, they raised their prices a bit, but you can still get a good lunch special (which includes soup, rice, and salad) for under $10. While it's always tempting to order their pad thai, I suggest branching out and trying a few of their other yummy dishes. Yesterday we shared an order of Red Curry, which featured chicken and veggies in a yummy coconut milk broth; plus their Pad Kee Mao with its thick, chewy noodles, crunchy veggies, and yes chicken again. For an appy I also ordered their hamachi sashimi, which was yummy but $6.95 for three dinky pieces. Asian 1 also has a full bar and a good tap list (they almost always have Iron Horse Brewery's "Irish Death" on tap - one of my faves). Our server was also extremely attentive, even though he was juggling us plus a huge group that came in simultaneously. read more

First disclaimer. The food here isn't too bad. Good option if you are on the North Side of Bellingham. Thankfully this town has several other options in both the Sushi and Thai areas that far surpass the dining experience you would have here. Secondly. I'm sadden by my recent experience. It was horrible. A group of friends and myself came on a Saturday evening. It was fairly busy, not packed, our group was seated right away. But then we sat. And sat. And sat. We were all friends enjoying each other's company so we really didn't notice how much time had gone by. But it was a lot. Server appears - takes orders and we order drinks. Then we wait. And wait And wait. Drinks appear (3 fountain drinks. Not even from the bar). More waiting. Empty water glasses. More waiting. Finally food! But no silverware?! Ok now this is a joke. More waiting. Staring at our food, we wait. Finally silverware. At this point we're all a little upset. Food not bad. Not great. Here's the deal. I'm a pretty patient person. And I get it if you're slammed and your poor server is running multiple tables with sweat dripping from their brow. Not the case. I watched our server meander through the restaurant while the other tables faced the same fate as ours. I can only hope you endure better service than we had to suffer through. For us all - we will not return. My advice go somewhere else. Here's a tasty tid bit if you read this far. While we waited with bated breath for any form of substance to arrive we spilled a glass of water. There's was no one around, clearly, at this point so a friend asked the hostess for something to wipe it up with...her response "no, you'll just have to suck it up." EXCUSE ME?!?!
