I have friends that go to Asmara regularly. I have been trying different Ethiopian restaurants and hadn't been there yet, so today was the day. I had my usual ginger beer to start. For my entree, I tried something new. I had the Gored Gored, which is rare cubes of beef seasoned with awaze and butter. My "mild" was actually medium spicy, which was just right. The meat was tender and delicious. My server was friendly and efficient. Because of my timing, I had the place to myself. I will go back, but not with my veggie friends. Asmara's menu is on the meat heavy side of things. Carnivores and Omnivores will be delighted. Recommended.

We love this restaurant! My boyfriend has been coming here for years. The food here is so incredibly flavorful and delicious, and portion sizes are pretty good too. The owner and his wife are very sweet and attentive. Great vibes and atmosphere.

Came here on Wednesday around 6pm ish, party of 2, no reservations. I don't typically crave Ethiopian/Eritrean food, but I think this surpassed any other time I've ever tried it! We got a combo meat platter as well as the beef tibs, mild spicy. They also mentioned that the meat combo would have 2 spicy dishes, but it wasn't too spicy for me (I'm Asian, if that helps). Around $25 per person Pros: - DELICIOUS food - the injera was really spongey and tasty, and we got free refills of it. The meat was all very delicious - A very authentic ethiopian food experience - everything came out on one platter to share family style (which I loved), and my friend and I decided to forego utensils and eat with our hands which was very fun (but you can special request forks/ spoons if you want, as we observed others eating in the restaurant) - Very beautiful restaurant inside with cultural artwork and decor, and also Ethiopian people working there (yay support local and food must be good right?) - really good service - they kept our waters filled and let us sit for an extra half hour after we paid the bill to yap - lots of vegetarian options Cons: - parking/ driving in this area can be tricky, but there is a very handy free parking lot across the street which is very helpful! I can imagine it might be hard to park close by if it's a really busy weekend evening though

The Authentic Ethiopian/Eritrean spot on Telegraph is a gem. The space feels warm, clean, well‑lit, and intimate -- the kind of place where you immediately settle in. Service is genuinely friendly, attentive, and welcoming without ever feeling rushed. The honey wine is deliciously smooth and lightly sweet, the coffee was strong but smooth and silky. The kitfo was outstanding: perfectly warm, beautifully seasoned, and balanced with just the right amount of richness, the lamb sauteed was tender and juicy. Even the injera hit that ideal spot -- lightly sour, airy, and absolutely delicious. A fantastic experience all around.

Wow, that's the only words I can use wow! It was the best meal I had in a while. The owner and the waitress were so kind. The waitress Hiwet and Ruth did such a good job. They keep checking on me and making sure I didn't need anything. The place had a nice ambiance. The bathroom was super big lol. We left our plate empty. I literally could not put my plate down. 10/10

I came in on a Sunday night for a post concert meal and was thoroughly impressed! I walked into a packed restaurant and was seated promptly. I ordered the meat combination platter and a tea. Absolutely delicious. Some of the best Ethiopian food I've had. I will definitely be back to try other dishes on the menu. Price: $27

The food and service here were amazing! Our waiter was super friendly and gave us great recommendations! We got the chicken and fish ribs and subbed in the typical salad and potatoes for the red lentils and mustard greens. The red lentils might've been my favorite dish. It was flavorful and delicious and nicely spiced. The mustard greens were super delicious too! The fish tibs were really succulent and tender and the onion and garlic sauce was really tasty. The chicken tibs were really yummy too, we just wished it was slightly less oily but overall the flavor was incredible! Everything was served with injera and it was tangy and yummy! I just wished the injera was served a little warmer. Loved our experience and would come back to try more!

OH MY GOD! This place is better than 5 stars. I went in for lunch as I was working near by. It was nice and cool in there with a great atmosphere. I sat by the owner and she gave me some recommendations and I order the combo plate. When it arrived I started to taste everything individually. It came with goat, chicken, beef, fermented bread, salad, carrots & potatoes. Chicken was a bone in leg with a rich spicy curry. 11/10 Goat was mild is spice and spices, in my opinion fell short in flavor only in comparison to beef and chicken. 7/10 BEEF omg the beef. By far the best thing I had here. Its flavor and quality of meat was amazing. Rich in flavor yet creamy. 12/10 Carrots and potatoes helped break up the flors of the curies and had a solid veggie flavor. 8/10 Salad had a nice garlic and creamy flavor. 10/10 Lastly and in opinion least the bread. The bread is sponge like with a fermented and wasn't my favorite but just because it wasn't for me doesn't mean it won't be for you. The owner Okba was a kind lady and if the quality and flavor of the food is not enough to convince you the customer service from her is enough to come by. I give this place an 11/10 and highly recommend.

Heard amazing reviews about Asmara and I understand now! We got the veggie and meat platters which were both delicious. Beautifully decorated and our server was very sweet.

This is my favorite places when I visit the Bay Area . The ambience is great for dates. When u walk into Asmara the staff greets you and there very friendly, the wall are filled with decor walls ,tables are filled with Ethiopian pictures, rugs, and blankets, it's really beautiful. The menu has an assortment of Ethiopian and rich dishes. That are very authentic full of flavor. Trust me, you won't go wrong with Anything on the menu and the best part about it. It's fairly inexpensive although all the prices everywhere have gone up. this place is still within a modest diners budget. An Ethiopia and Eritrea is a custom that one eats with his hands so you may have to ask for and utensils you're gonna love it.

It was quiet when we came, with a little bit of construction going on but that doesn't really bother us. The restaurant setup was nice, everybody has their own space and there's a little traditional setup where you can sit and feel like you're somewhere else. So cute. I've only had ethiophian food once before this, and it wasn't great experience so I decided to give it another try. I can safely say that Asmara restaurant deliver perfectly. The spices are on point, the meat is tender, and injera has perfect fluffiness that you can use to pick up the food. I like the beef and lamb better than chicken, and the beef was perfectly spicy, I love it!

Chicken, fish, & mushroom tibs, salad, potatoes & carrots, red & yellow lentils, injera bread.

I'm a big fan of Asmara. I'd guess I've been 6-8 times, maybe more. It's the only Ethiopian/Eritrean place I've ever eaten, so I have nothing to compare it to. I live over the hills in Diablo Valley, or I'd go more often. When people tell me they're visiting SF Bay or open to trying something new, it's my first recommendation. I took a newbie for lunch about 10 days ago. I love the fish tibs, he wanted chicken. We both love vegetables, and when we noticed eggplant on the menu, we decided to split three lunches between the two of us. I ask for a special substitution .. instead of three side portions of potatoes and carrots, could we get some red & yellow lentils. The answer was yes. When the food arrived we had fish, chicken and mushrooms. We asked why mushrooms, where's our eggplant? They immediately said they made a mistake, and brought us a plate of eggplant. So two people bought three meals and were served four! And, if you're a fan of mushrooms, wow, are they great!. We had the three we ordered served on one shared platter. My friend loved all of the food, but tired of the injera, and we switched to forks... only to not fill up as fast. Great meal. I need to stop in more often. My challenge is that I want to try different things.

Went to Asmara yesterday with a buddy and ended up getting a medley of dishes. We went with the veggie sampler, fish tibs, and mushrooms. The food had solid spices and our final plate ended up being very bountiful. Their injera was also soft with a good texture. The servers regularly came by to check on us and top off our injera plate. The vibe in there is cozy. I went on a Friday evening and it was the busiest I had ever seen them. I'd recommend checking them out if you're in the area and looking for Ethiopian food!

It was pretty crowded when I arrived, so there was a wait, but I didn't mind at all. The restaurant was much more spacious than I expected, and there was a good amount of staff working. This was actually my first time trying Ethiopian food, so I let my server know that I was excited to try something new. He asked if I liked spicy food, and I immediately said YES. I ordered a samosa-style appetizer along with a meat platter that was FILLED with food. While waiting, I noticed everyone eating with their hands, and I wanted to experience the food the same way and respect the culture. Once I started eating, every bite hit me with so much flavor and spice! The appetizer was more subtle, filled with vegetables and paired with their house sauce. The meat platter, though, was the star of the show. I grabbed a piece of injera with every bite and scooped up everything on the plate. The flavors were incredible, and every time the host came by, I couldn't help but smile and tell him how delicious everything was. At one point, I eventually had to ask for a spoon. By the end of my meal, I was completely satisfied. As I was walking out, I noticed a portrait of a woman who looked familiar, and one of the workers told me it was their mother. That's when I learned this was a family-owned business, which made the experience even more special. Overall, I genuinely enjoyed every moment of my visit. Great food, welcoming people, a family-owned atmosphere, and an experience that was completely new to me. If you enjoy supporting family businesses, trying new cuisines, and being spontaneous, you MUST give this place a try!

A delicious home-cooked Ethiopian feast for two!…read more Came by on a Sunday night and it was pretty quiet. We were the only people dining in, which was honestly such a vibe. We ordered a meat and veggie combo platter for 2 + a serving of Bozena Shiro (chickpea flour simmered with beef), and an order of Selit (Sesame Seed Smoothie) to drink. It was my first time having Bozena Shiro and Selit! The Selit came out first while we were waiting for our combo platter to come out. They asked what sugar level I prefer which was nice. I went with light sugar and it was perfect! It reminded me a lot of a sesame latte, but they said there was no milk in it so I believe it was just water blended with sugar and sesame seeds. It was delicious and had a naturally savory/toasty aspect to it as well. The platter came out and wow it looked fantastic. They gave a generous amount of injera with it as well. At other locations, I always find myself ordering extra injera, but instead we had a few bites leftover! Everything was delicious, the Kik Alicha (golden split peas) are always my favorite and they definitely delivered here as well! I really need to start ordering Ethiopian food a la carte, because the Bozena Shiro was fantastic. I would've never known about it if we didn't add it to our platter! Savory, tender meat, thick consistency on the sauce/stew. The injera here is a bit too dense for my persona liking. I prefer the fluffier style injera, but the flavor was still spot on!

First off, I ordered for delivery…read more I love Ethiopian and Eritrean food, so I was excited to see this spot finally open for deliveries in my neighborhood! I think I've eaten at the majority of Ethiopian restaurants in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco, so I'm a fan. Sadly, I was NOT a fan of this spot. :( (For context, I tried to go back to the delivery app to give a review, but the window for leaving a review had closed.) I looked over the menu and I was suspicious that there was no standard Doro Wot for delivery, but, whatevs --sometimes restaurants leave off certain items on delivery apps. I got the Chicken Tibs and Beef Tibs. The beef was spiced, but the chicken tasted bland and watery. Both seemed to be missing salt. The beef tibs was tougher than I'm used to. Maybe it was an off day. The Yemisir Wot (stewed red lentils) was flavorful. The vegetarian combo was a complete miss for the price and the portions were super small. The Tikil Gomen (cabbage, carrots, potatoes) looked like one tablespoon had been scooped out and put on the injera. It came with Yemisir Wot, Yekik Alicha (yellow spiced lentils), beets(???), Gomen (collards), and green salad (though I don't remember getting the green salad in my combo). The Gomen (collards) were super bland and tasted like reheated frozen collards. My last issue is that the a-la-carte items are photographed with a small salad and injera, pretty standard (see attached image from site). Unfortunately, the a-la-carte options came singularly in a container with a side of injera. Bummer. If I hadn't included the vegetarian combo, I probably would've been even more upset. What I did like: --- - The Tikil Gomen and Yemisir Wot were well spiced and tasty. - Plenty of injera, almost too many. I think my biggest issue is that given the portion size, most items are between $16 - $24, so if you're looking to have a rounded meal (injera, vegetables, meat), you're going to have to order multiple items and that adds up fast; it will be cheaper if you just eat in or call them and order for pick-up. (I'm also kind of bummed because I was rooting for them since they are in the space where Casa Vallarta used to be.) If you plan to go, I'd suggest sticking to the vegetarian options.

Some of y'all are missing out on the bold, richly spiced, deliciously satisfying grub....and the heartburn. ;) What brought me to Café Colucchi is Doulet, a hard to find dish but more on that later. An institution in the town, Café Colucci interestingly began as a European-style café with a handful of Ethiopian dishes before eventually evolving into a traditional Ethiopian restaurant with a full bar. Walk-in only, no rezzies. Indoor and outdoor seating. Note: While they have a lovely dog-friendly patio, it's not always open. I first visited in April but was told the patio wouldn't open until May. When May rolled around, I tried calling multiple times but could never reach a live person. I also sent an email with no response, tho I eventually got a reply after messaging them on Yelp. When I returned last month, the patio was closed for a private event. Luckily, they were accommodating and said we could still sit outside as long as we finished within an hour. F O O D * Doulet: Raw beef, lamb liver, tripe ($21) - Choice of temp: Raw, rare, medium rare, etc. We chose to have the doulet the traditional way: raw....and it was BOMB! Deliciously beefy and buttery, the doulet was packed with warm spices and a nice kick of heat. The bits of tripe added a slight chew, giving it a more interesting texture than kitfo. The injera's tang perfectly cut through the richness. * Doro Wot: Chicken Stew ($21) My fav Ethiopian dish to order, the chicken stew (two tender drumsticks) was rich and spicy with a complexity from the spices and deeply caramelized onions. * Begue Wot: Lamb Stew ($22) Recommended by our server, this was our least fav dish. While flavorful, it was mainly bones with tough meat. * SIDES With each entree, choose a veggie side: --Shiro: Savory, earthy with the chickpeas broken down to a silky gravy-like consistency. --Misir Wot: The red lentil stew is boldly spiced from the niter kibbeh with a heartier texture than the shiro. * CARBS With each entree, choice of injera or rice -- Teff Injera (+$2.50 x3): Fresh and spongy with a good tang. -- Rice: While nicely cooked and fluffy, you get very little of it. The center is left open for the stews so the rice is arranged in a thin layer around the outer perimeter. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly staff. Food takes awhile to come out so we only had about 15 minutes to eat. A M B I A N C E Casual and welcoming with an open kitchen and sacks + displays of Ethiopian spices. Awesome patio with tropical plants and vibrant Afrocentric mural. Overall, I can see why Café Colucci has been an Oakland staple for yeaaars. There are only a handful of spots in the Bay Area that serve doulet, and Café Colucci is one of just two I can confirm that offer it with offal. So if you love tartare but want something with bold, explosive flavors, don't sleep on it!

The portion size is like having a feast - definitely perfect for sharing. The injerito was a great appetizer, love the silky and soft texture of the injera. I ordered the House Special Sampler which was a great option for me because I wanted to try as many dishes as I could. From the choices of meat, the beef was my favorite. I ate it with the rice from the "Lamb with Rice" dish - very perfect pairing. The rice and beef were packed with so much flavor - every bite was a sensation. If you're looking for a great Ethiopian/Eritrean cuisine, I highly suggest this place!

Everything had a good flavor balance except the Gomen. For my taste buds it could use more seasoning. The whole platter was delectable. Just one thing, a gnat showed up and landed on my other roll of injera so I did not eat it. Service 4/5 KEren, the owner is soft spoken and kind. I told her the spelling of her name was unique to the traditional spelling Karen. She greeted me as soon as I entered. At this time there were no customers. She brought me the drinks menu and the food menu accompanied with a pitcher of water. I feel a pitcher of water should be offered at every restaurant for your table. Minimizes the requests for refills. On a warm sunny day like today hydration is paramount. Keren returned moments later to take my order. Ambiance 3/5 Clean. Neat. A little bare. Four big screen televisions though for those who are into watching TV. There's a bar with a limited alcohol selection. Happy Hour is offered from 4-8pm. No days specified. There's two restrooms. One for women and one for men. The women's is missing the door have handle. Inside the one person restroom it's very clean and stocked with all the basics you need.
