I was studying abroad in Rome during the summer and was craving homemade Ethiopian food. I soon went to visit Asmara Resturant for a quick meal and it ended up becoming a home away from home for me! The owner- Yousef - was super helpful in connecting me with other habeshas in the area and helping me with a project I was working on. On top of that, the food is AMAZING and reminded me of my moms cooking. I'm so thankful for Asmara Restaurant and highly recommend visiting for lunch or dinner! I had the opportunity to dine here about a month ago with two friends on a trip through Italy and we had a great time at this restaurant! The decor is festive and fun. It even includes classic Ethiopia travel ad posters (if you are Ethiopian or a frequent Ethiopian food eater you know exactly what I mean). The best part of the food was the tibse (beef cooked with large pieces of onions and peppers). The staff is also friendly and approachable. The manager allowed me to walk to an atm since I didn't have enough Euros on me and was attentive throughout our meal. The only thing you should know is that it's cash only. read more

This place is amazing!! Best Ethiopian/Eritrean cuisine in Rome, hands down. A friend and I visited Italy for 3 weeks and were looking for some authentic food from home, since we are Ethiopian. We searched and tried two other mediocre, disappointing restaurants before finding this place. Third time was the charm! We loved the atmosphere, the very hospitable owner, Yoseph, and of course the food - so much so that we brought our other visiting family members (about 10 of us) there the very next day, and every single person was impressed! We couldn't get enough of the "key tibs" and "firfir" and the "injera" itself - it was all so tasty, fresh, and nostalgic of back home. Of course, the night before leaving Rome, Yoseph was so kind to let four of us bring our luggage into the restaurant just so we could eat there one last time before leaving. I was in Rome for three nights, on the first night I ate here. I had to return again for dinner on the last night! The ambience gives you a nice little break from the ornate Italian places and takes you to a soothing place somewhere in Africa! The Ethiopian food is authentic, fresh and flavorful. The tea that you can order after dinner is refreshing. I ordered an antipasti sampler and loved it too. Great place for vegetarians /vegans. read more

This was my second time at an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant and it was a fantastic experience! The food was delicious and authentic, with a combination dish personalized for our (myself and two friends) tastes. Eating in a communal manner with your hands is an enjoyable experience in itself but it also provides a bonding quality between the people sharing the food. This experience was heightened by the friendly and helpful owner of the restaurant, who helped us to navigate the different dishes on the menu as we ordered. Additionally the atmosphere in Asmara is very cozy, a fun mixture of old Rome and African decor. We highly recommend this restaurant for an authentic Ethiopian dinning experience! read more
