Tonight we had the chicken Caesar salad and ham/mushroom pizza. The Caesar was disappointing to say the least. It's a bowl of iceberg lettuce, some olives, pounded dry chicken and a mayo type dressing. The pizza dough is flat. Not the best pizza experience. The service was good and staff is friendly. Only one of our party of 3 was hungry so we planned to order drinks and one meal but were told we couldn't dine there unless we ordered all entrees for each person. I told them the food would wasted since we were that hungry to eat all 3. Instead they should charge a seat fee for the price of an entree per hour or something instead of encouraging to waste food. Hands down, the BEST MEAL I had in Rome. EVER. I have been to Rome three times now and I will NEVER forget the lunch I had at this restaurant near the Vatican. After a long morning braving the heat inside the crowded Vatican museum and St Peter's Basilica, my family and I headed past all the pushy hosts claiming they served the best lunch to this quiet corner on Borgo Pio. We ordered the special of bruschetta and pasta. I had the spaghetti carbonara and my boyfriend had the spaghetti amatriciana. BENISSIMO! With a liter of house wine, we were treated to a delightful meal. I felt like I could taste every fresh herb, every nuance of the vegetables, oils, and cheeses. Our waiters were attentive and warm. The server didn't speak Italian or English, only Portuguese. Our three appetizers never came. When the server didn't understand no parsley in Italian or English my wife looked it up in Portuguese to tell him. Then her dish came with parsley. It's disappointing and the host didn't care either. This was the BEST restaurant we experienced in Rome. We had plans to tour the Vatican but wanted to grab a nice lunch before. We walked around and this establishment caught our eye. Their menu looked great and they had so many people dining, even groups of roman priests! We sat outside and it was a gorgeous beautiful day. It's located in a cute area with lots of wonderful shops and people watching available. We ordered and shared the following: Spaghetti ai Frutti di Mare (with clams, mussels, shrimps) - The pasta was perfectly al dente. The seafood was fresh and delicious. Generous portion. Pizza Capricciosa (tomato, mozzarella, ham, mushrooms, egg) - Nice and thin. Great combination of flavors. EVERYTHING was amazing! Service was good. They were very busy for lunch so it did take some time to get our check after we asked for it. We would have come back again the next day if we had more time in Rome. Feb 2012: I had taken the bus over to the Vatican and did the combo elevator/stairs to the top of St. Peters dome (320 steps versus about 550 steps!). What great views! After a visit inside the Basilica, I walked to Borgo Pio, a pedestrian street filled with restaurants. Several had a person standing outside trying to lure hungry diners inside. I kept walking until I reached Tre Pupazzi (#183), a restaurant I had been to back in 2007 with friends Deb and Robert. I ordered the tomato bruschetta (two larges slices of toasted bread topped with fresh tomatoes and olive oil) and then fettuccini con tartufo for my entree. I wish I had a gadget to record the incredible smell of the truffle sauce - it's one of the best smells in the world. The pasta filled me up and was so delicious! With a liter of house white wine and water, my bill came to 16€. This is a place popular with the Vatican clergy. Three were sitting behind me enjoying their lunch too. Courteous service, a comforting interior, this is a place that I recommend for anyone that wants a good lunch (or dinner) after a day of sightseeing at Vatican City. read more

If you find yourself near the Vatican at lunch and need a place to get a traditional Italian or Portuguese (I know - we're in Rome) meal - go to Tre Pupazzi. If you need a true Roman endorsement - the place is almost always filled with priests . . . now, that should be strong evidence of its value, as the priests working in and around the Vatican know the food scene. We had a full Roman meal with 5+ plates and a table full of glasses. The food was good (especially the Risotto), but the atmosphere was the best! We enjoyed the panna cotta the most! read more

I came here with two local friends for dinner. On Fridays and Saturdays they have a "Portoghese" menu, and having ate pasta and pizza almost every day for the past month, I decided to give this menu a try. It is wonderful! You must give her a try, especially the dishes that I had because they were all delectable. Ameijoa a Bolhao Pato is the perfect appetizer to share with two or three if you like garlic-wine oil clams and bruschetta. The flavors are very savory and enticing--a perfect beginning to the main dish. I was in the mood for some hearty meat, so I went with the Bifinhos con Natas e Cogumelo, a generous portioned plate of veal in a special Portuguese mushroom sauce, served with rice and house-made fried potato chips, made with fresh and thick portions of local potatoes. The veal was cooked about medium-well, but the sauce kept the dish alive, even after seemingly countless slices of veal. One of my friends went with the Lombo de porco recheado, a pork with prune garnish, and this also was another fantastic plate. The prunes are caramelized and cooked with the meat, so you get this zest of sweet tartiness with the tender slices of pork. This was my first visit to Italy. My friends and I ended up here because the restaurant we wanted to go to was closed. We were pretty satisfied with our main courses. The pasta was al dente, and the flavors of each of the different pastas we ordered were great. I have had good quality pasta before and this was not it. Not to say that we didn't enjoy our pasta. We really did, but we have had better. This is not a reason to avoid this restaurant. If you wish you have a simple, relaxing, cheap dinner...then this is a great place to try. If you prefer a more upscale place, there are other options nearby. Lastly, none of us complained about the house wine. read more

When ready through previous post, I am confused! I found the service slow and after waiting 30 minutes for pasta, you would expect it to be handmade. The gnocchi with asparagus and speck was bland and required a lot of parmesan cheese to have any taste. The spaghetti Bolognese looked and tasted like it came out of a tin. The best part of the meal was the bread! The place opposite (same side of the road. Sorry can't remover the name.) is mind blowing. Don't waste precious stomach space here! read more

One thing that takes getting used to in Roma is the opening time. We walked in at exactly 7:30 and were the only people in the restaurant. Unfortunately they messed up on of our orders. The bruschetta appetizer was fantastic! Best bruschetta ever, hands down. The frutta de mare was excellent (what we ordered) and the other dish was a pasta with vegetables (good not what we ordered). Very busy restaurant, so busy they forgot the one dish I was looking forward to...the braised ox tail. We were told twice it would be coming in 2 minutes, 30 minutes apart. We stopped by here yesterday and found the food fresh and reasonably priced. The grilled chicken and pasta vongole are recommendable.

Good food and wine Our group (4 couples) went there for lunch after seeing the Pope on Wednesday. The appetizers were hearty and flavorful, the pasta was very good, the house wine was excellent and those that had dessert said it was worth it. Let me start by saying two things- one: I've spent a good amount of time in Portugal and this food is not traditional Portuguese and second: I'm giving a one star rating cuz i have to. I came here with my wife and son to have a nice dinner. Little did we know, the service SUCKED, the restaurant wasn't busy, 4-5 tables occupied but our waiter took the luxury to ignore us from the start. We had to keep asking other waiters to find ours. The guy barely showed up, took our order of Mixed Bruschetta, Roasted Cod and Fettucine Bolognaise. People who showed up after us got their appetizer and entrees a few minutes after arriving, but we waited 40 minutes and still no sign of our food or our waiter. We had to talk to another waiter who then went and got us our bruschetta (apparently that order was never put in by our waiter). We got the entrees 15 minutes after the bruschetta only to find the cod over cooked and rubbery, and the pasta bolognaise dry. When we asked for the waiter and informed him of our displeasure he said this is how it is supposed to be and you will have to pay for it. We asked for the manager and his attitude was even worse than our waiters'. Instead of being apologetic and offering up a suggestion/replacement, he kept driving the point that this is how cod is prepared and that we are not aware of how Portuguese baked cod should be. He also kept mentioning that we will have to pay for it, even though we just ate one bite of it and rejected it immediately. He kept saying that they made 15 other cods that day. Maybe if we got it in the few minutes it takes to prepare it instead of the hour we waited we might have gotten a non-overcooked piece. I would give this place a 0 out of 5 on food and a negative score on service if I could. Maybe he was racist and didn't like that we are of Indian origin, maybe he was annoyed we had a baby in a stroller. Regardless, between the lack of edible food and the beyond pathetic service, I would not be surprised if this place closes its doors soon. There are far better restaurants on the same street.. I went to I Tre Pupazzi for my last meal in Rome, and it was absolutely delicious. I started with proscuitto and mozzarella, and it was the freshest and best mozzarella I've ever had. I had a cotto pizza, which was also really, really good. I ended with tiramisu, which was fantastic. Great way to end my trip! read more
