Don't sign anything or agree to pay money until you take your care plan proposal home and do some homework with broader customer reviews, personal insurance coverage, and second opinion for the big stuff. There's a lot of unnecessary add ons and inflated prices - plus I suspect the clinicians are paid through incentives to extract teeth and land extra inflated price treatments (especially SRP deep cleanings). Being aware of this business model helps you make an informed decision. When you do decide what you need, cross out those expensive line items you don't want, or need, and pay only for what is necessary. Do this before you pay $ in advance. My experience with office staff and hygiienist was good. They were all very helpful and responsive to my requests. I feel I recieved value for the money spent. My mouth is healthier as a result! The dentist gave me what I needed to resolve my emergency. All was great- except for the time after my initial exam during proposed care-plan (14k!) - I was shook and felt like my mouth was a money cow. Minus one star for the stress. Thursday, June 18, I pulled up at the local Aspen Dental office. I wanted to find a new dentist. The sign on the door said to call ###-###-#### but do not enter the office. I called and spoke to a nice lady but she wasn't at that local Aspen Dental office. She was working at a call center for Aspen Dental and made an appointment for me on the following Tuesday. She did not know if Aspen Dental accepted my dental insurance but assured someone would call me in a day or two and let me know. Four days later I received a call from the local Aspen Dental office. The female caller told me she needed to go through a Covid19 checklist with me. I explained that my children were visiting from out of state (Father's Day) and I could not talk at that time. She became very aggressive and said something about the "doctor needs to have this information" and she wanted to do it now. Again I told her I could not talk at that time. She seemed ticked off and ordered me to call her back before 3:30 pm if I wanted to keep my appointment. And yes, it did sound like an ORDER. I said I would call her later. About an hour later I called her back. As I began to explain who and why I was calling, she immediately cut me off and said; "I'm with a patient and can't talk. Give me your number and I'll call you back". I gave her my number. About 35 or 45 minutes later she called. She launched into her Covid screening questions. Once that was finished I asked about my insurance. She told me they did accept my insurance but no insurance company pays all fees and was vague on payments and things I really needed to know. I had just gotten off the phone with my insurance company and was told there was no co-pay for teeth-cleaning etc. When I told the lady from Aspen Dental I had just spoken to my insurance company she began arguing with me telling me it all depended on the dental hygienist. Once I was evaluated by the hygienist she would determine what treatments I needed and whether or not I needed to make any kind of payment. I questioned this but the lady was argumentative. I didn't want to go there and ruin her day or mine, so I said goodby. She sure was acting like Nurse Ratched in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" Here is the problem I find with Aspen Dental: This person who's name I failed to get or remember is not a good face/voice for Aspen Dental. She was super aggressive and much like the stereotypical pushy used car salesman. I got the feeling she was setting me up for charges I didn't really need once I came in and had my checkup. MY OPINION: ASPEN DENTAL SEEMS TO BE LIKE THE PUPPY MILL OF DENTISTRY. I COULD BE WRONG. THE DENTIST AND OTHERS COULD BE GREAT PEOPLE AND PROVIDE A GREAT SERVICE...BUT THIS WOMAN WAS NOT SOMEONE I EVER WANT TO SPEAK WITH AGAIN SO I WILL NOT GO TO ASPEN DENTAL OR RECOMMEND ASPEN DENTAL. ZERO STARS! SHAME ON YOU DR JEFFERY JAMES LIVINGSTONE DDS AT ASPEN DENTAL IN ALBANY!!! I came into my consult appointment thinking I was just going to get X-rays and schedule a cleaning. I had logged in online in January and filled out all my new patient paper work and setup an account. Upon arrival, the front desk receptionist had me come in early to fill out forms, and when I started them, I realized these were the same as I had already filled out. I stopped and told her and she said she had no record of them. I said I would bring up my account and she went and talked to her manager and miraculously found the completed paperwork. The X-Ray tech was very kind, personable and made for easy conversation. Another gal came and did teeth measurements and left. Then in comes Dr Jeffery J Livingstone DDS. Very personable but a real snake. I ended up leaving frightened, horrified, and traumatized being told my teeth were so bad, that if I didn't do something soon, I would have abscesses and I either needed $21,000 dollars of repair work or have all my upper teeth extracted, two bottom teeth extracted, and pay $8000 for an upper denture!!! WHAT???? I cried thru half a box of Kleenex while in the exam room, to then be corralled to their office manager that asked if I could pay or need financing. I said I was not able to afford that and she offered to see if I would be approved for credit. I was, and I told her that I did not want to sign anything without talking it over with my husband (mind you I am still crying in front of her). Preying when people are crying and vulnerable - what a racquet! I now see on my credit report they ran my credit, opened up a credit card (without my permission) & without me agreeing to the work. I just wanted my teeth cleaned for crying out loud! What a scam! I was being pressured to sign up for financing while upset, scared, and traumatized and did not sign. I left horrified and sat in my car, sobbing, called my mom (who has all her teeth at 90 years of age) who said "Laura, get a 2nd and 3rd opinion". I did so immediately, and signed a release to send my X-rays to my former dentist in Salem who has known me for 15 years. He saw me first thing the next day and reassured me that I did not need to have my teeth pulled or need dentures. He told me had he known to steer clear of Aspen Dental. Apparently they are well known for their in-house sell tactics and are known for doing extractions and dentures and build them in house - which is their money maker. Greedy and shameful you know whats. I have now seen many complaints and BBB claims. Shame on you Aspen Dental for preying on this elderly senior citizen (and how many other people you have and continue to deceive). I never have been treated so horribly. What a violation! Predatory and traumatizing! How could you do this to people? Sounds like Wells Fargo Bank!!! My husband went in 1/4 for a routine cleaning and xrays (not sure if he had them last time) I am sitting at home when I get this notification that the charges are $3200.00!! He has benn going to them for several years but after my one and only visit years ago I said no thnks.They pulled the "deep cleaning" scam on me.I have been going to a dentist every six months for years and never heard this.Of course we were talking around $3000.00. I said no thanks and wanted to talk with the hygenist.She was very irrittied that I did not take her word for what was needed.I actually do not remember seeing a dentist but I must have been a quick check if I did. The "up-sell" is not something I want in a healthcare setting. I should never be forced to wonder about your motivations as a healthcare professional-- are you recommending this because it is necessary/recommended/healthy, or because you get a commission/bonus/otherwise increase in profits. Unfortunately, most of the recommendations I got here seemed to be the latter, whether it was using the Pick-Up Artist tactic of Negging to try to sell me teeth whitening ("I guess if *you're* happy, it's fine...") or constantly trying to up-sell the Bluetooth-connected electric toothbrush after saying no multiple times, or even performing Oral Cancer screenings with no discussion of cost/insurance coverage [which then left me with a bit of a surprise bill...]. I was also unhappy with my husband's oral surgery experience here, as there was no after-care discussion (with me or him) at all, and he was prescribed an antibiotic that he has a known allergy to (thanks for the catch, Walgreens Pharmacy!). I was also just generally unhappy with explanations of billing here. We've since switched to a non-for-profit dental group able to give us clearer explanations and expectations for bills, and whose motives I don't find myself second-guessing. read more

Today was my first visit to Aspen Dental of Albany. I switched dental insurances and had been procrastinating establishing with a new team since dental work causes me a measure of anxiety. Perhaps you feel similarly if you're reading reviews. First, a note about scheduling: I called expecting to make an appointment two weeks out, as with most medical offices, but was pleasantly surprised when they offered me a same-day appointment. I was further impressed when after my new patient exam, they got me in immediately for a cleaning. While I didn't expect to spend 3 hours at the dentist, I was happy to have everything cared for in one visit. Now about care: I found today's experience very reassuring. I was in capable hands, hands that actually cared. They were smiling and complimenting one another - and even me!("You have very long roots" is now my new brag at parties. ) Dr. Livingston and Stephanie, the hygienist, were thorough, honest, and genuinely friendly, as was the assistant who did all of my X-Rays. (I'm sorry I didn't catch her name, but she was great!) I was very appreciative of their willingness to accommodate my sensitivity, never acting like my discomfort was their inconvenience. The office manager was extremely helpful and patient as she explained the cost of procedures, insurance, and options. No one made me feel pressured or bullied. Bottom line, if you spend an hour + drooling all over yourself and still walk out feeling like it was a fairly pleasant experience, you've found a great office you can trust. read more

Wish I had read this reviews before booking an appointment with this dental group! Everything seemed ok at first. Got in fairly quickly. After the first appointment it was all downhill. They changed all five up coming appointments. One was even changed twice. After the work was completed I tried to get an appointment for severe pain. Best I could get was 3 weeks away. So instead I opted to go to their Kaiser office in a week. In the meantime I'm in pain and can hardly eat/chew! Though every visit the dentist kept saying if I had any issues just call and they'd fit me in. I had no dental insurance so had to pay upfront (via care credit) $4000.00! Not happy with their service! Many people here refer to them as a car lot! Seems to fit my experience. Their nice to you to begin with but once they have your money.....Good luck!! read more

The worst dental experience I've ever had. I was quoted a specific price for a root canal. I paid the money up front. They accidentally dropped a file down my nerve and had to stop. I came in two other times to fix the problem. On the third visit they said I had to pay additional funds for the filling. I have since seen another dentist and they have said that not only did they drop a file down in the nerve, but cement from the filling also was lost in the nerve and said there could be damages and infections for years. This was the absolute worst dental experience. It was straight out of a horror story. Aspen dental is the walmart of dental clinics. Pay the extra money and go somewhere else that isn't based on shady business practices. I'm filing a formal complaint with the Dental Association as well as contacting legal teams to find out if there are other ways to ensure this doesn't happen to anyone else. I have never been to a chain dental office before and have used the same dentist for a large part of my life. Due to changing insurance, I had to come to this office. I have never had a dental experience as terrible as this one. It felt like I was in the middle of a timeshare sales talk the whole entire time. I was talked to about so many services/products that I either did not need or did not care about because of an underlying issue that resulted in my visit which caused me a lot of pain. I had to keep redirecting their attention to why I was there while they kept talking their sales pitch. I decided to get a second opinion from my regular dentist who disagreed with most of what they tried to sell me and was concerned largely about how my oral hygiene could have changed so much in the year since I had seen him when he read the notes as to why I was there. Aspen did a terrible job of explaining to me about what they wanted to do and why, my old dentist explained what it was that they were wanting to do and why that was wrong. The whole appointment felt off and made me uncomfortable. I didn't even feel like I was a patient that was genuinely cared for at this office, just another person they could make money off of. Additionally, each time I have tried to call and talk about my files, the office staff have been incredibly rude and unhelpful. They called me and said I needed to call them back immediately, I was put on hold for 10 minutes before I hung up as I could hear someone answering the phone and putting me on hold again twice. Update: it's a year later, the pain from my old crown has been intense, Got to the dentist and had to have a root canal and a brand new crown, $3000.00!!! But man it's done right. I can feel the difference in my bite right away and their techniques were so different from Aspen. Please AVOID ASPEN DENTAL. Get it done right the first time some where else. Terrible experience. I was losing my insurance so was very hesitant to start the process of fixing a cracked tooth. They encourage me to go forward anyway saying we would have time. They took an impression of the tooth to get a crown. The temporary crumbled in less than 24 hours leaving my ground down tooth exposed. It was obviously painful. They were too busy to get me in within for SEVERAL days. When I did go in for the crown it didn't fit my tooth at all! But instead of taking responsibility the dentist made excuses and said it was "common". After literally 45minutes of grinding down the crown to fit, which was still very uncomfortable he told me it is common to be uncomfortable until I get used to it. It was written all over his face that something had gone wrong. Aside from even that I heard employees gossiping about people at EVERY VISIT! Now months lat my crown had never become comfortable, never felt secure and has just completely FALLEN OFF while swishing mouth wash. PLEASE DO NOT GOVE YOUR BUSINESS TO THIS PLACE. Aspen Dental Albany should be your very last resort for dental services. Their business model is based on commissions for providers (dentists and hygenists) selling you services and products. I recommend that you do not immediately (while in the office) schedule or agree to any services on the treatment plan they give you. Take it home and review it very carefully because there are probably numerous products and services you don't need. Aspen Dental has made me a more assertive and informed dental consumer. Going to the dentist to a pain, but if you enjoy aggravation on top of your pain, this is the place for you. My husband went to the Albany office once. The exam was the lowest quality he had ever experienced to start. But we are new to the state and needed a dentist covered by his dental insurance. We received a bill of $10 for a co-pay. But when we contacted the insurance company we were assured no co-pay was due. We informed the office and they agreed. They continued to bill us every month and my husband called them several times. They were supposed to fix the problem. Today we received a collection notice, the first in our lives and we are in our sixties. I have decided to pay the dang $10 as my husband is now extremely ill and we have more important things to do than argue with incompetence. Avoid this business. Well my first visit was for a tooth cleaning. When I arrived I was told I couldn't get my teeth cleaned because I needed a new patient consult first. This was a first for me as every dentist I had ever gone to in the past, could give me a cleaning with a consult at the same time. This visit.. I had the xray, then they used some special magnify glasses and I was told I have 8 or so cavities that wouldn't have been found without special glasses because they're so small. I left the office in tears. That was just hundreds of dollars I didn't have. My second visit, I had my teeth cleaned, I was reminded of my hundreds of dollars of cavities needed but refused follow up because I was pregnant and like they said, are super small.. dental work stresses me out and I didn't need to stress out my unborn child. My last visit which was after my baby was born and my 2nd teeth cleaning with them... my dental insurance changed to my new husbands. I hadn't received an insurance card yet but I had a post card from the insurance company saying I was covered as well as a number to reach them. I handed it to the receptionist. I was told it wasnt good enough and was told I needed to pay them in full for the cleaning. I had a babysitter for my 1 month old daughter and couldn't come back at another time so I paid the $150. I was reassured that I would get the money back after I call them with more dental insurance information. I waited and waited for an insurance ID card from my dental insurance and watched the insurance deducting premiums from my checking account. I finally called them because I want my $150 back from Aspen Dental and I was told they dont give ID cards. I was told by my dental insurance that all Aspen Dental had to do was call the number on the post card I handed them at the time of the visit. WhAt???!!! I was very upset by this. I became more upset when I called the office, gave them the information off the post card and was told I probably wont get my money back. X-ray Tech - very sweet lady, fast, efficient - does a great job. Receptionist - friendly, patient, easy to deal with. Justin, Office Manager - Very professional Dental Assistant - Needs some work with customer care The difficult one of the group is the dental assistant...where to begin? She "helps out" at the front counter when things get busy, or so I've been told. I've overheard her speak rudely to patients on the three occasions I've been in that office. She ill-tempered, impatient, rude, and always seems put out to answer questions. On three separate dates, the dental assistant at Aspen Dental booked me for appointments only to find out SHE made mistakes. The first time was on a Tuesday - drove all the way up from Corvallis (round trip 40 miles) only to find out that the last Tuesday of each month they do monthly billing and they scheduled me in error because they were closing early. The next appointment went somewhat smoothly for x-rays. The follow up appointment was scheduled for May 19th @ 5:30pm. I drove all way up to Albany - again - only to hear the dental assistant tell me I must be mistaken because the appointment is really scheduled for May 26th, the following Tuesday (which once again, would be the last Tuesday of the month - same screw up she made last time). I said, "Hey! I sat here on the phone in front of my computer, repeated this appointment back to you over the phone - twice - and typed it into my Outlook calendar. There's no mistake on my part!! And since I'm already here, can't you at least take the impressions?" Hand to god, this is what she said, "Well...I'm really, really swamped right now." When I walked into the office at 5:15pm, she was sitting on her butt yakking with the office staff DOING NOTHING! As I look around, I notice there's only one other patient in the lobby - a little old lady. So at this point, this dental assistant flat out lies to me, YET AGAIN and tried to reschedule me on another date they would have been closed anyway (remember, May 26th would have been the last Tuesday of the month). In the meantime, I've found a competent doctor in Corvallis that comes highly recommended. I called yesterday to "cancel" the appointment that was bumped to May 26, and what do you know? The receptionist tells me they have NO RECORD OF ANY APPOINTMENT for me at 5:15pm on May 26. I said, "You've got to be sh!tting me, SERIOUSLY?!" I reminded the receptionist about the incident from just the week before and she says, sheepishly, "Oh I remember that now - so sorry about that. Would you like to speak with the office manager?" I said, "Well, do you really think it's going to do any good? If so, have him call me because I'm going to chew on his ear for a while!" So an update - the office Manager, Justin, returned my call and we had a very nice conversation; he was very professional and kind. He apologized profusely for all the mixups and explained that that branch is having difficulty with the dentist who was working there at the time. Apparently, he's a "no show" many days of the week and the office staff have to punt to cover for him. That being said, they now have a responsible dentist who is working for them and they are very pleased. I stated that I was sorry he and the staff were taking the brunt of hostility from so many patients, but that if the dental assistant had to fabricate a cover story to save face for a dead beat doctor, to come up with something more believable than "I'm swamped" as that response seems so disingenuous and only aggravates customers. So I totatally get they have to punt, but they have to do it in a more professional manner. He assured me that he had spoken with the dental assistant about her demeanor. Let's hope the new doctor doesn't put the staff in the middle of their problems. read more

Well here I am one year down the road and I'm still fighting with Aspen dental. Not only the horrible Albany office where this dental nightmare started, I've also had communication with the main office in New Jersey. Promises, promises, promises and a lot of passing the buck. This department will help you, that department will call you. It never happens. And if you try to contact them, nobody knows what is going on, and again they pass the buck. Aspen dental in Albany still owes me 3500.00 for work I paid for but they refused to do. READ BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING. They are pulling a scam by making you sign a patient financial statement. They will tell you it's for your " treatment " , but if you sign, you are obligated to pay more money. And they will send you to a collection agency. Love the staff at this dental office! They are so friendly that you never feel like a stranger. They have the MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE DENTIST. She is gentle, sweet, but that is very talented that will be able to perform any dentist procedure that is necessary with knowledge, and determination to make sure that you are taken care of to the best of her ability. Her ability is awesome!! This office keeps working on you until your mouth, bite and teeth are the best that they can possibly make them even for a remake on a denture! I will recommend this office with this dentist to anyone that I see. My praise does not stop with the dentist for the dental techs and their lab man are among the very best. My first phone call was the ONLY positive experience I had with this office. One week after I scheduled my appointment I received a call to cancel my appointment for the following evening due to 'emergency' surgery that trumps a new patient appointment. When the appointment was offered to be rescheduled I shared that when I made the initial appointment I was approved for a follow up cleaning to be done before the last day of the month- since my insurance would terminate. I was told that someone in the call center in a different state must have made a promise they weren't supposed to make and that I would only be given a new patient appointment, not a cleaning before the end of the month. Three times I tried to share that I was approved for and promised a new patient appointment and a cleaning before the last day of the month- especially since I will have no insurance or means to pay for a cleaning- three times I was told that wouldn't happen, even when I asked if I would be better off trying to be seen elsewhere. Customer service was lousy. I lost an entire week when I could have been seen by a different office. Their call center was blamed- not good team work or patient care. There was no effort made to try to put the patient first- knowing they would be losing a new patient. The fact that I have lost an entire week and may not be able to get in elsewhere before my insurance lapses- total disregard. I wouldn't even give this company 1 star if there was a lower rating. Aspen Dental in Albany, OR was suggested to me as they take Careington. I must say the people were very nice, but the service was not! I had finished up with Chemotherapy and my mouth was hurting. First off I was told I needed a deep cleaning as I have gum disease. Luckily, they had a 2 hour appointment available the next day. They charged me 994.20 and the appointment took less than and hour. While I was there I realized that I had been charged $135 for an electric toothbrush that I didn't need and didn't get. I left it on account as I thought I would have more work done there. The total estimate was for $12,845.00. It included replacement of a cracked bridge, I think 2 crown replacement, several cavity fillings and various other things. As I am on a limited budget, I decided to get a second opinion. I was told it would take 2 weeks for them to transfer my xrays. 2 weeks later Healthy Smiles Family Dental in Salem OR had not received anything. When Aspen was called we were told they hadn't received any release from me. So, I had to change my appointment. Two weeks later I go in for my appointment and my bite wing xrays had not been sent. I had them taken again. (And, by the way I called Aspen to see if they were digitalized and they were.) There was no reason they could not have sent them. My bill at the new dentist office was less than $900 for 1 new crown and a couple of cavities. I was much impressed with this new dentist and decided to have my work done there. Over 2 weeks ago I called to have the $135 refunded to me from the toothbrush I did not want or receive. This last monday I called as I had not received my refund (that was when the 2 weeks were up) I was told it would take about 2 weeks. I told the receptionist that I had already waited 2 weeks. She said she would look into it. I told her I would call her back on Wednesday to see if it had been refunded. Still didn't receive it. Called back on Wednesday told her I had not received it. Was told that it was done on Tuesday. Checked my Visa account today (Friday) still no refund. I have never had a refund take over 3 days to show up on my account. I am very upset. I am considering going to the Board of Dentistry. I fell l was charged way to much for the Teeth cleaning considering they had planned on 2 hours and it took less than 1 hour, and the estimate I got seemed to have a lot of work on it that I didn't need done. Please get a second opinion if you don't have dental insurance and are given a huge estimate. Update: Just showed up on my credit card. read more

I was leery about going to Aspen but it is one of the offices that my medicare advantage plan covers. The X-ray tech was overly talkative, laughing and talking non-stop. The room was not the wholesome, clean space I am used to in private practices I have gone to. I then had a dental assistant check my gums for pockets for disease. I was amazed that most of the pockets were deemed as 4s. The dentist came in for about 8 minutes and checked briefly and said I might need some old fillings replaced. I told him as I had told the assistant that I did not want anything done that was not paid for by my insurance. I was given a second appointment for the cleaning. My previous experience has been that the cleaning is done along with the check-up but not here. When I made the 2nd appointment the receptionist asked me how I would like to pay for the $200.00 + payment I would owe. I told her I did not want anything done that my insurance company would not pay for. She told me that the dentist had ordered two fillings and a treatment for gum disease. Of course, I balked and said I wanted to speak with someone else. I was told I would have to make another appointment. Subsequently I made an appointment with a different dentist office and they did what I asked. I do not have gum disease nor do my fillings need to be replaced. My husband had a so called free consultation for dentures at the Albany, Or office. They immediately take you in to have ex-rays and then you see the dentist. He looks in your mouth and at your existing dentures. Then you meet with the finance person. Well, first of all, we have high dental insurance. They do not consult with your insurance company. Their charges for your portion are based on what ASPEN has listed on the computer. This was approximately 1300 higher than allowed. We would have to request a refund. Then we get two separate statements from our insurance company. Different claim numbers, but the exact same codes and descriptions and charges. Our insurance company paid both claims for the exact same amount. This is double billing. Then ASPEN sends us a bill for the exact same amount stating that it was our copay. Well, it would have been if they had not double billed our insurance company and actually was paid the second time - which was our copay. We called. They said they didn't double bill. We have the statements and they show two separate checks issued with different check numbers. Stay away from this place. The finance person is incompetent and Aspen will overcharge. Whatever happened to honesty and integrity? By the way, we went with Waverly Dental. Paying over 1300 less for the same dentures and they are highly rated and recommended. read more
