It's a little bit like dinner theater, but with dental anxiety. You will be pressured into unnecessary services, while items are rapidly added to and removed from your bill like a shell game. Privacy is optional, as treatment plans and financial details are discussed openly, out loud, in front of everyone. They enthusiastically push services your insurance won't cover and that you don't need, and your total bill can swing hundreds to thousands of dollars with no clear or timely explanation. Personally, I was quoted a multitude of different costs across the same visits, sent a request to pay more than I owed, and was told I "wasn't allowed to leave without paying" despite no one being able (or willing) to provide an itemized ledger. Worst place ever had an appt today to get 4 teeth removed as soon as I walked in gave my info was then told they cancelled all my appts with out any notice. After this I spoke with Micheal Anderson manager for office was very rude as a manager you are to de-escalate the issue he indeed did not instead he was very rude told me he's not my parent and that he's not there to call to inform me that I had an appt or that it was canceled. When asked for upper management phone number i was told they don't have one and just an email. the email that Anderson gave me was incorrect. As a manager that's disgusting to speak to someone like that. I refuse to be seen again by them and will be reaching out to someone higher. As a representative our job is to help explain and apologize and de-escalate the situation for a manager u have more responsibility and obviously Anderson can't do his job correctly and should be pulled from manager position. My family has been to a lot of different dentist offices through the years being a military family, and this is one of the absolute worst. The office staff is very pleasant; I want to say that up front. But this is a major corporation with ridiculous policies and is very money focused. They outsource customer service. It's a revolving door as far as staff. You can call and verify they take your insurance, then they assure you at the time of your appointment everything is perfect, but 8 months later they bill you for hundreds for a cleaning of all things. The one hygienist that's been there is an older woman who shames even people with healthy teeth and gums, no cavities. Yes, we have some plaque, because we can't seem to get in although we pay for insurance that approves 2 free cleanings a year. Isn't some plaque normal? Isn't that why you go get cleanings? We've found an amazing dental office much closer to us that doesn't give excuses of why they can't see a family of 4 in the same day. Will NOT go here again. I not only called the ins. co but the dental office to see if they were "in network" and was told they were. Was told cleanings were covered only to receive a bill 3 months later by Aspen Dental for $341.53. Since you cannot get any one to answer the phone there, I called the ins. co. AGAIN to find out why only to find out that sometimes Dental co. opt out of ins. plans. Not only was I told at the time of service IT WAS going to be covered and again a month after the cleaning not to worry, it all was covered only to find out it was not. Do not give these people your money you will be sorely disappointed. I gave them $5000 for their "top-of-the-line" denture only to have them break after three years they claim to have fixed them and a year later I find out they are so wore down they are causing issues with my jaw. So I called the corporate office. They then sent an email to the Okemos office and they calls me to tell me the warranty doesn't cover that issue. During the conversation with Okemos they told me if they were made improperly they would have broken of which they did, obviously, they know that because they fixed them when they broke. They still refuse to do the right thing. I am so irate with these companies these days as they do not take responsibility! Wonderful, as though I have the time to sit in court for this BS! Update: I'd like to take a second to update my review. After being contacted by the management/owners they have agreed to try to fix the issue I've been having with my dentures. Made an appointment for a cleaning. I was told that I would need x-rays as well since I hadn't been there in two years. Okay, fine. I will get the x-rays and my teeth cleaned. After the x-rays, they checked the gaps in my gums. I was told there were a couple of places that would need scraping. I had my teeth cleaned at a different dentist just a year ago, and didn't have any major gaps - I never have. They then "scheduled" my cleaning for a half hour later. I assumed that I could schedule the scraping at a later appointment if I decided to have it done. Then I was told that I can't have the general cleaning unless I have the scraping done. What a scam!!! They refused service to me because I refused their recommended treatment. I'm guessing that if I go to a different dentist they will not find any huge gaps in my gums. Well, I was a new patient today at aspen and had s terrible day. My appointment was at 8am, the first of the day. I got some xrays, and was put in a room, and had a quick exam from a hygienist. Was hushed when I tried to ask a question. Then was told to sit and wait for the dentist. At 910, I finally had to leave for work. I called back later to find out exactly what went wrong and was basically told that I wasn't as important as the oral surgery patients there that day. I will never return. read more

While Aspen might be fine for basic dental cleaning, I had an absolutely awful experience there. My guess is the main issue is a lack of organization/communication in their office. I went in for my first appointment, which involved a lot of waiting but NO cleaning as is typically done at the first appointment of every other dentist I've ever been to. I thought this was strange. They took my x-rays, I sat around for a long time, I briefly saw the dentist who looked at the x-rays, and I talked to the guy who handles payment/financing, and he basically told me about future work I'd need done. I had a broken tooth, but I was pregnant at the time, and they wanted me to wait until my second trimester to get work done, which I think is reasonable. When I set that appointment up, the people at Aspen told me that they would need to order the anesthesia my OB requested and that they would call me when it came in. I waited and waited but never received a call. Finally as my tooth started becoming increasingly painful, I called them, only to find out that they couldn't get the anesthesia that they said they were going to order. It was frustrating that they never called to let me know. At that time, they said they needed permission to use a different anesthesia, but that anesthesia was inconclusive in terms of its safety for pregnant women. By then, I was already unhappy with the service at Aspen, so I called around to find another dentist that had the anesthesia my OB originally requested. When I finally went in to see another dentist, they told me that Aspen had referred me to an oral surgeon for something having to do with my lower jaw. First, no one at Aspen ever told me that I needed to see an oral surgeon, and second there is nothing wrong with my jaw as far as I can tell. I ended up getting referred to an endodontist for a root canal. read more

Serious waste of my time, I get there and they just do diagnostics and nothing else--no cleaning, filling, nothing. There are other offices that are willing to schedule a full visit so you don't waste our time. If you ask for feedback about my experience don't be rude in response. Office manager has an attitude problem. We understand that docs are busy, but that doesn't mean people aren't busy either. Was a patient here for 2.5 years overall had pretty average care but I'm not really picky, recently switched providers to Aetna. Even as both the Aetna website and Aspen website say they participate with Aetna, they do not. I'm now out 200 bucks and have to find a new dentist. *EDIT 10/28* Wanted to be fair and update that I received a call back from Aspen and they do accept Aetna for current patients and there was some miscommunication of my status as a current patient. In my previous review, I described how Aspen Dental filled the same tooth twice in a row on accident, demonstrating gross incompetence. For the record, the regional manager called and assured me that I would not have to pay for the accidental additional filling. However, I'm still taking my business elsewhere. And it's true what others say about the cleanings; you have to schedule months ahead of time and won't get a cleaning at your first appointment. read more

Aspen still remains a factory of sorts for dental work (while the appt. was happening, the oral hygienist had to wait 2 minutes between counting the final quarter quadrant of my lower jaw due to some question another nurse asked the nurse assigned to us - We laughed just to deal with it) - But, this location specifically does care to change your experience for the better. Scheduling a full mouth procedure is possible, but does take more time to plan ahead in their system (still a slight issue but forgivable). Their response time to any problems I had previously was unexpectedly fast and noticeably different. A lot of people for the chain of command, but Kristin & Dr. Gill very much made everything run smoothly! The worst experience ever! My appointment was at 11. I knew I would have to complete paperwork so I arrived at 10:42. I did not leave until 1:13 and then they wanted to charge me for a cleaning which is covered by my insurance plan. They told me that they only give discounts for cleanings and that the cleaning was ping to cost me $199 out of pocket. They should be up front with people and stop wasting peoples time. The girls up front were so incredibly kind and helpful, and we're more than willing to answer all of our questions with pleasure. I had used this location in December of 2020. I had a a tooth chipped and went in two weeks ago for an quick exam...YUP I had a chipped tooth! Wow, I didn't even need to go to school for that diagnosis. They setup an appointment for me on September 20th, 7:00 a.m. for a cleaning and a then a filling. I told them when I was there for the exam I had quadruple by-pass surgery in May and was also diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. The response from the dentist was, "wow, you've had a tough year." I arrive this morning for my appointment to be told that the dentist said he can't allow my teeth to be cleaned or a filling to be done for one year after my surgery unless my cardiologist signs off on it! Hmmm, he didn't know that two weeks earlier? I have been released from my cardiologist and rehab people and don't even go back to the cardiologist until May of 2022! Now they get to charge for the double visit today where they did NOTHING and want to have me come back with my cardiologist gives permission. So, was the dentist incompetent two weeks ago, or was he incompetent today, I really don't see a third option. I was NOT impressed with Aspen Dental. Their staff was very friendly and kind, but the facility was unclean. I sat in the waiting room and watched the x-ray technician for a while. She touched the same buttons with rubber gloves between scanning patients, and the buttons were never sanitized. When I had my turn with the x-raying, I did not see the instruments cleaned, even though the plastic bag was torn covering the scanner in my mouth. I tried to let it go, I tend to be a worrier. I tried to tell myself they are professionals and know what they are doing. Once i was in the chair for my 'evaluation' things still looked a little grimy, cobwebs clung to the bottom of the cabinets. I wouldn't have let the Dr. touch my teeth until I saw the autoclave bag that the instruments came from. My Dr. also had quite bad body odor. It makes me wonder even more about their concerns on cleanliness. I canceled my cleaning and will not be returning to Aspen Dental, there were too many 'red flags' for my liking. read more

Very important to know: Aspen is a CHAIN business and has many lawsuits over its legal practice. Think of it as the McDonalds of dentistry. My personal experience with this one is horrible. They chose not to bill my insurance properly after months of contacting them to correct it. They claimed they lost my information after giving it to them twice and now a year later the problem is finally getting corrected after my lawyer threatened to get involved. My first appointment at Aspen Dental was, as was advertised, only x-rays and talking about what needed to be done. However, as I had a tooth that was badly in need of a root canal they did set me up with a specialist for the very next day. That appointment went extremely well. I could not have been more pleased with the care given me there. My next appointment at Aspen Dental (a bit of a mix-up on that scheduling!) was for cleaning. I was offered an extended care package (very expensive) but after talking with the hygienist we agreed on something a bit less extensive and expensive. She was very thorough and professional. I liked her and her attitude. I have an appointment scheduled for a fitting for a crown for the tooth the root canal was done on and will probably report back on how that one goes after it is done! read more

They will try VERY hard to sell you a $149 electric toothbrush you can get for $70 online. They will also hard pressure you to sign up for care credit to help finance the toothbrush and the special toothpaste and mouth rinse that come with it. (Total cost $249) They Will also push you to get a $67.00 advanced oral cancer screening and the dentist will not perform a standard screening and base the entire diagnosis on the ridiculous number of Xrays they insist you get. Adding insult to injury the tooth they filled for me actually needed a crown to begin with so I was back within the month. read more

I wouldn't even give this place a star. It doesn't let me not give it one. I was on vacation in Lansing from Texas. I went here over a month ago to have a tooth fixed. The web site says they do oral surgery. I had a tooth that broke that I needed fixed. They told me to come in and confirmed this did need removed by a surgeon. They then told me they could do it because I needed a surgeon. Ok that's why I came here because it says you have surgeons. So I have a few other things done and $1900 later we are done. Leaving with out my issues fixed. I come back the next day the have teeth whitening trays made. They said they will be done later. I told them I was flying back home to Texas I need to have them shipped. No problem they said. I get home and maybe 2 weeks after I get home I get a bill for over $300. So I call and they didn't apply I coupon to my bill. So we get that figured out. Now this was my second bill from them after I thought we got it figured out. Ugh! Then I ask them where my teething whiting trays are. This has now been over a month and I have still to receive my stuff. I called again today and know one has any clue what is going on. Poorly run office. I've been a regular patient at Aspen Dental offices in Lake Wales FL and East Lansing MI for several years and am now very disappointed. I have been trying to schedule an appointment for the past month for cleaning and checkup but am being told that they are booked solidly and no opening is available until November. When I asked why I was told by Misty, a receptionist, that they only have one oral hygienist on their staff. I told her that I would have to find another dentist but she didn't care. Recently I arrived at Aspen Dental for an apt. that I had scheduled 6 months in advance. After waiting for an hour to be seen, I approached the receptionist to find out why the delay. She informed me "things happen" that caused the hold up. I asked if this was true, why as a professional consideration, I was not informed of the situation because I was sitting right in front of the desk and she should have questioned why I had not been seen. She immediately offered to set up another appt. I initially made another appt. with her but cancelled it the next day. I wasted an entire afternoon because of this incompetence. Even before I had arrived for this appt., I had my concerns about Aspen Dental's professionalism. During my very first visit, the only contact I had with the dentist was a 30 second encounter to tell me I had two cavities without either reviewing the w-rays with me or even personally examining my teeth. I strongly recommend to anyone thinking about using Aspen Dental or anyone currently a patient, you need to demand that the dentist actually review your x-rays with you to verify a cavity even exists and have him/her personally examine your teeth/mouth. I have been having my teeth examined by dentists for over 50 years and never once did a dentist not personally examine my teeth or review the x-rays with me to explain what was happening in my mouth. That's the whole purpose of a dental appt. I would not recommend Aspen Dental to anyone who is serious about maintaining good oral hygiene.
