After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that it would be appropriate this year to go back to this dental office for a dental cleaning appointment and write a follow-up review. Dental cleanings are essential for maintaining optimal oral health and are key to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. I had an appointment to have my teeth cleaned for 11:00am this morning. A few days ago I received an email reminding me of the appointment and asking me to confirm that I would be there by clicking on a confirmation link on the email. I went ahead and confirmed after seeing that I had it listed on my cellphone calendar schedule. Yesterday, I also received a telephone call from them to remind me of the appointment and notify me that I would also be receiving a fluoride treatment not covered by my insurance that would cost $48. I confirmed that I would be there and paying this amount with my credit card. From last time when I also received this preventive treatment I knew that it helps strengthen your enamel and reduces your risk for cavities. I arrived at around 10:45am. The receptionist was on the phone and she had a young lady with a notebook on hand who seemed to be shadowing her to learn about how to do her job. I wasted there until she finished her phone call and then she asked me for my name. I gave her my name and told her I had an 11 o'clock appointment. She then mentioned the payment I needed to make for the amount the insurance wasn't covering and I told her that I was aware of it and was paying it with a credit card. I handed her my card and paid for it. She then asked me to have a seat and that I would be called shortly. I did. Two other people who were there before me were called and around 11:10am I was called in by my hygienist Kadie. I noticed she was a different one than the one I had last time and I welcomed this because the other one had forgotten to floss my teeth, one of the essential steps in dental cleaning. I had researched and found out that during these visits a dental hygienist is supposed to clean, polish, and floss your teeth to remove hardened plaque, tartar and bacteria buildup from your teeth surfaces. And that when combined with diligent brushing and flossing at home, dental cleanings help achieve and maintain healthy teeth and gums. The new hygienist Kadie took me to the room where she would be cleaning my teeth. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. She greeted me very professionally but at the same time amiable. She asked me appropriate questions about me my health and teeth. Then engaging in conversation to put me at ease. Following by treatments commonly performed during a dental cleaning such as Scaling, Polishing, and Flossing. During scaling, she used an ultrasonic scaler, which vibrated and sprayed a jet of water. She also used used hand instruments called scalers to remove plaque and tartar from my teeth surfaces. During polishing, she polished my teeth using a soft rubber cup and a special paste. This removed my biofilm on my teeth surfaces and will reduce plaque buildup without damaging my enamel. She then concluded the treatment by flossing my teeth. Then she went to ask my dentist if the dentist wanted to come in and examine my teeth, but the dentist told her that since there were no issues she would skip it this time until my next appointment. So then my hygienist Kadie proceeded to apply my fluoride treatment and gave me the instructions of when I could eat, what food temperatures to avoid, and when could I brush my teeth next. She also encourage me to floss more often. After asking me if I had any more questions for her, I asked the question of it was helpful to brush your teeth after lunch. She told me that twice a day was enough but it wouldn't hurt if it was convenient for me and at times when eating certain kinds of food. Then she proceeded to ask me what day of the week would be more convenient for me to schedule the next cleaning and time preference. After I told her this information and asked that I wanted to have her as my permanent hygienist, she scheduled the appointment for six months from now. My insurance covers dental cleaning twice a year. In concussion, I was very satisfied with the professional and kind treatment that I received from my hygienist and can understand why the dentist didn't come to see me, even though I would have liked that she would have. read more

We made one for 7am Saturday morning, when we arrived they said they cant glue it back in because they didn't install it!?! Went for replacement dentures mine had broken. The dentures they made were very poor quality even though they were their high quality and priced set. They were very rough and irritating to my mouth. I was pushed into unnecessary procedures, was not given a choice in quality of dentures. Was given a bottle of mouthwash but not told I would be charged for it. This used to be a good place to go but now I can't get my dental needs met because they are either too busy every minute of every day, understaffed, or just don't care about doing their job. Make the appointments for my family, make sure I have the time off from work/school, then get called the week before due to staffing or some other issues. REVISED -- The day after this review was posted, corporate reached out it to discuss this negative review. 10 days later, I have yet to hear even one word back from corporate or Dr Nicols who owns the practice. This problem has been ongoing since September 2020, and I have never once heard from Dr Nicols. It has become obvious that she doesn't care about the patients or problems, ONLY CAERES ABOUT MONEY!!! Original review-- 1 star because I can't give negative stars The initial process (extractions, temporary dentures & needed adjustments to temporarys) went well. The problem started with the permanent dentures. By their own admission, they completely botched the final product. When I sled for a refund based on their warranty of 100% satisfaction or a 100% refund, they offered me a refund of 1/3. When I flatly refused that offer, they asked for the opportunity to remake the final product. Which I granted because the ultimate goal was nice dentures. This process has turned into a complete joke!!! When it came time for the final processing, they presented me with a release form to sign. I refused to sign a release on a product I don't have. Who would be that stupid?? They said that release form is a mandatory step in the process. When I asked to show me a copy of the same form I signed before they made the bad teeth, which I knew I hadn't signed, they told me "someone forgot to give it to me the last time". That is their problem NOT mine. So I refused to sign it and they are now refusing to finish the process. Keep in mind they got 100% of the money UP FRONT in November of 2019. I paid $1450 per plate (top & bottom) and offered to accept the current pricing for the teeth ($1250 per plate). Their offer is $500 per plate, which is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!!!! I have now been waiting since September for my final product and they are refusing to finalize until I sign a release which relieves them of all responsibility and even says I could be charged more money if this product isn't right. After multiple calls to corporate, Aspen Dental Corporate refuses to make Dr Nicols do the right thing. They keep tell me that she owns the practice, and it's out of their hands. After multiple procedures at Aspen Dental at Valley View and then a clean and root scaling I expected my next visit to be a fitting for my partials. I arrived to get more xrays and was placed in the examination room. The dentist came in and looked at X-rays then started looking at my teeth giving verbal info to the assistant. She proceeded to tell me that I needed a couple root canals on top left and recommended having all my left wet teeth pulled and fitted for implants. I questioned her advice and she flipped on me and said with my bone lose she was offering me the best course of action and if I wasn't going to listen she had other patients to get to. How can I get implants with bone lose? How can my teeth be so bad after just 5 months and extensive work at previous appointment? sounds like a total scam! read more

This office and this company overall is the worst you could possibly go to. Their staff is not trained, their doctors don't stay for long and every time you go in, there are new faces. The wait time is ridiculous and their organizational skills are the worst. My aunt went to them to get a denture, which she received and paid for in full. She has since received a bill for $500.00 with no itemization or explanation for the bill. I was with her when she paid her bill in full and was told that it was in full. We have called and left messages and no one will return our call. She is 95 years old and this has been terribly upsetting to her. The owner of this practice does not care anything about the business, just the money and she makes that very clear. Would not recommend this dental office. We were told that first visit was complimentary so that ongoing dental work could be assessed, but we received an email insisting that we provide insurance information. When we tried to call the office we had to wait 20 minutes on hold. Upon finally getting to a real person, we complained about the long wait, and the front office yelled at us and then hung up on us. What a billing nightmare. At first, I was so happy. Great dentists and wonderfully friendly hygienists. But then the billing issues started. I decided not to have some procedures done and they charged me anyway. That was back in December 2023 - January 2024. It's now August 2024 and I've gotten nowhere. Do not get any work done here! Aspen Dental is a dentist mill for dental students fresh out of school that have zero real world experience. I went in with a chipped front tooth. They suggested I get both of my front teeth capped instead of just bonding the chipped tooth. Their reasoning was that the bond wouldn't last so a cap was a more permanent solution. So they took the mold of my teeth and instead of fixing the chip on the mold, they made the new teeth with the chip in it and then bonded the chip on the cap, completely negating the entire point of capping my teeth to begin with. Needless to say, the bond didn't last long and now I'm dealing with the same problem, only now I have two fake teeth up front. To add to the insult... They messed up my caps! They didn't set the cap in right so the tooth hangs over my gums in the back which created a crack for food to hide in that I can't reach with my toothbrush, not to mention how annoying a sharp ledge is on the back of my teeth. Now I've got one front tooth noticeably longer than the other. They said it wasn't a big deal and would be fine. Up-selling unnecessary treatments is a big part of their business model. I got sold on a tooth whitening. No big deal, who doesn't want whiter teeth, right? Well, anybody knows that the initial brilliant white only last a few days before it goes down a few shades. But when they made my new front teeth they color matched it with my teeth that had just gotten whitened about 30 minutes before. So after a week I had a mouthful of realistically white teeth and then two neon white front teeth that look like Chicklettes, drawing unwanted attention to my obvious dental work. Very disorganized, unprofessional, unhelpful, and disrespectful!!! I made an appointment as a new patient last week. The person on the phone lied about how far the office was and scheduled me an appointment 50 minutes away from my house. Then they called me and left a voicemail saying that I had to verbally confirm the appointment or otherwise they will cancel it!!! It was weird to me because I had just literally made the appointment on the phone. The person apologized for calling again and said that it is the system who make them call again. The secretary could not find my appointment and kept insisting that I did something wrong because my appointment was not in the system. I showed her PROOF of the email confirmation and the phone call I made confirming the appointment. She had a blaming attitude and continued dismissing the fact that I had proofs. She also blamed the call center, and instead of taking responsibility for the mistake they made, she said it was my fault and that there was nothing they could do. Another lady kept telling her what to say behind a wall in a very unprofessional way, instead of coming out and speaking to me. They were completely unhelpful and rude, never admitted their lack of professionalism and asked me to leave because they were "fully booked" and did not have an appointment for me. I asked to reschedule ( because once again, I need to be seen ASAP) and she could not help with that either, saying that she can't make appointments for the other ASPEN DENTAL location closer to my house. How is that possible?? Not to mention that she said she could not do anything related to the issue I was there for because "they don't do that there and she does not know if the other location does it or not" ! How ridiculous is that!! I was told on the phone they provided the service and now it seemed like absolutely nothing was possible for this lady or the one hiding behind the wall. It was a complete waste of time and there was no sign of empathy or any intention to provide appropriate costumer service! I wish I had seen all the other terrible reviews before putting myself in this situation. By far the worst experience I have had at a medical office in all my life and that includes my cat's veterinarian. I had to come here because I made the mistake of signing up for a DMO and this is the only practice in the valley I could go to. I would have been better off going with out the dental work. First the girl that did the x-rays and the shorter nurse withe the curly hair and glasses were the only professionals in the whole office. The dentist was what I would think an army dentist would be like she took very little time with me didn't explain anything just left if for front office who wouldn't tell you anything except how much they except you to pay. No detail no explanation nothing. So after the 1st visit were the dentist spent all of five minutes with me I was brought to the front office where they presented me with a $2,000 bill for all the work and expected me to pay half up front. They didn't explain what everything was. I told them I wasn't going to do everything that was listed and I will be doing one thing at a time and would pay for that as I go..they were not happy. Oh they wanted to charge be a 165.00 for a tooth brush! I told them they can keep that. So when I wanted to start some of the work I called to schedule it and called and called and called. No one would return my calls for weeks so I could make an appointment when I was off. After calling the number you call when you schedule the first appointment asking why no one will answer the phone or call you back from the office I finally went to the office to ask what I have to do to make an appointment they got irritated like this was my fault. They did start the work and I came back for an extraction thinking it would be 2 they told me 3 why 3 I ask they didn't know and had to go ask the dentist. So we start the procedure and this dentist who again I think is and army trained dentist just starts shoving needle into my mouth no topical numbing and starts going to town like she doesn't even realize there is a human being behind those teeth. When this is over they slam this horrendous bridge into my mouth. Let me tell you I I could have taken a picture of my closed mouth from the moon sent that picture to a yak farmer in outer Mongolia and working with rocks and sticks he would have made something that fit my mouth better then this piece of crap. The next appointment I think I'm going to get my permanent bridge noooo that will be in 3 to 6 months. So I complain to the nurse and the front office about my experience so far and was told the office manager would call me the only thing I heard was crickets. For the last two weeks I've been calling to try and get this bridge fixed again to one calls me back so again I go to the office trying to get this fixed and I wanted to talk to the office manager. Worse experience I've ever had at any medical office ever. Took us 1 1/2 years to get an appointment after initial appointment (after 9 month wait) was canceled when they scheduled it on a day office isn't even opened and then three other appointments were canceled due to lack of staff. They charged for anything and everything. The dentist was literally in the room for less than 10 seconds and didn't even look at any of our teeth. Our bill had charges on them that were wrong and months later I still haven't had a phone call returned. This has hands-down been the worse doctors office I've ever had to communicate with. Definitely not my favorite dentist office I have been to. Super long wait to see the dentist once in the chair. No soundproofing so you can hear every drill and every conversation happening around you which I do not love in a stressful dental environment. They didn't explain things well. The x-ray technician was nice but other than that I would not come back to this dentist if I had a choice. I would not recommend this dentist office to anyone!! They pulled three teeth 3 months ago. The dentist kept leaving the room and they didn't numb me 100%. When they fitted my dentures I had that mess all over me! I went back a month and a half later because I could tell there's bone left in my jaw. They pressed around and said it was not. I made one more visit so they could adjust my dentures. They put that gloop on my dentures and left the room for about 20 minutes or longer!! I want to remind everyone that Aspen Dental is a scam. They scammed me out of 2,700! I went in had a consultation and agreed upon having my teeth cleaned (deep scaling). We talked about several things but I agreed to do the cleaning that day because they had an opening. I have had this procedure done before at a dentist office and it took 2 appointments. The girl completed my cleaning in 30 minutes and said I was completely finished. She rushed and I could hardly feel anything. It cost me $800. When the lady went over pricing she talked about 3 different things but when I checked out they charged me 2,700! I was very upset and made a complaint and the lady owner said it was a fair price. In other words sorry your out your money. I called the best dentist in town and had the procedure and it was total 800 dollars! A real Dentist. Come to find out I didn't have problems with my teeth it was with my gums. These people are only out for a Buck and practice poor and unfair treatments and prices. I arrived at 6:45 for my scheduled appt that I confirmed on the email last week. I was pushed into buying a tooth brush that I was told was $180, I looked up the price at Walmart and it was $75, and continuously asked repeatedly to buy it, for a total of 13 times they pushed me to get this tooth brush. Upon leaving, my dental insurance got the plan from them and itemized cost list, they denied it and asked me to go elsewhere. The total cost for my treatment for a scaling was almost 4,000. I've went to three other dentist that quoted the total under 1,000, each of them. They tried convincing me to finance the cost of the treatment, the itemized list when they dentist looked at it, said there was extra charges not even associated with the treatment. This is by far the worst dentist office you could ever visit. If I could give zero stars I would. My 80 year old mom had dental x-rays done there. When she needed an oral surgeon, Aspen refused to transfer the xrays to the surgeon via email. I offered to pay for Fedex, but they still refused. Aspen said she had to pick them up IN PERSON, but she is disabled and cannot drive. I live out of state. The oral surgeon says he always has trouble with Aspen. He says no other dentist in Roanoke does this. He says it's because Aspen advertises "free x-rays" so they don't want you taking them elsewhere. But Aspen does not do sedation surgery, so we have to go elsewhere and we have to have the x-rays. Insurance will not pay for the x-rays to be done again. So now we have to pay a driver just to take my bed-ridden mom over there again just to pick up the x-rays that could have easily been sent via email. This is outrageous. Plus, I called them 5 times and each time they said an "office manager" would call me back to help, but no one ever did. read more

Terrible! Showed up for two scheduled appointments today. The receptionist person informed me that their hygienist is out. So he said, "We need to reschedule your appointment and our next available appointment is September 17". Seriously! They were unprepared. The appointment was made months ago and I confirmed the appointments with a text message. I would not go to this place again. I called their central scheduling office to sign up for their advertised "free first visit" to include a "first time patient visit evaluation and cleaning." We had an appointment early, around 9 am, thinking we would be seen early. Wrong. We sat in the waiting room almost 45 mins. to be seen, while a banal daytime show from NBC was blaring. We were thinking, if they make first time people wait this long, they must have poor service. We were about to leave when they finally called us in. The people were friendly enough, did the evaluation, but when we asked about the tooth cleaning they told us "sorry, we only have time for the eval. today but you can schedule to come back for the cleaning." When I explained "we were promised the CLEANING today, the employees were all very apologetic but basically all said the same thing: "we are really sorry, and we hear this all the time. Somehow the calling center keeps promising things we can't do, and they never tell us, so lots of patients come here and go away angry." I couldn't believe it. I told them they need to either train the calling center people or get a new one, but they insisted they could NOT fulfill the promise that day. Realizing it was a bad outfit, we just left and do not plan to return. I got the distinct impression the business only cares about large numbers of people and money, not individualized care. read more
