Out of the three, Hunting Hills Family Dentistry was approved by my health insurance plan. Not only this, but for years they have been voted "Best Dental Group in Roanoke" by readers of The Roanoker Magazine. So I decided to go with them, and gave them a call to make an appointment. On my first appointment the receptionist gave me a warm, friendly, and welcoming greeting, made a copy of my health insurance plan card, and had me fill out their new patient paperwork. I did so as I sat in their comfortable furniture of their reception room. When my name was called, I went with a dental assistant who took me to an examination room where she asked me some other questions about my dental history and took x-rays of my teeth. Throughout this session she was very warm, kind, and friendly. Afterwards, my dentist came to examine my teeth. He had a wonderful personality and gave me the good news of having no cavities and answered any questions I had for him. Today I had my second appointment, this time with the dental hygienist to clean my teeth. She was also very friendly and nice, and kept me informed of all she was doing, effective ways of brushing and flossing, and gave me the choice of having a fluoride varnish treatment applied, mentioning that the price for this is not covered by insurance. I went ahead and had it done. She then scheduled my next teeth cleaning appointment in 6 month time and gave me a bag filled with lots of teeth care goodies. Right after this I went to the receptionist and paid for the fluoride treatment. Overall, this dental office has far exceeded my highest of expectations and I highly recommend it for its welcoming environment and supportive staff.

While those cancellations were for medical reasons during Covid, I totally took responsibility and blame for those cancellations. I abided by the business office requirements to call on the same day to see if there was an open appointment or pay hundreds of dollars in advance to schedule into the future. Without exception, my recent several years appointments have always been met and I have not cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice. I have had thousands of dollars of work done always paying in advance so I could schedule the appointments in advance. I brought this up with the Hunting Hills Dentistry scheduling and business staff several months ago. Additionally, I was told by an appointment scheduler, in a recorded voicemail at that same time, that I DID NOT need to call on the same day for an appointment anymore and would NOT need to pay in advance. He apologized saying he was making a note of it so I was relieved to hear that message. I was pleased that for my recent appointment; I WAS able to schedule the appointment by calling on August 6th and got one for August 12th. I did not have to pay in advance. I went ahead and tried online to schedule a filling that needed to be done. On Monday, August 17, 2026; another appointment scheduler, left a voicemail message; that again I am NOT able to schedule the filling I need in advance. I called the office to find out why I need to again schedule on the same day or pay hundreds in advance when I JUST scheduled an appointment in advance with no prepayment required? The clerk on the phone could not answer that question. That person said that the office manager would speak with me but that person has not called. Additionally, on 2 different occasions work done was not claimed with my insurance. The first time the work was not submitted to insurance was a few years ago on one of the first crowns I had done in this office. The second time was just recently when my cleaning was not claimed to my insurance. For a department that is always wanting me to pay ahead and is concerned about money, their failure to file claims have cost the practice over $1,000 in work I had done. I am hoping I am the only patient that this is happening to. It also makes me wonder if the billing they did do was accurate? Unfortunately, the business staff at Hunting Hills Dentistry have led me in different directions and I need to get the work done on my teeth without disinformation that they have repeatedly told me. My dentist Dr. Smith is excellent and so are the hygienists but the front-line business staff and management need more training on consistency in information given to patients and accurate billing procedures.

Four extractions as well as some serious dental work. I have always taken good care of my teeth. I am just not genetically blessed. 3 of the four extractions were root canals I had in my early 20's. Needless to say they had to come out. After healing up from that process and the additional dental work. I had to do the affordable thing and get dental partials for the open spaces. At this time bridge work is nit in my budget. But she made all of this process easier by her patience. She explained everything to me. She and her assistant and team (Tanisha) could not do enough for me. I want to thank them all. Even the front desk ladies and all who keep it going there. They do the best they can. Thanks Dr. Neil. Extremely disappointing, the dentist i seen was great at the vinton office, i am very happy with…read morethe outcome of my visit, but the monetary/insurance handlings were so terrible, first they said they were out of network, and my insurance said they were in network, i was only supposed to pay 700, and they let me pay them 2000$, which i did figuring id get back whatever i over paid, then 2.5months of waiting for a reimbursement, they paid me back 1k instead of 1300$, and then fraudulently charged my account again over 700$, and when i called them to ask about the fraudulent charges, they said it could take 2 days for a response.... so if you don't mind being over charged, and waiting months for things to be sorted out, then this should be your go to dentist, hopefully someone got fired and this is a one time occurance, because i am happy with my result, but sadly i cannot trust them enough to go back

My excellent dentist John Fitzgerald's dental assistant Melissa is a superb technician with a bubbly sweetheart of a personality, she's wonderful to be around. I was x-rayed and the dentist was very kind. He went tooth by tooth and had his assistant type up a 3 tier plan for each tooth and printed the plan out. He explained that even with insurance it would be expensive but he could save me From dentures. He said there were no limits to financial payment plans that suit all incomes. That it could be extended for years so that I could afford it and not have to worry. I loved him and his assistant. Upon leaving the chair he handed me a copy of the 3 teir plan with the details and price estimates for each teir. I got to the front desk they said my Ameritus Platinum insurance wasn't calling them back. The lady at the front desk said "don't worry about it right now." Then she took the paper of the price estimates and the 3 teir plan that my dentist had worked so hard to put together and said "in fact I'll just discard this for you" and ripped up the detailed info that the dentist had given me for a reason. I figured they were all of the same page. I mentioned that there were 3 teirs on there and she said the next available appointment to start the process was 4-6 months away. Again the dentist seemed to know the urgency of my condition. So I left in shock. My mom later came in and asked the dentist why does my son have to wait til March for his work to begin? The dentist - the same one that saw me told her "oh he doesn't have to wait he can come in anytime" I had to return for another extraction. When that was completed the dental assistant said do you want to go ahead with the other teeth or just wait? I'm numbed up and unable to talk. She said before I could get an answer to her somehow, "you want to just wait? Let's just wait then" I didn't want to wait but I had no way to Talk and say no do it now please. She seemed like they wanted me out of there until later. Now the front desk is another person that insisted on payment. I mumbled that I was told of a payment plan and options. (I had yet to see any of the options available that the dentist assured me of). She said " well how much do you want to pay because you owe us $800 already. I think another lady said we still haven't heard from his insurance so they let me go" But the demands and late notices and texts continued to become more hostile and urgent. So I wrote and asked 1) where was the payment plan options I was promised? 2) Why was my insurance not working and why was I told not to worry about it then later told to pay up) and 3) why was my 3 teir plan ripped up and 4) why was I told front the front desk I'd have to wait 4-6 months then my mom was told by the dentist that I can come in anytime? Later I got a letter saying we can't treat you. Your attitude and rudeness will not be tolerated. I immediately walked into the office with my cell phone rolling and showed the front desk my letter. The dentist said all of your communication with us was rude. I said I was simply asking why nothing was done as promised. The front desk had their own set of rules based on who was working that day and that I was told about payment plans and never offered any, told not to worry about paying then harassed to pay, etc. the dentist said "well we can pull up your communications" I said good! It proves my points I wasn't trying to be rude but literally nothing was consistent between one person to the next - the dentist didn't seem to know what the front desk was saying. The other front desk lady didn't know what the First Lady had told me. The dentist seemed unaware that I was told to wait at least 4-6 months then told my mom to have me come anytime. I mentioned that the costumer is why they exist. And the customer had rights and in any business the customer deserves the benefit of the doubt. I'm reporting all of this to the state and to the BBB. Gaslighting a customer for being woefully inept in their communication and bedside manner is wrong. I'm sure teeth cleanings and occasional work is met with friendly smiles and service m. But if you have lots of work you need done, beware that even holding them to their word will result in being denied treatment and kicked out of their dentistry.
