    In four words, This Is The Place!…read more I am 66 and have been confined to a wheelchair for the last couple of years. When my wife needed surgery on her foot (no weight-bearing for ten weeks) she decided that she needed some sort of a break from having me home all the time. I have Home Health Aides who get me up and also back into bed. I was in a local rehab and a retirement community (for more rehab) after the surgery that put me in the wheelchair in 2007. I wasn't keen to go back to a retirement community, but it was necessary. I had bladder infections and odd colds that were going around the community. When I came home after over a year I had trouble with my bowels and I thought all of this was par for the course. This time I was determined to pick a better place to stay. I looked around on the web, and one of the places that caught my eye was Amesbury Village (AV) in the next town over. I wanted a place with Internet access and a generally higher standard. AV didn't have Internet (sort of) so I was resigned to having a crap shoot on the services. I was booked in for respite care for three weeks in May 2010. I never thought I'd recommend a retirement community, but AV is so good I can't let it go unnoticed. The negatives I mention later may need more words than the positives, but the place is great for rehab, respite care, and residential stays. If you or your elderly relatives need attention, in my view you'll have trouble doing better. The main reason for this is the staff. I've been in communities where half the staff is just there because you can get a job as an aide with little training, and in those sorts of places they just want to get through their shift with as little work as possible. One place I was at had an aide called "Lost Larry," who often vanished from the night shift for several hours. He always had a glib explanation for his absence, and the rest of the staff had given up trying to find him. In all my time at AV, no-one ever failed to do their job, and most of the time they would go above and beyond to satisfy your needs. My specific need was for extra cookies in the evening snack (not that I needed them, I was just greedy), and if one aide satisfied such a selfish need, then every aide from that night on would automatically give me the same every night. But it's not about spoiled brats like me. Retirement home residents are mainly made up of people with dementia and Alzheimer's, and when they're not being combative, they're staring at the walls. But people you might call no-hopers got plenty of staff attention. I couldn't do this with those people, but the staff is dedicated. And when you've looked around a bunch of retirement communities, they all look the same. You really have to see them between nine a.m. and six p.m. So let's give a big hand to the people who work there. Staff Nurse Andrea and her afternoon/evening crew, and Staff Nurse Jane and her morning people, including Ms. Boom-De-Ay (sorry, in-joke there). I can't think I've met a single person there who I thought should be replaced by someone with a better attitude. There's plenty to do, but of course most of the people there love the old folk's staples like bingo and old-fashioned music. But Jane, the Activities Director, along with her staff, have a whole host of things going on. While I was there we had a visit from a guy who brought along a whole bunch of exotic animals, including a sixteen-foot Burmese python, a smaller snake, a rat, and a whole gang of more cuddly creatures. Almost all the residents watched and stroked the beasts. To give you some idea of how the staff cares, I had an appointment at a hospital on the day when the lift broke for a couple of hours. Donna, the Unit Manager, not only apologized profusely, but called the hospital to say I wasn't coming and fixed up an alternative date and time - all without asking. Although AV keeps its residents on the floor that their rooms are in, many people can roam around. I'd often go down to the sun deck and work on my tan, while watching cardinals at the bird feeder and squirrels athletically swinging down to get to the seeds first. This used to be my favorite place to avoid Jimmy and Colleen of the Therapy Department, but they found me in the end. What's not to like? Not much. In order of annoyance, from least to most: The elevator is slow and unreliable, but it's better than some I've seen and a replacement would cost a million dollars. The food is good by residential home standards. If you like old folk's comfort foods, it won't be too bad. The lack of Internet: Not total, as you could pick up poor signals from someone's network a hundred yards away. And the worst point? The lack of reliable hot water. Quite often you couldn't shower because the water was barely above cold. They should do something about this as soon as possible. But in spite of these faults, I'd go back if I have to.

Read the fine print- they are legally allowed to do that. The staff and aides are absolutely delightful and have been fabulous but the upper mgt and corporate people are only focused on $$$ and not your loved one and your family. We were told mom's needs were beyond their "scope of care" and we needed to find another place for her or to pay for a private aide to be with her 24/7. Atria didn't assist us in finding an aide, that burden fell entirely to us. We were also not guided in our search for another facility to move her to. One staff member said they aren't allowed to mention other facilities. When it came time to cancel the autopay- they neglected to do it and we had to intervene at our cost. We were not a priority for them anymore. It is a beautiful place and they have the facade of looking out for you- but you are a customer and that is how you will be treated. In the area- you will find more caring places- less corporate minded. Elizabeth Calsey House is a total gem. Avita is nice. Haverhill Crossing is also nice and Bridges in Andover is great. Good luck.     The worst they will tell you how they will bring you to Dr appt.'s but don't tell you only 10 mile…read moreradius and that they can only take you 2 days a week. The food is the worst. My family member has been living there for 2 months and still hasn't been able to get any physical therapy. They will tell you that they will do a lot of things for you which they will for an additional charge. Please do not put you family member here because it is the worst!

    I give it 1 star just because I have to select 1 but thumbs down is my rating. This place sucks…read morewith 24 hr care, hasn't been 2 years I've had their service and had 200+ people come to my house. I've had nurses who need help with taking care of issues like PTSD come take care of me and it's like i have to take care of them, a lot of unprofessional people like nurses who don't even know what a pressure cuff is etc. The night shift people come in shower caps, fuzzy slippers and clothing ready to sleep and is what they do. I'm a paraplegic and need to be repositioned every 2 hrs while in bed and if I dont scream their name to wake them up they'll sleep through the whole shift. The owner Chris all he worries about is a paycheck and sends anyone to the patients house just to cover his ass and say his employee was here, I've had my narcotics stolen(about 60 dilated pills and 20+valium), their first nurse overdosed me on valium to where I had 4 breathes per minute when emts arrived. It's only a few good employees they have and it suck they have to work for this poor service giving company. Overall from 1-10 I'll give it a 0.5 just to be nice. Att. DAVID MARTINEZ

Someone staying at my mothers, had to wake up and then go wake up the staff, physically shaking them awake a minimum of 5 different times. My mother also would get out of bed (she was not suppose to be walking unattended) to wake up the staff when she needed to use the bathroom. When I reported this to company they assured me they would not send the same person again, yet they did! As it continued to happen, I called the owner, Chris Littlefield and complained. He offered me two free nights, even though I was terminating their services so that we would end on good terms. I accepted the two nights. On my mother's next credit card bill there was a bill for a night of service. Chris then denied he had offered me two nights! He told me regardless, that he would have it removed from her credit card. He did and then three days later, they re-billed my mothers card! In addition to these issues, we had nights were no one showed up for their shifts, came late to their shift and left early. My mother's health and safety was at risk, while this agency was responsible for her. I would never use them again.

    Our mother was a resident of Brigham Manor for a year. This review is mixed…read more 1. Many of the staff people who we met were kind and caring. Some were not. 2. Mom was treated well during the day, overall. Night time was a different story, thanks to understaffing or staff who hated to be bothered. Imagine being in your nineties, having lost mobility, eyesight, hearing, your husband, your home, etc. and no one comes when you need to use the bathroom? Imagine the sense of shame you have, lying in a urine soaked bed? Imagine getting yelled at by a staff member for being "too demanding" or for messing the bed? 3. Mom shared a room with a woman who had dementia and who had her TV running 24/7. The room was clean, but her end of it was furnished with a shabby dresser, a tiny nightstand and a chair. When family came to visit, one of us had to use a commode as a chair; others stood, or sat on her bed. Not very family-friendly. 4. Don't be deceived by photos of happy staff and residents on Brigham's website. Despite occasional events, every single time we visited, we passed a common room where dozens of seniors looked warehoused. They stared at the floor, walked around aimlessly, weren't engaged much by staff. Mom got to the point where she refused to go out of her room. 5. Hallways were filled with overflow that couldn't be stored elsewhere. A room for private family visits (for a birthday party for example) didn't exist. If we called ahead of time, a staff meeting room would be made available for us for this purpose, but sometimes there were scheduling conflicts. 6. Mom couldn't see well and needed help with her meals. Staff would often bring her tray in and then leave her to fend for herself. I mentioned this to a nurse and she replied, "Oh, they do come back eventually." 7. We paid to have a phone available next to her bed so that we could call. Because of the cramped room, staffers would repeatedly move her phone to make room for other things so that she couldn't reach it. Sometimes they put it in her nightstand drawer! I'd call, the phone would ring off the hook. I'd then call the main number and a nurse (sometimes huffy) would go to her room to move the phone closer. 8. Our greatest gripe concerned finding black and blue marks on mom's wrists. Staff told us that "maybe" she hit her wrists on the bedrail. The marks went all AROUND her wrists. No one bangs bed rails with their wrists while turning them all the way around. Someone clearly GRABBED her by the wrists, the marks indicated it. Mom also told us once that someone yelled at her and threw her onto the bed. Our mom was a sweetheart all her life, always doing for others, putting herself last. She didn't deserve this, no senior does. We complained to staff, and I wanted to move her to another place or file a complaint, but a sibling, who had power of attorney, replied that they were all the same. No nursing home is perfect, yet despite some nice staff people, Brigham Manor is cramped, depressing and - I'd say - risky in terms of the possibility of elder abuse. The state of Mass. - which subsidizes some residents there - spends millions of dollars on things like assisting illegal aliens, when it could be improving the end of life experiences of hard working US citizens who shouldn't have to end up in places like run down, understaffed, Brigham Manor.
