I've been treated by Dr. Mathew Welch for 10 years. He repaired a partially detached retina discovered while being examined for an unrelated issue. Dr. Welsh and the staff here are great! He has been following me after treatment for Retinopathy which required monthly special medication injections into the eye for a year. Let me start by saying that if you an appointment at this clinic, you better prepare to be there all freaking day. Since you walked in, the front desk girls are so ridiculously disrespectful, they are loud, talking about personal business going on with them, they make fun of elderly patients talking in Spanish, so they don't understand, because yes, most of the patients there are Caucasian, but the front desk staff is so uneducated, there is 3 girls and they are laughing at the top of their lungs about the poor patients there waiting. When you finally get to be seen there is one specific lady who you can hardly understand what she says. The care they provide it's okay nothing more than normal, except that they take 3 hours for you to see the doctor, because I guess there is only one doctor on site and he does everything, at least that's what it looks like. He was on a laser surgery and we had to wait 3 full hours to be seen. It's ridiculous the amount of time, but anyway, just be prepared if you are heading to this office. read more

They are quick about getting you back to take pictures, etc., then take you back to the waiting room where you wait for hours. No guest wifi. I can't recommend this place highly enough. I've been having vision problems for a year and a half after a vitreous detachment and cataract surgery. I'd been to 4 previous doctors and no one could tell me what was wrong or offer any suggestions other than to use drops which did nothing. I saw Dr. Welch yesterday (and his awesome associate) and very quickly learned I had floaters that could be removed with a vitrectomy. I'm eagerly awaiting my surgery to fix it. My wait was short and I had several tests so if you have a problem, realize you'll likely be there a couple of hours. But I waited only a couple of minutes in the final exam room for the doctor. Everything was smooth and there were no long waits between tests either. A top notch facility! I was very impressed! read more

The care is acceptable but be prepared to wait in a dark cold room with your eyes dilated for 3-4 HOURS. My appointment was at 9:00 am. Saw the nurse at 9:20 to get my readings and scan. Back out to the waiting room for 45 minutes. Then called back to an exam room for another hour wait. I went out to the nurses station to see if I had been forgotten. The nurses told me the NORMAL wait time is 3-4 hours. Bring a book and a sweater. read more

Not impressed! They scheduled surgery, at a facility they have have partial ownership in, and when we got there they told us the weight for the patient is more than they can take at this facility. Stopped by the doctors office and their scheduling department is "overwhelmed" because they have some people out sick. So, two of us took off of work to have this procedure, and now are in an indefinite holding pattern until they get organized. Thumbs down! read more

When you call to schedule an appointment they say it'll take 2-3 hours. What that means is that you will spend 2-3 hours in the waiting room. It is utterly disrespectful to make patients wait around for hours for the convenience of the providers. Our first appointment here is defintely our last. I went to the 1750 E Glendale Ave, Phoenix office. They are a mess. I had an appointment...but that does not mean anything. They overbook worse than a cheap airline. They are very complacent about the need for every patient to wait 2 - 3 hours before they get to see the doctor. If you have no self respect and want to be around people who will treat you like a worthless person, by all means go to Associated Retina Consultants. If you actually want to see a professional, go elsewhere. I arrived a little early for my appointment and checked in. I sat in the crowded waiting room (about 45 - 50 people were there already). About 12 minutes after my appointment time, I got called back - Cool, right?! Wrong. The technician had me do the eye chart, look at a graph paper with a dot on it then put numbing drops in my eyes and dilated them. She then grabbed a tool from a hall table that another tech had just put down and put it in my eyes one at a time to test the pressure. She said it wasn't working right and grabbed another pressure measuring tool from the hall table and applied that to my eyes. I wonder how many eyes those tools were applied to that morning without any kind of cleaning...ICK! The technician then sent me back to the waiting room ...for a few minutes... Two hours later, I still was not called back to see the doctor. I checked with the desk to make sure that I had not missed something and was informed that every person has to wait 2-3 hours to see the doctor. I asked why and was told that is the procedure. 30 minutes later, I was called back to see the doctor....HOORAY?! Nope. I got back to a room and was told the doctor would be there in a few minutes. When I asked if she meant a few minutes or if it was going to be 30 minutes or more...she said it would not be more than 10 minutes. 20 minutes later I gave up. It was obvious they think their patients are worthless people, they have no consideration for the time the patients have to sit there and wait. They seem to think this is some bizarre game...they would be excellent at selling time shares...promise everything and deliver nothing. I thought it was just this office, but the workers assured me that this is the practice at all Associated Retina Consultant offices. They were pretty awful people. Inflammation of the retina check up. I do have to say that when I had this issue arose they got me in that afternoon. Put on steroids. Follow up was a nightmare. 4:30 appt got out at 7:15 pm. Indicated to him patients should not have to sit in the office for 3 hours plus burning out their staff. Wanted me back in 4 weeks but he did indicate they had a specialist on my condition in a different office. You guessed it I jumped on it. I had a Doctor's appointment at Associated Retina Consultants in Prescott, AZ, with Dr. Alan Gordon on 12/14/2023 at 10:55 AM. The check in was routine. The technician call me back at 11:45am. I read the eye chart, they dilated my eyes and took some pictures. She then told me to go back to the waiting room and I would be called back in 1 to 1 1/2 hours. At 1:10PM I went to the reception desk and asked what was talking so long? The receptionist told me that the normal wait time is 2 1/2 to 3 hours or so, and at this point she said it would be at least another 1 to 1 1/2 more (That means that I would not see the Dr. until 2:15 / 2:30. So if that is the case, why make an appointment?). I told her that was unacceptable and not to bill by insurance. The receptionist said that I should call the Phoenix main office, which I did. The Phoenix office told me I would not be billed because I did not see the doctor, and that they don't have any control on how the Prescott office is run. This Prescott office does not care how long a patient has to wait. I got the distinct impression that the receptionist thinks this is just normal and their patients have nothing else to do except to wait for their call. I have had less wait time in an Emergency Room. If you are looking for a Retina specialist, I would NOT recommend Associated Retina Consultants in Prescott, AZ. I know that Associated Retina Consultants have other offices in Arizona, and I would hope that those offices are managed better. I would NEVER RECOMMEND THIS OFFICE for any type of treatment or exams. read more

Actually for the Prescott Valley location-My 2 visits to see Dr. Jaime R. Gaitan, M.D. were extremely satisfying. All the staff are very friendly and Dr. Gaitan answered all my questions for my 3 week & 3 month follow-up after emergency Detached-Retina surgery. I had a new patient appointment today at noon. I finally left the office at 3:45 after still waiting to see the Dr. I did however go through a very lengthy medical history inquiry which felt like it was to kill time. When I told the assistant I was leaving she said "you are in line now for Dr. Gordon" I said, well a intern just diagnosed me and I have already been here almost 4 hours so I am leaving. She then told told me the "office" should have informed me the wait time would be 3 to 4 hours. They DID NOT. If they had, I would have found another office. That is totally unacceptable. This is the truth: it's been one full month since I walked out of their office after checking in, seeing the technician for an eye pressure "pre-exam", waiting 2 hours for the doctor...this is all post op for a vitrectomy...a pretty involved retinal surgery. And this is after about six office visits which all involved at least 2 hrs of waiting to see a physician. I told myself if this wait goes to 2.5 hrs (like all the others) I'm walking out. So now it's been one month and they have never even called to check up on me. AMAZING. The singularly worst experience I have ever had with a physician's office in my life. Can you even imagine a doctors' office who would not follow up with you an entire month post-surgery? Like, "hello, are you ok?"WOW. Super incompetent. read more

I hope you are in no hurry for your appointment. The Phoenix office (Glendale Ave) will usually tie you up for 2-hours. We have never been seen and treated in less than 2-hours for any visit we have ever had at this office. When you point out the long delay no one seems to care or take any action to speed up your visit. Sounds like nothing has changed there...The LAST time I was there I had the first appointment of the day sat in the waiting room and a couple of people started to straggle in, finally I was called in now this was for a post op. visit. Had the usual procedures done before actually seeing the Dr. sat for very long time and a young man came in I think he was an intern and following the Dr. in practice. He sat at his computer and turned and said " all looks good" and left. I was in a room directly across, door to door with a staff room and heard my dr. joining staff in conversation about Bob Evans restaurant... coffee etc. this went on for what seemed like an eternity I finally got up, poked my head out and saw the dr now looking at his phone I walked right passed him as I left and he never looked up he was so engrossed. I got a phone call which I didn't pick up, from the office...I don't even remember what they said anymore as I didn't matter anymore to me as I like almost everyone on this review thing had exactly the same experiences the long waits and the listening after you finally get a room the laughing and chattering of my dr. with staff in the hall really just makes you feel like you don't matter read more

The doctors are excellent but scheduling is horribly stressful. If you have kids that need to be picked up or people who depend on your presence at home or work, do not come here unless you can get the first appointment of the morning (which is usually months out). Though they may be here to help with my eye, they are affecting my blood pressure. I'm filling this out while sitting in the waiting room for two hours now. It is 4:30. Their website says close at 5:00. Front desk says it's actually 5:30 but that they stay until every patient is seen. How does that kids who have no ride? How does that help a diabetic parent who needs to be fed? How does that help babysitter who has to get home to her family? It does not. I'm reading some of these reviews and they go back years. I was not given the luxury of picking this team. I was referred. There are 17 people out in the waiting room at this moment. I am so upset!!! read more

Scottsdale Office: Yesterday I had appointment for 2:45, did the online check in before I went there to save time. Little did I know that saving time was the last thing the people in that office care about. At 3:45 I went back to reception window to find out what is the issue, now an hour later than my scheduled time. (I was not the only one who had travelled to the reception area to try to find out what was the issue, and how long would it be.) It's not like they do surgery there. She of course has been instructed to tote the company line, "it has been a busy day", etc. so I ask how many in front of me, she says 3, which means at least another half hour. There were others in the reception area waiting, the place was buzzing, people were pissed off. And, btw, this is not the first time that this has occurred. I can understand a doctor's office being a bit behind schedule, but more than an hour is unacceptable, with no explanation. It's like we drive the bus, you pay, now take your seat. I left! read more

My experience here has been dehumanizing. Throughout my treatment for a detached retina I have been made to feel solely as a device to transport my eye through an assembly line and to deliver payment. While the eye has been effectively treated, not once have I been asked about how I am coping with the loss of vision or offered any help in this regard. Associated Retinal Consultants is a wonderful medical practice. Yes, you might have to wait past your appointment time to see the doctor, but it is worth it. The Doctors and all of the technicians are the best. Yes, they are busy, But would you rather go to a busy restaurant where you have to wait a half hour to get seated, or to one who has 3 customers because the food is cold and the drinks are warm. Did you ever wonder why you have to wait? Today's doctors are controlled by insurance companies. They need to schedule 3 patients per hour and give each exactly 18 minutes. The doctors at Associated Retina Consultants are meticulous in their patient care. They take as long as they need with each patient. Think about it. Don't you want a doctor to spend the time they need with you? Also, some of their patients are referred as emergencies. A retinal tear or a detached retina could cause blindness. If it happened to you, I'm sure you'd be thankful for a practice that works these emergencies into their schedule. If you read these one star reviews, you will find them to all contain the fact the the wait was too long. What a ridiculous reason for NOT choosing a doctor. read more

In June of 2016 I had emergency retinal reattachment surgery in both eyes by Associated Retina Consultants. Tomorrow is my one year follow up. TODAY they called to tell me my insurance is no longer accepted. This was after they called yesterday to confirm my appointment. This is very poor care for patients to give no advance notice, even though they admitted they've known for at least a month. The doctors I dealt with over the past year were very good. However, this incident is a continuation of a lack of professionalism and knowledge by the office staff. I would also agree with other reviewers about excessive wait times at appointments. I would like to leave a better review for the doctors, but to be treated this way by the organization is unacceptable and I would not recommend using this company. read more

Anyone considering coming here really should read the reviews. They have 0 respect for their patient's time. I've had 2 different eye procedures here and the scheduling is always a nightmare. The most resent one was a retinal detachment. The doctor said it needed to be fixed asap and that scheduling would call me. Well, they call me the morning the doctor said I'd need surgery and they schedule me for the very last spot at 515. I had fasted before per their recommendations and the woman said "oh just have breakfast and 1 cup of water and then fast again from 9 am to 5". Wow... The staff saw me that afternoon, and made sure I got out of their office in time to catch a flight that evening. This has been the slowest process ever! We have been to multiple offices in this group and this one is the worst by far. Took at least 45 minutes past our appointment to even get back to the room to be initiated in the process and it only got worse from there. This was by far the most frustrating experience I have had taking my grandma to the eye specialist. I highly recommend the two offices on the east side of the city. I'd give them a zero if that was an option. While I have empathy and consideration for all doctor's offices, and I certainly can afford them the benefit of an occasional scheduling mishap, that is NOT the case at this practice. I have been seen there for 3 different appointments and two additional ones that I had to leave and reschedule after waiting in excess of 3.5 to 4 hours past my scheduled visit time. When you address this with the staff you are promptly dismissed and told that is the way it is...the doctor always over-schedules and runs excessively late. So unless you can afford to take the entire day off work and wait to be seen for a brief evaluation after you have been in the lobby 3 plus hours with painfully dilated pupils I'd say please look for a doctor that actually cares about the patient and shows respect for your time and medical treatment. read more

This is a review of Associated Retina Consultants' scheduler/scheduling protocol. This is not a review of a specific location or the physicians of the practice. My mother recently had some sudden changes in one of her eyes. I asked my friend, an ophthalmologist with retinal training, for some advice. My friend suggested I see a retinal consultant. I called this practice to make an appointment. They picked up right away and after few initial questions, I tell them the reason for her visit is vision changes. Without any additional information, the lady I spoke to over the phone said that "this is a specialty practice" and my mother should go see her normal eye doctor for vision changes. I asked her to double check with another person and further elaborated my mother's symptoms to her, hoping to communicate that it was not normal vision change. She asked few more questions, one of which I did not know. After clarifying with my mom, I called this practice back to provide them with the information they sought. I spoke with a lady again, not sure if it was the same person. I re-explained everything and when I got to the question I was unsure of earlier, the lady stopped me right away and told me that my mother needed to go see a normal eye doctor first. I verbalized some slight frustration and asked if this was normal protocol. I explained to her that my mother has insurance, that the doctors can examine her and after all is said and done, essentially bill her/make money off her even if there is no intervention needed. The lady responded that this was normal protocol everywhere and refused to give me an appointment. There were few issues with this situation: 1. The lady on the phone essentially advised me to seek care elsewhere. I do not know her credentials but usually people who ARE qualified to make medical decisions are not the initial point-of-contact for phone calls. I believe she made a medical decision without appropriate credentials. If this is simply a "protocol" for the employees to follow, then I do not agree with it and it's probably better I took my business elsewhere. 2. The person(s) I spoke with was extremely rude. Hopefully, she is not a reflection of the rest of their staff. 3. I was able to make a same-day appointment with a competitor's office down the street. Another retinal specialist. Exact. Same. Day. No questions asked. No hassle. My mother got in and out and received the answers she sought. Clearly, this office's employee's claim that "this is protocol everywhere" is ill-advised and false. read more
