My husband and I were first time home buyers. We were originally deciding between Assurance Financial (Damian Cook) and Delta Community Credit Union for our lender. While we liked Damian's customer service and our gut told us to go with them, we chose Delta as they had a first time home owner program. Delta had beyond horrible customer service, did not respond to emails or calls for days, and were not responsive in regards to the process including documentation needed, loan approval status, and the appraisal. We also had to go through multiple people and never knew who we were supposed to contact with different questions. The customer service was so bad, we decided to terminate our loan application with them and go back to Assurance Financial. We should have gone with our gut feeling! While Delta's rates were slightly lower, the level of customer service we experienced with Damian more than made up for it, and in the end, the difference was minimal. Damian was incredibly responsive, explained everything extremely clearly, and made us feel comfortable about the entire process.The experiences we had between Delta and Assurance Financial were so drastically different, it is remarkable. We went from feeling frustrated, nervous, and angry to comfortable, happy, and excited about the process. After hearing some of the not so pleasant experiences my friends and family had during their home buying process, my husband and I were quite nervous about purchasing our first home. One thing I have learned through this is no matter how well a team is, due to government regulations, it has become a sometimes frustrating process. If you have ever been through the mortgage approval process you know first hand that regardless of how squeaky clean your application, your credit score, your documents etc are, underwriting is always a thorn. It seems like they are almost insatiable.
