Steve, why you gotta be so rude? And as the owner of a Yoga studio? Really?? I bought a Groupon for 5 sessions. When I came in for my 4th, I was told my vouchers had expired. I was sure I remembered the expiration date on the groupon, so I pulled it up on my phone and showed you that the groupon was not yet expired. You then proceeded to explain to me how a perfectly valid groupon was actually perfectly expired. BEWARE: they produce their own expiration dates on the groupon vouchers once you redeem the first. In my case, this expiration period was 90 days. In your case, who knows? Well, Steve does, I guess. This is mentioned no where in the groupon. Steve, congratulations for mastering the calmest condescending tone I've ever heard. You can help me if I decide to buy a package from you, you say? Groupon is a way for you to let people try and then buy, you say?? Your empty class doesn't have room for another lowly Groupon leecher, eh? Well, Steve, a quick tip for you. Customer service is a key ingredient to converting a Groupon customer. Also, your attitude/energy today was unbecoming for a yoga instructor, much less yoga studio owner. I'm sure my tone is not nearly as condescending as yours. Perhaps if you had let me sit through just two more classes, I could've mastered it. Finally getting around to writing this review. I've been coming here for well over a year now and have had nothing but great experiences. Having taken classes with Steve, Rene, Kristina and Kerrigan. You can't really go wrong with any instructor. My personal favorite classes are the 12p and 4:30p I find the classes challenging in the best ways. I came here while on a business trip in San Francisco really wanting to take a rocket class because they can be difficult to find elsewhere. The studio is well attended and has a cute aesthetic with basic amenities. The instructor was warm and friendly. Towels and changing rooms provided but no showers. The instruction was pretty typical for what you'd expect from an ashtanga/rocket class. Straightforward with a focus on breath and asana - nothing mind blowing. For me, you go to rocket/ashtanga to be amongst the energy of the practitioners, not necessarily the instructor and that definitely was the case here. The studio has a great following of dedicated practitioners and when everyone is flowing and breathing together, it raises the energy in the room and creates a sense of community. For that, I would definitely go back. read more

Steve the owner was rude to me, read a few more reviews that state that, sadly I didn't read until now. Basically I bought a 5 class promotion, by the 3rd class in a not polite way he told me I had to be out of the class and that it was time to pay. I remained clueless and thought maybe I was not understanding because language english is still work in progress to me. But then I realized he was actually saying get out and pay. I told him I only tooked 3 classes a few times and he kept saying no, until he finally decided to look in his computer and realized I was right, he told me, "it is correct" and never apologized, but I trying to be friendly despite the incident, said thanks and went inside the room. I'm a very distracted person so for a while he even make me doubt myself. He made me feel like a liar and a thief :( so my feelings were hurted today, which is not something you would like to get from a Yoga teacher. It's such a bummer because on the other hand I really loved Rene's classes, he is very welcoming, encouraging and experienced teacher, he explains everything so good with so little words in a very good tone and pace, you can tell that he has a great understanding and awareness of the body, he focuses on linking breath and asana something I really appreciate. And overall I felt his positive and balanced energy. The studio is cute looking and has a lovely lounge, the temperature in the yoga room is warm perfect, not to hot not to cold, the students there were really nice and friendly overall. But then again for that big bad experience with the owner I wouldn't like to join. I will go to my last class with Rene and then good bye. A friendly advice to the owner, customer service is a big thing to keep an eye for a business, but even more important is to be nice, pacient and polite with other people because in the end we are all connected. read more

This place has no respect for new costumers. I recommend going to a studio where you will be treated with kindness and compassion. I arrived 10min late due to it being my first time trying to find parking. I spent 4$ on parking to arrive at the door 10min after the class started. The front gate was locked so I pushed the white button. No one came to the door so I pushed it again. The teacher glanced out at me with no acknowledgement and continued teaching the class. I waited for about 10 more min trying the button and waving to the teacher every time he looked at me. No response. So I left with no yoga in my day when I really needed it today! Very poor costumer service. Very low respect for new comers. read more

The wrong yoga teacher can really hurt your practice. I went to get my practice going again after a month without yoga, and the class was what I call jock-yoga. The teacher was mainly interested in practicing poses with his friend to woo the ladies of the class while assigning us different poses. They had their shirts off and I may as well have been pumping iron at a gym with jocks. A couple of students left mid-way during the class. It's just a matter of being a 20-something teacher who has no life experience and can't figure out how to connect on a spiritual level with yoga. Yoga is not a sport, it's a practice. For people who do yoga to lose weight, it's not about cardio in yoga, it's about changing lifestyle, eating different, and accepting yourself and doing cardio separately. I was disgusted at the jock mentality of the teacher. I had unlimited visits for a month and went only once because the practice is more important than the ego....and I'd rather lose the money than have a negative experience with something so positive. And, there is far too much ego in this place. I went with my girlfriend and it was early times for her in yoga and I had to re-introduce her in a better yoga setting. Want to "work out", then this is the place for you. But, yoga work out is temporary, kind of like Atkin's....yoga practice is for life, and this place is not for practice. read more

After visiting more than 20 schools in the Bay Area, I've come back to Ashta more than any other. The vibe is amazing, they're down to earth, friendly, warm and very committed to a communal, spiritual and very intense asana practice. The class is intense, yet very deep. Not only do the teachers here guide you through a very dynamic vinyasa, but they also put attention to the subtle transformation the Ashtanga poses have in the body. Real practice of body-mind-soul integration. And yet, they don't take themselves too serious, they are always friendly, chill and laid back. Thank you Ashta for making me feel like at home! This is a pretty awesome studio! I normally go to a different studio in SF right around the corner of my apt, but due to a closure, I was forced to look for a new place to practice this month. I've really enjoyed the two classes I've taken so far: Rocket II and Rocket Vinyasa: All Levels. The difference is that Rocket Vinyasa has a longer warm-up & more of an emphasis on the flows; and Rocket II did a few more inversions, and ended the class with deep back bends. Both the instructors were extremely helpful. They walk around to correct your posture, and they also demonstrate the more challenging postures at a good pace. Additionally the class size in this studio is actually much smaller than the studio that I normally go to, which means that there is much less body heat, and more room to practice. Since I am a handstand novice, I also appreciate always having a wall to practice with. I would recommend trying their 3 class beginner's pack for $20 to see if this fits your style. Unfortunately, most of their classes happen at 4:30pm and 6pm during the week. This is a tough time for us working folk to get to. Hopefully they'll consider adding some later weekday and weekend classes in the future :) read more

This place doesn't need another 5 star review - so I hope I have something to say that is helpful and not overstated. I did a living social deal here (an absolute steal btw) b/c it was in my neighborhood and am so glad I did. Firstly, because ashtanga is exactly the yoga I'm looking for as a counterpoint to my bikram practice - ab work, upper body strengthening, handstands(!), etc. The practice is energetic but challenging, so I find myself working hard but not left panting or over-exerted. The space is cozy, but after a couple classes you get the jist of things - newbies get there early so you can use a wall to balance for all the headstands. The instructors are friendly, but they also are not going to faun over you during your first class. However everyone figured my name out after a couple weeks of regular practice, and that is certainly appreciated. After two months, my experience has been nothing but positive. I do wish they had more beginner/intermediate classes available (at my current skill level and time frame I can only make 3 classes a week tops, and usually only do 1 or 2), but that will also change as I'm comfortable doing some of the more advanced classes too. In short - if you are only going to go every once in a while, its pretty good. For someone who's going to take things seriously, work hard, show up often, and commit, it's fantastic. btw - for the noobs who take anything other then the most basic level class - there will be people standing on their heads all the time. Just ignore them. Maybe you'll be one of them eventually! (ps, I'm not....yet) read more

Asta yoga is great. They have a lot of variety of classes, from super easy beginner to super advanced crazy town. A couple important things to note if you're planning on coming here: * They practice Ashtanga so you will be doing a lot of vinyasa. Yeah, your arms will be sore from all the chataranga. If you don't like vinyasas, you won't like the type of yoga they do at Asta. * Although they say they practice Ashtanga, they also seem to have some Bikram principles in place. Namely, they turn the heater on and keep it pretty cranked up during the sessions. If you're like me and you sweat just going for a run, you'll be dripping sweat by the time you get to shivasana. Bring a towel. * The room is carpeted (typical of Bikram). Take that as you will. Yes, it smells a bit of sweaty human but it's not moldy and therefore it doesn't bother me too much. Maybe it will bother you. * The classes are hard. Even the beginner classes are hard if you really push yourself. If you want to take it easy, you can certainly do that -- the instructors are good at telling you how to modify the poses. * I think there's tons of room. It's no yoga tree, but then the classes aren't as packed as yoga tree either. * They have a water dispenser but no cups. Bring your own bottle. * You can leave your mat there if you are coming often. This is great for me so I don't have to haul that shit with me everywhere. That's been my experience so far, after a couple weeks of unlimited yoga. I've not tried any of the more advanced classes (Rocket I or Rocket II) but maybe toward the end of my two months, I'll feel up to it. PS they have octopusses all over the place. I was trying all the yoga studios near my apartment, but kept wanting to be back practicing at Astayoga. Going there makes me want to deepen my practice and learn more (it's nearly addicting). I did the 5 pack, 10 pack, and now am committed to monthly. The yoga is authentic, breath focused (ujjayi), and the asana primary series sequence is one that you can learn and master on your own over time. I also love the room temperature and incense and light coming in from the back garden. They provide free towels and I believe a mat as well if you have a membership, but usually most people bring their own. It's a warm and pleasant place to be and learn. read more

My first experience with Asta yoga wasn't the best. There were about three people in total at the class. Ted was our instructor. After reading all the five-star reviews about Asta yoga I thought it was going to be a great experience. I found that the instructor spoke far too much versus other your teachers. This ended up being a distraction to actually relaxing. Also he was too touchy which made me and a couple other of the students feel uncomfortable. Hopefully my next experience is better. read more

4.5 stars AMAZING rocket classes!! I bought a Groupon for five classes, and will definitely go out of my way to use these, and purchase more (they have a 10 class pass for 99$ deal as well!) I took the Rocket I class. I LOVE that there's space for doing arm balances, head stands, hand stands, forearm stands, tripod headstands, king pigeon, and other more advanced poses - and also love that it's only ever presented as an option! LOTS of wall space - so for beginners I'd recommend grabbing a spot by the wall for any inversion type of stuff you might play around with. I deduct half a star because I don't like the carpet flooring, and also apparently sometimes they heat up the studio, which I'm really, really, REALLY not a big fan of (apparently it's only to 80 degrees, just to warm up the muscles, but still.. I freak out w/ heated yoga). read more

It's such a cliché, but finding Asta changed my life (or at the very least, significantly improved it). I'd practiced yoga on and off for years, but never found a studio or a style that I loved and stuck with. I'd taken a 3 year break from yoga when, on a whim, I bought a groupon for Asta a year ago. I thought it sounded a little intimidating but felt like I needed a challenge. I definitely found that challenge and I also found a group of wonderful, warm, and supportive teachers and a great community in Asta. I've heard people call Ashtanga "yoga for jocks", and I think that this couldn't be further from the truth. Ashtanga will help you get strong and flexible, and some day you may be able to do a handstand (I still can't, but who cares!), but there is absolutely no prerequisite of athleticism. At first, I found it a little intimidating, especially after seeing regulars do a dozen handstands in mixed-level classes while I could barely hold a plank. But after a few classes, I realized that the crowd at Asta is really non-judgmental and friendly and the teachers are awesome. The Rocket (and Ashtanga more generally) is not for everyone - if you want great variety in your yoga classes, this is probably the wrong style of yoga for you. I, however, love it. It's what I had unknowingly been looking for. I like the fact that knowing the sequence allows me to focus on breathing, alignment, and getting deeper into each posture. I don't have to stop every few minutes to check out what the instructor is doing - I can just keep moving through the routine. The teachers might vary the content of a class or the sequence of poses slightly, and each one has his or her own style and voice, but there is still great consistency across teachers. I feel so much better and stronger physically and so much more balanced and focused mentally and emotionally than I did a year ago. Thank you, Rene, Steve, Miranda, and Mark! I love Asta Yoga. If you are an experienced practitioner or have an advanced practice, this is definitely the place for you. Rocket II and III provide a challenging environment and the practice never gets stale. In the studio the level is high, the energy is high, and everyone is working together, flowing and riding the wave of their breath. I think Asta attracts dedicated yogis. I'm sure Asta is great for all levels, but I have found it particularly great for those who already have a strong practice and want to be pushed! So much love for this studio and their teachers. Rocket Yoga!! My mind is blown. I had no idea that this practice even existed until a few days ago, much less that it was created in San Francisco... and now I'm pretty sure I'll be hooked! I signed up for a class at AstaYoga through Fitmob. Fitmob labeled the class as Primary Series (I assumed it was Ashtanga) but I looked at AstaYoga's schedule and it was actually a Rocket Vinyasa: All Levels class. It didn't matter to me because I loved the class. Plain ol' vinyasa can get really boring sometimes, and Rocket Yoga is just FUN and challenging. Everything from the temperature of the room to the music to the ambiance was just perfect. Sarah was an amazing instructor. It's obvious that she has been teaching for a long time because her corrections were on point. I'll definitely be returning for more! read more

Your advertising is as fake as your bliss. AstaYoga is promoting (on line and on their flayers) an introductory of $90 for 90 days, nothing said when the promotion is over. Well, I made my way there today to find nothing but a borderline sarcastic and rude person on the front desk, which actually is the owner (!!) I got the full treatment; he rolled his eyes when I mentioned the promotion, was sarcastic when announced to me that the deal was over in July, never apologized for miss informing or promised to remove the fake information from their site. Honestly I am glad it didn't work, I expect more from teachers specially when it comes down to yoga. It would be hard to say a Namaste to this one. read more

Clean, close by, and UNcrowded! Wow! This is the first place I've done yoga in SF where I can actually fully extend my arms without touching my neighbor's sweaty face. Asta is by far the best yoga studio that I've practiced at both locally and internationally. While each teacher has their individual style, all are dedicated to seeing your practice flourish - giving you the space to find your own way into poses through verbal instruction, and assisting when guidance is needed. Without exception, they have the skills to aid you in consistently improving your practice. What I love about Asta most is that they focus on the mind and breath rather than the body. Ironically that focus allows the body to transform while simultaneously giving the mind laser like focus both on and off the mat. This place is awesome! One of my new favourite yoga places to go. I like that the studio is smaller (at least it is, compared to Yoga to the People) and there really seems to be a sense of community here. Even though I'm still new to the studio, both the students and teachers are very friendly and nice. The classes are a little confusing at first since the teachers don't seem to give a lot of cues, but after getting the hang of it, you'll notice there are lots of options you can take to adapt the yoga postures to students of any level. I never really used to like the carpet in the practice room, but I started to bring my really thin travel yoga mat since I was tired of carrying the heavier one around, and I found the cushioning of the carpet to be more comfortable than hardwood. read more

Nice spacious studio but they absolutly must invest in changing the asana room floor from carpet to either pergo or hardwood. It's so hard to balance! The classes are challenging. I think it's a great studio for yogis that want to develop and build their practice to very advanced levels. Each move from the beginner classes trains your body and prepares it for the more advanced sequences. The rocket sequence is very rigid. It seems that all classes start and end the same way so you should be particularly fond of this sequence to come here 3-4 times weekly.. but to be fair, i didn't attend a large variety so i can't say that this is the case if you are attending the full spectrum of class levels. I think entirely too much time is spent doing forward bends at the end though. Ultimatly, good yoga with purpose! I took the most classes from Mark who taught a great and very challenging class. read more

I love this place!! I got a Groupon for two months of unlimited yoga as a gift for X-mas, and just activated it. I went and i have never practiced yoga in a studio so nice or ever actually. I have been to a few beginner one-time yoga tutorials in the past and was not challenged at all, which is why i didn't continue to practice yoga. Asta is not like other classes. They really challenged me in a way yoga has never been able to. ( i like very extreme/challenging sports) They went through each pose and offered beginner, moderate, and advanced forms of the poses. I like that a lot because it allows me to challenge myself but at my own comfort level. i tried all the hard ones of course, and i fell one or twice (as did my kid she is so cute and surprisingly good) but the teacher guy came to help me adjust and gave the proper technique to get the move. They let my very well behaved 4yr old daughter watch/try quietly in the yoga room with me. She has never shown much interest in anything, but was absolutely taken by this class and the instructor. I really like this place and plan on attending a ton. read more

I just went to Shaina's Yin yoga class and loved it! It's a slower paced class focused on spending more time getting deeper in the poses and as a runner, it's exactly what I was looking for (lot's of hip opening). The best part is that she plays singing bowls while you're in final resting pose - it's pure bliss. I just did a drop-in $20 class because I wanted to give Yin yoga a try but I'll definitely be back. They have good intro packages and the studio is lovely - warm temps, soft lighting, relaxing incense. read more

Asta Yoga is a relatively new studio teaching the "Rocket" style of yoga. This is best described as a challenging reworking of ashtanga vinyasa yoga (as taught by Pattabhi Jois). It's the kind of yoga style that attracts more gymnasts and men than other classes. If you're looking for the most physically challenging class in the city, then this is a good place to start looking. Expect lots of arm balancing poses (handstands abound) and lots of challenging variations. The studio is a definite downgrade from the "It's Yoga" location on Folsom between 4th and 5th (now closed), but a definite improvement over the "It's Yoga" location at Folsom & 5th (now closed). If this doesn't mean much to you, then I'd just say the studio is average to slightly small. The place is getting pretty crowded during the popular times, and could stand to consider a larger space ... if they can find one. Floor is carpeted and soft. Room is heated, but more to an ashtanga temperature (80F) than to a bikram temperature (100F+). Mats and towels available for rental. read more

This is a super cheesy way to put it, but Astayoga changed my life. I found it when I was at a point where I wanted to take my yoga practice beyond just the beginner level. It was a little daunting at first, because there are some very talented and dedicated people practicing there who are more "advanced" so to say, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. I've been going regularly for a few years now and it's almost become an addiction. I love the Rocket series, I feel both physically strong and mentally calm after class. It's been amazing to see my body progress and develop, I have strength and muscles that I've never had before and, like I said, I also feel so calm and relaxed afterwards. The Rocket series is great because you really do get to stretch and strengthen the whole body. Ask questions, try out different teachers, and give it a shot! read more
