I took a hot Pilates class here on a weekday evening. The space itself is nice and I liked the overall studio, especially the disco ball and lighting, they add a fun vibe. That said, I wasn't a big fan of the carpeted floors, as they don't seem the easiest to keep clean. My biggest takeaway, though, is that the class didn't really feel like Pilates. To me, Pilates is more about slow, controlled movements, intentional engagement, and strength-focused work. This class felt more like a series of random movements that didn't align much with that style. It leaned heavily into cardio, felt repetitive at times, and wasn't very engaging. It was also extremely hot, and there was a noticeable, somewhat unpleasant smell in the room. read more

Who needs therapy when you can undertake some self-discovery sweating it out in a hot pilates class? I'm on a pilates class kick trying lots of different studios and classes in the 'hood. I took Hot Pilates (60 minutes) with Sean and it was amazing! It's the best class I've taken through Classpass this year and it's mat pilates--no machine. Classes seem cheaper than some bougie studios nearby. Funky Door isn't pretentious, but it's a very good workout. I loved the heat--it really made the class stand out. The instructor Sean was hilarious, personable, fun, and funny. Attendees seem more diverse in terms of age, gender, background, ethnicity, and body than at other pilates studios I've tried recently which is extremely refreshing. I will be back! The lockers don't have locks, but many people use them anyways. The interior is funky, eccentric, and real--a nice change-of-pace from the overly-clean, modern, and sterile typical reformer pilates studios (although they should definitely be clean if we are going barefoot!) I wasn't even mad that it was unclear (from Classpass--always blame Classpass, that's why I only do their free trial) that I needed to bring my own mat and towel. I paid $5 for their mat (which doubled as a towel) and it was necessary because some people who brought their own mats were slipping on them from the sweat and having trouble doing different poses! The guy next to me had to switch to the floor which, even though it's no-shoes in the studio, is definitely not sanitary and I would never! Will be back! read more

I've thoroughly enjoyed the hot pilates classes that I've taken here, so it pains me that I may not be able to come back again due to health concerns. After my most recent visit this past weekend, my feet started getting very itchy, red, swollen, and had a burning sensation. My friend that I attended class with also developed the exact same symptoms within a day of attending this pilates class. Note that this was the only workout studio that we've visited in the past 3+ weeks, and it's the only place that we've walked around barefoot in during the same time period. We had to go to the doctor and take medication for this foot problem, which we're still not recovered from yet. My doctor advised me to stop attending classes for now. I've never had this intense level of discomfort and itchiness on my feet before. I suggest that this studio consider scheduling larger gaps in between classes so staff can clean the floors more thoroughly. We went to a super crowded weekend class around midday, so maybe it would've been safer to sign up for the first class of the day on a less busy day to minimize potential issues. Either that or my friend and I maybe be allergic to the harsh cleaning ingredients that were used here. read more

I took a yoga class on a weeknight, and it was both fun and challenging. The instructor was very welcoming, and since it was my first time at this studio, that made me feel comfortable right away. The room had very cool lighting, which created a great atmosphere for the class. It's a bit pricey for a drop-in, around $40 - but definitely worth it for such a great workout. One of my favorite ever workout experiences in the city!!! I've had a few hot yoga experiences (CorePower, Body Temp) and was expecting the same when I signed up for a hot pilates class through Classpass. First, the studio. This is the most unique yoga class I've ever experienced, and I'd compare the lighting, the music, the atmosphere to a nightclub of sorts. The space is huge (but also fills up quickly), the lighting changes with the mood and intensity of the workout, AND switched on beat with the music?! If you weren't already pumped, you've got to be now! Second, the instructor and the class itself were AMAZING. I have never felt this hyped and energized, and TIRED but so motivated all at once! The hot pilates combination of weighted arms and core, and legs were enough for me to fulfill my exercise quota for the whole week. Come here for an amazing experience!! I've been taking classes at Funky Door for about a month now (I signed up for the AMAZING deal of $99 for 2 months of unlimited classes) and I freaking love it here! Every class leaves me feeling strong, confident, and more connected to my body. The environment/community as a whole is warm, friendly, and welcoming. I didn't have much experience with yoga or pilates before starting classes at Funky Door, but the positive energy from both students and teachers made me feel safe to try something new. All of the teachers strike a really great balance of pushing you to your maximum ability while also being supportive, encouraging, and compassionate. Every time I've approached a teacher with a question after class, they take the time to give a thorough answer and I can see that they genuinely care about helping me improve. The space is also super clean (even with all the sweat that pours in the classes!). The instructors here know there stuff and are quite compassionate. I have a long-standing injury to my left knee and I talked with the instructor before the class. Throughout the class the instructor came over and showed me how to modify the exercises accordingly. I love the personal treatment. This place is clean and well-equipped. Lots of props. Funky Door is AMAZING! This place has changed my life and how I feel about myself. In a number of months, it has helped me to truly transform the relationship I have with myself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I started attending in July 2024, and within the first month, I saw noticeable results. This kept me coming back for Side note: I've always struggled with maintaining a consistent workout routine Yet, the changes I experienced in my energy levels and mood gave me the motivation to stick with it. At first, I committed to attending 2-3 times a week and made a commitment to hit that goal no matter what. Over time, I increased my attendance and built up stamina and strength, which has made the workouts even more rewarding. The first few classes were the most challenging. And the staff and group moral picked me up. During the holiday months (October through December), they offer a "Hot Room Challenge," and I've committed to attending five classes a week. I love this challenge because it helps me stay focused during a time that can often be stressful. It keeps me from worrying about things like: * Did I exercise enough today? * Will this extra serving of mashed potatoes affect my progress? * Will I have enough energy for weekend plans? This place is an absolute nightmare. I recently bought a membership, and I am sure I've been scammed. During a workout, while I was squatting with weights, the owner came up(she was also in the class), took the weights out of my hands, and loudly yelled in front of everyone, "This is not a weighted class!" And she walked away with my weight. I was completely mortified. After the class, she came to me with an attitude, saying, "I'm the owner of this place, you're not supposed to use weights because it didn't say it's a weighted class." I've been going to hot yoga for 15+ years, In every yoga studio I've been to, weights are optional, and no one would ever treat a paid customer like that. The owner clearly doesn't care about her clients, only her ego. She is rude, unprofessional, and extremely humiliating. I've took Ry's class one time, it was a total chaos, the worst yoga I've ever practiced my whole life. The studio itself is dirty and smells awful, and the classes are boring and extremely repetitive, you can clearly feel the struggle with all of their instructors. (I don't think the owner treats them well either.) This place is a total waste of money, and the owner's behavior is beyond disrespectful. Save your time, money, and sanity -- do NOT come here! read more

They've cultivated a fun, supportive, and welcoming community vibe here... and their classes are ALL top-notch. I regularly do Hot Pilates (45 and 60 min versions), Yoga & Mix Tapes, and Yoga with a Twist (a special class led by the legendary Jeff Renfro, a true gem, who breaks down poses and helps you progress and do things you never thought possible). I'm a yoga newbie and this was my first time doing hot yoga, so it was pretty intense for me. Ry was the instructor and she did a great job leading and giving instructions. She was very friendly and encouraging. Thankfully there were a lot of breaks to wipe off sweat and drink water. I'll have to bring more next time. Make sure to bring a large water bottle, mat, and a towel big enough for the mat. They provide hand towels. They have locks you can borrow. I didn't try the locker room or shower. I'm interested in doing more classes and trying the DJ set. That sounds fun. There were two small dogs in case you're allergic. For me, that's a bonus. I've been going to Funky Door Berkeley + SF for over 7 years now. The new San Francisco location is amazing--very fun, challenging classes (hot pilates, Bikram yoga, Bikyasa). They will definitely calm your mind and sculpt your body. And everything is new and clean! I also really appreciate the instructors' different styles, musical choices, and their offering modifications. I've had spinal fusion surgery and never feel like I MUST do everything. I came in today for Pilates after a few weeks break because I had an arm injury. The arm injury is pretty obvious on my body (I have bruising from body work I had done recently to be able to work out again) towards the end of the class I took a break from the push ups as I felt a tense strain on my arm and I decided to sit back for a few minutes and wait for the push up rounds to end before reengaging with the class instructions. I checked my phone during my arm break because I got a text from a family member and wanted to let them know I was not available and I would call them back soon. Within less than a minute the instructor of the class tried to put me on spot and said loudly on his whole mic something like "you better be using the calculator app to count your push ups". He was clearly trying to embarrass me while taking a break. Looking at my phone for a minute while I'm letting my muscles rest a bit more really isn't disruptive to anyone and this class is blasting rave music and strobe lights so it's not a "meditative" space by any means. I dont think its appropriate that the instructor gets agitated in this way. I could have gotten up and gone into the hall for the arm break, but the last time I did that at this specific studio the front desk person immediately came up to me to talk about why I walked out of the class and I wasn't interested in explaining that I had arm injury again. read more
