The room/space was adorable with a full kitchen, bathroom, and good amount of seating (think well designed studio apartment). There is a coffee shop located in the main floor below the hotel and also- Red Bench is like 3 doors down. The Grand Stay is a smallish midwestern chain and there happened to be on in town so I grabbed a room for a few nights Small but nice lobby greets you as you walk in and the attentive fellow behind the desk got me squared away with a room in short order. I was up on the third floor so hopped the elevators and headed up. Elevator arrived and operated in the normal amount of time - so all good. Room was nicely appointed and clean. Bathroom was good sized, well lit and functional. Hot water was hot. There is a large indoor pool available, but I did not have the time to do anything there. They offer a free breakfast in the morning but to be honest, it was very basic. Coffee was decent however. The building is situated on the edge of a strip mall and there is an Italian sports bar there if you feel the need to grab something to eat and watch the game. Parking lot was a bit small and cramped, but got the job done. Overall a solid 3-star hotel and I would stay here again if in the area.

I will say most of the B & B's I've enjoyed, was partially because we had a chance to get to know the owners a bit and see how passionate they were about making a great B & B experience for everyone who stayed with them. So, maybe I've just been spoiled a bit by the extent of the services and amenities others offer, but that's my comparison. What this place does have going for it, is it's location. However depending on where your room is, you'll hear the traffic noise as this is located on a busy street. Also, the fact that there isn't really much else around lodging accommodations limits your choices for this area. There is private parking for guests. The room was clean and comfortable. It was lacking the extra little touches that many travelers have come to appreciate from bed & breakfast operators-shampoo, blower dryer, complementary water or soda, glassware or plasticware instead of dixie cups in the room. Self service coffee, tea and microwave popcorn was available in the dining area. For the price of the rooms, the little extra touches might have helped.

But hey, our hosts were relaxed and friendly, and the folks we sat down with to breakfast had fun stories to tell. The rooms are idiosyncratic but charming. The bathrooms: just idiosyncratic, but they worked. Breakfasts on the weekends were more elaborate and tasty, and on weekdays simpler but adequate. I get the feeling this may vary with the number of guests. The Birdhouse is on a "busy" intersection which is no big deal because Excelsior is a pretty quiet little town; and a charming one. You are a walk away from good shops and restaurants. You are a very short walk from Lake Minnetonka and its activities. The Porch and grounds are delightful. If you get the right weather for it, lazing outside could be a delicious experience, with an elevated view of the neighborhood. Of course, getting bearable weather (not too many mosquitoes, not too much heat and humidity, not 5 degrees below zero, can take scheduling and luck. In the winter, I imagine the large parlor would be very inviting. So a point off for the various weird bathrooms, which were all functional but awkward, but all in all, I will be staying there again, the next time I visit relatives.

The gym only had a peloton bike- no recumbent bike. It had 3 treadmills. One didn't incline and one the TV didn't work. The elliptical handles were damaged a bit. I really missed the recumbent bike. Breakfast was nice. Good assortment and always neat and clean despite it being a buffet. Cookies out in the afternoon- yum! Easy parking- lots of spaces near door for Diamond members.

The gym access is 24/7 which is really nice. The complimentary breakfast is what I expected, and is pretty much the same across most Hampton Inns. It's a great amenity! Checkout was no problem at all. I'd gladly stay here again.

Champagne upon arrival, champagne in our room very attentive staff etc. they do however have complimentary bike rentals which was a very fun surprise, we took a little stroll around, it's great being near so many restaurants walking distance. There was also a shuttle driver so that was a great addition. Our room service however took over 50 minutes to arrive.. we didn't get waters which I feel is a typical thing to provide with room service and my coffee arrived cold. we wanted late check out , they offered an additional hour and if we wanted any longer than that it would be an additional $75. No thank you. I too feel very out of place here in wayzata, so I don't know if it's a town I'd keep on my radar for future stays.

Bedbugs. My biggest travel fear…read more And that fear was realized during my stay at this hotel. I was originally placed in a (very nice) 5th floor room, but due to the excessive noise going on above me (a common problem that I experience at every Courtyard by Marriott property I visit), I asked to have my room changed to a top floor room. Huge mistake. I woke up in the middle of the night to use the restroom. I returned to my bed, turned off the light, and not long afterwards I saw something run just inches past my face. I turned on the light, hopped out of the bed, and right away I knew what it was. I took some photos of it as I dialed the front desk so that someone from the hotel could come to my room and see it for themselves. I must have tried them for 15-20 minutes, but no one at the front desk answered. Finally, I killed the bug (preserving the sample for Pest Control) and went down to the front desk. Of all of the hotels I've ever stayed at in my life, I have never been greeted by an empty front desk. Ever. I waited around for a few minutes, then walked to the back offices to see if anyone was there, but it was a ghost town. Not a soul to be found. This hotel is connected by a breezeway to another Marriott property so I walked over to that property and found the guy who's supposed to be at the front desk of my hotel chit-chatting with the front desk staff of the adjoining Marriott property. I asked the three of them if there was a manager available. The guy, Kent, tells me that he's sort of like a manager. I tell him my issue and all of a sudden he's not feeling so managerial. Amanda, the night manager of the adjoining Marriott property, offered to help me. I proceeded to explain to her my issue as we walked to my room and she jumped right into action. She procured a robe, some garbage bags, some antibacterial wipes, and some coins for the washing machine and we spent the next few hours washing every article of my clothing, and using the antibacterial wipes to sanitize every single item that I brought with me on this trip. No task was too small or too neurotic, and she never once complained. I wondered aloud what I would do about clothes in the meantime. She informed me that she was authorized to drive the Hotel shuttle, and she took me to a nearby Target as soon as it opened. Not long after I returned, I asked to speak with the hotel's management about the issue. I met with Andrea and was hit with the "we can neither confirm nor deny" bullshit. Fine. They brought Pest Control in later that morning (including a canine trained to sniff out bedbugs) to inspect not only my room, but also all of my belongings. Pest Control confirmed that not only was the insect that I killed a bed bug, but they also found the presence of bed bugs among the clothes that Amanda and I had cleaned just a few hours earlier. At that point, I decided that I was not bringing any of those items home with me. Despite the hotel's offer to heat treat my belongings, even the most infinitesimal risk of bringing this pestilence back with me was unacceptable. Moreover, some of my items would be warped and otherwise ruined after being exposed to such high heat for a prolonged period. Fortunately, I always travel with a Sleep Sack (Google it. It's a worthwhile investment for any traveler) so I was not bitten or otherwise physically injured, and the hotel's insurance company ultimately reimbursed me for my losses. However, I hope other travelers never have to go through such a traumatic and otherwise frustrating experience.
