Review of shorebird 55 (Let me begin by saying that this review was submitted to At the Dunes rental agency but never posted on their site.) Pros: *excellent beach access * lovely ocean view Cons: *furniture, towels, sheets in generally rundown condition *master bedroom has 1 bedside table and 1 lamp. I ended bringing in a small corroded outdoor iron table and moving a lamp from the second bedroom. * one floor lamp in the entire living room. Generally poor lighting. *Peeling paint in bathroom *mold in bathroom corners *uncomfortable living room furniture-outdoor wicker, way past it's comfort usage. No support. *unwashed sheets in second bedroom, unwashed towel in master bath. ( the rental agency was very responsive about this) In this time of Covid, these discoveries made our stay uncomfortable. Was this place really sanitized before our arrival? My point here is that a rental at the beach, for $400+/ night, should be comfortable in all aspects. This was not. For a total of $1800 for four nights, I would have expected much more. read more

Is this someone's negected bequest? Pajaro Dunes Shorebirds #115 review (through VRBO) We love Pajaro Dunes and have fond memories of our friends' lovely condo. This one in comparison--meh! Would definitely not stay there again. The property was clean enough but not stocked with minimal kitchen staples (like flour, cooking oil, aluminum foil). With VRBO you expect better. The patio furniture was so torn, cracked and ripped, our adult daughter had a huge blood blister after sitting on a green plastic chair. (See photos) This is not acceptable. Nor is the master bathroom door where you had to close the door completely in order to use the toilet. It was so cramped--and I'm only 5'1. Do not stay here if you are used to comfort, cooking, or a patio where you can sit out and see the sky. For $2000 for three nights, we expected a lot more than Shorebird #115. read more

Been coming here for quick getaways for more than twenty years. My parents became condo owners here perhaps a decade ago, and so I've seen how the rentals work from both sides - as a guest and as a owner. I won't talk about their rental since that seems too obvious a conflict of interest, but I would like to say that Pajaro Dunes is a very nice place to stay and recharge. Only about an hour's drive from San Jose, you can be away from the hustle and bustle in a matter of minutes. Parking is plentiful. They have carts you can use to haul your gear up to the residences. The dunes around the buildings are always kept up well and attractive. All of the rentals are just steps away from the beach and I believe all have balconies where you can lounge from the comfort of your place if you choose. Each rental offers different amenities; personally, I'd go for one with a jacuzzi, but that's just me! There's no need to venture anywhere when you're here (assuming you brought your food with you)... but Monterey is a short drive away and of course nice to explore. A great place to unwind! One of my good friends had a house at Pajaro Dunes when we were younger, but her family sold it a few years ago. To re-live the glory years, my friends and I rented a house at Pajaro Dunes for the weekend. Overall, we were disappointed with the service we received at the rental office. We didn't receive the right instructions to get the key (we ended up having to go to two different rental offices), and they didn't provide us with any instructions on how to get to the house we rented. Even though we are familiar with the area, the different parking lots and ways to get to the houses can be confusing, so more direction would have been nice (we also probably should have asked). Excluding the generic paper products (kleenex and paper towels), our rental house (#117) was great. We had a beautiful view of the ocean, and the kitchen and shared space was really nice. There were TVs (many of them flat screen!) in every bedroom too. The house was built vertically, so that there were two "rooms" on each floor and three floors; that made for a lot of stair climbing...but that might have been needed given how lazy we were being all weekend. :-) The kitchen was well-stocked with all of the utensils, dishes and cookware we could've wanted. The house could technically sleep 13 (there were only 5 of us); we definitely didn't use a lot of the space in the house, but I think 13 would be pushing it (especially with two bathrooms). The facilities are generally nice - lots of great tennis courts. Though, one negative was that there was a dead seal/sea lion on the beach in the area close to where we were; it had clearly been there for days (weeks?) and created a really unpleasant smell. I would have thought that somebody would have it removed.... read more

My husband and I recently stayed here for five days in a friend's beach house. Beautiful! Relaxing! Serene! It was the best vacation I have ever had. The beach for these houses are "private" in a sense because the only other people you will see are the only other people staying in the houses. The beach is about 1 1/2 miles from the "public" beach. If you are a pie lover, you must go to Gitzrich (sp?) Farm and try their fresh apple pies, juice, and apples. This place is about 10 minutes away from Santa Cruz and Capitola. We couldn't have asked for a more home feeling house! We talked on the beach, collected seashells, and loads & loads of sand dollars. We also had a nice bonfire late afternoon because we wanted to enjoy the water and beach in daylight. The beach is pretty private. I don't have any negative feedback about our house. If you have ever dreamed of staying right next to the beach, this is the perfect place. At night you get a beautiful view of the lights shinning across the Monterey Bay from Santa Cruz. The stars are another spectacular vision. Perfect for strolls & swimming all within a walk away. We stayed in S86, very cozy, feels like you are at home. The owners put personal touches to every room. There are two bedrooms, the main has the best view of the ocean, the guest is geared for the "kids room." However it can be used by us grown-ups too! I love how the place is fully stocked with utensils and a washer and dryer! read more

We have been coming to Pajaro Dunes for our church's small retreats for a few years now. Accomodations are always nice, and there's a spacious meeting space for rent if so needed. The houses are located a stone's throw from the beach, so that's always nice for a walk. On our most recent stay, there was a power outage - a PG&E transformer had blown. There wasn't much the management could do - but they went out and purchased a gas generator for us. Very thoughtful and very much appreciated. We hope to continue coming back here for many years to come. read more

I like its well guarded and private here so it's quiet and relaxing. Stayed in a nice beach home and the views are nice. Beach is clean and uncrowded. Water is freezing so it's helpful to wear a wetsuit which I don't own. Not a place as a tourist destination but great for a private retreat from stress. read more

I have been going here for decades. A fantastic place to celebrate times with friends or family... houses are pricey, but a lot of rooms and sleeping options. It is in Watsonville about 35 minutes south of SC, 15 minutes north of Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing. These houses are, for the most part, RIGHT ON THE BEACH... or within a 30 second walk. Awesome place to go and relax.... slow things down... and simply enjoy watching a sunset while cooking a meal with those you love the most. read more

Pajaro Dunes is a pretty awesome beach . . . one of the nicest beaches I've visited in northern California. It had everything we were looking for . . . for our weekend at the beach. We visited in mid-August . . . and experienced wonderful long walks in sweatshirts in the morning fog . . . clearing to bright sunny skies in the afternoon . . . and s'mores from the fire pit on the beach after dark. Perhaps because it is such a long beach, it was less crowded than expected, which was very nice. It was a family-friendly place to come . . . Maybe take this with a grain of salt (better than a grain of sand at any rate), as I haven't been here in about 15 years, at a time when I could absolutely not afford let alone legally rent a condo on my own. But no, all these years later, this place still sticks with me, and all the memories of brief vacations to beach with my mom, brother and grandmother. Someone here quipped about the whole beach house from the 80s vibe - this assuredly is a feature and not a bug. Stay at some other condo if you want something more contemporary, this place isn't (least wasn't) about that, and it's grand. Perserved marlins and sailfish hang from the walls, ladder access lofts and decks that overlook the ocean that will rock you to sleep. Worn wood paneling covers every building, staircase and sign, sand, sand and more sand, sunny days and overcast skies. I may not be back again soon, but inevitably, I'll be returning here. read more

There are two companies that do vacation rentals and events at the Pajaro Dunes community: the Pajaro Dunes Company and At the Dunes. The two companies are frequently confused so if you are looking to book a vacation home or event, make sure that you know which company you are dealing with and that your guests do as well. Unfortunately we had a very poor experience with At the Dunes. It boils down to this: the Event Manager did not show up the day of the wedding. Judy was our Event Manager and although she is very, very pleasant to deal with, through the planning process we had a real problem getting her to respond to our calls. Many of our guests ended up booking their vacation homes through the other company because they could not get a return call. On the day of the wedding, my mother-in-law, (who was acting as our day-of coordinator), called the office to find out when the doors to the venue (the Lagoon House) would be opened. The person who answered the phone seemed to have no idea that there was a wedding that day (although At the Dunes staff had set up tables and chairs the day before). She was told that Judy wasn't there, and was in fact on vacation. We had absolutely no idea, having communicated with her as recently as three days before. The person at the office said they would "make some calls" and then called back with a name and number that we could call "if we had problems." Well, we had problems. Including the extension cords for the speakers on the beach not working, there being no toilet paper, soap or hand towels in the bathrooms, doors that were supposed to be open were locked... I could go on. With the timely help of some our dedicated and creative friends family, as well as our upbeat and experienced caterer, there were no major disasters. I wouldn't necessarily discourage people from planning an event at Pajaro Dunes, nor would I even say you shouldn't book it through At the Dunes (it's a great value). But assume you are paying for the venue ONLY and have a back-up plan for making sure the event goes smoothly. The beach here at Pajaro Dunes easily has the smoothest sand I've ever seen. Came here a couple of times during my stay in one of the beach houses that border this beach. The beach is definitely the highlight of my stay. There is almost nobody on the beach, which is surprising, gives it a very serene feeling. Just sit back with a book or lay down and tan, this place is perfect for that! Can't say too much about the beach houses here, I stayed at Pelican Point and wrote a separate review for that property. What's really cool about this beach is that there is Wi-FI here, which blows me away since there wasn't even Wi-Fi inside the actual place I stayed at. Pretty cool. Gorgeous place to view the sunrise or sunset. Gets cold in the day time with the breeze, but I went during December so it'll probably be nicer in the spring and summer. Gorgeous beach overall. It's one of those ideal beaches where you'd wanna take those "long walks on the beach." read more

We enjoyed a long rainy weekend here and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. We rented a second floor condo at Pelican Point and were extremely pleased with the accommodations and location. It was a last minute plan and luckily there was availability. Location is everything and this place gets 5+ stars. It was a dream. Waking up to watch the sunrise even with the dark storm clouds was such a treat! I would go back anytime. In fact, we are hoping to get a big group together to rent one of the all glass 6 bedroom homes with beach access from the house. I recommend this place to anyone and for those coming from San Francisco, you must take Highway 1, what a beautiful coastline, I cannot say it enough! read more

We really enjoyed our stay here in the private community of Pajaro Dunes. It's a nice, secluded subdivision of Watsonville, just outside of Monterey and Carmel (and Watsonville and Santa Cruz) that was likely once a much sought after destination, but now has become a quaint little community of older owners and younger renters. It's not too big, though, and the fact that it is a private community and secluded and its not-so-central location means that its pretty much just going to be quiet, private, and as much fun as you want to make it. For us, our house was not on the beach, but was instead just a few hundred feet. We were right next to the beach access stairs, so we had a quick straight shot to the sand. The water was cold, and sometimes the wind blew a bit chilly, especially for the kids, especially in early June, but the sunset was always gorgeous, whether viewed from the top of the stairs, down at water's edge, or from our beautiful bay-view style windows in our house. Houses here are pretty much fully furnished, or at least ours was, with cable TV, high speed internet, a few bedrooms and baths, grills, and kitchen amenities. There is local grocery shopping and farmer's markets, which made it perfect for coming home and making meals for our extended family. Its location made it is easy for us to pack up and hit Monterey Aquarium, Gizdich Ranch, Dennis the Menace Park and the Monterey Farmer's Market. But most days, we hit the beach in the afternoon, and watched the sunset at night, and then played cards or watched TV into the late evening. Just what a perfect vacation for a young family is all about! So, that being said, if you are older, a group of church friends, scrapbookers, or a knitting circle, perhaps this would be a nice getaway. If you are a young 20something looking to get wasted and party ala Jersey Shore, you probbbbbbably don't want to hit Pajaro Dunes. But, overall, I enjoyed it, and would come back to relax and reflect and reset and forget reality. I won't come back to do extended days on the beach / in the water, or party like a rockstar. read more

As a Caterer I deal with many venues but none can compare to At the Dunes Vacation Rentals especially for weddings. There are 3 halls to choose from all of which are very beautiful yet still affordable! They all already have tables and chairs at each location. Also the private beach is a 5 min walk from each Hall so if you're looking to have a beach wedding I would highly recommend this venue. Best of all Judy is the wedding coordinator who is always going the extra mile to make sure everything goes smoothly! I've done dozens of weddings at this venue and have never had any problems working with Judy. I don't know of a more peaceful vacation spot by the beach on the Central Coast. I live in Hollister and it's amazing to find a place to go for the weekend that feels like you traveled far and wide to feel like you've gotten away. The service was excellent when booking my trip - very personable! The condo I rented is really clean and has the perfect warm ambiance I needed to relax, rejuvenate and self-reflect. We booked through Airbnb. We stayed in #72 Puffin Lane right on the beach. From a 1-10 I give the views & location a 10. The staff At The Dunes Building 3 a 10+. The house felt like it needed a good cleaning, the linens needed to be updated & thrown away ( or donated). The furniture had some rips & holes. The fireplace wasn't working or the stove. They actually gave us a 150$ food credit & replaced the stove the next day. They say it sleeps 9-10 but here is where the review goes downhill. This house sleeps 2 couples & the rest of the bunkbeds & the pullout couch sleeps children under 120lbs. The pullout couch in the master bedroom should be thrown out ASAP, the springs were broken in the front with a mattress the size of a wheat thin. Upstairs I slept on the bottom bunk where my face & feet were about 6 inches from the top bunk. I would highly recommend this house if you have 2 couples & 4 children. We were 4 moms & 6 kids. The pullout couch shouldn't even be listed as a bed option, very disappointing. The location & views were great but for sleeping it was a nightmare. read more

I love the beach and this place is Heaven to me. The Lord's amazing handiwork is so present here. This place is beautiful!!! This is my fourth time here and it gets better for me each time. We tended house 42. A few minor things were let working in the house, but the view was absolutely breathtaking!!! Big windows looking out to the beach with a hot tub on the back balcony. It gets windy here, but that's ok. Our young kids were still able to play on the beach and they had fun too. I can't wait to come back!! read more

This resort is extremely rude to guests visiting family who have rented a unit. My wife and I went to visit my parents with our dog, which is a registered service animal. We were staying in a different hotel, rather than stay at this resort again, because we have had issues with their poor customer service in the past. In fact, the last time we had an issue and posted on Yelp, they contacted my wife and threatened her, implying her negative Yelp review could be a crime--just because she said the place was a "ripoff." The gate attendant told us that we would be cited for bringing "any animal" on the property, even though I explained the dog would stay in the car and not enter the unit. When I indicated, after their frosty warning we would still likely be cited, that our dog was a service animal, and I would be checking with At the Dunes whether it was their policy to deny entry to service animals, they backpedaled and said service animals were allowed in some units, but that I "could be cited anyway." Conclusion: if you're visiting Watsonville, I'd recommend staying at the Hampton instead. There might not be an ocean view, but at least they do not break the law and ban service animals. read more

My daughter and I stayed in a 2 bedroom condo in a gated community. The condo was very clean and a nice. It had a tv in the kids room as well as the living room. There was a fire place with wood available. The condo was stocked with all the essential kitchen items one may need. Each building has access to the private beach. The weather was always overcast so don't plan on sun bathing there. This place is a short drive to Santa Cruz where there is sun if you want to lay out. The beach was beautiful with sand dollars and shells in the sand. The one thing I didn't like was there weren't a lot of food options close by. There were a few places that delivered to the condos though. Overall a good place to stay. read more

I love Pajaro Dunes. It's the perfect destination for a quiet weekend for Bay Area folks, as it's just 45 minutes from Los Gatos. The condos are nestled in the dunes so you couldn't be closer to the beach and ocean. The beach is wide and clean and beautiful and quiet (except for the 4th of July). The views from the condos are great - there's a very good chance that you'll see dolphins, otters, whales or seals if you sit patiently with your binoculars. But, even still, my 3-year-old prefers all the small plane sightings. He gets spoiled here because the Watsoville airport is so close. The non-beach amenities here include a small bike/walking path, a basketball court (that we also use for hockey), a very small gym, tennis court and duck pond where the best-fed ducks in the world live. There's a small shed with one soda vending machine and two newspaper boxes (The Chronicle and Mercury News), that you have to get out of bed pretty early to obtain a paper from, if you are there in the summer. btw - they allow bonfires on the beach as long as you are a good distance from the dunes and you build your fire in some kind of metal container (bbq top or portable bbq, for example). read more

Today, it remains a beautiful, relaxing and reminiscent visit each time. The staff has always been nice to work with and there is plenty going on in the town of Watsonville for those who want it. This is one of those places where you pay a fortune...but are rewarded with a world-class beach house experience....at least that was how it was for us. My wife and a friend and I stayed at House 95 for 3 nights in Mid September and have absolutely no complaints. The house was well furnished, the view (being an ocean front house) was beyond amazing and the weather was absolutely perfect. Whether it was watching groups of pelicans flying in formation just inches above the surf or dolphins playing in the waves or otters (seals?) floating around, you can not ask for a more serene place to unwind. It cracks me up that people complain about cell service or wifi...the whole point of being there is to get away from all that (and you pay a pretty penny for the opportunity)! Sure, cell service was spotty at best but the wifi (at least where we were) was just fine for checking out places to eat and the like. While you can pay them to provide bon fire materials, it is crazy expensive compared to stopping at Safeway (2 miles away) and picking up your own wood and smores fixin's....which we did. There were a few metal bowls (think "weber BBQ top") already on the beach so we didn't have to use the one we had brought. We set the fire....toasted the marshmallows...ate the smores....and enjoyed the moonlight, stars and a dozen or so of those floating lanterns that folks in a nearby house had lit and set to the wind to sail off over the ocean until they could no longer be seen.....talk about relaxing! Again...the price is steep, even with a free night after paying for 2 it ran about $500/night after all was said and done. Their damage "deposit" is basically you paying insurance in case you break something....it's not refunded but does provide some peace of mind..just in case. We've stayed at Irish Beach near Mendocino for years and years but think this is going to be our new "go to" retreat when we need to get away from it all.....I just need to start saving up for it now :-) read more

The beach is really nice, and not crowded, since it's a little out of the way. This is a perfect location for a family vacation because it's just close enough to Monterey and Santa Cruz, so there's something for everyone to enjoy. read more

My grandparents have owned a condo here for 25 years and my family goes there all the time. It's not far from Santa Cruz or Carmel and Monterrey is about 45 minutes south of there. In the summer it gets very crowded. Personally, I like to go in the fall. The weather is still pretty decent and it's not as crowded. It gets VERY windy there so even if you're going in the summer, take a light jacket. read more

Stayed here a few years ago & it was unforgettable. The beach is just the most perfect walking beach with firmly packed sand. Found lots of sand dollars. The dunes are also very beautiful with all the sand grass. Staying on the first floor means that your views are blocked by the dunes - which isn't so bad. But if you want ocean views, third floor is best. Great access no matter where your unit is. I recall a pond nearby where my kids chased & fed ducks... It was a great stay. If you need to go to Monterey, beware that the distance isn't great but there is quite a bit of traffic both ways. read more

I love, love, love spending time at Pajaro Dunes. I've been coming here with my family since I was a kid. Usually we stay in a Shorebirds unit but we have also rented a house before. Occasionally we have had some problems with the units we are renting and have to get the rental agency to do some maintenance on the plumbing. This can be annoying but honestly it usually can't rain on my parade while staying here. If I could afford it I would love to own a vacation property here. Right on the ocean, tennis courts, privacy. Amazing location, but otherwise really expensive for what you get. We were charged $2000 for five nights in a 2Br 2Ba condo on the 3rd floor (the floor with the best view). For that money, most anywhere else in the world, you get what we got plus large HD flat screen TVs, cell phone reflectors, iPod cradle, euro-style bathrooms with modern toilets, high-end memory foam beds, elevators, daily maid service, swimming pools, bars and restaurants. But hey, at least we got a VHS player. To their credit, the Wifi service was nice and solid. If you are into cooking, bring your own knives and cutting board. The cuttings boards at this place were GLASS, for pity's sake. read more

If it were possible for me to rate with fewer stars, I most definitely would. I'm writing this because no one should wake up during their Fourth of July vacation with a feeling of discouragement and hatred. After arriving at the Dunes with no clear instructions and horribly marked houses, I received a fine for accidentally parking in the driveway of a vacant home. While trying to settle the dispute, I was told that my group was warned many times to move our cars and that the utmost effort was made to inform us of our wronged parking jobs. First, we were put on hold for 6 minutes so we hung up because of the ridiculous wait. They called again so two of our group members moved; however, I was at the beach. Immediately, when I returned, I moved my car to find a $50 ticket. When trying to sort this out, I was led in circles. The front desk of the rental agency was informal and useless, calling me "dude" and telling me they couldn't do anything. Next, I tried explaining my case to the "agency" that runs security and the gates. After being hung up on and lied to, I went to speak in person to those at the gate. I was met with sass, disrespect, and ignorance by the woman at the front desk and the security guard. I was informed that the ticket was truly supposed to be $25, yet I was charged $50. This place is pretty awesome. I havent been here since I was a kid, but I remember pelicans flying by 5 feet from my window. We went to Gizdich Ranch and picked berries then came back and frolicked on the beach. we probably collected over 30 sand dollars each, it was a little excessive. I would love to go back. read more

WOW! What can I say? Awesome! Relaxing! Beautiful! Serene! Pajaro Dunes is magnificient! Just returned from my first trip but definitely will not be my last. The ride from The Bay Area to The Dunes is a great winding rush. The views are incedible. The serenity of the location was so muh appreciated and the houses were fabulous. My early morning strolls along the beach were so peaceful and envigorating. Gorgeous views from every window in our house. Lovely....I highly recommend to everyone to visit The Dunes! read more
