If, on the other hand, the staff and location are primary then this is a winner. We stayed at the Pine Acres Lodge for a week. Most of the week it was only two people and then the last couple days another couple joined us. The staff was fantastic. They were friendly and helpful. We arrived very early on our day of arrival and they were able to accommodate us immediately. They were cheerful and helpful as they did so. Each time we had interactions with them it was very pleasant. The location is great. It is probably 2 1/2 blocks from some super ocean views. A short walk or minuscule drive rewarded you with incredible sunsets and Asilomar State Beach. You are a block of two from one of the best golf values on the peninsula at Pacific Grove Golf Links . The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is an easy walk or about a one minute drive. It is well under 3-4 minutes to downtown Pacific Grove for restaurants, coffee, gas, shopping, etc. It is probably 10 minutes to the Monterey Aquarium and Cannery Row. The units are not new, large, nor are they luxurious. We were in a 1BR cottage with a Murphy bed. The kitchen was well stocked but, again, not new and not large. We were gone much of the time but always cooked breakfast and a few dinners without any issues. Four people fit in this unit without issues. Since the outside was so nice we found the accommodations very acceptable. We liked the Pine Acres Lodge and hope to return again.

The…read moreplace is pet friendly and has all the comforts of home - including washer and dryer and bicycles. Barry Behrens-Nagle, the owner, lives next door, and is is a very responsive landlord when questions need answering or something isn't working right. The cottage is located very close to Monterey Bay and is within walking distance of Cannery Row, Pacific Grove Golf Links and lots of other fun places. We'll be back!

We stayed at the Capitola Sea Winds location…read more We loved the location in that we could step out the door and literally in just a few steps be on the main street. We love being able to walk around when we travel - without having to get into the car and drive someplace. This was perfect for that. We would actually get out and walk a couple to several times a day - whether just to walk or to go to eat. The beach is also within easy walking distance - so nice! You can just walk all sorts of directions and see many different things. The vacation rental was super clean! We've stayed in a number in both California and Oregon. We had some Wi-Fi problems, and in that we must bring our "office" (computers) with us - being able to have wi-fi is essential. When we called the agency. they responded promptly to our call. The kitchen is well supplied with dishes, utensils, etc. The bathroom was also sparkling clean. The tub is VERY, VERY slippery - I take a tub bath and even my husband, who takes a shower, said he felt very unsafe as it was so slippery; there are no "grip strips" of any kind. If we were to return to this rental, we'd definitely bring our own bath mat for safety. There is a porch quite a distance around the unit - we didn't use it - personal preference, but . . in nice warm weather, it would be nice. It was nice to have a garage in which to park the car. 4 stars instead of 5 for several reasons: in all our stays at vacation rentals, we've never been asked to strip the beds and start the laundry, and if I remember correctly, we were to have dishes done before checkout. (I don't remember the check out time, but . . if we'd done all they asked, our last AM there WOULD NOT have been leisurely!) We didn't have the dishes done - but they were in the dishwasher being washed. Also - out security deposit ($500.) was NOT returned in the time frame in which they said it would be in the contract we had to sign. It was at least 6 weeks before it was credited back to us; that's quite a big chunk of our money for them to have for that extended time. And . . .we had to call them to check on it when it wasn't credited and it was huge process for them to find out what the problem was.

Pros: *excellent beach access * lovely ocean view Cons: *furniture, towels, sheets in generally rundown condition *master bedroom has 1 bedside table and 1 lamp. I ended bringing in a small corroded outdoor iron table and moving a lamp from the second bedroom. * one floor lamp in the entire living room. Generally poor lighting. *Peeling paint in bathroom *mold in bathroom corners *uncomfortable living room furniture-outdoor wicker, way past it's comfort usage. No support. *unwashed sheets in second bedroom, unwashed towel in master bath. ( the rental agency was very responsive about this) In this time of Covid, these discoveries made our stay uncomfortable. Was this place really sanitized before our arrival? My point here is that a rental at the beach, for $400+/ night, should be comfortable in all aspects. This was not. For a total of $1800 for four nights, I would have expected much more.

Would definitely not stay there again. The property was clean enough but not stocked with minimal kitchen staples (like flour, cooking oil, aluminum foil). With VRBO you expect better. The patio furniture was so torn, cracked and ripped, our adult daughter had a huge blood blister after sitting on a green plastic chair. (See photos) This is not acceptable. Nor is the master bathroom door where you had to close the door completely in order to use the toilet. It was so cramped--and I'm only 5'1. Do not stay here if you are used to comfort, cooking, or a patio where you can sit out and see the sky. For $2000 for three nights, we expected a lot more than Shorebird #115.

Local Bay Area Getaway!…read more I recently found out about this spot during my friend's bachelor party. It's a very secluded neighborhood with a security gate for entrance. The unit they rented was had 4 spacious room. Upon entering, the first thing I noticed were these huge windows overlooking the Salinas River State Beach. I could not believe the view. The window view literally felt like I was staring at a Computer Screen Saver off a 8 feet x 4 feet monitor. It was amazing. It was September, so the weather was a good 55 at the lowest and 77 at the highest with a constant sea breeze air hitting my face. The best part of this place is getting up to the sounds of the waves gently crashing to the shore. I definitely have to come back and share this place with the fam. I know they'll love they'll love this little escape as much as I did.

We stayed in the newer Boathouse, in the Castaway Room on the right end, ground floor. The privacy and quiet were fantastic! The couples shower feels amazing and overlooks the river. We saw lots of birds and a gorgeous sunset and sunrise colors. Nature sounds enveloped us, as well as the sage fragrance of the garden. The bed was super comfortable, good support, and new. The center room looked like it had slightly more view and the bed was lower to the floor. Being on the end gave us more privacy and zero noises from other rooms. We liked being higher off the ground because we could see a little farther from there. The caretakers came on site to take care of the gardens and kitchen and checked in with us to make sure our stay was flawless. The main building is an old historic building and garden so expect quaint and period details. The nautical artifacts were amazing. There is a fantastic coffee shop called The Power Plant 5 minutes away for coffee, smoothies, avocado toast, beer and snacks, so we didn't mind having just the basic coffee and tea in the room. For us, the quiet, the views, the energy and location were perfect! If you stay at Captain's Inn, you can walk to the coffee shop, visit the shops in town, eat at the fantastic marina fresh seafood restaurants, and walk to the two touring places that take you to see the otters on kayak. We used Kayak Connect with was great, very easy and great guides. This is the closest and best place to stay to see the otters.

I was trying to be very specific with where we stayed as we wanted a great view of the ocean within walking distance of the shops and beach, all without spending an arm and a leg. Check-in was rocky. Their system was declining all of our cards even though we tried four different ones from different banks. Luckily, we had enough cash on hand to pay the balance. The outside of the building was pretty worn down and dirty and the parking spots were SUPER tight. However, Room 6 was absolutely adorable and clean and they had the rollaway bed we ordered ready to go inside the closet. The view was exactly what we were hoping for and we had easy access to the communal terrace! The fireplace on the terrace came in handy since it was chilly and they had latches placed just right on the sliding doors so you could leave it open to fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean, but still be secure and safe. Definitely willing to come back for another trip and would love to check out the top floor!

For our room (rm 8) specifically, we couldn't get the TV to work and the plug on the outlet to the lamp was always loose. Thusly, the lamp may or may not work depending on whether I'm paying attention to the plug being on the outlet. Due to our length of stay, we expected housekeeping to come through at some point to collect our trash and dirty towels. However, that was not the case. We had to walk down to the office to request for towels and bring them back to our room. Our trash was also overflowing due to the fact that nobody came by to take it out. There are no outlets near the bed (not a deal breaker but an inconvenience) and shampoo, conditioner and shower gel is provided in those push bottles attached to the shower wall. The building is located near a highway and is easily assessable from the back and front. Some concerns about privacy and security but we had no issues during our stay there. If you just want a place to stay with some basic amenities, this would be the place to be; otherwise, look elsewhere.
