I waited a long time to write my review of Dr. Balani because sometimes you don't really know how the care was until time has gone by. In short, he is great. Last summer, I was suffering intense pain due to an abscess, My regular dentist was away that week so I ended up having to drive an hour and a half to Woburn on a Saturday to see Dr. Balani but it was worth it. Number one I am so appreciative of his emergency hours. When you need emergency dental care, you NEED it. He and his staff were very kind and understanding and I walked out of the office feeling a million times better. I found him entertaining and very willing to explain the procedures. Followup was great and the fees (though who likes paying dental fees?) were in line with what other dentists charge. His office was super helpful in billing insurance. At my regular followup visit, Dr. Balani did an extra scan on me (at no charge) because I was experiencing some residual discomfort. Right as I was about to leave, he called me back in to look at the scan and noted that there was a possible tiny abscess forming in the tooth next to the one he had worked on. I forgot to mention this to my regular dentist and here we are 9 months later and indeed I have infection under that other tooth. This seems to have been the cause of occasional discomfort on that side of my mouth. So anyway, shout out to Dr. Balani. I wish I had paid more attention to his advice. But mostly I am SUPER GRATEFUL to the way he and his staff took me in quickly and got me out of my pain. Thank you! read more

I find Dr. Deepak Balani to be the cream of the crop as far knowing his craft. One would hope any dentist treating patients is competent, and I think most are, but he has always struck me as being the best of the best. I believe he's spent so much time perfecting areas outside of general dentistry (such as endontics, even though he's not an endontics) that he able to have a better graps at things that other general dentist might miss or be less proficient in. Full transparency : He is pretty costly. I do not think he's overpriced for the skill that he brings to the table, but because he doesn't accept most insurance (though his office will work with you to try and maximize any out of network benefits you have) it is not going to be feasible for everyone to use him for their everyday dentist. Candidly, I do not always have the means to go to him and will have to sometimes opt for someone network. BUT before doing anything major to my mouth, I got him for his opinion because that's how much I trust. (I am an attorney, I'm someone between skeptical and paranoid - it takes a lot to earn my trust). With all that said, I 100% recommend him. I believe he's worth the hefty price tag if you can reasonably afford it. If you cannot afford him as your general dentist (2x year, X-rays, treatment, ect) I would suggest you at least getting your cleaning with him. He does the cleanings himself, so he is able to spot any problems with your mouth, versus many other offices were the dentist come in and checks the mouth for a few minutes after the hygienist has done their thing. If you need a costly treatment, he is not going to be offended if you explain that you need someone in-network and he will have no problem helping you find someone. But so fair as dental preventive care, I personally find him more proactive than most dentist and I think it's worth having him as part of your dental health team. read more

I went to Athena Dental Group on July 18, 2025, for a routine cleaning. Before my appointment, I asked several times if my Delta Dental insurance would cover the visit. Staff assured me it would be reimbursed, but afterward I found out that only $248 of my $677 payment was covered. To be clear, in my benefits I see 100% coverage for out-of-network providers but not the maximum coverage amounts. The office did not submit a preauthorization, which Delta confirmed was the only way I could have known about coverage limits. On top of that, $677 for a cleaning is extremely expensive compared to the typical cost of this service. When I raised this issue, I was refunded $185 for x-rays that were not actually required at the time of the visit. Later, I also discovered a $45 charge for a fluoride treatment that was not covered at all because of a minimum age requirement. Instead of refunding this directly, the office asked me to sign a document waiving all claims and agreeing not to post reviews in exchange for the refund. The office manager also emailed me suggesting there might be a "language barrier" (I'm not a native speaker) if I disagreed with them and threatened to report me to the police if I pursued the matter further. She also stated that their staff had told me, "you will be paid based on how much your insurance will cover." That vague response provided no useful information about potential out-of-pocket costs, even though I had asked three times for clarity. On top of that, the office manager warned me about the "harassment" despite the fact that I only ever called their office twice -- once for my initial complaint, and once more to point out the additional $45 charge. This experience left me feeling misled, discriminated against, and intimidated. If I had been honestly told even the approximate out-of-pocket cost upfront (more than $400), I would have gone to an in-network provider, as I always do. I was shocked to be treated this way by a dental office, especially after asking in good faith about insurance coverage multiple times. I strongly caution other patients to demand written preauthorization and clear cost estimates before receiving treatment here. read more

I had to schedule a tooth extraction because of pain and infection and because another doctor didn't do a good job with my root canal. Dr. Balani helped me settle and addressed all my concerns and performed the extraction along with bone graft procedure to get an implant once healed in the future. I'm sure the implant process will be as smooth as my extraction. The office is great, the staff is amazing. Overall I would highly recommend Dr. Balani to anyone. read more

I currently live in Tennessee, but was recently in Boston on vacation visiting family when I started getting unbearable tooth pain. My flight was that night at 8pm and was trying to deal with the pain to take care of it when i got home but couldn't function with how bad my tooth was feeling. I found Athena Dental, who happened to be open on a Sunday and willing to take me in as an emergency. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. I had to wait a bit when I got there, the waiting room was pretty full, but it wasn't unreasonably long. Once they got me in they went over all my information and how much it would cost before moving forward. I was self pay and they were totally transparent with pricing. I told Dr. Deepak what was going on and he ended up pulling my tooth. That probably took only 2 minutes for him to actually pull it. He was amazing, patient and explained everything to me. Quick, easy, painless and thankfully my toothache went away after the tooth was pulled and my flight home was much better than it would have been with the pain. I needed my wisdom teeth taken out badly, they were causing a lot of problems and pain for 2 years. I asked to be put on Athena Dental Group's (Woburn) waitlist, they called me back the next day for an opening. Melissa at the reception is very helpful and everyone working there is very kind! Scam. Do not waste your money here. Will not take any insurance. Was told it would be 221 for X-rays, when seen by doctor X-rays were not even taken. Just told to come back and schedule another day. But I sure was charged 221 dollars. Never again. Red flag should have been the no insurance. Be aware what you are getting into. read more

My tooth has been in so much pain for 3 months. I saw 3 dentists begging them to take it out and they kept telling me its a brand new crown its normal to feel discomfort. But I had two crowns at the same time and the other healed just fine. I couldn't eat, or drink anything without pain. No Endodontist could get me in for a root canal for at least 4-6 weeks. I drove 2hrs to get to Athena Dental on a Saturday in alot of pain when every other dentist was closed. They saw me right away. They ran their tests and Told me the tooth was fractured underneath the crown that's why no one saw it. They pulled it that day. It was a clean pull and now I am no longer in pain read more

Hands down the best emergency dentist to ever exist!! My front top temporary set fell off, 6 teeth total. My own stupid dentist couldn't make the effort to recement on a Sunday. I called these guys 20 mins later I am in the chair and 30 mins after that out the door. The dentist , his helper and front admin were absolutely rockstars. I went to Athena for a tooth extraction. I have serious anxiety when going to the dentist I was told that they would administer nitros occide to relax me. I was they were very nice and accommodating however once the gas mask was on for some time I did not feel anything just more panic they increased the dosage and still nothing I kept telling them that I was panicking. He was very quick and efficient with the extraction he put a stitch due to dome what close the hole left from the extraction. i told everyone that the gas did not work at all the receptionist went back to talk to the doctor about it. She came out and I expected there would be no charge however I was charged 181.00 just for the gas. I was told by the dentist that he would provide me with pain medication and an antibiotic as I told him that I was very anxious about the pain. my bill was over 800.00 for exrays the gas and the extraction they do not take insurance you must pay upfront and your insurance company will send you a check mine was expected to send about half of the 800.00. once I got home and had a conversation with a physician relative I was told that anyone administering any type of anestesia should know that individuals with red hair and freckles (gingers) need extra dosages and more time for it to take affect. I was told that at first the dosage was low and after about 15 minutes the dentist turned up the dosag but did not wait he just went right I and did the procedure as I had a full blown panic attack. To add insult to injury when I got to the pharmacy the doctor sent over ibuprofen and no antibiotic there is a real chance of infection when you delay taking an antibiotic I called the office and was told that the doctor went home and I would have to wait until tomorrow for the antibiotic but to pick it up first thing in the morning except I need to work Al day tomorrow. I was then told that I will need to take time to go get it. not sure why the doctor couldn't call it in tonight now it is on me because he fid not do his job. I am in so much pain right now ibuprofen and Tylenol have not touched it. All this and I am down 800.00 read more

I am so impressed with the same day Emergency Dental Care available at Athena Dental Group! My mother had broken a tooth which was very painful and needed to be removed. Her regular dentist said that he would need to consult an oral surgeon to extract the tooth who would not be available for 2 weeks. Melissa of Athena Dental Group scheduled my mother for an appointment the same day we called which was on the Veterans Day holiday and Dr. Deepak Balani performed the extraction that very day and gave my mother a prescription for an antibiotic as an abscess had developed. My mother stopped having pain after the extraction and is healing very well without any complications. We are so grateful for the services that are available at this Emergency Dental Clinic! Excellent services, I got my root canal done and everyone from the front desk to the doctor everyone is experienced, skilled, hygienic and sweet. I normally never ever write a review but I feel after my experience here, I must. Friday night I started to feel pain from a tooth on my left side. I stayed up all night not being able to sleep, in tears from pain. I searched all night to find a dentist that would see me on short notice and on a Saturday at that. Not easy to find an emergency practice open considering we are in a pandemic. After searching for some time, I had finally found this place. They are open 7days a week! I thought what a blessing. I had called at about 3am and left a voicemail, hoping someone would get back. A few short hours later he called me back and was actually concerned about my pain! I knew he could feel my pain. He didn't even hesitate to ask me how far I was and how early I could make it (I explained I was up all night in pain). He had three other patients before me and that didn't stop him for caring about me and getting me in first! When I arrived, the front staff quickly helped me with any paper work and quickly sat me in the chair. Let me just say I am NOT an easy patient to deal with. I was so scared about feeling pain or something going wrong. He was so gentle and reassuring. It didn't bother him that I was scared. I mean who isn't scared getting a tooth pulled? He reassured me as many times as I needed that I would not feel a thing.. he was right! I didn't feel a thing! I was only in that office for no more than 10min and my tooth was pulled and I was ready to go! He did an amazing job! I have gotten a tooth pulled before and I was in pure agony!! Not this time! I went home after to sleep and woke up feeling like a new person! I've never healed so quickly before! Huge thank you!! read more

I went in to Athena for an emergency appointment because I lost a filling. Not only did they not help with my filling, but they double charged me (I paid with a card but I later found out that they also billed my insurance and didn't refund my original payment) and recommended I make an appointment for a cleaning first with nitrous oxide because of my anxiety around dental procedures. Although it seemed unconventional that he decided to put off my filling, I agreed. When I went in for my cleaning, I waited for 45 minutes, they did NOT have nitrous oxide and decided that I would be a great patient to train their new hygienist on. Dr. Balani didn't walk through anything that he was doing and when I expressed concern he was immediately condescending and asked "have you ever even gotten a cleaning?". It was like they didn't take a single meaningful note from my first visit. It was a complete waste of time. I'm very disappointed and STILL have a missing filling in my mouth and will need to get it repaired elsewhere. read more
