Consulted Dr Dragoo multiple times for some sporting injuries of my own causing. Sometimes in more of a rush than others, but as long as you have questions (I'm a firm believer in the patient doing active research into one's diagnosis and treatment), Dr Dragoo spends the time to address your concerns. Courteous, good bedside manners, empathetic, and most importantly, experienced. I've also found Dr Dragoo's medical assistant, Andrea, to be kind and very helpful as well. It's a bit unnerving to have one, two, sometimes as many as four fellows/residents/visiting doctors in the examining room at the same time, but they've never been anything but quiet and professional. Although all four sports medicine orthopedists (Dragoo, Safran, McAdams, Fanton) can treat all your joint ailments, they do sub-specialize a bit (i.e. Dragoo for knees, Safran for hips, McAdams and Fanton for shoulders and elbows). Dr Dragoo is a top-notch knee guy, and the only diagnostician amongst ~10 local orthopedists to really recognize the root of what was causing my symptoms. Be aware appointment slots are limited, as Dr Dragoo only holds clinic two days a week, so schedule a visit ASAP (you can always re-schedule or cancel if need be). Dr Dragoo currently has clinic on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, operating on Mondays and Thursdays. She has performed 2 surgeries on my right hand and both times post surgery I have had an incredible amount of pain. She refuses to alter my pain medicine cause she says there is no stronger medication. Just be aware that she is very uncompassionate and very brute! After an ACL tear injury playing badminton, I was not sure if I wanted to go through with the acl repair surgery considering my age (45+), and lifestyle (not very active). The initial meeting with Dr. Dragoo convinced me that acl-repair was the only option for me to get back to the sport I enjoyed. I liked that the doctor had a firm opinion on the best course-of-action for me, unlike another doctor who I consulted earlier, and who left some of the decisions to me. Dr. Dragoo performed the ACL repair surgery with an allo-graft in Dec 2016, and after a regimen of PT, I was back playing in about a year (late 2017). This is a very long over due YELP review of Dr. Jason Dragoo at Stanford Sports Medicine Dept in Redwood City. He has been helping me with bilateral knee pain for years and did a clean up arthroscopic surgery for me years ago. I saw Dr. Dragoo today as it appears that both my knees have deteriorated to the point I need total knee replacements on both knees. I saw Dr. Dragoo to get his take on that decision and after careful review of recent scans, x-rays and discussion of my current high level of pain, he concurred its time to get new knees. Not only did he process the referral but offered to remain my "quarterback" on stand by if something came up that I needed an question answered and couldn't reach my surgeon. He and his long time assistant J.R. are a click away on their email system through Stanford.. Dr. Dragoo is that very rare mix of a very skilled surgeon who is up in latest techniques and does clinical trials on new treatment options but also a generally a very nice man whom I trust 100 percent in this very big decision. I did a bunch of research online about the surgery and talked to a bunch of people about doctors. One of my friends had recently had knee surgery and he recommended Dr. Dragoo. I then asked around a couple of doctor friends about Dr. Dragoo and they all told me that he was top top notch. A month after my surgery I could not be happier. The Stanford medical system was phenomenal: very efficient, little wait, friendly staff, and the best facilities. From the moment I met with Dr. Dragoo I felt very comfortable. He explained to me my situation, told me all my options and even discussed those that I could pursue with another doctor. Throughout the entire process I was told what I should expect. Dr. Dragoo is an excellent surgeon and a great person all around. He took a lot of time with me during every appt. He explained everything in detail and patiently answered all of my questions. He cares more about his patients than about money and has your back when it comes to insurance companies. My knee surgery went extremely well and I have had very little pain. I'd bet that I won't even see the tiny scars in a few months. I would go back to Dr. Dragoo in a heartbeat. Let's be clear, having to wait for a short time while he's attending to other patients' needs is not a big deal at all! I would rather know that my doctor is taking excellent care of all of his or her patients than to cut people off when they have questions just so he or she is not 5 minutes late to the next appt. They have the screen w/ updated waiting times for every doctor. If you're worried, bring a good book and learn how to be patient. That being said, I've never waited more than 20 minutes over my appt. time. But, as Kenneth M. pointed out, I'd rather wait for the best! read more

I am from the central valley and had dislocated my knee when I was 13. I had a reconstructive surgery done and it lasted about three years before I had to have another, being MPFL using a graft. It lasted a few years and I started having my knee dislocate and be very unstable, and excruciatingly painful. I could barely walk and I am only 20 years old. My first two surgeries were done by a local doctor and I decided to go to another in the are for a second opinion, where I was then referred to Stanford, and Dr. Dragoo. I went for my initial consult and Dr. Dragoo had already thoroughly reviewed my medical history before even seeing me. He consulted me along with his assistant Dr. Tauman who were both so humble, explanatory, and empathetic to my situation. They agreed I needed another MPFL and worked to get me in a week from my consultation date, because they said I had been through enough pain and suffering at such a young age. Today, 10/2/2014, I am exactly two weeks post surgery and have no pain and am actually starting to feel like my knee is normal. Dragoo was so wonderful, he even gave me his cell phone number to call him if I had any questions or concerns, and told me not to hesitate to call. The doctors, and rest of the staff at Stanford from the medical assistants, to the surgery schedulers, and nurses and other team members I encountered, never once acted like "Im a big wig with stanford" and it was all a first name basis, super friendly, and you could tell they truly loved their jobs and were there to take care of you. By far, I would recommend this facility and doctor to anyone. Just when you think all hope is lost, they are there to assure you that they are there to help you in whatever way possible, and I have never felt more comfortable with a medical facility in my entire life. read more

Excellent physician! Was looking online for one of the best doctors in the country for my condition and luckily found Dr. Dragoo in California. I agree with the last post Erika that said he took lots of time with patients. He took lots of time with me and when it came time to decision-making he involved you in the process and you could tell your best interest was the guiding factor. There was one time I saw him and I had to wait 30 min to see him but it was great because a surgeon that takes his time on patients is a surgeon worth having a surgery with. You will also notice doesn't waste time but gets right into your condition. When I first saw him walking in the hall(I left to go to the bathroom) he said hi. He was so kind I kind of mumbled a hi but rushed back to the room to go see Dr. Dragoo. Little did I know that was him! For an accomplished surgeon he is very kind and has an excellent bedside manner. Definitely a model provider and a good mentor for medical students! He's one of the best physicians in California. I've seen about a dozen surgeons for the same condition and he was right on it and has helped me greatly recover. He's not a miracle worker but he will do his best and has a talent for surgery. read more

NYC-5 mile run this morning in Central Park with no walking intervals - knee is FIXED, no surgery, 8 weeks of PT! That's huge. I was unable to run for 9 months because of an injury, thought I needed some knee surgery. Stanford Medical Dr. Dragoo suggested 8 weeks of physical therapy and anti-inflammatory meds, pointed me towards Breakthrough Physical Therapy near my work in Sunnyvale. I've never done PT before - what a weird science, but amazing. Home exercises to build strength in muscles I didn't know were there. Massaging out scar tissue. It worked for me. I would have given ZERO star to Dr. Dragoo, which is (a) not possible (b) primarily because I did not see him. I wanted to visit him for a second opinion on MRIs i had on two knees, where both had meniscus tears. Dr. Dragoo agreed to see me for EACH KNEE AT A TIME !!! I will make the story short -- Dr. Dragoo is probably a good doctor, but his financial interest prevailed my own health and serviceability interest. No excuses/explanation could make up his approach to try double dipping me as a prospective patient. This was disappointing. I skipped his services, visited one of the other best professor experts in the region, and got a great service and highest level of diagnosis. I have been a patient with bad knee for a long time (around a decade). I had doctors who cut the knee open multiple times. But all unsuccessful attempts (over 6) - lost count of my surgeries. I just had my left and right meniscus repaired and a stem cell transplant performed by Dr. Dragoo last Thursday. His preliminary consultations before the surgery were lengthy and detailed reviewing with me both the Ex-rays and MRI's. First examined by a resident and then secondly by Dr. Dragoo himself the consult lasted a total time of at least an hour as he explained and pointed out my problem areas and how he would repair them. The day of surgery went as planned with every member of the team performing to the highest standard of medical care. The anaesthesiologist, Anna, went into lengthy detail covering every drug she would be using along with potential drug side effects. I highly recommend Dr. Dragoo and his surgical team for knee repair. read more

If no stars were allowed, I would give him none. Dr. Jason L. Dragoo is the worst "doctor/surgeon" I have ever been exposed to in my life. He is an arrogant jerk, to put it nicely, who could care less about his patients. He was never on time to an appointment; I never waited less than an hour for him, up to four and a quarter, without ever once receiving an apology even when I had the first appointment of the day. My knee surgery was "not successful" and as a result at 18 years old I could never run again, among other inconveniences as he worded them. And when I asked him what I should do from here, he shrugged and said come back to him to get a cortisone shot, in my knee, every month for the rest of my life. I had to go to a different surgeon to get undo what he did to my knee. To say I dislike him is an understatement. Please, don't waste your time with this man, I was better off before the surgery. read more

I'm really surprised by the great reviews as I had a horrible experience. First he was running late and I was supposed to know that by looking at the monitor in the waiting room as the receptionist told me to do so. However the monitor did not indicate that he was running late. I was taken to the room by his idiot assistant that took my X-rays and was suppose to return to the room, but she didn't. In fact no one did for over two hours. Due to another commitment I had to leave without seeing the doctor. Then I had to wait another month to see him. Again, I had to deal with the idiot assistant. Dr Dragoo apologized for the previous appointment as the idiot assistant mixed up the order patients were supposed to be seen. He ordered X-rays and pt, which I had already done, and the problem was not resolved. read more

I have known Dr. Dragoo for more than 6 years. He did my first knee surgery in which I had a tear. Usually the meniscus is removed however the thinking in medicine has changed to leave the meniscus because it is part of the natural knee. In my case he was able to save the meniscus. Dr. Dragoo is a very caring individual. My employer caused a lot of problems unnecessarily. Dr. Dragoo went to bat for me so to speak. I am very surprised at the negative comments. I would disagree with alot of the negative comments. There are some people who just do not understand medicine. I could not imagine a better doctor than Dr. Dragoo. In my case he tried to do everything and then some to save my natural knee unfortunately the structure in my knee has caused a lot of wear and I will need to have another surgery. He sent me for a second opinion about doing a partial replacement. The result was that I would another surgery. Dr. Dragoo has never given up on me and given the amount of problems my employer caused this is amazing. He is a very talented surgeon, and has been very involved with my medical care. I will be headed for my second surgery in January for a partial replacement. Dr. Dragoo continues to follow me for my orthopedic issues. I am very lucky to have him. lak read more

Unfortunately the process to get to see Dr Dragoo is totally unreasonable. I tried numerous times, every time I called and got transferred to "new patient" extension, I waited for almost an hour on the phone. I made sure that I called during the start of a tv program. Clearly very annoying. Of course they always apologized. The line encourages you to leave a message; however, I never got a call back from leaving a message. Once getting through, it is never a case of making an appointment, one time I left old xrays... subsequent call back from them did not leave a message, so I had to call again (the close to an hour waste of time) only to learn that he needed additional information. So I provided a full body MRI scan, again a phone call where I needed to call back (the next waste of an hour) to find out he needed more information. He wanted a new MRI of my knee which he wouldn't prescribe. I went to my Stanford physician, who insisted on a new xray of my knee. When it came back he assured me this xray would be adequate for Dr Dragoo... you guess it, not a chance (again a phone msg and another hour waste of time). Dr Dragoo still insisted on the MRI. I told them fine but they needed either needed to prescribe it or send my Stanford doctor a note requesting that he prescribe it. Didn't happen, so another call and another waste of an hour.... I finally had my Stanford doctor send Dr Dragoo an email on the Stanford teaching network... Dr Dragoo then responded to him that I needed surgery and he didn't do surgery. I wanted his opinion on my knee regarding other protocols that might be appropriate for my knee. I believe he just wanted to get rid of me, why all the hassle for an MRI, if he could reject everything else out of hand. My Stanford GP apologized to me. So what do I think about Stanford orthopedics? Draw your own conclusion. read more

Dr. Dragoo performed my ACL reconstruction surgery 8 months ago. My surgery went great, and he was always very thorough and very reassuring throughout this entire process. I am having to have a 2nd surgery due to scar tissue, and once again, feel confident that Dr. Dragoo knows this is the best choice. Out of 6-7 appts, I have only had to wait a long time for him once. The assistants are top notch and always get back to you with any info you need in a very timely manner. I received my ACL surgery from Dr. Dragoo in 2009. I remember the moment I fell asleep before the surgery. Dr. Dragoo asked how I was feeling. I said, "okay". I asked back, "How are you feeling?" He said with confidence, "I feel like a million bucks!" I'll never forget those words. As I woke up 2 hours later, the pain was mild. 4 out of 10 or less. If anything, I felt worse taking the vicodin which I stopped after that first dose from the hospital. For the next year, I rehabilitated my knee through PT for first month or two and then decided to do it on my own. Since then, I've played basketball without issues. Although, I still wear a regular brace in case of high impact injuries. Hikes, walks, and running, I don't need the brace. I truly believe the success of my surgery and recovery was due to Dr. Dragoo's excellent skills and great team. BTW, his appointments tend to run 1-2 hours late because of all his patients. If you can, book an early appointment so that you can see him without waiting long. read more

As the 20 year "warranty" seemed to expire on the surgical treatment of an injury that I suffered in college, I went to see Dr. Dragoo (thanks to a referral from a friend/co-worker), having essentially resigned myself to a tune-up, if I had any hope of remaining active with my kids and/or playing basketball without pain. His diagnosis of my condition was thorough, if not a bit complicated, and the unfortunate reality was that a complete repair would require 2 procedures and several months of recovery time. He took no offense when I sought out a 2nd opinion (from the head of Orthopaedic Surgery at Kaiser - SF, who is a friend of my brother), which ultimately validated Dr. Dragoo's conclusions. I was even more comforted to learn that he was not just "desperate to pull out his scalpel" and when he suggested that I might want to at least try using a specifically-designed brace instead, to address the dis-alignment and instability that had developed in my knee, I jumped at the hope of avoiding the surgery-recovery cycle. Almost 3 years later, I am still very active, and have only experienced mild pain a few times while playing basketball with that brace. I'm highly confident that he would have been the best surgeon to perform those procedures, had I elected the direct repairs, but greatly appreciate his self-confidence and integrity in considering the downside implications and other alternatives. If/when my knee's clock eventually runs out, I'm definitely calling Dr. Dragoo again! read more

After experiencing 3 yrs of pain and 1 grossly irresponsible surgeon, I was referred to Dr. Dragoo at Stanford. He and his resident were amazing during the diagnosis process. As a result of Dr. Dragoo's diagnostic diligence and bedside manner, we determined that I needed to see an oncologist for my knee problem. He referred me to Dr. Avidien who performed my surgery. I am grateful for Dr. Dragoo's in depth analysis. Dr. Dragoo and Dr. Avidien have a rare combination as surgeons to also have a terrific and patient bed side manner. Some say that bed side manner doesn't matter. I actually used to say that. Until my so-called expert doctor with no bed side manner also had no interest in doing what was best for my situation. My issue wasn't an earth shattering exciting surgical procedure, however this surgery can very well change my life back to an active life rather than a dreadful outlook when cooking dinner causes unbearable pain. These two doctors get that...and I will be eternally grateful for that. read more
