    Passing through the area and spotted the historical marker sign so detoured to check it out. This…read moreair field is not far from US-80 just west of Mineola. The marker is in good condition and reads, "Wisener Field. The age of aviation came to Mineola on July 4, 1917, when a Curtis JN-4D "Jenny" biplane, piloted by a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, landed at this field. Called Massengale Meadow at the time, the site's flat terrain proved conductive to the establishment of one of the first airports in Texas. It was used by military aircraft during World War I and was the home of the Royal Flying Circus and other barnstormers in the 1920s. Expanded and improved over the years, it remains a privately-maintained public use airport. (1988)." The wikipedia article says that a number of well-known aviators have flown into Wisener Field. These have included Wiley Post, "Slats" Rogers, Tommy Grace and Fay Lucille Cox. United States Senators Lyndon B. Johnson (later U.S. President), Phil Graham, and Kay Bailey Hutchison have flown into the airport. As it happened, there was a man here who seemed to be thinking about a takeoff and I I watched him go down the runway only to cancel and taxi back to the top. If you can get by on holidays such as the 4th of July or memorial day, or contact the owners, they open the flight museum where you can see a Curtis Jenny and other interesting planes and old cars.
