Been an Athens customer for 10+ years and everything is great. Customer service picks up and are also available using e-mail or chat. They pretty much come at the same time every week. We unfortunately HAVE to lose Athens and the new contract for the city was picked up by Universal Waste Systems. They already suck. For years I have complained about Athens Services, but I am writing a 5 star review for them now largely because of the incredible attitude and service of our local driver in northeast Monrovia, Jesse. Not only is Jesse friendly and always ready with a big smile and a wave, but he goes out of his way to help make sure my neighbors and I have a good experience with Athens. I've seen him hop out and pick up a trash can that our local bear knocked over instead of just driving past it as other drivers have done in the past, he acknowledges my kids and salutes them whenever he sees them, and he's even managed to win over my wife who hasn't had anything nice to say about our trash service for years, but just last week came upstairs telling me how much she likes our local driver as he saw her struggling to make it down to the street with our can in time, and not only waited for her, but even gave her a hand! I saw Jesse today and like always he had a big smile on his face and was waiving, so I decided to ask him his name so I knew who to credit when writing this review. read more

I like Athens Services in Redondo Beach, and believe the Torrance location services the area in the South Bay, from the weekly street sweeping / cleaning to the weekly trash pick up and recycling. The only downside I can say is that the "timing" of the services can be a bit offsetting for those who sleep in or commute to work in the morning. Typically, for garbage, you'll hear the trucks and their warning beeping alerts and machenary cranking, lifting bins and dumping trash at what seems to be as early as 7am and up to/through 8am, 9am, and before 10am. It's quite loud, but the nature of their business. It's especially loud around the businesses and apartment buildings where there's larger dumpsters involved in unloading the waste. When you drive down some of Redondo Beach's one-way streets and the trucks are ahead, often times it's hard if not impossible to pass the trucks by, so can be a road block that causes delays in the morning commute just to get on the way. So, I'd recommend, if I could, that the services should start at 10am and end around 3pm as the sweet spot when most of the streets are empty and most of the residents are out at work. I think that would be helpful to the residents as well as drivers. Aside from that, pet peeve, I'd say the service level is great. In Redondo Beach, the trash fees are rolled into the City Property Taxes, I believe, so there's no monthly fees for disposal / waste management services. The workers are friendly and helpful, great attitudes as well. The street cleaning is good, and they often go the extra mile in their efforts to clean the street side curbs, even when there's oil residue and bigger messes than what a little water and automatic brooms on a truck can do as the sweepers drive by. The 2 hr window for street sweeping is typically mid-day, which is nice, and is perfect timing. If you don't move your car, typically the local police follows (or trail blazes in front of the cleaning truck as the path breaker) the service and issues tickets for those who have not moved their cars. I think the ticket is in the price range of about $70 now for those who are neglectful and violate the law. read more

Monrovia residents should call Athens Waste Management Services. They are dumping all three; Recycling, Composting, Regular Trash all in ONE truck. -And charging an extra $10.70 for what is called an Organic Recycling Program. We are paying for are three services. What really gets me, I have always been so careful to wash all of my cans and glass bottles. Everything in my recycling was clean. -And for months they have just been dumping them in with all the nasty trash! That's rotten! When I called, Athens said they couldn't do anything about the Organic Recycling Program, that's Monrovia. But I couldn't get a different number to call about that. Absolutely awful mess. Nobody cares, nobody is interested after making numerous phone calls. It's just a stupid bear can and nobody knows what they are doing. "Oh it will be there today"...wait for 2 weeks. Call again "oh, they couldn't get up the street and it will be there tomorrow", which is total BS. Week later, nobody answers for days. This is a business and nobody is answering the phone? Few days later, "Oh, it's coming today". OK, I talked to a 'supervisor' again. They take the old garbage can that day, then no replacement. Nothing. So we don't have a garbage can for a couple of weeks. What? Call again, "oh, it's on the way", do you realize we don't even have a garbage can? "oh I see here we removed it, the new one will be there today". Nothing. It's just a stupid bear can. Finally got it but it took 3 months? In the meantime I cleaned up the garbage from the street (bear knocked it over) numerous times during this period. Oh and guess what? They billed me for the can the whole time, from the first phone call. Billed extra costs for 3 months while I did all of the work to just get it here. It's just a stupid bear can, but we needed it. For starters, I am a 5'3" 59 y.o. woman who puts out her own trash cans every week but somehow a fully grown adult man who is at least 25 years younger than me couldn't muster up the strength to empty my cans and left me with a pile of garbage. This company is too expensive in my book for what they do and the service we as consumers receive. When the 3 bins were picked up, the lid (cover) of the green bin was taken as well. I called immediately for replacement and was promised to wait for 2 weeks. To-date, it has been 4 weeks that I have been waiting despite the consistent follow-ups. It's been raining every week, so the bin needed to be covered. ATHENS HAS BEEN HANDLING TRASH FOR CERRITOS FOR A FEW MONTHS. THE WORST SERVICE!!! CalMet handled trash services in Cerritos for years. The service was great, if you ran out of space and left an extra bag or cardboard box, they would take care of it. NOT Athens. If you leave a folded cardboard box out, they leave it, you have to schedule bulky item removal (REALLY? FOR A CARDBOARD TV BOX?). And to follow that, they've told me for 3 weeks straight that they would replace my bin which is falling apart. Still there... We'll see how many times I have to call. read more

Athens just took over service to our area. Athens driver likes to stop and get out of his running truck to move our package delivery box so it blocks our mailbox. I have reported this twice. No corrective action has been taken Our previous Waste Management driver did not feel it necessary to block access to our mailbox.
